In striving to develop this discussion about "Manpower for Industrial Mineral Industries" two fundamental classes of manpower are encountered. These are: 1) The Labor Force, comprised of unskilled and semi-skilled, nonprofessional personnel who participate in conducting economic, mineral deposit operations and; 2) The Professional People involved in the science, engineering, and management of such industrial enterprises. The commentary given here will be directed primarily to a review of the characteristics of the second or latter class. To pursue successfully a career as a scientist or engineer in today's industrial and social complex, it is necessary that technical knowledge must have been acquired by training and study in an institution of higher learning. Also, to act effectively, the individual must have achieved some degree of specialzation, although this element often is developed to most notable degree by post-graduate exposure and experience. In addition, and especially in the case of "management," it is desirable, indeed it is even necessary, that an individual recognize and appreciate the fundamental humanistic-sociological controls, and their nuances, as these elements exist to shape his total environment.

The simultaneous electro winning of zinc and manganese from waste water treatment plant sludge was studied as a part of the overall research program, which was conducted to develop the methods for removal of environmentally hazardous metals from the Bunker Hill Superfund Site. This paper discusses the electrolytic method for recovery of zinc and manganese from the solution produced by leaching of sludge with S02 + H2S04. After three stage purification of the leaching solution, zinc and manganese were electro won simultaneously in an undivided electrolytic cell. Zinc was deposited on an aluminum cathode, while manganese was simultaneously produced (as Mn02) on a lead silver anode. The electrowinning parameters studied were the effects of: temperature, current density, electrode material, spacing of electrodes, composition of electrolyte, and electrolyte additives. Anodic and cathodic efficiencies were 30 and 91%, respectively. In light of the process design parameters discussed in the paper, which are affecting the electrowinning, these efficiencies were found as acceptable with regard to the quality and marketability of the products.

IN MAY, 1930, G. LaBine and E. C. St. Paul, prospect¬ing round the southeastern shore of Great Bear Lake, in the North West Territories of Canada, discovered pitchblende at what is now LaBine Point. At the same time, they also found native silver in a small sheared break on an island lying off the point. Late in 1930, samples of the pitchblende were sent to the Mines Branch, at Ottawa. The material consisted of several fair-sized slabs of botryoidal pitchblende banded with a brownish quartz. A small amount of chalcopyrite was visible as small particles and fine veinlets, and the pieces were rather heavily stained a yellowish-green by secondary copper-uranium salts. Analyses were run in the Mines Branch Ore Dressing Laboratories on two samples, and small-scale concentration tests were made on one of them. The results of this work were published in a Memorandum Series report (No. 48) of the Mines Branch, in March, 1931.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

Blasting conducted in the USA using the new Electronic Initiation System developed by Altech has shown that an accurate delay system will benefit the customer. Results from test work clearly showed that improved fragmentation was effected and blast vibration was at least similar to that currently found at the test venue with improvements possible.

After accepting the invitation to make this appearance today, it occurred to me that the subject matter which had been assigned to me, namely, the purpose and role of an advisor, was, contrary to what; some people might think, a controversial subject. In my brief lifetime, I have discovered that the world is full of advisors; that is to say, there are many people who undertake to render advice concerning subject matters upon which they may, or may not be qualified to speak. It shall be my purpose today to set forth what now appears to be the function of the members of the Advisory Council to the U. S. Public Land Law Review Commission; and, in so doing, I hope that I do not offend the Commission or any other-member of the Advisory Council with whom I serve. It has always been my personal conception of the role of an advisor that he should tender advice when it is requested, and then only if he has prepared himself concerning the matter upon which the advice is being given. I am sure it was the Congressional intent at the time the Public Land Law Review Commission was established indeed it was the hope. of Congress--that those of us who were to become members of the Advisory Council were informed upon certain particular subjects and then at the proper time express our opinions upon these subjects-and, by the same token, not attempt to enter opinions upon problems with which we have no experience in theory or in actuality. Some wag once said that if Columbus had had an advisory council, he would still be waiting at the dock in Spain, and there is more truth than fiction in that statement. With this problem in mind, let us examine the purpose of the Advisory Council itself.

This investigation was undertaken with the idea of studying a number of unconventional methods for making chromium to determine whether production cost could be lowered and to discuss some of the more recently described processes. These comprise carbon reduction of the oxide in vacuum, nitride dissociation, fusion electrolysis of the chloride, amalgam method, iodide dissociation, calcium reduction of the oxide, hydrogen reduction of the chloride, and reduction of this compound with zinc and with magnesium. Preference is given this latter method, which is shown in a flow sheet. Special attention is given purification of the chloride and separation of the vacuum at about 900° C. A reduction method for the elimination of traces of oxide contained in pure chromium by pure hydrogen obtained from the dissociation of zirconium hydride is described. The various methods are compared in a table in the appendix. Aluminothermic and silicothermic methods for the reduction of chromium oxide and the aqueous electrolysis have been disregarded in this investigation.

