Isto pode ocorrer através de diversas formas, tendo como as principais, o ganho de rendimento, o aumento de produtividade, a redução do homem hora aplicado e a redução do custo de matéria prima. Objetivando reduzir o custo de produção integrado placa bobina, a ArcelorMittal Tubarão busca aumentar o percentual de placas enviadas diretamente do Lingotamento Contínuo de Placas para o Laminador de Tiras a Quente. Os ganhos se dão, em primeiro plano, através da redução da intervenção nas placas aumentando o rendimento de placa e exigindo menos mão de obra para o corte e escarfagem de placa e, em segundo plano, através do aumento da temperatura média de enfornamento, propiciando maior produtividade no laminador de tiras a quente e menor consumo de energia para realizar o pré-aquecimento da placa antes do processo de laminação. Somado a isto, a maior disponibilidade de placas no pátio do LTQ, aumenta a chance de laminação exigindo menos paradas do LTQ e aumentando a produção. Os ganhos estimados com o projeto, apenas no que diz respeito a redução de custo de condicionamento são de 6MUSD/ano.

A test series of small, precisely-controlled and thoroughly-monitored production blasts was conducted at two quarries. In each series, all variables except delay were kept constant, as much as practically possible. The first aim of the study was to determine the effect of local geology on ground vibration. The second aim was to test several hypotheses relating the effect of millisecond delay intervals to fragmentation and ground vibration. A resonant frequency of ground vibration was shown to be related to the thickness of the overburden, in accord with a model proposed by Gupta (1961). Since the overburden geology creating this resonant vibration cannot usually be changed, two methods were tested to choose delays such that blast vibrations would destructively interfere. These were shown to be effective in modifying both the peak particle velocity and response spectra of ground vibration. The delay interval chosen also affects fragmentation, primarily in massive rock, with an optimum relief between holes of 2 ms/ft. Strain gage records indicate a possible mechanism consistent with this information.

This case history really started during the tail end of WWII when two Navy men, both Colorado School of Mines graduates, got together in Washington, DC, while they were assigned to the Office of Navy Petroleum Reserves doing some of the first aerial magnetometer work ever done on a practical oil exploration basis over the offshore area of the Gulf Coast. When separated from Naval Service active duty in 1946, the two men, Walter E. Heinrichs, Jr., and Robert E. Thurmond, tried, unsuccessfully, to form a commercial air magnetometer business. Later they got together again in Jerome, AZ, with Newmont Mining's early geophysical exploration endeavors from 1947 to 1949. Subsequent to the Newmont experience, they jointly proposed a specific mining geophysical exploration and development program to Herbert Hoover, Jr., then president of United Geophysical Co. of Pasadena, CA. Mr. Hoover, in consultation with his father Herbert Hoover and others of his staff at United, particularly Edwin G. Schempf, executive vice president, and Raymond A. Peterson, vice president of research, agreed to establish the proposed program under United's auspices, to be headquartered at Tucson, AZ. The primary objective would be to practically test and develop various mining geophysical methods and techniques while exploring particularly for base metals in the general area of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico.

A collaborative tool was developed to help all partners involved in the environmental administration. This tool focuses on the interaction among residue generators in the productive chain. It was developed for a vehicle assembler company supported by entities or institutions with emphasis in the research, development and innovation, with expertise and capacity for new products creation, as well as reuse, recycling and reduction of by-products generation. The work aims to establish a tool for socio-environmental management, focusing on promotion and interaction between industrial waste generators sectors.

Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk. The Bureau of nines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Southwest, is conducting an investigating to ascertain the safest and most economical explosives to use in metal mines, and to ascertain the best methods of blasting under various conditions. A part of this investigation has been a study of drilling and blasting drift rounds in metal mines. This paper covers one phase of work on drift rounds and discusses the methods of loading the individual holes of the rounds. The blasting tests, on which this paper is based, were made at the Copper queen Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Bisbee, Arizona.

The workshop on "Cyanide Effluents from Mineral Processing' was held on February 2-3, 1982, at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop was sponsored by the minerals industry, supporting industries, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Utah Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute, College of Mines, University of Utah Prior to the workshop, a Working Paper was prepared and delivered to the participants. This paper was used as a guide during panel discussions and forms the basis for this proceedings document. The workshop focused on use of cyanide as it relates to the gold and silver mining industry and the froth flotation processes employed by mineral mining companies. Its intent was to discuss "state of the art" technology and provide information pertinent to cyanide use in the minerals industry. No attempt was made to advocate regulatory limits or set policy governing the use of cyanide. The principal topics of discussion included- (1) the chemistry and use of cyanides; (2) control and treatment of cyanide mining wastes; (3) toxicity of mining wastes; (4) fate of cyanide in the environment; and (5) the analytical chemistry of cyanide.

