The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

At one time, mineral aggregates were considered physically and chemically inert substances whose junction was that of an inex-pensive, easily obtainable source of bulk. This philosophy applied regardless of the use to which the aggregate was put. Research approaches dealing only with such gross physical properties as hardness, toughness, impact resistance, etc., dominated the early growth years of the industry and influenced specifications to a large extent. The accelerated pace of highway construction, which began toward the end of the depression years, focused attention on the need for extensive aggregate research. The realization in the early 1940's that aggregates interacted chemically as well as physically with their environment provided the stimulus necessary to translate the drab, systematic aggregate technology of the early 20th century into the changing, dynamic, challenging field it is today. Current research problems are discussed in detail. These efforts being pursued by contract research organizations, universities, governmental agencies, and industry transcend many fields. The mineral aggregate industry is the world's largest mining and processing endeavor, yet it is graced with little of the romance or public awareness that accompanies mention of gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, or aluminum mining efforts. Much of this reaction is undoubtedly due to the fact that the uses to which crushed stone and sand and gravel are normally put are not fully recognized or appreciated by the general public. Almost 2 billion tons of mineral aggregates are quarried or mined, processed, and sold yearly in the United States alone.= The largest uses to which this vast tonnage is subjected are as ingredients of portland-cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and dense-graded aggregate-base course mixtures in the highway and building construction fields, two industries closely related to the expenditure of public funds. It is for these uses, partially in justification for the expenditures of vast sums of public funds, that mineral aggregate research truly finds its emphasis. The research efforts expended relative to the highway and building construction uses to which mineral aggregates are subjected are those of primary concern to the industry. These efforts, while of direct consequence to the industry due to the volume market represented, are of interest as well to public agencies, universities, and contract research firms. All actively conduct research, exchange information, and make contributions to the overall knowledge relative to aggregate usage and limitations. The research efforts of the mineral aggregate industry is the subject to be discussed throughout this paper. It covers all aspects of highway and building design, construction, and technology. The effects of research pertaining to quarrying and mining methods, blasting and processing techniques, storage and handling facilities, and equipment employment and development have left their mark on the crushed stone and sand and gravel industries. Such specialized efforts have resulted in dramatically increased production rates which in turn have served to keep costs, and hence prices, down. Despite the many inflationary pressures over the years, the cost of a ton of aggregate today is little more than it was 25 or 30 years ago. Mention is made of these efforts simply to emphasize the diversity of research in the mineral aggregate field. The remainder of this paper focuses on the complexity of what might be termed "product knowledge" research.

BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla sinter machine underwent a major upgrade during mid-2009. The mixing and rolling drum (MRD) was thoroughly cleaned during the upgrade. Space factor measurements taken in October 2009 showed that the drum was operating in the cataract regime in the dry mixing section and the cascading regime in the rolling section, which is optimal for granulation. Sampling carried out during an entry into the MRD showed that both the Sauter mean diameter and the predicted bed voidage increase rapidly during wetting, and then decrease in the wet mixing section. In the rolling section, the granule properties remained constant untilthe drum discharge. Frozen particle analysis, using liquid nitrogen as the quenching agent, were carried out on material collected from the MRD discharge. The results, expressed as a Granulation Index, showed there had been a significant improvement in the granulating performance of the MRD following the upgrade. The plant studies were also complemented with laboratory scale experiments which aimed to optimise the granulation process. The effect of burnt lime on green feed permeability was quantifi ed using the laboratory scale drum at different moisture contents. A significant increase in permeability was apparent once the burnt lime dosing rates doubled from 1.1 - 2.2 per cent w/w (feed basis). The capacity of the burnt lime system at the sinter machine will be increased in order to benefi t from the expected higher permeability, permeability, which will enable the machine to sinter at deeper bed heights.

The proposed Caldecott fourth bore will consist of a two lane highway tunnel along California State Route 24 near the City of Oakland. The proposed design and construction sequence for the 15-m-diameter tunnel are based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The initial support system incorporates combinations of shotcrete, rock dowels, lattice girders, spiles, and grouted steel pipe canopies. The final lining is cast-in-place reinforced concrete. A waterproofing membrane and drainage system are placed between the initial and final linings. State Route 24 is a lifeline route, required to be open to emergency vehicles within 72 hours after a major earthquake, defined as having a return period of 1,500 years and a peak ground acceleration of 1.2 g. Although the seismic design criteria are stringent, the design of the tunnel lining system is ultimately controlled by static ground loads in the weak rock along the alignment.