The current genesis of pisolites and channel iron deposits (CID) has been defined in a way that presents CID as unique in the world. The published material on detrital pisolites mostly details the West Australian CID; most other global occurrences of iron-rich pisolites would seem to have an in situ genesis. An alternate theory for the origin of the Hamersley CID is suggested, involving an older greensand protore derived from volcanic ash and deposited on a glaciated Hamersley surface. This paper presents the author's observations, sampling and mapping after several years study and exploration for pisolites and CID in WA and in some locations overseas. It is not what one would call scientifically complete, and possibly asks more questions than it answers, but it is presented as a point for discussion.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world's largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company's two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

IT does not seem practicable to review all the other specialized curricula that have developed in the mineral industries field in so much detail as has been given for petroleum. Nor is it easy to draw a definite line between true curricula, leading to a designated degree in the special subject, and options, which may range from the mere substitution of one or two courses for others ' in the final years to differences so extensive as almost to amount to separate curricula. Even to attempt to catalogue all the options that have been offered at one time or another would , require too much space. The remainder of this discussion, there- fore, will be confined to three topics which seem to be of major importance. Mining and metallurgical curricula will be covered in a later chapter. Geology The first, from the historical view, is geology in its relation to the mineral industries. Previous, chapters have made clear that in the early years of mineral industry instruction in the United States economic geology and mining engineering, so overlapped one another that men who were by training and experience economic geologists were appointed professors of mining, while men who had graduated as mining engineers sometimes developed into professors of geology. Even today men whose basic training was in- geology as a pure science, and who perhaps took a doctor's .degree in that subject, have attained such distinction in the mineral industries as to be universally accepted as "mining men," and their right to be regarded as mining engineers would not be questioned, even though 'they did not .take a degree in engineering. "The morphology of pellet feed is known to influence several properties of iron ore pellets, including drop number, compression strength and reduction properties. The effect of grinding method on the particle size, specific surface area and particle shape of an iron ore concentrate has been studied. Grinding methods considered were ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). 5 different samples (Blaine= 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100 and 2200 cm2g-1) were used to compare the size, shape and specific surface of particles for each grinding methods. Particle size was meticulously examined by sieve analysis, laser sizing and image analysis. In samples ground by ball mill, it has been observed that the fraction of particles <10µm increases from 39% to 46% as the Blaine number increases from 1800 to 2200 cm2g-1. For HPGR samples, corresponding figures are 41% and 49% respectively. It is evident that for samples ground by HPGR, the fraction of fine particles is higher than that of those ground in the ball mill. To measure the specific surface area of particles, Blaine and BET were used. A higher real surface area was observed from HPGR treatment in comparison to ball mill grinding, provided by a higher porosity, cracks, roughness and new surfaces. Shape factor of particles was determined using three descriptors: circularity, roughness, and aspect ratio. It was also observed that particles produced by HPGR were more elongated, less circular, and rougher than those processed by the ball mill. 1. INTRODUCTION Particle size and shape are important parameters that can significantly affect mineral processing plants and pelletizing plant performances (Brozek and Surowiak, 2007). It has also been proposed that green pellet quality is directly related to the amount of fine particles in a pelletizing plant (Dwarapudi et al., 2008; Umadevi et al., 2008; Gul et al, 2014; Van der Meer, 2015). Particle size distribution and specific surface area (SSA) are also key factors that can control the quality of green and fired pellets. Processing circuits generally reduce the fines fraction to lower than the required specific surface area (SSA). It is therefore necessary to regrind concentrates to produce suitable pellet feed for further treatment in the balling and firing steps [1, 2]. Two main methods are used for re-grinding of concentrate; high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and ball mill. Given the different forces used to reduce size in these methods, it is expected the shape of particles will be different (Pourghahramani and Forssberg, 2005)."

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300&#176;C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

