Dairy operations constitute ~2.5% of annual U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making dairies one of the largest sources of industrial GHG emissions. We are developing a novel, integrated system to achieve a net reduction in dairy GHGs while producing value-added materials and products. This integrated manure-to-commodities system converts dairy manure to bioenergy, sequesters carbon by converting volatile fatty acid-rich fermenter supernatant to bioplastics, and utilizes anaerobic digester (AD) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) reactor effluents to produce algae that can be harvested and internally recycled to enhance PHA production and sequester carbon. A decision-making tool is being developed for the integrated system that quantifies net GHG reduction, carbon sequestration, nutrient management and economics.

Preliminary experiments conducted in 1949 with a few diamond bits in which the diamonds in the bit crowns were set in hard-vector directions indicated that a substantial saving could be effected when a high percentage of the diamonds were oriented in this-manner. It was realized, however, that many additional tests would have to be performed before a positive trend could be established and the possibility of coincidence eliminated. Therefore, a long-range series of experiments was planned to investigate various phases of the problems related to the orienting of diamonds in diamond bits. This report (the third in a series) 2/3 presents the information obtained from tests conducted to investigate more fully the effects of orienting high-grade drill bort in diamond bit crowns. In these tests, the drill bort were oriented in both hard-vector and soft-vector directions in the crowns of AX-size bits. Test drilling was done in a dike of saussuritized dacite porphyry similar to a fine-grained granite in hardness e drillability.

The velocities of the three possible modes of elastic wave propagation have been calculated for single-crystal copper at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The results are presented as isospeed contours. The deviations between the direction of maximum energy flux and specimen axes are presented as arrows drawn on stereographic projections. The orientation factors associated with dislocation motion on the primary slip system only and also on all twelve slip systems have been calculated for all three elastic waves. The orientation factors associated with a longitudinal standing wave resonant specimen have also been calculated. The results of these calculatians are compared with earlier calculations on aluminum crystals and the relevance of these results to ultrasonic attenuation measurements is discussed. GREEN and inton' have recently outlined a procedure for determining the orientation factors for dislocation damping in single crystals. The stress field associated with a given mode of elastic wave propagation is resolved on the slip systems in which it is assumed the dislocations are vibrating due to this stress field. Since, at room temperature, slip has been observed on a limited number of systems in fcc and hcp metal crystals, it is assumed that these systems are the appropriate ones to use for the resolving process. This procedure has been applied to aluminum crystals by Hinton and hreen' and to zinc crystals by Henneke and Green.3 In the present paper the modes of elastic wave propagation have been calculated for copper crystals possessing orientations at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The deviation of the energy flux vectors from the specimen axis have been calculated for each mode. The stress field associated with each mode has been resolved on the (111)(110) slip systems in order to determine the orientation factors for dislocation damping. MODES OF ELASTIC WAVE PROPAGATION For any direction in a linear homogeneous aniso-tropic material three elastic modes can be propagated. In general, each of these modes has both longitudinal and transverse particle displacements associated with it and thus are not "pure" modes. However, there is always one component which is greatest in either a longitudinal or transverse direction and hence the mode may be referred to as quasi-longitudinal or quasi-transverse, accordingly. "THE REEVES MACDONALD mine is in the Sa Imo-Pend d'Oreille mining area of southeastern British Columbia. It is on the Nelway-Waneta road 4 miles west of the border-crossing point of Nelway. The Reeves orebody from which all production has come is one of several mineralized zones in easterly-striking limestones occurring between the Pend d'Oreille and the lower part of Salmo River.The property was originally located as two groups of claims by R. M, Reeves and J. H. McDonald. The two groups were consolidated in 1925. and extensive development work was done from then until 1930 and again in 1937, but no ore was shipped. The mine was reopened in 1947 and, between 1949 and 1953, 1,057,804 tons of ore was mined. Concentrates recovered contained 85,626 ounces of silver, 19,394,092 pounds of lead, 72,076,495 pounds of zinc, and 455,051 pounds of cadmium. Low metal prices forced the mine to close in 1953, but operations were resumed in November, 1955.The orebodies at the Reeves MacDonald mine are steeply plunging lead and zinc sulphide replacement deposits in a banded limestone named the Reeves limestone. The orebodies contain pyrite, honey-coloured sphalerite, and galena, and are surrounded by a dolomitized zone. In the Reeves orebody, where the relationships are known, the dolomite has the same general shape as the orebody. Four zones of sulphides are known on the property (see Figure 1). Three of these, the Reeves, B. L., and O'Donnell, are believed to be faulted segments of one mineralized zone. The fourth, the Point ore zone, exposed on the north bank of the Pend d'Oreille River, is not developed and its structural position is not known, but it appears to be a separate deposit."

