The starting mill strip solution· for this study· is an ammonium uranyl tricarbonate solution of pH 8.2 containing 20g uranium/liter, after a DEPA/TOPO extraction process from sulfuric acid leaching liquor. To the first portion of the concentrated acidified strip solution, hydrofuoric acid is added at 95°C in reduced condition to obtain uranium tetrafluoride. The second portion of the uranyl carbonate strip is subjected to a precipitation step by admixing 0.3 volume of non-solvent precipitating agent such as acetone per volume of uranium. ·Uranium oxide (U30 8) is obtained from this precipitate by calcination for half an hour at 800°C in air. The third portion of the strip solution is neutralized to a pH 6.5 with sulfuric acid to precipitate iron and other contaminants. The solution is further acidified to a pH 1.85 with continuous air bubbling to remove CO2, followed by H2Ch precipitation at pH 3.5 to obtain uranyl peroxide. The latter is reduced by stannous chloride to obtain uranium trioxide dihydrate UO3. 2H20. Identifications, characterization· and purity of these products are carried out by complete chemical analyses, Scanning electron microscope study, tap density determination, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic investigations. The achieved results agreed well with that of the published data for these nuclear grade purity products.

This report is a proceedings of a briefing recently sponsored by the Bureau of Mines at which Bureau personnel presented findings from their research efforts to improve steelmaking techology currently used in the United States. The papers contained in this report address many areas of concern to the iron and steelmaking industry. Among these are improving arc stability in electric arc furnaces, preheating ferrous scrap to reduce energy consumption, fluorspar substitutes in steel-making, basic steelmaking refractories, corrosion of iron-based materials, improvements in stainless steel acid pickling processes, recycling of stainless steel dusts and other wastes, and use of wastes as a source of zinc for electro/galvanizing.

This little sketch of the late Willet G. Miller, Provincial Geologist of Ontario, is intended to be neither a biography of his career nor a eulogy of his life. His biography has already been written in an incomparable manner by Mr. T. A. Rickard, his eulogy by Canon Cody. What more can be said of Dr. Miller than is summed up in the words of that great Canadian divine, Canon Cody, that he was "Big in body, big in heart, and, as we learned, big in brain." This article, then, will merely record a few personal reminiscences of the man himself, and while they are necessarily disjointed, they may at least serve to illustrate certain traits in his character which are not generally known or appreciated outside of the circle of his intimate friends. In the latter part of May in the year 1904, Willet G. Miller, with two? assistants, set out for the small village of Haileybury to begin his geological work in the area a few miles to the south which he was soon to name Cobalt. At that time the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway was not finished, although the right-of-way was cleared and partly graded. The nearest railway station was on the Canadian Pacific at the south end of lake Timiskaming, from which point the old steamer Meteor carried passengers and freight up the long, narrow and deep waters of lake Timiskaming, a very pleasant trip of some sixty miles. On this particular trip there was a fairly large crowd on board consisting of settlers going into the clay belt north of lake Timiskaming, of lumbermen, and of a few merchants and commercial travellers who were interested in the small business centres of Haileybury, New Liskeard and Ville Marie. Scarcely any attention was paid to the reports of the newly found silver deposits, although the daily papers had announced discoveries in the district six months before. As a matter of fact, the chief excitement on board was afforded by a moose, which, in swimming from the Ontario to the Quebec shore of the lake, crossed the bow of the boat, the captain steering to within a few yards of the terrified animal.

PYRITE, the bisulphide of iron, FeS2, is found more or less in all coal-beds: but, as a rule, in certain definite forms. More than any other impurity, it detracts from the commercial value of a coal-deposit, and yet its presence is so universal that it might almost be said that there is no coal entirely free from pyrite. My observation has been confined to the Pennsylvania bituminous and semi-bituminous coals, and to them, therefore, my remarks will be confined. Certain generalizations which I may make, however, will be found of universsl application. The lowest members of the coal-formation, No. XIII. of the Pennsylvania bituminous region, are nearly always pyritiferous, and in many cases highly so. In Cambria county, for instance, coalbed A, the Brookville, is locally known as the " Sulphur seam." The Lower Kittanning, in parts of Clearfield county, is so sulphury as to be almost unmarketable, though otherwise it is a strong locomohive coal. In Mercer county the Pardoe bed, so extensively mined there, carries great quantities of sulphur in the form of pyrite, though usually this can be separated in such a way as to detract little from the market-value of the coal. Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

