Rockfalls are major and essentially unpredictable sources of danger, particularly along transportation routes (roads and railways). Thus, the assessment of their probability of occurrence is a major challenge for risk management. From a qualitative perspective, it is known that rockfalls occur mainly during periods of rain, snowmelt, or freeze-thaw. Nevertheless, from a quantitative perspective, these generally assumed correlations between rockfalls and their possible meteorological triggering events are often difficult to identify because i) rockfalls are too rare for the use of classical statistical analysis techniques and ii) all intensities of triggering factors do not have the same probability. In this study, we propose a new approach to investigate the correlation of rockfalls with rain, freezing periods, and strong temperature variations. This approach is tested on three French rockfall databases, the first of which exhibits an outstandingly high frequency of rockfalls (approximately 950 events over 11 years), whereas the other two databases are more typical (approximately 140 events over 11 years). These databases come from (1) the national highway RN1 on La Réunion Island, (2) a railway in the Bourgogne-Franche Comté region, and (3) a railway in the Auvergne region. Whereas a basic correlation analysis is only able to highlight an already obvious correlation in the case of the “rich” database, the newly suggested method appears to detect correlations even in the “poor” ones. Indeed, the use of this method confirms the positive correlation between rainfalls and rockfalls on La Réunion Island database. This method highlights a correlation between cumulative rainfalls and rockfalls in the Bourgogne region, and it detects a correlation between the daily minimum temperature and rockfalls in the Auvergne region. This new approach is easy to use and also serves to determine the conditional probability of rockfall function of a given meteorological factor. This approach will help to optimize risk management in the studied areas based on their meteorological conditions. Nevertheless, even if some rockfalls are correlated to meteorological factors, other seems to occur independently of these factors, which highlights the unpredictability of rockfall hazard.

Addition of Kastone® peroxygen compound and formaldehyde to cyanide gold extraction process effluents, containing at least 5 mg soluble copper per liter, will oxidize acid-dissociable cyanide to levels less than 0.2 mg per liter, without appreciable oxidation of thiocyanate. Most of the copper precipitates and is removed by filtration of the treated solutions. The treatment can be completed in less than 2 hours when the excess of hydrogen peroxide over the cyanide is about 75-100 mg per liter. The excess hydrogen peroxide destroys residual formaldehyde and then is catalytically decomposed by the copper-containing solids that separate, so it will not interfere with subsequent operation. A pilot plant using this technology has been operated for more than four months at rates from 1-2 gpm. Clear, filtered effluent containing less than 0.2 mg acid-dissociable cyanide per liter has been produced.

Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. The results obtained from this process provided confidence in the conceptual extraction rules and allowed the derivation of final extraction rules that will be implemented at the operation as the multiseam mining process becomes more widespread.CITATION:Hanekom, J W L, Roberts, M K C, Magwaza, M G, Lousteau, R and Piper, P, 2014. Many different approaches have been used in the past to characterise iron ore sinter mineralogy to predict sinter quality and elucidate the impacts of iron ore characteristics and process variables on the mechanisms of sintering. Characterisation techniques include optical image analysis and point counting, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the objectives of the measurement. It is generally acknowledged that silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is very important to the quality of the sinter produced; however, strict definitions of the phases and textures of SFCA are not generally agreed. This paper summarises the state-of-the-art in sinter characterisation applied in Australia by both academics and industrial researchers. "PURPOSEThe purpose of this presentation to the Canadian Mineral Processors is to review gold heap leaching systems currently in use and discuss their applicability to Canadian ores. The author's experience with the development and operation of heap leaching spans the past four years at. Pinson, and visits to many ether heap leaches in the western United States.INTRODUCTIONBy way of introduction to the heap leaching system, I will describe in slight detail the method used at Pinson Mining in northern Nevada. This will be followed by a discussion of optional methods in use at other operations visited.The Pinson orebody is a finely disseminated, well-oxidized hydrothermal deposit. Gold particles are finer than 20- microns. The orezone hostrocks are metamorphosed and silici¬fied limestone and shale. Sulfides and carbonaceous materials are negligible.The Pinson open-pit mine has operated since June 1980. It produces 1500 tpd of C.I.P. mill feed averaging .10 oz gold per ton, and 1500 tpd of heap leach material averaging .025 oz gold per ton. Cutoff grades are 0.04 for mill feed, and 0.01 for heap leaching. Stripping ratio is 9 tons of waste and leach grade to 1 ton of mill feed.The project is located in northern Nevada at 4900 feet above sea level.,Winters are fairly severe, with freezing conditions affecting operations from early December through April. Although officially designated as ""high-mountain desert"" country, snow and/or freezing rain occur almost every week of the winter.To date, all Pinson production-scale heap leaching has treated run-90,000 tons of ore are stacked on 300 foot square clay leach pads. Cyanide leach solution is applied through ""wobbler"" sprinklers at .0025 gpm/sq ft for 60 to 90 days. The pregnant solution flows from the heap by gravity to plastic-lined ditches, into a collection sump and then through buried piping to the 2.2 million gallon pregnant solution pond."