Rio Tinto Bingham Canyon Mine started its South Wall Push Back (SPB) in 2011. This push back will mine through the only road to the pit bottom (the 10%). The pit bottom is the main ore sector for the mine and supplies about 80 to 90% of the ore. In late 2017 the mine set off a blast in SPB that created a small wedge failure on the high wall between SPB and the 10%. This wedge failure released a rock approximately 20 minutes after that blast that rolled down the wall landing on the 10% near and then contacting a light vehicle

"Longwall bituminous coal mining has been practiced in Pennsylvania since the 1970""s. Hundreds of longwall panels have been mined during the last 40 years but only 24 have actually undermined Pennsylvania's Interstate Highway System. The impact to interstate highways are summarized in this paper and the factors that influence the magnitude of these impacts are examined.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 30 years, interstate highways in Pennsylvania have been undermined by portions of 21 bituminous coal mine longwall panels. From 2003 to 2008, three of the panel were extracted by the Emerald Mine and six by the Cumberland Mine both in Greene County and both owned by Alpha Resources. Previous assessments of longwall mining under Pennsylvania’s interstates have identified impacts to the highways but no danger to public safety. In general the magnitude and extent of impacts during the recent undermining of Interstate 79 or 179 appears to be similar as those identified in previous studies. The nine longwall panels are among some of the widest in the U.S. They are supercritical in character with overburdens ranging from greater than 152 m (500 ft) to less than 305 m (1,000 ft).The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) requested that the University of Pittsburgh summarize observations collected by their staff during the recent undermining of 179. Observations and photographs of impacts to the highway were made by PA DEP staff and entered into reports prepared by California District Mining Office (COMO) staff and statements written into the Bituminous Underground Mining Information System (BUMIS) database. In addition to the observations by the PA DEP, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) conducted a series of detailed land surveys along portions of the highway undermined from 2003 to 2008. To characterize the subsidence basin fanned by longwall mining. PennDOT information has been analyzed by another research group within the university (Guticrre7, et al., 20 I 0)."

The oxidation resistance and fabricability of molybdenum powder-metallurgy alloys containing up to 20 wt pct nickel in the form of a fine dispersion were studied. The effects of dispersion distribution and of amount and type (pure nickel or nickel compounds) of additive were considered. A definite improvement in oxidation resistance was observed, but the amount of improvement fell far short of requirements for an oxidation-resistant alloy. Fabricability by hot-rolling was limited. INVESTIGATIONS at Ohio State university1 and Battelle Memorial institute2 have indicated that the attainment of a truly oxidation-resistant molybdenum-base alloy for high-temperature service, with the coincident retention of high-temperature strength and toughness, will be a difficult, if not impossible, feat. Among the most promising alloy systems studied was the molybdenum-nickel system shown in Fig. 1. Alloys in this system show good oxidation resistance at temperatures well above the normal melting point of molybdenum trioxide because of the regenerative formation of protective nickel-molyb-date (NiMoO4) on the surface of the alloy during exposure at high temperatures. Unfortunately, the required alloy content to obtain oxidation resistant molybdenum-nickel alloys far exceeds the limits of the narrow terminal solid-solution boundary, and closely approaches the peri-tectic composition involving the brittle intermetal-lic compound, MoNi. Because of the peritectic reaction, fusion alloys are characteristically brittle, since the MoNi phase, being the last to form, tends to occur as a continuous grain-boundary network around each molybdenum grain. An added problem with this system is that the protective nickel-molybdate layer formed at high temperatures is unstable, undergoing one or more allotropic modifications upon cooling. The volume changes associated with this modification during cooling are such as to cause violent expulsion of the protective molybdate coating from the surface of the piece. This is, of course, quite detrimental in material exposed to cyclic temperature during service. The research reported here resulted from an attempt to overcome the aforementioned problems associated with the molybdenum-nickel alloys primarily by controlling the amount, size, and location of the MoNi phase. By using powder-metallurgy techniques of alloy preparation and sintering the blended molybdenum-nickel powder mixtures at a temperature below the peritectic reaction temperature, molybdenum-nickel alloys with a randomly dispersed MoNi phase were produced. MATERIALS The molybdenum powder used in the preparation of alloys for this study was commercial hydrogen reduced, minus 325-mesh (Tyler) material. Master alloys, by which nickel was added, consisted of elemental carbonyl nickel powder (12 average particle size), an alloy of 50 wt pct Ni-50 wt pct Cr, and compounds of MoNi, Ni,Si, and Ni2B. The nickel-chromium powder was prepared by filing a vacuum-arc-melted ingot, separating impurities magnetically, and screening to minus 200-mesh. The MoNi powder was prepared by pulverizing a hydrogen-sintered powder-metallurgy compact to minus 325-mesh material. Further sizing of this powder for study of effects of dispersion distribution was accomplished by air classification of the minus 325-mesh powder. The Ni2Si and Ni2B powders were prepared by crushing vacuum-sintered powder-metallurgy compacts to minus 200-mesh material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation—The general procedure followed in the preparation of alloys for testing is described as follows: 1) Blending. Either hand-blending of the powders in a ceramic mortar and pestle for X 1/2 or mechanical blending was used. Hand-blending seemed preferable for optimum homogeneity. 2) Compacting. Most of the blended powders were pressed to green compacts at pressures of 15 tons per sq in. in a single-action die, although some were pressed at 80 tons per sq in. The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014. To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their Resource Development Navigation Study of ten existing or proposed port sites in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines examined the potential for mineral development around three Alaska port sites: Iliamna Bay, Kotzebue, and Nome. The mineral deposits near Iliamna Bay include gold, copper, and iron. Development of minerals in this area will require the discovery of new deposits or the definition of additional are reserves at known deposits. The mineral deposits near Kotzebue are primarily gold, copper, coal, lead, and uranium. Based on the character of these deposits, it appears that development of a small-scale mine supplying coal for regional use is the most likely scenario in the near-term. The mineral deposits near Nome are primarily gold and copper. Development of small underground gold mines is possible, however it appears that expanded offshore gold dredging will have the greatest impact on the flow of freight and goods through the Nome port in the near term.