Except in the old Catalan forge, or its modifications, attempts to make iron and steel directly from ore in a practical and economical manner have failed so frequently and completely that such schemes are looked upon with justifiable distrust. Without exception, all have failed from one cause or another, although in some instances every indication of a practical success was manifest in the beginning. It is, therefore, necessary to carefully examine and consider every detail affecting the process, or more properly, furnace, under consideration. This I have done to the best of my ability during a long visit to Russia last summer, and after satisfactorily observing the practical success of the furnace in the iron works of Count Stroganoff at Dobriansky in the Government of Perm, I decided to investigate as completely as possible the history of similar furnaces in Finland and Russia. These data, sifted and verified with the greatest possible care, form the substance of the present paper.* An illustration on page 321 of Percy's Iron and Steel shows the old type of Osmundssmide or harkugnar, which has been in use in Northern Europe since pagan times. Fig. 1 shows a furnace of this kind. It should, perhaps, more properly be called a high-bloomary furnace or forge, the Swedish word hark meaning bloom or loupe. It was with this type of furnace that Mr. Husgafvel began his experiments at Porsaskoski in 1875. Attempts to obtain better results with larger furnaces of this type were failures, as every bloom or loupe obtained necessitated blowing out the furnace with a consequent large waste of fuel. A larger furnace of course increased this waste with no corresponding advantage. A movable hearth of threeeighth inch iron, lined with a mixture of clay, quartz and lime, was next tried, but in consequence of the frequent repairs of this lining,

The challenge of Contract C19E1 of Boston's Central Artery Project called for the construction of two roadways under the commuter rail yard at North Station. Two options were offered for the method of their construction: Slurry Wall Roof-First or Soft Ground Tunneling. The instability of the indigenous soils seemed to rule out the use of tunneling, so the slurry wall method was chosen. However, these soils were incapable of holding up during slurry trench excavation. After many episodes of ground loss on early panel excavations, Modem Continental Construction suggested a method of trench wall stabilization. The Contractor (MCC) both suggested wall stabilization method and requested that the owner participate in the funding for the effort. The Project and the Contractor were able to agree on a solution which resulted in collapse-free excavation...and found an innovative way to fund the solution.

Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.

No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

"IntroductionCIRCULAR structures on the Arctic islands were first noticed early after World War II. During the indexing of the 1950 Royal Canadian Air Force photographs their occurrence was brought to the attention of the Geological Survey of Canada by Mr. W. B. Waugh, Surveyor General. As a result, I. C. Brown ( 195l) of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the air photographs of these structures and discussed theories that might explain their origin. The author, as a member of the Geological Survey of Canada, spent several months in 1952 and 1953 in reconnaissance study of the geology of Ellef Ringnes island, using the Isachsen meteorological station as a base. Twelve days in the summer of 1953 were spent mapping the Isachsen dome and adjacent areas. The Isachsen dome, one of several similar structures occurring on Ellef Ringnes island, is situated 35 miles southeast of the meteorological station.PhysiographyEllef Ringnes island is a mature, stream dissected plain having an average elevation of about 400 feet. The surface of the plain is undulating with a relief of about 150 feet; only a few of the numerous streams that form a dendritic drainage pattern have eroded valleys this deep. Long, low, cuesta escarpments cross' the plain, which is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Lower Cretaceous and possibly younger age. The sedimentary strata have a low regional dip to the southeast; exceptions are found in the vicinity of the domes, where the strata are up-turned, and in the plateau region, northeast of Deer bay, where they are flat lying. The plateau, which is underlain in large part by basalt, is deeply dissected and has an average elevation of 1,000 feet."

The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to treat waste water that contains cyanide. This report describes a new method that removes heavy metals and all forms of cyanide. In the first step, hydrogen peroxide and sodium thiosulfate are added at pH 7 to 9 in a 1:2 molar ratio to convert free and weakly complexed cyanide to nontoxic thiocyanate. Then steryldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is added to precipitate ferro-cyanide, and finally, ferric sulfate is added as a sweep floc and sequestrant for heavy metals. After the suspended solids settle, the water is polished by filtering. The water initially contained 1 to 5 mg/L Fe, 1 to 5 mg/L Cu, and 10 to 30 mg/L total cyanide; the level of each of these constituents was reduced to less than 0.02 mg/L.