The objective of this study is "to assess the impact of surface mining on soil compaction in the Midwest". The study revolves around a unique field sampling program targeted at four mine sites utilizing four distinct types of soil movement of midwestern prime land. Through the preparation of a final report for use as a guidebook, an assessment is made of the degree to which surface mining operations contribute to the soil compaction problem. The final report is formulated through the use of field study data as well as information gathered in an intense literature review. The final report centers on applying collected data to practical field applications. Soil sampling on the four mine sites centers on a comparison of natural and replaced soils for moist bulk density. This characterization evaluates changes in density and texture throughout the soil profile to a depth of 48 inches. Fertility of the topsoil is also assessed for natural and replaced soils. During field sampling and observations, a base of information has been gathered to compile a case study on each mine site. The report accesses the regulations in the prime farmland areas through the use of a matrix. The regulatory matrix allows easy access of mining personnel to State and Federal regulations.

The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. "India’s economy is expanding with rapid urbanization. Improvement in infrastructure is a keystone to the Indian government’s economic plans, including expansion of transit systems. Most of these systems are designed with elevated and underground sections. New Delhi, a city of 23 million people, suffers from heavy traffic congestion and pollution. The transit (metro) system is seen to be of critical importance. Phase 3 of the Delhi transit system project is 140 kilometers (km), with 40 km of twin-bore tunnels requiring 35 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for construction. Transit systems are also under design or construction in Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Mumbai. Most have twin-bore tunnels. At present, 55 TBMs are operating on underground metro construction, and future projects will increase this number. This paper highlights the unique challenges of construction of underground metro systems in highly congested urban environments, using Kolkata and Delhi systems as examples. INTRODUCTION The first transit system in India was constructed in Kolkata (India’s third-largest city by population.) This line is 28 kilometers (km) in length, has underground and at-grade sections, was built in phases, runs north/south, and has 24 stations. This project was sanctioned in 1972, started construction in 1984, and was completed in 1995. The tunnels were constructed primarily by cut and cover methods with some open-face, compressed air shield tunneling. In 2006, the urban transport policy recommended construction of transit rail systems in all urban cities with a population exceeding 2 million. Further, in 2014 the central government stated that it would assist in financing transit systems in all cities with a population of over 1 million. In 2015, the central government approved the development of transit systems in 50 additional cities across India with a budget of $75 billion (see Figure 1). Transit development is just part of a huge expansion in planned rapid transport systems, which include metro, bus, high-speed rail, and monorail systems. Metro systems will include elevated and underground sections with twin-bore tunnels and underground stations. In the Delhi/National Capital Region (NCR), now the largest city in India by population, Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) was formed in 1995 as a joint venture company between the central government and Delhi state. DMRC operates the Delhi metro system. (see the case studies described later in this paper). DMRC has developed an external function to carry out studies and to offer consultancy to other cities planning transits. Since its inception, DMRC has produced Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for every metro and monorail project in India. In 2012, DMRC became a partner in the management consultancy for Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit System, its first project overseas. DMRC became a model organization for other cities to follow. These cities have included Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Nagpur. Other cities (e.g., Lucknow and Patna) are in the metro planning phase. Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

Recent studies on the physico-chemical properties of molten slags and oxide solid solutions of interest is reviewed. The review covers redox and phase equilibria in slags, viscosity, diffusivity, electrical conductivity, kinetics of interfacial reactions between slags and CO-CO2, interfacial properties and phenomena. Some highlights from ongoing work on modelling phase diagrams, component activity, viscosity and electrical conductivity of multi-component slags will be presented and results compared with published experimental data on slags with or without suspended solid phases.