The study of minero-petrographical characteristics and the subsequent textural and structural characterization of an ore mineral represents the first step of each industrial processing whose aim is the beneficiation of each valuable mineral phase present inside the ore. Analytical, mineralogical and petrographical, chemical and multispectral image analyses based investigations, applied to eclogitic ore samples deriving form "in situ" sampling campaigns, were applied. These procedures enabled to point out some textural and structural aspects characteristics of ore litotypes belonging to eclogitic-amphibolitic dikes. Such dikes are characterized by a paragenesis constituted mainly by siliceous gangue and accessory "useful titanium minerals" as rutile [TiO2], "pseudolilmenite", ilmenite [FeTiO3] and sphene [CaTiSiO5]. In the beneficiation process applied to ore s is of preliminary importance to establish a strategy in order to obtain a recovery of high quality "mono-minerals concentrates" as rutile, "pseudolimenite", ilmenite and phene. To reach this goal is thus necessary to develop a preliminary study of the textural, structural, petrochemical and minerochemical characteristics of the samples. Different ore samples (eclogitic rocks), resulting from sampling campaigns carried out in the Piampaludo area (Sassello district: Savona, Northern Italy), are examined.

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problem in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and long- lasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners of up to 1 m that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at a rate of 0.1 m per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This author (Einstein (1979). Einstein et al. (1972) (1975)) and others (Huller (19761, Grob (1972) (1976). Golta (1967), tienke (19761, Krause (1976). Lee et al. (1976)) have described many cases of swelling tunnels that illustrate the significance and magnitude of the problem. This paper intends to show that tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. . For this purpose the tunnel builder needs to know how to determine the existence and specific behavior of swelling ground, how to select appropriate structural characteristics of the tunnel and predict its performance under the specific ground conditions, and finally how to construct the tunnel such that the anticipated performance will be achieved. This concept of a design-construction procedure is the same as that for tunneling in general; it is mentioned here for NO reasons: 1. To point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way in which the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. 2. This paper will be structured corresponding to the procedural concept.

