Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

ERP systems have been widely implemented nowadays in several industries. However, ERP was originally designed to fit former MRP and MRP II users, and most of the ERP research has been focused on discrete manufacturing . On the other hand, process industries ? and mining in particular ? present many peculiar characteristics, which are difficult to comply with ERP systems standard functionalities. Again, very limited research has been developed covering enterprise management systems in mining. The objective of this paper is to identify, through an explanatory study that includes a case study methodology, how ERP systems manage the functional areas of the mining industry, and how they fit into the mineral value chain IT requirements. A secondary objective is to identify the gaps between ERP?s functional capabilities and the mining industry business requirements, and to point out the perceived benefits they generate to the companies.

"In recent years, significant strides have been made to optimize the design of filtration and pressurization systems used on enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust and other contaminants and provide the best air quality to the equipment operators. This synergetic effort has involved original equipment manufacturers building mining equipment, manufacturers of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for mobile equipment, filtration and pressurization system manufacturing companies, as well as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and other government organizations. Considering all the advances made in this area over the last decade, one aspect that NIOSH still needs to assess is the longevity of optimal cab performance with respect to the quality (filtering efficiency) of the filters used in filtration and pressurization systems. In today’s culture, most health and safety professionals automatically believe that HEPA quality filters need to be used to provide the greatest level of protection to workers. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for NIOSH hypothesized that HEPA quality filters may not be optimal for the mining industry and speculated that MERV 16 rated filters would be more appropriate in most cases. In order to test this hypothesis, NIOSH performed a two-year study comparing both HEPA and MERV 16 quality filters on two pieces of underground limestone mining equipment, being a roof-bolter and face drill machine. Testing showed at the 95 pct. confidence level that there was no statistical difference between the two efficiency filters on both pieces of mining equipment. Since the MERV 16 rated filters were less restrictive and provided greater cab pressure, and since they did not have to be replaced as often as the HEPA quality filters, researchers concluded the MERV 16 filters were the optimal choice for both pieces of mining equipment in this case study comparative analysis. INTRODUCTION When most health and safety professionals today think about filtration efficiencies and their correlation with protecting workers’ health, the normal assumption is the higher the efficiency of a filter, the greater the protection afforded to the workers. The next logical step is to believe that HEPA filters deliver the greatest protection for workers because they provide the highest filtering efficiency. Obviously high-efficiency intake filters are a necessity for an effective cab filtration and pressurization system on mobile mining equipment, but what is the optimal filter efficiency rating for achieving high levels of cab protection factor performance over the service life of filters? To address this question, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed an in-depth laboratory research study over the years simultaneously with numerous field studies to retrofit used enclosed cabs on mobile mining equipment with newer and more effective filtration and pressurization systems."