Stability condition of underground excavations have to be assessed to guarantee safe operations within the quarrying working areas. This objective requires a reliable assessment of the rock mass natural state of stress and of the stress redistribution induced by the excavations. This goal is often complicated by difficult geological conditions induced by tectonic stresses, complex topographies and large and irregular excavation geometries. Consequently, the acting state of stress needs to be measured by specific in situ measurement devices. This work refers on an in situ measurements campaign carried out by CSIRO tests in an underground quarry located in the Carrara marble basin. The difficult path carried out for interpretation of the measurements is described in this paper. In particular, the numerical modeling performed using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) first, to study the influence of both surface topography and excavation geometry and then the Distinct Element Method (DEM) to evaluate the influence of rock discontinuities in the measurement zone are illustrated in this work. Parametrical analysis of the rock mass mechanical features is also described in order to calibrate the numerical models and analyze the experimental results. The work has been carried out trough several phases, which are: characterization of the rock mass through geostructural surveys: this allowed us to classify the rock mass and determine the mechanical and physical parameters necessary for modeling; on-site measurement of stress levels through the application of over coring techniques; numerical analyses for the simulation of excavation phases, using the Examine3D (BEM) engineering analysis code. comparison between the measured stress levels and those numerically calculated and subsequent calibration of the BEM model; Numerical model of the forecasted excavation based on the calibrated (BEM) model.

"AbstractThe PRESS-IN METHOD is widely recognised as “an environmentally friendly piling method”. However, this characteristic is only one of the fundamental advantages of the method and this paper presents the most up-to-date capabilities of the method. Due to the evolution in recent years, the Press-in Method is now applicable to 2.5m thick retaining walls, over 50m deep foundations, overcoming rock conditions and confined construction conditions.The Press-in PrinciplesThe basis of the Press-in Method is simple. The Silent Piler presses a pre-formed displacement pile into the ground by static jacking force. The reaction for the Press-in Force is generated by gripping previously installed piles. As a pile is pressed into the ground, “A Pressure Bulb” is formed around the pile toe. Accordingly, higher bearing capacity can be generated compared to driven piles without disturbing the ground and producing any vibration. The Bureau of Mines evaluated various methods for identifying sources of mercury vapor in excess of the threshold limit value (TLV) of 0.05 mg of mercury per cubic meter of air set by the American Council of Government and Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for mines and mineral processing plants. Chemical spot tests and portable devices for mercury determination were evaluated, based on information from published sources and performance in laboratory tests. Among the parameters examined were sensitivity, interferences, cost, ease of use, and other factors pertinent to field application, More than 50 methods were evaluated. The investigators found that many readily available methods are suitable for identifying sources of mercury vapor in mines and mineral processing plants. The best method appears to be one that uses a commercially available mercury test paper sensitive only to mercuric ions. For some of the more promising chemical spot tests, this report includes step-by-step instructions for field application.

The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.

Utah's abundant industrial rock-and-mineral resources support a relatively small but important sector of the State's economy. In 1983, six of the top 10 nonfuel mineral commodities (by value) were industrial commodities. Portland cement was ranked fourth, potash fifth, halite sixth, phosphate seventh, construction sand and gravel eighth, and lime tenth. Portland cement was produced by three operators, principally from the Jurassic Twin Creek Limestone. Potash was produced by three companies from Pennsylvanian beds in the Paradox Basin, surface brine of the Great Salt Lake, and subsurface brines of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Halite was produced by eight operators, primarily from surface brine of the Great Salt Lake. Additional production came from salt beds in the Jurassic Arapien Shale, solution mining of the Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation of the Hermosa Group, and subsurface brines of the Paradox Basin. Phosphate was mined by one company from the Permian Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Park City Formation. Construction sand and gravel were produced by dozens of operators, primarily from Quaternary Lake Bonneville beach and nearshore deposits. Lime was produced by four operators from Paleozoic formations in the Basin and Range physiographic province of Utah. The future production of these and other industrial commodities, though individually uncertain, is expected to increase gradually as a group. Factors favorable for the future of the industrial commodities industry in Utah include large to almost unlimited resources for the major commodities, a healthy projected population growth, an abundant local supply of relatively inexpensive energy from coal and natural gas, and a favorable corporate tax structure and business climate.

The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

"The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

In September, a fleet of 363-t (400-st) Liebherr trucks became operational in Brazil and have already begun moving iron ore in Para state. Prior to the arrival of the the trucks the Brazilian fleet relied on trucks up to 218 t (240 st). With the addition of the 363 t (400 st) trucks, the fleet has since experienced the high productivity offered by Liebherr T 282 B trucks.

In Taiwan, around 8,000 tons of batteries are consumed per year but only 17% of which were collected and transported to oversea for recovery. The dumping used batteries have become a potential environment problem. How to increase the collection efficiency of used batteries is an important issue for EPA in Taiwan. Besides, some treatment plants are on process to get permission for recovering used batteries. The objective of this study is to estimate the recycling cost of spent consumer battery and explore the feasibility of recovering used consumer batteries in Taiwan based upon the principle of cost-efficiency. The recycling cost including collection cost and recovery is estimated based on a survey.