Onahama Smelter has two green-charge reverberatory furnaces and the annual smelting capacity is 600 thousand tons copper concentrate. In addition to the concentrate, various kind of industrial wastes has been processed and utilized. First, the brick waste from converter is ground and used as raw material of castable for repairing the copper melt launders. Second, the slag containing calcium-sulfide from other foundry is fed to the reverberatory furnaces. Calcium sulfide is oxidized to CaO. The melting rate of concentrate is accelenlled and the slag loss is decreased. Third, the tip tire made of waste car tire is charged into the reverberatory furnaces as fuel. The steam of waste heat boiler for turbine generators has been increased so as to decrease the electricity cost. Fourth, the sulfur accretion from other chemical plant is blended into the copper concentrate and the sulfur is recovered as the gypsum for sale. Fifth, the processed waste oil has been utilized in the copper concentrate dryer by which the smelting capacity was increased effectively. Consequently, Onahama smelter contributes to the society by processing the wastes to the harmless slag and utilizing them as fuel through the copper smelting.

O lingotamento contínuo é uma das etapas mais importantes na produção de aço, sendo um método rápido e eficiente na fabricação de placas ou tarugos através de processos de resfriamento onde o aço líquido é moldado e solidificado. Contudo, têm sido historicamente observado problemas de processo corrosivo acentuado na câmara de exaustão e na estrutura das máquinas da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. Os mecanismos deste processo corrosivo em máquinas de lingotamento contínuo, em geral, são variados e diretamente relacionados às condições operacionais da máquina, conduzindo a elevados custos de manutenção, diminuição da vida útil das máquinas, causando insegurança e interferindo na qualidade do produto. Este trabalho objetiva descrever as causas principais deste processo corrosivo e mostrar o desenvolvimento de testes que foram conduzidos visando a minimização deste fenômeno na máquina de lingotamento de placas #1 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão no ano de 2017.

The rapid depletion of known deposits of high-grade ore and the need for development of additional reserves, together with increased interest in open-pit mining of low-grade zinc-lead ores in the Tri-State District, led the Bureau of Mines to examine likely mining sites. Underground operations failed to remove all of the ore in a number of areas, and it appeared possible that some of them might be reworked successfully by low-cost open-pit methods. The South Carthage or Hull tract in Jasper County, Mo., was selected by Bureau engineers as favorable for the development of an open-pit mine.

WHAT I would like to do is to talk for a while tonight about the Canadian mining industry in wartime-at least, the Canadian mining industry as viewed through the eyes of the Metals Controller. There is nothing quite like the Canadian system in the system of controls in the United States, because the Canadian Controller combines the functions of a good many of the organizations here. I think the nearest counterpart would be the Divisional Chiefs of the WPB-although they have perhaps less authority and operate in a somewhat narrower field. My own field, as you know, is the metals and minerals-all of them, as a matter of fact, with the exception of steel and iron and coal and oil. And as I am responsible for supplies not only from domestic sources but also from foreign sources, I exercise most of the functions of the WPB and some of the functions of the Board of Economic Warfare. As my department is also responsible for stock-piling and for the financing of new operations, I therefore exercise some of the functions of the Metals Reserve and also of the Defense Plants Corporation. Being an administrator under the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, I also have the same function in relation w the price of metals as the OP A. The Canadian system of controls is compact, relatively simple, and I believe reasonably efficient. I think two of the reasons for that are that both the Controllers and the Directors of production are clothed with very wide authority, and also the fact that all the buying for the three arms of the service is done through the Department of Munitions and Supply, of which we are a part.

Today's civil and geotechnical engineers play an important role in helping to achieve sustainable infrastructure. To address environmental sustainability and climate change caused by green- house gas (GHG) emissions, all engi- neers must adjust their traditional approach to materials, design and construction practices to include a focus on minimizing carbon dioxide emissions. The considerable influence that geotechnical engineers have on projects provides an important oppor- tunity to affect positive change. The carbon footprint of the construction methods and materials used for foun- dations can be as much as 8-9% of a new building's total carbon footprint, and geotechnical engineers have an op- portunity to evaluate alternatives based not only on cost, but also the long-term environmental impacts. Growing environmental considerations and societal concerns are influencing the selection of construction materials and methods, including cement and concrete's role and significance for infrastructure applications today and in the future.

In this paper, it is investigated how different types of automation would affect the safety for workers in asphalt paving. The risk for the workers on road construction sites is consistently high in comparison to the average risk of the working population. Automation has been suggested as an alternative for improving the safety in roadside construction assuming that removing workers will inherently eliminate the risk of them being injured. In this paper, the potential for improving the safety using automation is analyzed in detail. By investigating accident statistics and understanding the type of accidents that appear, several different automated functions for increased safety are proposed and described. Based on available statistics, it is possible to estimate the safety benefit, as the reduction in fatalities, for several of the proposed functions. The highest safety benefit would be achieved by automating the road traffic driving through the work zones. This has the potential of reducing the total number of road worker fatalities with over 30 %. In addition, it would decrease the number of road traffic accidents in work zones. Automation of construction machinery and dump-trucks also has the potential to increase the safety.

