Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world class, polymetallic deposit that started production in 2010 and is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

This report covers the period from June 17, 1974 to February 20, 1975, and describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of Contract No. H0346102 and Modification No. 1 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to design protective canopies for an Elkhorn Scoop, a Lee Norse Miner, a Wilcox Miner and a Wilcox Bolter; to construct mockups of the canopies; and to obtain machine operator evaluations of the canopy designs by assessing the mockups while installed on their machines in the mines. The overall program objective was to achieve protective canopy designs for the four machines which would be acceptable to the operators.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by: (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war material; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this Critical fuel situation, an investigation was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

The physical and mechanical properties of coal play a important role in the planing and design of coal mines. However, due to the complexity conditions in situ and the influence of unknown factors, it is hard for people to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal directly. In this research, uniaxial compressive stress was used to change the attribute of coal samples, and the ultrasonic measure technique was used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal. The results of laboratory test showed that there was a strong relation between uniaxial stress and velocity of ultrasonic wave. Sensitivity analysis with numerical simulation was used to define the relation between the physical-mechanical parameters of coal and ultrasonoc wave. With the dynamic analysis module of FLAC, three elastic and plastic models were built to model the coal samples. The modeling parameters were changed pro rata, and the correlation of coal and ultrasonic wave properties were summarized and presented. The result from this research will be base for further analysis of caving behavior of coal.

"The year 2011 witnessed a major surge in rare earth prices as China, supplier of +95% of the world’s rare earths, reduced export quotas and increased export taxes and duties. In response, companies around the world are scrambling for alternative sources. In Canada too, there is a race to be the “first” rare earth producer. Something that is not generally realized is that Canada has a long history of rare earth production and was a major supplier from the early 1960’s to 1990. At one stage, Canada was said to be supplying more than one third of the world’s yttrium and probably supplied even more than that. Five decades ago, thorium was a key element in many non-nuclear applications and Canada became a major supplier of thorium from the late 1950’s to 1968, first as a by-product of uranium and then as a co-product of rare earths. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s original rare earth and thorium production facilities, which were located in the Elliot Lake uranium camp in Northern Ontario. The uses of these elements, geology, mineralogy, markets of the time, and processing are all discussed. Some of the lessons learned from these pioneering operations might be useful in today’s race to develop the next generation of rare earth production plants.INTRODUCTION The rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960’s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray tube in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths. The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950’s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950’s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths. Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available for thorium and the rare earths but unquestionably Elliot Lake production made a significant contribution to world production. This paper is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

Environmental conflict management approaches and procedures have been used to successfully address and resolve a variety of issues, problems, and conflicts related to the extraction of natural resources. Companies in the mining industry have been involved in a range of controversies over planning, siting, permitting, environmental, and enforcement issues. Through the use of conflict resolution case studies, this paper will present approaches and procedures that can help companies and other involved parties to successfully manage and resolve differences in a mutually acceptable manner.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a graphics-based computer model to assess operator visibility for continuous miners, shuttle cars, and scoops. Using digitized drawings of the machine, the program can analyze visibility for both 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male operators. This model was used to predict 95th percentile male operator visibility for two shuttle car designs. These results were then compared to those obtained from a manual assessment of visibility using the actual shuttle cars. The methods showed good correlation except for several cases which were attributed to imprecise digitization of the machines.

Confidence in the strength of the U.S. economic recovery was considerably enhanced by third quarter 1983 profits, which showed a 12.8-percent increase over those in the second quarter (table I). Although the increases were not as great as between the first and second quarter of 1983, profits have grown each quarter since fourth quarter 1982. Both total profits and profits per unit of output increased, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributes to decreases in labor and nonlabor costs (per unit of output), as well as to moderate price increases. [ ] A number of durable goods sectors, however, continue to show profit declines, especially electrical and non-electrical machinery. Profits in the primary metal industry are still negative, but the economic picture of this industry is improving. Between the second and third quarters of 1983, capacity utilization increased somewhat in primary metal manufacturing and stone and earth mineral mining but did not change at all in metal mining. Capacity utilization in metal materials increased from 47.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 1982 to 64.2 percent in the third quarter of 1983 (table 2).

U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. Este trabalho descreve o funcionamento do sistema automático desenvolvido para realizar o posicionamento de vagões durante a troca de rodeiros, que opera no Centro de Troca de Rodeiros – CTR, localizado nas instalações da empresa Vale em São Luís do Maranhão. O posicionamento de composições com até 110 vagões e com precisão de centímetros, resguardando a folgas entre vagões, é um desafio na rotina de manutenção. Para superar esse desafio foi desenvolvido um sistema automático para posicionar as composições de vagões, que utiliza medição baseada em tecnologia laser, com precisão de centímetros, e que atualiza continuamente a distância entre um rodeiro e o ponto correto de parada, possibilitando assim o posicionamento de rodeiros.