The disadvantages of the present zinc producing methods, RLE and ISP, are high energy consumption and environmental problems. Therefore, efforts have been directed in Outokumpu Zinc towards the development of alternate routes. One interesting pyrometallurgical process to produce zinc is to inject zinc calcine together with a solid reductant into molten iron, saturated with carbon. This process has been studied by thermodynamic calculations, laboratory tests and mini-pilot test runs at Outokumpu Research Oy, Pori, Finland. The results of these tests are presented and discussed in this paper. The mini-pilot tests demonstrated that over 97 per cent evaporation of the zinc was possible using a reactive coal dust as the reducing agent. The recovery of zinc in the metal phase was at best 88 per cent of input zinc, but only part reported in molten lead in the splash condenser. The final metallic zinc contained at best 98 per cent Zn, the main impurities being dissolved lead and coal carried along with the flue dusts.

The Barrick Mercur Gold Mine lies in the Oquirrh Mountains of northern Utah. Limestone, sandstone, shale, and chert are the predominant rock types being mined. Recent expansion has encountered rhyolite. Lithology and structural attitudes control most mechanical behavior. Slope steepening, mine planning, and site selection are presented as means by which geological engineering has contributed to the economics of the operation. Geomechanics investments of approximately $700,000 have resulted in cost savings or additional production worth over $16,000,000.

The FAB acts as a contact- and coordination site for international business partners, organizations and governmental authorities. Together with the federal government the FAB organizes bilateral working group meetings in the commodity and mining sector. Project enquiries are being distributed from the FAB among their member companies."

During the past 6 years the Mining Division of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared many information circulars containing valuable technical data covering the operating details of mining and ore-dressing plants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. These papers, written for the most part by operating officials in the field, have been designed to comprise a reference library for the operating engineer. In order to make the information contained in these publications more readily available to the busy engineer the enclosed series of reference tables has been compiled. The tabular arrangement is by subject rather than alphabetical order, thus avoiding the bulk of an alphabetical index.

"Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. opened Canada’s first diamond mine, the EKATI Diamond Mine (EKATI) in the Northwest Territories on October 14, 1998. Four short years later, on November 29, 2002, saw the opening of North America’s first underground diamond mine, the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit, which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in Arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today.Underground mining represents a key component of the long-term business plan for EKATI. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high-value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at EKATI. Koala North is designed and approved as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the development, the Koala North mine is well into its production ramp-up phase and currently producing at around 1,200 t/day from the first two production levels."

El presente trabajo señala la importancia de SIMSA como elemento integrador de las funciones de diversas áreas (los trabajadores y los responsables operativos) en el sector minero. En este sentido, la mina San Vicente ha optado por una función más activa en el control de eficiencias de consumos de materiales, costos, presupuesto y apoyo en sistemas. Como consecuencia de esto, la mina ha mejorado la recuperación del yacimiento a un 80% y reducido la dilución a 30% en condiciones geológicas difíciles. Así también se ha mejorado las técnicas de perforación y sostenimiento y se ha generado un clima laboral ameno entre el empresario minero y sus trabajadores.

"Contrary to the way it is often portrayed, the average organization or company is far from being a cold, calculating machine. It is actually a highly emotive place where interaction with people is a fundamental part of its ability to perform satisfactorily.The company, through its employers, expects employees, including new graduates, to have the ability to cope adequately with this emotive environment. The graduate is frequently unable to meet this expectation because he/she has not been developed to do so. Technical knowledge is his only asset. This deficiency manifests itself in leadership shortcomings, both intrapersonal and interpersonal. Further analysis reveals a deficiency in three elements of leadership - self-awareness, oral communication, and an ability to work cooperatively in teams.To address these three elements of leadership, Sasol Coal, a subsidiary of the big petrochemical company in South Africa, sponsored a leadership programme at the University of Pretoria for their final-year bursary students in the faculty of Engineering. This programme, the Sasol Engineering and Leadership Academy (SELA), consisted of a number of interventions designed to address the three areas of self-awareness, oral communication, and cooperative behaviour in teams. These interventions varied from an intrapersonal nature to interpersonal aspects. Psychometric assessments were followed by experiential modules dealing with the three constructs.SELA was evaluated at the end of the year. The results showed a positive shift in the main constructs of self-awareness, communications, and cooperation. This was measured quantitatively and qualitatively. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for improving the programme were proposed."

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. Fly ash and zeolite have strong absorption to cations since their porous microstructure. The porosities of fly ash and zeolite can also be increased by modification, which improves the absorption of the materials. This research showed that the effects of modified fly ash and zeolite to remove ammonia nitrogen from rainwater. The optimal reaction time, additive amount of materials, and pH value of the stormwater to remove ammonia nitrogen were experimentally determined. For modified fly ash, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen from 100 ml stormwater was 74.41% with the addition of 10.0g fly ash, 1.5 hours of the reaction time, and 8 of pH value. To the modified zeolite, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 51.22% at the reaction conditions of 2.0g of zeolite, 1 hour of reaction time, and 7 of pH value.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze detailed crushing and screening configurations and the interrelationship as they relate to mass flow balance, operating efficiency, plant availability and final production. The entropy of ore bodies limits the standardization of crushing and screening plants, however, consideration for a continuous and sensible assessment of the mass flow balance of the circuit will yield the best achievable results. Since energy costs have continuously risen in the last few years, it is imperative that these circuits offer low power requirements and low operating expenses. The paper will detail how the efficient implementation of continuous mass flow balance in the application of crushing and screening plants will generate quality improvement and process improvement, which will translate into bigger production and energy savings.