The techniques for the growth and controlled, graded doping of silicon epitaxial overgrowth layers were established. Grading of- impurities such as arsenic or boron in arbitrarily chosen profiles oiler four orders of magnitude (from I X 10Lg to 1 X 10L5 cm) was accomplished. The graded structures were grown in a stepwise manner where in the profiles were approximated by growing many separate layers with small doping-level changes between layers. Masked-area growth of silicon through windows in a SiO2 masking film was acconiplished through the simultaneous injection of HCl gas 102th Sic14 in the epitaxial reactor. The HCl served to inhihit the growth of silicon on the Sz02 surface, and also to control the cross-sectional profile of the silicon mesas. silicon from the substrate was etched out through the windows, and then epitaxial material was used to fill the holes hack in to form planar diodes. Arsenic-huried regions beneath in te- In recent months, the epitaxial growth process in semiconductor materials technology has evolved into a complex system directed at both material improvement for better monolithic integrated-circuit characteristics and the development of new silicon structures for future integrated-circuit needs. The advent of high-temperature HC1 gas etching1 grated-circuit transistors reduced V(SAT) by slightly more than one third, bringing this parame-ter to that of an isolated component transistor. When arsenic was diffused into the starting sub-stvate, it was necessary to remove any excess arsenic in order to avoid excessive audodoping of the subsequent epitaxial layer. Oxide isolation of single-crystal regions in a substrate provided complete electrical isolation of integrated-circuit components, thereby eliminating parasitic capacitance which is inherent in standard integrated-circuit processing. The process involved the etching of deep mesas on silicon Wafers, the formation of an oxide over the mesa surface, and then the deposition of several mils of polycrystalline silicon over the oxide. The original substrate was lapped and polished allay until the mesas were left isolated in the polycrys-talline matrix. The Final components were fabri-cated in the single-crystal islands. In the past fifteen to twenty years, the use of drilled piers to support high capacities in coastal plain deposits has become more and more common. With improved construction techniques and better understanding of pier behavior, drilled shafts with capacities of 200 to 500 tons are not unusual. The purpose of this presentation is to review several drilled pier installations from North Carolina to north-east Florida as a means of illustrating the different types of design concepts and installation techniques which are presently being used. Phosphate deposits in Montana , Idaho , Wyoming , and Utah are important factors in the mineral , agricultural , and industrial economy in the western part of the Nation . This report presents background information , including geology , mining , beneficiation , processing , resources , and economics , assembled to provide a comprehensive introduction to a series of four area reports . About 20 percent of the Nation's phosphate is produced from the Western field where there were 6 surface and 9 underground mines in operation in 1963 . This region also has an estimated 58 percent of the Nation's phosphate reserves , and continuing development is assured by these abundant resources and an increasing demand for phosphate products . Long range forecasts indicate that the United States will continue to use increasing amounts of both agricultural and industrial phosphate products . Beneficiation has become an important part of the phosphate processing industry , and two flotation plants and several washing plants were in operation in 1963. Recent studies by the Bureau of Mines Metallurgy Research Center , Albany , Oreg . , have been directed toward developing flotation processes applicable to treatment of marginal phosphate rock . Other Bureau of Mines research is being directed toward improved methods of ore recovery , ground control , and mining .

"Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading minerals and coal fines. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Further, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically, forcing companies to discard part of the ultrafine materials to impoundments. To overcome these problems, a new method of separating and simultaneously dewatering ultrafine particles has been developed. Following extensive laboratory-scale test work, the process, known as hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation (HHS), has been tested successfully in continuous operations at proof-of-concept (POC)- and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the HHS process is capable of producing high quality clean coal with high recoveries and low moistures. INTRODUCTION Coal preparation plants are designed with up to four parallel processing circuits for treating coarse (> 12 mm), intermediate (12x1 mm) small (1x0.15 mm), and fine (<0.15 mm) particles. The plus 0.15 mm fractions can be effectively cleaned efficiently with gravity separation methods (Wills, 2006). At present, the only commercially viable option for cleaning the finest fraction is froth flotation (Yoon et al., 1999). In flotation, air is dispersed in the form of small air bubbles in a tank in which coal fines are suspended. The small air bubbles selectively collect the hydrophobic coal particles and float to the surface, forming a froth phase which overflows into a launder. As is well known, ultrafine coal particles of less than 30-50 µm are difficult to be collected by the air bubbles, resulting in low recoveries. Furthermore, fine particle flotation suffers from low carrying capacities and poor selectivity due to entrainment problems. (Bethell et al., 2005; Luttrell et al., 2014). In addition, the froth products containing ultrafine coal are difficult to dewater. Mechanical dewatering in general becomes inefficient with decreasing particle size due to small cake porosity and high surface area, resulting in high moistures (Hucko et al., 1988). The cost often becomes prohibitive with particles of smaller than ~45 µm (Bethell et al., 2005). Moreover, the high-moisture products are difficult to handle and incur high shipping costs and lower thermal efficiencies (Honaker et al., 2013)"

This volume was prepared in support of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation under a Bureau of Mines contract. The evaluation is described in part within a companion volume entitled Benefit-Cost Analysis. The economic mine models outlined herein provide a quantitative basis for the assessment of program benefits. Reference is made to estimated oil shale mine costs to delineate the beneficial impacts that can be expected to accrue for the future implementation of program developed technology. Estimated mine cost data are provided for surface, underground, and modified in situ oil shale mining operations.

This paper describes Mohave Mining and Milling Co. methods of mining and milling manganese ore in Arizona. It is one of a series of publications prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs in various mining districts in the United States. Production of manganese ore, as such, in Arizona began in 1915. Before this time manganiferous ores had been mined primarily for silver content and used as a smelter flux. From 1916 to 1918 approximately 69,000 long tons of manganese and mangsniferous ores were mined. After World War I production dropped to almost nothing until World War II, during which period more than 24,000 long tons were produced. A lull in mangonese mining occurred after World War II, having production rates of only a few hundred tons annually through 1952.