IN the mechanical twinning of magnesium on the {1012} planes the crystallographic deformation is such that, in the direction of the hexagonal axis [0001], twinning is possible only under tension stress, while in the directions perpendicular to the hexagonal axis, twinning is possible only under applied compression. Thus in extruded magnesium and magnesium alloys where the extruded textures are best described as either [1010] or [ 1120] fibers,1 the basal planes are all nearly parallel to the extrusion axis and such material is susceptible to {1012 } twinning by compression in the direction of the extrusion axis. In order to explain the results of cyclic stressing in alternate tension and compression upon the tangent elastic modulus in such material, Dorn and Thomsen2 have postulated that, following twinning under applied compression, a retwinning or untwinning occurs as a result of residual microtensile stresses immediately upon removal of the applied compressive force. Recently, Carapella and Shaw3,4 have used this supposition of untwinning in magnesium in discussing their results on indentation hardness and on cold drawing of MI sheet. In trying to confirm this hypothesis by suitable direct experiments, the authors have been unsuccessful in detecting any evidence whatsoever that untwinning follows the release of applied compression and are forced to conclude that this hypothesis is improbable or, at least, that the quantity of material involved is small. For the experiments, small cylindrical specimens 0.040-in. diam. X 0.120- to 0.140-in. long were etched from 0.0625-in. extruded rod. The ends of the specimens were accurately faced off parallel in a jeweler's lathe. The compression jig was simply an ordinary set of micrometer calipers with an anvil interposed between the spindle and the specimen. The anvil was free to move axially but restrained from rotating so that the rotation of the spindle would not introduce a twisting stress on the specimen. With this arrangement the compressive strains could be estimated to 0.0001 in. and X ray pinhole photographs could be taken with or without load as required. Fig 1 is the pattern of an uncompressed specimen of AZ31 alloy, showing the approximate [1010] extrusion fiber. The X ray beam is normal to the extrusion axis; in this position it is particularly sensitive in detecting twinning if one directs his attention to the diffraction ring from the basal plane. Since twinning on {1012} planes produced an 86° reorientation of the crystal lattice, the original basal reflections occur at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions while the (0002) reflections from any twinned material will occur at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. Fig 2 shows the same specimen compressed 3.0 pct, photographed while still under load. This strain has been just enough to produce a detectible amount of twinning and the sensitivity is roughly indicated by the fact that no alterations were produced in the intensities or maxima of the other diffraction rings. REPORTS received from operating companies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, indicated marked progress in the reduction of injuries to employees in the coking industry in 1951 as compared with 1950. The fatality rate (0.14) per million man-hours of exposure declined 33 percent and was the second best performance since statistics on the industry were first collected in 1916. The nonfatal-injury rate (10.94), the best since 1940, declined 8 percent and was bettered only in 8 of the past 36 years. The nonfatal rate is based on all injuries resulting in loss of time for more than the remainder of the day on which the injury occurred. The exposure to hazard, as represented by the number of man-hours of work time during the year, was 7 percent higher than in 1950 and, except for the year 1943, was the highest since 1920. The fatality rate for men employed at beehive-coke ovens decreased 16 percent and the nonfatal-injury rate 23 percent, while the man-hours of work time or exposure increased slightly over 16 percent. The fatality and nonfatal-injury rates at byproduct ovens declined 33 and 2 ½ percent, respectively, while the number of man-hours worked increased 6 percent.

The subject of mine fires is a very wide one. To give reasonable coherency, the paper concentrates on the behaviour of fires in the ventilated airways of mines; spontaneous combustions are not considered. The following topics are considered in some detail: 1) Material selection: Performance requirements for mining materials in terms of flammability and smoke/fume production; methods of test and need for relevance to mining conditions. 2) Fire growth: The influence of material properties and method of use on the rate of growth of fire in a mine roadway; the influence of ventilation, slope, material orientation, proximity of walls and roof on fire behaviour. 3) The fire in the ventilation network: The influence of fire on the ventilation distribution; the circulation of fire products in the network. The influences of these topics in determining fire control strategy are then considered but topics such as fire detection and fire extinction methods are not reviewed in detail. An extensive Bibliography on papers relating to mine fires is included.

The Iron Mountain, situated three-quarters of a mile NE. of the limits of the City of Durango, rises abruptly from a level plain, and trends N. 83' E. Fig. 1 gives a view of the mountain, with the company's iron-works. There are indications that the vein or deposit of iron-ore extends also about two leagues across the Murca ranch, in the same general direction. The Iron Mountain proper is divided into two great lenses by a horse of cantera or eruptive rock, some hundreds of feet in width.