OBJECTIVES OF RADIATION MONITORING Monitoring is a tool used in the practice of radiation protection. The primary reasons for monitoring are to reduce radiation exposures to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable and to assure that no individual receives a dose exceeding the maximum individual dose limit. The documentation of radiation doses for legal, medical, or epidemiological reasons is a subordinate function of any monitoring program. The investment in radiation monitoring programs should be guided by four criteria: (1) the detection and avoidance of unnecessary exposures, (2) the magnitude of potential health risks, (3) the determination of combined doses and risks with adequate confidence, and (4) the verification of compliance with established limits. FIRST CRITERION: DOSE REDUCTION - DETECT AND CORRECT UNNECESSARY EXPOSURES The system of dose limitation advocated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977), and subscribed to in a broad sense by various regulatory agencies, is comprised of three essential ingredients: (1) [justification] of any practice that produces radiation doses by some commensurate net benefit, (2) [optimization] of radiation control measures by reducing doses to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable, and (3) [limitation] of individual doses to preclude inequities and [moldistribution] of risks. All too often, only the third criterion - the limitation of individual doses to prescribed regulatory limits - is explicitly addressed in everyday radiation protection programs. The emphasis of most exposure control and monitoring efforts appears to be directed toward limiting and documenting individual doses that might approach the legal limit. The first two criteria, i.e. justification and optimization, should contribute to a rationale for allocating monitoring efforts. When applied to individuals, these criteria mean the detection and elimination of unnecessary exposures. This should be a high priority of any monitoring program. Measurements should be directed toward detecting inoperative or ineffective control measures, whether or not there is a risk of exceeding the individual dose limits. The ICRP recommends a procedure that can be used effectively to reduce unnecessary exposures. A n investigation level should be established at an exposure rate substantially lower than the regulatory limit, e.g. 30% of the limit (ICRP 26, 1977, p.33). Measurements obtained during routine monitoring that exceed the investigation level are evaluated with respect to cause and potential reduction. To be effective, the evaluation results should be formally recorded and conveyed both to management and to the workers involved. Although the investigation level recommended by the ICRP is based on a fixed exposure rate or derived air concentration, an equally effective evaluation program may be based on the investigation of a percentage of all measurements. For example, one might investigate the highest 5% or a random selection of all measurements. In any case, the objective is to detect and correct situations that are producing unnecessary exposures. SECOND CRITERION: MONITOR IN PROPORTION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF RISK The ICRP criteria apply generally to all radiation exposures. However, a second priority for monitoring programs should be established on the basis of the nature of the exposures and the magnitude of the health risks involved. Current practices in radiation protection are based on dose limits to specific organs and assessment of individual exposure pathways, with little consideration of the combined doses from various pathways. Although the intent of the ICRP recommendations was to limit the total dose to each critical organ, combined doses from external and internal sources are rarely determined. The recent recommendations of the ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) are based on the limitation of total health risk from occupational radiation exposures. Implementation of this concept would necessarily require the measurement, calculation and summation of doses and concomitant risks to all organs of the body from all exposure pathways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward translating the ICRP recommendations into regulations. The proposed recommendations for Federal Radiation Protection Guidance for Occupational Exposures (USEPA, 1981) include provisions for summing the risk-weighted organ doses to determine compliance with an effective whole-body dose equivalent limit. Whether or not the proposed guidance is modified before final adoption, it seems clear that some version of dose summation and combined risk limitation will be included in future regulations. The York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) Interceptor Tunnel Project is located in the Town of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, just north of Toronto. Construction commenced in September 2006 and completion is planned for early summer, 2008. The project involved public and agency buy-in of construction technologies and methods that minimized dewatering, design and construction of sealed shafts with jet grout break-in and out blocks in order that Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) mode could be maintained by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during shaft entry and exit. This paper will discuss the advances that were made possible through the opportunity to apply and test these technologies in order to accommodate the aquifer and artesian conditions present on this project.

The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Roof Control Division (RCD) evaluated the use of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data to identify fracture traces on Earth’s surface. Results were compared to the analysis method employed by RCD for 30 years, which relies on LANDSAT-TM Band 4. SRTM elevation models are expected to provide a direct representation of bedrock surface, while LANDSAT-TM Band 4 represents reflected near-infrared radiation as an indication of moisture content and is only a proxy for possible structures. Three areas in southwestern Pennsylvania were chosen for ground-truthing lineaments derived from both methods, following a series of desktop comparisons in six areas of the contiguous U.S. Field studies that identified numerous instances in which SRTM lineaments corresponded with joints at the projected location, and were oriented within 10° of joint strike, indicating that those SRTM lineaments represented the structural grain of the area. In some cases, lineaments were associated with individual joint zones. Photo-lineaments derived from the existing LANDSAT-TM methodology appear to offer a higher coincidence with expected trends of joints on a regional scale when performing the desktop comparisons, while field observations indicated that SRTM-derived lineaments had a higher association with individual geologic structures in the case study field area. It appears that both methods can identify the structural grain of an area, and that both tend to identify linear segments of valleys where erosion has preferentially occurred along joint zones or other structures.