NOTHING in this paper is to be understood as even suggesting a moment&apos;s suspension of the splendid work now going forward on the Isthmus of Panama, except so far as it is related to the proposed locks. All the work already done, and all material purchased or ordered, would be available for the plan herein proposed. The situation and the problem concerned may be summarized as. follows : The scheme of a lock-canal through the Isthmus of Panama was adopted, as is well known, on two principal grounds-namely, the greater expense of a sea-level canal, and the longer time required for its construction. Of these, the latter is believed to have been the more influential. But further developments have diminished the weight of both, so that a reconsideration of the question is warranted. It is the purpose of this paper to advocate such a reconsideration-emphasizing the importance of certain objections to the lock-canal not mentioned or not duly appreciated in the report of those members of the International Board of Consulting Engineers who favored this form; showing the nature and bearing of the new facts developed; and, finally, proposing a combination of well-known methods and apparatus, which would, in my judgment, effect the construction of a sea-level canal in less time, and perhaps at no greater cost, than will be required for the remaining work on the lock-canal. In spite of distractions from glam-our areas (ground control, computers, etc.), excavating and bulk handling in mining remains paramount but is now undergoing dramatic advances. The massive intervention of mining and civil engineers as "engineer-users" into the tight, exclusive, and specialized bond between the equipment operator ("operator-users") and the manufacturer (mechanical engineers "and sales "reps") has now occurred. Three developments have accelerated this: 1) larger, more costly, complex, specialized, and innovative equipment; 2) a more profound understanding of the equipment, operations, and working conditions (encumbered space); and 3) a concurrent thrust into "high-tech," (automatic and remote controls, sensors, automation, artificial intelligence, and even robotics) and human factors (workload intensity, work-station design). This has produced a well-defined professional discipline, including construction and even military engineering. The mine plant, and to a lesser extent, the mine face, is now being monitored. Equipment conferences, journals, and centers at universities and agencies have multi-plied. The discipline&apos;s impact on future mining now becomes more apparent.

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

Sulfate-impacted mine waters are under regulatory scrutiny to reduce total dissolved solids (TDS). There are several options to reduce TDS. One option is transforming the soluble sulfate into insoluble ettringite. The Water Company LLC (TWC) patented a process for sulfate removal through ettringite formation by reacting directly with metallic aluminum. Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) and TWC have collaborated to design, build and operate a 10-gallon-per-minute (gpm) ettringite pilot plant to establish reagent consumption, plant availability and full-scale design criteria. Using metallic aluminum as the primary aluminum source for ettringite precipitation eliminates the addition of other ions, resulting in significant demineralization. The pilot plant achieved greater than 98% water recovery, greater than 90% reagent efficiencies and maintained reactor sulfate levels below 250ppm. The SAVMIN process, piloted in South Africa, is one method to produce ettringite. In this process, aluminum hydroxide is the aluminum source. The Cost Effective Sulfate Removal (CESR) process is similar to SAVMIN, but uses a proprietary aluminum source instead of aluminum hydroxide. Outotec and Veolia also have their own versions of the process using their specialized process equipment. TWC patented a version of ettringite precipitation using metallic aluminum as the aluminum source for ettringite formation. The benefit of using aluminum metal is that no additional ions are added to the process. At high pH, the raw aluminum corrodes in water causing hydrogen gas generation as the water is chemically reduced. This reaction is shown below:

Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project&apos;s development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the &apos;company&apos;. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