The processing of EAF baghouse dusts, rolling mill scales, and belt grinding swarfs from the specialty steel industry will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions, filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, super alloy wastes, and nickel-cadmium batteries. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery.

In tank-lixiviation, the extraction of the silver from chloridized ore by solutions of hyposulphite salts is performed by filtration. The ore-particles are kept stationary, while the solvent moves down through the mass of ore. The quickness of extraction, other conditions alike, is in direct proportion to the rapidity of the movement of the solvent through the ore. The solution, if left in contact with the ore without moving, displays but very little solving energy. If the filtration is interrupted for ten or twelve hours, and thus solution and ore are left in complete contact for that length of time, it mill be found that, when filtration is started again, the outflowing solution is but very little more saturated with silver than it was at the time of interruption, and that the ten or twelve hours were almost a perfect loss in the total time of extraction. Notwithstanding the long contact, the solution had not become saturated with silver chloride to its full solving capacity. A rapid movement of the solvent through the ore is essential to a quick extraction. This fact is well known ; and the endeavor of leachers has been to hasten extraction by increasing the rate of filtration. Siphons, vacuumpumps and other devices have been used with more or less success; but none of them have given full satisfaction. I have found that, if chloridized ore is brought into rapid contact with a proper volume of moving sodium hyposulphite solution, the silver chloride contained in the ore dissolves almost instantly, and that it is rather the volume of the solvent than its concentrated state which produces this effect. Such favorable conditions cannot be attained in tanks. The rapidity with which a certain volume of the solvent can be brought into contact with the ore-particles is limited by the speed with which the solution descends through the ore; and thus the leaching-time in tanks cannot be shortened beyond the limit set by the filteringcapacity of the ore. "Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) measurements were taken at Tronox’s Westvaco Trona mine in Wyoming. Both shift-average and real-time monitoring using Elf pumps and Airtec analyzers, were used. The mine’s underground transportation fleet consists of more than 250 diesel-powered vehicles. A vehicle monitoring log tracked fleet usage during the test; logged data consisted of vehicle type, direction of travel, and time. The log was used in analysis to determine the DPM spread rate, of normally operating equipment, in the different entries with respect to vehicle location. Airflow velocity measurements at the stations were taken during the survey. The survey results also identified vehicles with higher emission rates. An ECOM gas and a MAHA DPM analyzer, both located in the mine’s underground emission shop, were used to obtain various vehicle emission rates. The correlation of the workshop and field measurements was investigated with regard to the machine activity, fuel usage and atmospheric conditions. The results were used to identify and execute a ventilation project to reroute 45% of diesel shop air back to intake entries, by interlocking an automated door and a regulator. The result is reduced DPM downstream. INTRODUCTION DPM has been classified as a potential occupational carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rule governing DPM exposures in metal and nonmetal mines cites total carbon (TC), a summation of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) obtained by NIOSH Method 5040, as a surrogate for determining DPM exposures (Noll, 2006). MSHA personnel use the 1973 sampling criteria outlined by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for collecting compliance-based respirable and inhalation samples in metal/nonmetal mines. Instrumentation developments are allowing improved real time monitoring of ventilation parameters. DPM is within the aerodynamic particle size range of the samplers used for respirable and inhalable dust measurements. If a sampler used by MSHA to collect inhalable or respirable dust samples in underground metal/nonmetal mines was used to collect DPM, both the DPM and mine ore dust would accumulate on the sample filter (Noll, 2006). To comply with the requirement and lower the DPM exposure, mines are implementing a variety of control technologies such as emission based maintenance programs where adjustments or repairs are performed on the vehicles (McGinn, 2000)."

Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. Their corresponding orientations are termed as the first principal grip angle (a1) and the second principal grip angle (a2). A series of experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Twelve

Workers at the Consolidated Aluminum Corp. primary aluminum smelter at Lake Charles, LA walked out at midnight March 31 when their contract expired. Management personnel operated the smelter and prebaked carbon anode facilities until an agreement for a new 3-year contract was reached April 18. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) began operations at its can recycling facility at Taylor, MS. The facility can process 3 million pounds per month of aluminum and steel cans. Alcoa announced plans to increase the capacity of its aluminum paste and flake production plant at Logan's Ferry, PA by 50 percent. Completion was scheduled for mid-1980.