Tailings dam failures have been occurring in recent years. They are considered more vulnerable than hydraulic dams due to the lack of regulations on specific design criteria, and stability requirements regarding monitoring during the construction and maintenance process. Thus, monitoring the dam is essential to know the dam's existing state and ensure its safety. One of the reasons tailings storage facilities fail is slope instability caused by moisture content. A relationship does exist between moisture content and surface strength, early detection of seepage would help to assess the physical condition of the dam. Moreover, to cover the tailings dam area in an efficient way Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are suitable because of their versatility and high-resolution data acquisition. Mounted with a high-resolution RGB camera, and thermal, or hyperspectral sensors UAVs can acquire good quality images that combined with image analysis and machine learning algorithms yield a good estimate of soil moisture.

The subject of optimal planning of level and raise spacing for inclined narrow reef deposits has received intermittent attention over the years because the subject matter is inherently complex. Previous work has approached the problem as simply that of simultaneously minimizing the total excavation and haulage cost associated with the development workings. However, when level and raise spacing are altered, other factors such as productivity are negatively affected, thus requiring a delicate trade-off of contradicting planning or optimization criteria. The paper concludes that the problem is actually of the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type, contrary to traditional thinking that the planning problem is achieved solely by minimizing waste development.

The physiocemical properties and industrial uses of the clay mineral montmorillonite are reviewed. Montmorillonite is the most abundant species of the smectite clay mineral group and is the predominant mineral composing bentonite deposits. The crystal structure, chemical composition, exchangeable ion type, and small crystal size are responsible for several unique properties, including a large chemically active surface area, a high cation exchange capacity and interlamellar surfaces having unsual hydration characteristics. The type of exchangeable ion Na, Ca and/or Mg has a major influence on industrial and chemical uses of montmorillonite because of their hydration characteristcs. Natural occurrences of Na montmorillonite in commercial quantities are geographically limited, but Ca-Mg montmorillonite deposits are known world wide. Foundry, well drilling, pelletizing and civil engineering constitute the major uses of montmorillonite, but the total array of uses of montmorillonite exceeds that of any other mineral.

Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

Accidents underground are being avoided and mines made safer by means of revising and adding to their mining laws , by enforcing them through mine inspection departments , and by hearty co - operation with other agencies working miners ' safety . As the American petroleum industry surveyed its position in early 1937, it had many reasons to be optimistic concerning its future. The industry had emerged successfully from the depression, and for the first time since 1929 it had produced over one billion barrels of crude oil in a single year. The demand for gasoline and fuel oils was up, and reserves of crude petroleum and production capacity seemed adequate for the future. Although production of crude oil dropped slightly in 1938, the oil industry was still in a good position with respect to its supply of raw material, which improved economically in 1939 with the decrease of crude-oil stocks in storage above ground. However, by 1940 a threatening cloud (the invasion of France and its rapid surrender) had appeared on the horizon. This aroused Somme fears as to the industry's immediate future, and these fears were intensified the following year when the United States entered World War II. As the war progressed, more and more ships, planes, and vehicles were produced, and the problem of obtaining enough liquid fuels to supply them intensified. Hearings were held in August 1943 before a subcommittee of the Committee on Public Lands and Surveys of the 78th Congress to determine the advisability of passing legislation to promote the development of synthetic liquid fuels.

"INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the Phase relations of fluids produced from combination wells 4/ at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of production from natural reservoirs is essential to efficient recovery and refining practice. An accurate sample of the fluid from such wells may be prepared by mixing (in the proportions of the measured gas:liquid ratio) gas and liquid taken from the separator conditions of steady flow; and physical properties of the sample, at significant pressures and temperatures, may be determined with suitable laboratory apparatus for use in the solution of engineering problems. The results of study of sample so obtained and of mixtures of gas and liquid from the separator combined in other proportions are presented in this report. Attention was given in the study to the relationship between the physical properties of what may be regarded as the constituent materials - the gas and liquid taken from the separator - and the properties of mixtures of these constituents. Data obtained for the complete range of mixture Proportions are expected to provide a reference scale for the study of other combination-well fluids produced at different liquid:gas ratios."