The major greenhouse gas emissions from coal combustion are leading certain people to argue for uranium mining and nuclear power to meet these challenges. Although there is considerable rhetoric around promoting nuclear power as &apos;green&apos; due to its relatively lower greenhouse intensity, a careful study of the data is required to properly underst and the sustainability of uranium mining and nuclear power and whether it can or should have a role in future energy supply scenarios. This paper presents detailed research and analysis on uranium mining, focusing on known economic resources, production, solid waste and water management, pollution issues as well as energy and greenhouse aspects. A particular focus will be on Australia and its operating and prospective uranium mines. Overall, the paper raises fundamental issues concerning the long-term sustainability of uranium mining and nuclear power and documents the greenhouse intensity of uranium production and the nuclear fuel chain.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary and detailed exploratory examinations of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines from early in 1942 until the end of 1944. Among these investigations was that of the Jumbo magnetite deposit, which was visited by Stephen P. Holt, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, during a preliminary examination of the Copper Mountain and Jumbo properties September 15 to 18, 1943, During the months of June, July, and August 1944, a more detailed examination, which consisted essentially of mapping and sampling, was made by the authors working in conjunction with George C. Kennedy of the Geological Survey, Geological, topographical, and dip-needle contour maps were made of the area, and 97 channel samples were cut.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The role of pre-conditioning in a caving operation has multiple benefits, ranging from assisting with improved caveability, normalising fragmentation and improving draw point hang-up frequency. At Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Operations, both the Ridgeway Deeps block cave the Cadia East Panel Cave have utilised pre-conditioning using hydraulic fracturing. Seismic response data inside and outside the pre-conditioned volume show the benefit of treating the full caving block. Cadia East has further developed pre-conditioning to mitigate developing seismic hazards associated with major structures (fault-slip events) and managing mine-wide seismic hazards in new caving operations where the potential for large damaging seismic events exists due to high stresses and hard competent rockmasses. A case study reviewing the impact of pre-conditioning to mitigate seismic hazard associated with fault slip is presented. Cadia East operation undertook a targeted hydraulic fracturing program and reduced the overall number of large events as an example of the benefits of pre-conditioning. This paper will review the application of Hydraulic Fracturing at Cadia and discuss the geotechnical and seismological parameters of seismic events that occur within and outside of pre-conditioned rockmass volumes to demonstrate the benefits that Hydraulic Fracturing bring to future caving operations.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation that has been in production for 15 years. DOZ is located approximately 900 m below surface and has an average production rate of more than 5000 t/d. The footprint of the extraction level will ultimately be 900 m long and average more than 200 m wide. The undercut level is located 20 m above the extraction level.While developing Panel 1K on the northern portion of the extraction level, a major geotechnical problem was encountered when there was a change in lithology and an associated fault intersection. A large collapse of the hanging wall of the extraction level drifts occurred in the area of the fault intersection between February and March 2011. This was followed by a collapse of one of the undercut level drifts directly above the extraction level in May 2011.It was suggested that the best approach to mitigate risk during rehabilitation was to systematically open up the failed area under the protection of a steel set support system. To achieve this, approximately 60 t of grout was injected from the undercut level to fill the voids created when the rock mass between the two levels failed. A ground penetrating radar system was used to survey the condition of the rock mass between the two levels before and after the injection of grout. After the grout injection phase was completed to a satisfactory level of confidence, rehabilitation activities started on the extraction level by taking out the now consolidated material from inside the drift in 2 m advances from under steel sets initially constructed in secured ground.Controlled blasting was the key aspect to the success of the initiative to open up just enough of the drift to systematically support the rock mass before the next set was installed. The systematic support consisted of in-cycle shotcrete sprayed over mesh pinned to the exposed rock, as effectively as possible, with splitsets before spiling the next advance’s protection canopy with rebar. Once secure, a combination of steel set and pumped concrete was installed as the final support. This final support provided a safe platform to repeat the process until the failed zone was safely traversed.CITATION:Kurniawan, A, Sjadat, A and Akhasyah, M, 2016. "A new condominium project, The Atelier, developed by Pickus Companies located at the corner of Bryn Mawr and Sheridan in Chicago, IL required an earth retention system to protect the surrounding roads, alley, and existing neighboring apartment bui lding during its construction. Slurry Systems, Inc. (SSI) and Ground Engineering Consultants, Inc. designed the earth retention system using cantilevered sheet piling for three of the four sides: two sides bordering major streets and one side bordering an alley. For the fourth side, which borders an existing occupied brick building, a combination of sheet pil ing and AB. CHANCE® helical screw piers were used. SSI was actively involved in the review process of its earth retention system with the City of Chicago and quickly learned that there was no specific code for hel ical piers/anchors. (It appears that this is the case with most metropolitan cities throughout the United States). Consequently, the approval of underpinning for this project became the critical path, as much testing, calculations, meetings, and other details were required prior to its approval.SSI and AB. CHANCE® recognized that this process for underpinning approval must be seen by other contractors/suppliers who wish to use helical piers/anchors in the City of Chicago. Consequently, this project served as an opportunity to work with the City of Chicago and the City's Building Code Committee in furthering the development of the Helical Piers/Anchors Code, Section 1814. INTRODUCTION - HELICAL PIERSDefinition. A helical pier or anchor consists of one or more helix-shaped steel bearing plate(s) attached to a central steel stem (solid bar or pipe), which is installed by rotating or ""torquing"" into the ground. Each helix is attached near the tip, is circular in plan , and is formed into a screw thread with a defined pitch. Helical piers/anchors are pre-fabricated and can derive their load-carrying capacity through both end bearing and skin friction. The helical piers/anchors can be augmented with grout."

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions.
