This report includes data for 1961 on injury experience, with related employment statistics, at coal mines in the United States. These data are presented in tabular form under the following headings: General Injury Experience Tables 1 to 6: Current data on number of injuries, degree of injury, frequency and severity rates, average severity, and related employment and production data by work location.

The Mount Isa Mines Copper Mine in Mount Isa started producing copper in 1966. The Copper Mine gradually increased production rates to nearly six million tonnes per year. Over the last three years the mine has been in a gradual ramp down due to the reduction of primary ore sources and head grade. The majority of ore sources are predominantly in pillar retreat sequences bounded by multiple fill masses. There also a substantial lower grade resource delineated to the south of the main orebody. These remaining ore sources present significant engineering challenges to obtain a safe and cost-effective extraction. Stope designs have become increasingly complex and require additional engineering and operations input and analysis. This paper describes the major planning and operational challenges and issues associated with the stope design and extraction of an orebody in the later stages of mine life.

"INTRODUCTION Use of sensor technology applied to the gravimetric beneficiation is intended for the selective preconcentration or separation of various minerals. Sensor Based Sorting (SBS) uses sensors to identify the particles and separate them by a mechanical process (flap) or pneumatic ejection valves (Wotruba et al. 2014). The principle of the SBS technology to separate mineral particles consists of three phases which cover feed,detection and separation. (killmann, 2009 Apud nienhaus et al. 2014). The applicability of the technique in an early stage of beneficiation enables free particles and poor grade to be a part of the process. The mass of tailings to be processed can be removed at the initial stage to save energy, water and equipment maintenance (Wotruba et al. 2014). Lindner (2010) suggested that the use of SBS technology would only will be possible if there exsists an electromagnetic interaction in all the wave spectra interacting with the solid ore. The interaction of electromagnetic waves depends directly on the characteristics of the material. The material receives a spectrum of electromagnetic waves by irradiation and this results in a reduced wavelength with differing types radiation such as fluorescence, reflection, remission, absorption, transmission and transmission. The frequency of the wave spectrum varies between 1000 and 1020Hz, illustrated by the data in Figure 1, which shows that each type of sensor emits a wavelength inversely proportional to the frequency ranging from 10-11pm to 104km, and the frequency that varies between EHz 103 and 1020kHz. The difference between the electromagnetic spectrum variations can only be visible to the human eye at wavelengths with intervals between 380nm and 780nm (Wotruba et al. 2014). One of the main advantages of operating with imaging sensors is the versatility of the images which can take on zero, one, two or three dimensions shown below as a point, a line, an area or a spatial image, as illustrated in Figure 2. According to Schubert (1988), to separate a mineral particle it is necessary to follow the characteristics of mineralogy, physics and chemistry with or without use of water. The use of new technologies can help reduce operating costs and improve utilization of mineral resources."

Introduction A computer program was developed for analyzing drum-type hoists before modifying an existing system or designing a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking technical assistance from mine hoist designers and manufacturers. The user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and analyzes hoisting systems for any balance state. The program can be used to calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate, solve for drum face width, select a permissible wire rope, estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant, and estimate annual power cost. Whether required for a large mining complex or for a relatively small operation, a hoisting system must be carefully designed to ensure the efficient, reliable, and safe flow of material. Because shaft sinking and hoist installation can total between 2.5% and 3% of the cost of opening a deep mine, proper hoist selection is critical. Today's mining engineer has at his disposal the most powerful design and analytical aid ever, the microcomputer. There is, unfortunately, limited software for the study of hoisting systems, unlike that for other materials handling equipment (Manula and Albert, 1980; Prelaz et al., 1964; Bucklen, 1969; Thompson, 1985). HOIST reduces a time-consuming set of calculations to a concise package of interrelated subprograms. A literature review revealed no common-user programs to analyze hoisting systems, although at least four major hoist designers/manufacturers/installers have their own in-house programs. To provide a tool with which the mining engineer could preliminarily analyze a materials hoisting system or could check the calculations of a hoist contractor, a computer program was developed. HOIST was written in BASIC for the IBM-PC for ease of program adaptation and to encourage field use on compatible systems. Details of program development are omitted, since the basic principles of hoisting analyses are relatively straightforward, simple, and readily accepted (Harmon, 1973; Nordberg, n.d.; Adler, 1957). Program features, intended usage, and benefits of the computerized solution are emphasized over theory development and mathematical rigor. Background The mine hoist system that is selected and installed at a mine is the "lifeline" of that mine, with installations lasting 20 years or more. Thorough study is warranted to ensure that productivity demands are met at a minimum cost per ton. The increased cost of a large, powerful, high-speed hoist must be offset by increased production to justify its selection. To optimize this tradeoff, an extensive hoisting analysis should be performed. The analyses to properly size the skip (or cage), the drum, and the hoist drive are conducive to computerization, permitting rapid evaluation of changeable operating and design parameters, such as velocity, acceleration, state of balance, and productivity demand. The program is particularly useful in conducting sensitivity trials, such as investigation into the effect of change of productivity on skip capacity and on horsepower of the hoist drive. HOIST is currently limited to the study of drum-type hoists with cylindrical drum(s). However, only minor changes to the program would permit analysis of friction hoists and conical drum configurations. Model development and testing The program is based on accepted equations and physical relationships. Examples of manual calculations formed the basis for decision points and program branching. Data is input in the order that it would be needed if the problems were solved manually. The choices are arranged likewise. HOIST was developed in sections, with manual solutions performed to check program logic. The testing became more rigorous as sections were completed. Output from one section becomes input for following sections, as appropriate. The simplified flow diagram of HOIST is given in Fig. 1.

"Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines. Of the in-use RAs, over 95% are mobile RAs with the remainder being built-in-place (BIP) RAs. Heat/humidity buildup has been one of the major concerns with mobile RAs. For BIP RAs, however, there is a lack of in-mine heat/humidity test data to determine the extent of heat and humidity buildup. To quantify heat/humidity buildup in BIP RAs, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of heat/humidity tests on a 60-person BIP RA with and without a borehole air supply. At various times during the year, tests were performed with cooled, heated, or unconditioned borehole air to examine how various outdoor temperatures may affect the thermal conditions inside a BIP RA. The results show that the air supplied to a BIP RA may require heating and cooling, depending on the outside air temperatures and the temperature of the mine. For example, during tests with an external ambient temperature above 70°F and a humidity that reached 90 %RH, providing 55°F dew point air was able to keep the internal apparent temperature below the mandated 95°F. Results for each test case are presented. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines since 2008 [1]. MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force recommended an apparent temperature limit of 95°F for RAs [2]. In 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 95°F inside an occupied RA [3]. The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity [4]. To determine if their RAs meet the apparent temperature limit, RA manufacturers have been performing 96-hour-long heat and humidity tests in laboratories. During these tests, a heat input of 117 W (400 BTU/hr) per person is used to represent the metabolic heat of a single miner [2]. The heat generated by the RA’s carbon dioxide system is also accounted for in testing. To account for this heat, 50 W (170 BTU/hr) of heat per miner is used for a lithium hydroxide scrubbing system, or 30 W (100 BTU/hr) of heat per miner is used for a soda lime scrubbing system [5]. In these tests, air velocities around the RA are minimized to represent the worst-case scenario of an interruption in mine ventilation that might occur in a mine disaster."

"The Chuktukon niobium-rare earth elements ore deposit is located in Siberia (Russia). Weathered carbonatite crusts are the basis of the ore deposit. The deposit itself is 3.5 km in length, about 800 to 1400 m in width and up to 200–300 m in thickness. The ores are composed of iron-manganese oxides (hydrogoethite, hematite, psilomelane, pyrolusite) and contain 3–7% of rare-earth phosphates (florencite, monazite) and 0.5–1% of niobium oxide (pyrochlore). The ore is completely finely dispersed and consists of oxide particles formed of compact, dense aggregates which makes ore dressing as well as leaching of the rare and radioactive elements very difficult. Several options for processing of these ores have been considered: 1) reduction of the iron oxides to magnetite followed by beneficiation with magnetic separation to produce a rare metal concentrate; 2) processing of the rare earth elements (REE) containing minerals by direct alkaline-acid treatment; 3) processing of the ores using nitric acid leaching in an autoclave.INTRODUCTIONThe Chuktukon niobium-rare earth metal ore deposit is located in Siberia, in the Krasnoyarsk region, 110 km from the Boguchan hydroelectric power station which has recently been commissioned. This mineral raw materials is capable of providing impetus for the modernization of the Russian rare metal industry because of its qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The deposit is located in a region of promising industrial development and is a part of the territoriy where the Russian Federation’s Program “Complex Development of the Lower Angara Region” is currenly being realized. The main program directions are creation and development of industrial activities in sectors such as power, metallurgy, oil and gas, gold, rare-metals, and timber. The program will aid the development of the niobium and rare-metal resources of the Lower Angara and neighbouring regions as well as increase the national production of REE and therefore import substitution (Lapin, 1997; Lomaev & Kuzmin, 2003; Lomaev & Serdyuk, 2011; Serdyuk, Lomaev, & Kontorovich, 2000)."