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. A few years ago, the Ventilation Committee established the practice of resenting one topic each year for discussion at the annual meeting. The practice has met good response on the part of committee members and I suggest that it be continued. The topic chosen for this year, "Underground Anemometry," is a topic which has bothered me for more than 20 years. It seems to me that the coal industry is content to rely on slipshod methods for measuring the rate of flow of air underground, so I prefaced my discussional charge to committee members with the statement that I regard air measnrements made in the usual way, with hand held anemometer, as no good. Agreements and disagreements came in from more than a dozen engineers, some of whom are with operating companies, coal and metal; some with manufacturers; others with government agencies. The statement was accompanied by a questionnaire on the use of the rotating vane anemometer and by one describing two methods of using a mechanically held anemometer. The questionnaire will be considered first. The questionnaire and statement are as shown on pages 5 and 6, the committee members and respondents are given on page 4, and the general comments of the latter on page 5. Questionnaire 1. Has your company or agency issued written instructions for care and use of anemometers? If so, please enclose a copy with reply. Only one answer, McElroy's, was affirmative. It gave reference to Bureau of Mines publications1'5 which recom- mend the hand held anemometer for rough measurements and indicate that am accuracy of 5 pct can be had if calibration and method factors are used. Mathews said that instructions are principally oral while Maize reported that state inspectors of his department are well trained in use and care of anemometers. 2. Are your anemometers calibrated periodically? If so, by their manufacturer? or by? Are calibralion corrections applied to all observed mean velocity readings? Only one respondent, Lee, answered negatively as to calibration. This means that anemometers are generally calibrated but the questionnaire failed to ask how often this is done. As no one volunteered the information, we have no data on this point. In six cases the instruments are sent to their manufacturers for calibration. but Krickovic reports that his company limits manu-facturers' calibrations to anemometers which are used by operating personnel; those used by the engineering department being calibrated by U. S. Bureau of Standards. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has its ventilation engineers calibrate its anemometers. Most of the respondents say that a calibration correction is applied to each mean velocity reading, but Krickovic limits this to surveys made by the engineering department. Since Lee does not calibrate, he has no correction to apply. Maize reports that his department has its anemometers calibrated but does not apply corrections. 3. Do your men hold the anemometer by hand in measuring air flow? for 1 min? or traverse the section? for 1 min? or at? points for 5 sec each? Of 10 replies, 6 were "yes," 3 were "no," and one was "seldom" with respect to holding by hand. Among the six hand holders, four hold in a central position in the measuring section for a minute, except that two of them, Krickovic and Matthews, traverse the section by hand for survey or fan test. Their operating personnel hold by hand, centrally, for routine measurements. McElroy sometimes traverses with hand-held anemometer in rapid survey work. 4. If the anemometer is not held by hand, how is it supported? Augustadt supports the anemometer on an adjustable rod, Condon on "a rod of sufficient length to reach all points with observer standing in one position throughout traverse and at arm's length from plane of traverse." I presume that arm's length must be interpreted liberally enough to allow for arm movement, otherwise it would be impossible to manipulate the anemometer throughout the traverse section. Mancha upholds Condon in this method of traversing. Glanville hangs the anemometer on the end of a 4-ft staff by the hasp at the top of the anemometer frame. McElroy mounts it on the end of a rigid square shaft, 12 in. long, the staff being at right angles to the axis of the instrument. He traverses the section in two halves, holding the anemometer 3 feet from his body.

Mineral exploration activities are benefiting from new interpretive techniques which have become economically practical with computers. Government agencies, educational institutions, and industry have each contributed research and development efforts for improving the mathematical analysis and graphical display of exploration data, resulting in operational aids not foreseeable a decade ago. Progress has been worldwide and is expanding rapidly. Books 1-10 are supplementing the periodic literature, at least one abstracting service is now active, 11 and an association has recently been formed to encourage and publicize advances in this field. 12 With the diversity of applications, only partial coverage of the subject can be made at any single symposium. Four of the six papers in this section report on the current state-of-the-art in selected areas of interest: graphics, time-sharing, mathematics, and economic analysis. The remaining two papers are descriptions of advanced statistical techniques for gaining additional information during exploration, and illustrate methods which will become more commonly applied in the future. "Computer Graphics: A New Tool for Exploration and Mining" describes the use of a computer and accessory equipment as an information retrieval device, graphically merging and displaying pertinent information for visual inspection and interpretation. This is a rapid means of studying information which has been pre-stored in a form accessible to the computer. Time-sharing is a means of achieving a comparable rapid response when calculations are being performed. The paper, "Some Applications of Time-Sharing in Mining Geophysics," describes the experience of one company using a time-sharing facility for geophysical computations. Another paper on this subject, stressing mining applications, has recently been published. 13

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types.