THE fact that this latest and most modern of the Universal Atlas Cement Company&apos;s plants at Northampton, Pa., is the fifth to be built on these same properties, and their development has been coincidental with the development of the portland cement industry in the United States, makes it appropriate to sketch briefly the history of the successive steps. In 1889 the original Atlas Portland Cement Co. started its first plant at Coplay, Pa., which is just across the Lehigh River from the present operation. Here the first successful rotary kiln was operated. These kilns were 6 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. long; they used oil for fuel until 1895, when the company developed the first burner for pulverized coal. Shortly thereafter the Atlas company acquired property on the Northampton side of the river and built its plants Nos. 2, 3 and 4 within the following 10 years. During the same period the production of portland cement in the country was increasing rapidly; owing largely to the development of the rotary kiln and improved grinding machinery, which lowered the cost and improved the quality of cement. The general tendency has been to increase the length of the kiln and grind both raw material and finished product finer. In 1930 the Atlas Portland Cement Co. and the Universal Portland Cement Co. united to form the Universal Atlas Cement Co., and the same policy of improving the product has been continued. Because of the large amount of research carried on by manufacturers and consumers, including government agencies, there is a demand for cement of different chemical and physical characteristics for different kinds of structures. Hence many engineers in recent years have been asking for cements of certain definite chemical analyses, which they think are best for their particular jobs. This has compelled the manufacturer to make several different types of cement by variations of chemical composition. These are generally made by adding silica, iron and lime to the standard mixture, which necessarily increases the cost of the product. Therefore the Universal Atlas Cement Co., in planning the modernization of its Northampton plant, gave this particular phase of the problem considerable study. Research and experimentation have developed the practicability of making a wide variety of differently proportioned raw materials for cement by a process of subtraction rather than by addition. With such process, it is possible to discard the undesirable aluminates and silicates from the ample supply of impure limestone available from the company&apos;s property rather than by adding high-grade limestone obtained from distant sources. This procedure requires mineral separation by centrifugal sedimentation and froth flotation. Underground Bulk Systems (UBS) technology has gained widespread application in tunneling and underground mining owing to its safety, reliability, increased Velocity of Detonation (VOD) and excellent results. However, its application in perimeter blasting is still limited and researchers are looking at ways of harnessing this technology for perimeter control. This simplifies the charging process by using one cost efficient product for charging both the perimeter and grid holes. This paper presents a case study on the application of underground bulk emulsion explosives for perimeter control blasting in underground room and pillar platinum mines. In order to achieve the required coupling ratios in the perimeter holes, the emulsion is loaded into specially formulated smaller diameter polyethylene (poly) pipes. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated using information obtained during routine blast audits and data supplied by the mines on half cast factors, over break and under break as well as analysis of data from Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scans over a period of four years. This method of perimeter control, has given the platinum miners in Zimbabwe a competitive edge in cost effective perimeter charging and blasting by simplifying the previously costly deployment of traditional barrels and other decoupled cartridges. The method has been adopted by all the platinum mines in Zimbabwe as it has proven to be a cost effective alternative of controlling the perimeter walls, along with other key benefits that relate to safety, productivity and effectiveness.

From the initial planning phases to the closing of a mine, mining is an industry where high attention, care, and sensitivity are needed in every step of the mine life. Since mining projects have a long-life span, exceeding a decade sometimes, managing a whole mine project is challenging, especially when challenges faced due to generational differences are considered, such as tracking and logging data, or the usage of different engineering solutions change over time. Along with the overall hardship caused by the time put into a mining project, the present-time operations are very costly where each minute counts. In present-time operations, every decision made, and every minute used during planning and operations has an impact on the efficiency, safety, and economics of the project. Having extremely harsh conditions in both the excavation and mineral processing operations not only slows down the processes but creates very dangerous environments that need to be handled with precise safety measurements. To support the already established processes, we could implement new technologies and use them to our advantage. Virtual reality (VR) is one of these technologies that we could implement in the mining industry. VR is a technology that emerged in the 1960s creating virtual environments and platforms. The user experiences these virtual environments from head- mounted headsets to rooms with 360 screens, all with different levels of immersion. These higher levels of immersion, create a higher level of presencemaking the users more engaged in the activity they are trying to accomplish. These two factors of immersion and presence are what make VR unique and beneficial. VR has some applications and case studies in the industry along with some research being conducted in universities. Unfortunately, there has not been a comprehensive literature review or analysis regarding only VR and its implementations for the mining industry in the last 5 years. This paper aims to describe what VR is and its relation to the mining industry, in the most recent years. The paper first gives a brief background on what VR is and its key concepts. Secondly, it will give information on how the initial stages of the literature review were conducted and the findings along with discussions. The paper will finish with the conclusion drawn from the discussion and potential future work.