THERE are many kinds and varieties of earth* that are used for the loam compositions for making the moulds for casting bronze, brass, or other metals. Since this is a very necessary thing, you must try to have the best kind and one that resists the fire well. It must be disposed to receive the metals well, must make a neat casting, and must not shrink or break with cracks on drying or baking. Aside from actual trial, I believe that there is little that can help you, since the clay in itself has no color or [77] visible sign that I know of to show how satisfactory it is. Understand that their colors are no less varied than their natures, for, as you see, one is white, one black, one yellow, and another red. Perhaps none will show by its color that it is good for this work, yet it might also happen that all colors are good. But all that I can say about it is to show you by their effects how the good ones should be in their nature; and so by trial you will choose among those that come into your hands. All earths are either sandy or tufaceous, either argillaceous and lean or pasty with unctuous viscosity. The lean ones make the loam powdery and without toughness and hold together poorly by themselves when they are dry. The unctuous and viscous ones shrink and break. Becoming smaller by shrinking, they often twist the forms and they stick together badly. They swell up again in the fire and produce works that are neither exact-a nor neat. Therefore, the good ones must be those that are neither unctuous nor lean, neither wholly tender nor rough, and with a grain that is fine, without pebbles or shells. When applied to a work they easily dry out without fractures and, when dry, hold their own shape well. Above all they must resist the fire well. These are usually of a yellow or red color, but whatever their color may be, the color does not force me to say that the yellow are really better than the black, and the red than the white or gray. Their quality depends on what trial shows. Thus, to summarize, whenever you have to do this work, you must try to have the best clay that you can, because it is to be the foundation of

A survey of the literature has been made covering the extraction of bismuth from raw materials, its separation from lead, and its subsequent refining. The use of aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused electrolytes in electrolytic refining is reviewed. This literature survey has been prepared preliminary to some proposed investigations concerning the electrometallurgy of bismuth, and, although an effort has been made to cover a majority of the applicable references, a critical review was not attempted and no assertion is made that this manuscript is exhaustive in nature. A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1935 must necessarily be brief. As attention of the state government to the oil and gas industry has never included the collection and compilation of statistics on production, either by producing sands, by counties, by fields, or for the state as a whole, such information as requested in Table 1 of this symposium is impossible to secure for this state. In the absence of production data chief attention must be directed to drilling activity for the year. Information such as can be compiled from various sources, including weekly drilling reports to operating companies and trade journals, is given in the following paragraphs with the realization that the data may not be complete in all its details. Drilling Activity by Fields Drilling activity during 1935 was similar to the preceding year in , that the major operating companies were generally content to drill lease-requirement and offset wells and in that comparatively little effort was made to discover new pools. A compilation of completions recorded in weekly reports to drilling companies and in trade journals show 1022 tests completed for the year in 53 counties of the state. Of this total number, 653 wells were commercial producers and 369 were classed as dry holes. Production was secured in 40 counties from formations ranging in depth to 5700 ft. and ranging in age from Middle Ordovician to upper Pennsyl-vanian. From the standpoint of new production for the year, the most important sands are the Clinton of Silurian age, the Berea of Mississippian age and the Shallow sands of Mississippian above the Berea and of Pennsylvanian age. Trenton Sand Field Production in the field of Trenton sand, which originally included parts of 15 counties in northwestern Ohio, is now on the decline. Seventy-three completions were reported in this field during 1935, of which 33.8 per cent were dry holes. Activity centered in Allen County with 12 completions, two of which were dry holes; in Hardin County with 11 producers; and in Wyandot County with 12 producers and 2 dry holes.