The Ilimaussaq Intrusive Complex in south Greenland is a layered alkaline igneous body that is predominantly comprised of agpaitic nepheline syenites. The Complex is now recognized as containing vast resources of uranium in polymetallic ores that are also strongly enriched in rare earth elements (REEs) and zinc. Uranium and REEs are dominantly hosted in phosphate minerals with a minor proportion hosted in zirconium silicate minerals. Equivalent ores are yet to be mined for uranium anywhere in the world; however, studies are well advanced in confirming a process route to economically extract uranium. The Ilimaussaq Complex is considered the world?s type-locality for agpaitic rocks. Formation of the complex is attributed to four successive pulses of magma. The first produced an augite syenite, which now forms a marginal shell. This was followed by intrusion of a sheet of peralkaline granite. The third and fourth stages make up the bulk of the intrusion and are peralkaline to hyper-agpaitic in composition. The third batch of magma differentiated to produce pulaskite, foyaite and naujaite. Stage four produced the kakortokites and lujavrites, which are the units of particular economic significance. Kakortokites are strongly enriched in zirconium, niobium and tantalum, whereas the lujavrites are strongly enriched in uranium, rare earth elements, fluorine and zinc. Lujavrites are vertically zoned with arfvedonsite (black) lujavrites grading downward into aegerine (green) lujavrites. The upper most portions of the black lujavrites contain uranium concentrations of greater than 450 ppm, which decreases toward green lujavrites where uranium concentrations rarely exceeds 200 ppm. Resources defined to date in accordance with the Australian JORC code include 282 M lbs of uranium oxide at a grade of 280 ppm. With scope for several other similar sized resources within complex, the overall potential resource is of immense global significance. Metallurgical studies to date indicate that uranium can be successfully extracted from black lujavrites via an alkaline pressure leach method. This involves selectively leaching uranium with solutions containing carbonate and bicarbonate at elevated temperature and pressure. Uranium can then be recovered by hydrogen reduction to create a uranium oxide product. There is also scope to beneficiate ores as uranium and REE?s are hosted in specific mineral groups. Phosphate minerals can be effectively concentrated by froth floatation and uranium-bearing silicate minerals can be concentrated by gravitational methods. Studies indicate that REEs can be extracted from the residue following the alkaline leach process by a dilute hydrochloric acid wash, with REEs then precipitated in the form of a REE concentrate.

The Bureau of Mines studied environmental blast effects in six occupied residential structures. Airblast, ground, and structure vibrations were measured both inside and outside residences for seven quarry production blasts. Walls and floors responded to the blast noise and vibration by shaking at their own natural frequencies, often with greater peak particle velocities than the ground outside the structures or their foundations. The vibrations of the houses generated noticeable internal noise, correlating with the arrival of the groundborne energy. The later arriving airblast wave was predominantly at low infrasonic frequencies (1.0 to 1.5 Hz) and had similar amplitude and frequency characteristics both inside and out-side the structures. Significant structural motions resulted from the air-blast overpressures for at least two of the seven blasts. The most severe airblast effect occurred at a house 1,800 feet from a 5,047-pound (200-lb/ delay) blast. This stucture was subjected to a peak 0.16-in/sec particle velocity and 130 dB(L) airblast. The wall of the second floor responded to the ground vibration and airblast by shaking at particle velocities of 0.15 and 0.28 in/sec, respectively. Analysis of these data and those from additional field studies will be used to identify appropriate, safe, and reasonable impulsive noise levels, measurement techniques, and factors of design applicable to minimizing the adverse environmental effects of blasting.

Effective gas management in coal mines, as well as proper ventilation design, is very important for maintaining the safety of underground coal miners. Advances in numerical modeling techniques have enabled evaluations of the coal mining environment using advanced grid designs and computed gas distributions through detailed mathematical models. These models help engineers to see the unseen areas of the mine through visualization of the data and ultimately help improve worker safety. This paper summarizes the modeling efforts conducted by NIOSH in the U.S. and CSIRO in Australia to address various gas management issues encountered in longwall mines. The modeling studies involved two of the most widely used grid-based techniques, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical reservoir modeling. This paper discusses the application of these techniques for gob inertization and gas control for spontaneous combustion, pre-mining degasification of coalbeds, gob gas venthole design and performance evaluation in longwalls, and gas management during development mining.