Zinc ferrite ( ZnFe2O4) is a by-product of non-ferrous metal production and is considered a promising source of raw zinc. The most efficient way to extract zinc from its ferrite is via acidic extraction, specifically leaching by hydrochloric acid. A comparative study of synthetic zinc ferrite hydrochloric acid leaching in isopropanol, aqueous, and the mixed solvent was performed. Zinc ferrite was obtained by sintering a zinc and iron (III) oxide mixture. Crushed samples were subjected to leaching in 1 M HCl at 323, 333, and 353 K and pulp density of 1 g/100 mL. The dissolution of zinc and iron into solution in organic media reached 77% at 353 K, while in an aqueous environment this value was 65%. The activation energy of 70.0 kJ/ mol was found for the leaching process in an isopropanol environment, which is lower than that in an aqueous solution by 15%. The more efficient leaching effect of isopropanol is attributed to the lower dielectric constant of the alcohol which increases the affinity of chloride anions for zinc and iron cations at leaching.

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013. W. P. MOULD*—Has consideration been given to the problem of retreating the 4,000,000 ton tailings pile to recover the very considerable amount of asbestos fiber that was lost over the years due to insufficient operation and poor recoveries? Also, what was known about the possible content of chromite and the sulphides of nickel and cobalt? M. J. MESSEL (author's reply)—Consideration was given to the problem but nothing concrete has been done up to this time. W. P. MOULD—I am certain the tail- ings contain a very considerable quantity of fiber, not all of which is in the shortest lengths, because in the milling of talc rock from a neighboring location having a common origin with the asbestos bearing serpentine source of the tailings pile, a concentrate carrying 15 pct Ni and Co in complex sulphides and constituting about 4/10 of 1 pct of the talc rock was recovered. In the belief that the tailings also contained an appreciable content of chromite (then in demand, 1937) it was suggested to the management of the asbestos company that a truck load of the current tailings be sent to the flotation plant of the talc company where it would be put over the concentrating tables in an effort to discover the presence and roughly the percentages of chromite, nickel, and cobalt. Preparations for the test were woefully inadequate and the test was completely snarled up by the surprisingly large quantity of asbestos fiber from 1 in. long down to very short fiber, all of which matted up and plugged launders and pumps with disastrous effects and practically the total loss of the sample. If anything was indicaded by the test, it was that a wet process for milling asbestos was worthy of very serious consideration. M. J. MESSEL—A wet milling process for tailings retreatment only, is at present under study at our plant. One asbestos mining company in Canada has constructed a fairly large test plant for this purpose, but as yet no definite results have been obtained other than in a small test unit plant which were in some respects quite encouraging.

At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.

Base metals and platinum group metals can be collected in metallic alloy form, via a wide variety of smelting processes. The recovery, or degree of collection, of the valuable metals is a function of the extent of reduction in the furnace, which, in turn, is indicated by the fraction of iron present in the feed materials that report to the alloy. An equation has been developed that relates the recovery of various metals (such as Ni, Co, Cr, and PGMs) to the recovery of Fe. This recovery equation (for each metal) is characterized by a single parameter (K?) that can either be empirically fitted to the data, or expressed in terms of the equilibrium constant and the ratios of the activity coefficients involved. Data from a number of varied DC arc furnace campaigns are presented to illustrate this behaviour.

This paper describes various mitigation methods in order to reduce the maximum acceleration of the floorboard of hulled vehicles when explosive charges buried in water saturated sand were detonated beneath them. The effects on floorboard acceleration of adding a vehicle hull, several types of floorboard bracing, the use of foam to fill the gap between the floorboard and hull, and the use of foam to isolate the floorboard from the hull have been investigated. Small scale testing was conducted, which used bar magnet velocity gages to measure the velocity as a function of time of the center of the floorboard, directly over the charge, where the acceleration was expected to be greatest.

Selection of resistance factors within Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) requires accurate assessment of uncertainty and bias in load and resistance. To date, many studies have focused predominantly on the assessment of uncertainty, while the potential for bias appears to be the dominant factor in design for consistent levels of reliability under a variety of situations. Bias comes from factors which have been ignored in design method development but significantly influence resistance when extrapolating from conditions typical of databases to those at a given site. Uncertainty and bias can be quantified as the coefficient of variation and mean (or median) of a data set, respectively, for statistical assessment of load and resistance factors. This paper first presents an overview of statistical assessment of resistance factors, and then discusses factors that influence uncertainty and bias when extrapolating to situations outside of conventional databases of driven pile axial capacity.
