The entire production of oil in Ecuador so far has come from the Santa Elens Peninsula, Province of Guayas. Both the shallow fields of the northern and the deeper fields of the southern part of the peninsula have been in constant exploitation, though the former are of doubtful economic value. In Table I herewith, which commences with the total amounts produced by the various companies up to 1940, annual company totals are given for the succeeding years. The figures for 1944 have been partly estimated. Table 2 gives figures on casinghead gasoline. Shell Company of Ecuador (formerly known as Anglo-Saxon) has continued active exploration in the Oriente region east of the Andes, and during 1944 the Company's first wildcat well was spudded in. International Ecuadorean Petroleum Co. (formerly International Petroleum Co., Limited) has pursued an active exploration campaign since the latter part of 1939, and a drilling string was placed in operation about a year later. A second string of tools was added during 1943 and a third a few months ago. Ten wildcats, all dry, have been completed in this period, two wells are drilling at the present time and other locations are on the program. Seven of the wells thus far drilled are in the area between Guayaquil and the Santa Elena Peninsula, one up the Daule River beyond Balzar, one on Puna Island in the Guayas Estuary and one in the northern province of Esmeraldas. Both the present drilling wells are in the Guayaquil-Santa Elena zone. The situation in regard to concessions has changed during the past four years because I.E.P.C. has made its selections from the extensive Daule-Guayas Study Concession, as a result of which large tracts were returned to the Government; because of the expropriation of the holdings of the "Ecuapetrol," a German concern whose acreage has passed into other hands; the Peruvian-Ecuadorean boundary settlement, which has reduced Shell's holdings somewhat; and the transfer of most of the holdings of the Cia. Molybdenum was first discovered on the Continental Divide in Colorado in 19 11; and in 1918 two companies, one of which was the Climax Molybdenum 250 stpd operation, were producing. In 1919 both mines were shut down, but in 1924 the Climax mine reopened and has been producing ever since. Over the years mine production has been increased until today the mill capacity is 48,000 stpd (43,500 mtpd). From 1935 to 1973 all ore was mined underground by block caving with scraper slushing. Since 1973 ore production has been supplemented by open pit mining. As demand for molybdenum increased, upper levels of the mine became worked-out and new lower levels were opened. In late 1972 production began on the 600 level with the mined ore being primary and secondary crushed in the new No. 4 crushing station. Ore is hauled to the primary in 10 st (9. 1 mt) capacity Granby side-dump cars. The trains, carrying 200 st (181 mt), pass throug.h a dump block and discharge directly into a 54 in. by 84 in. Traylor TC gyratory crusher set at an 8 in. (203 mm) open side setting. Since the ore has already been broken to a size which will pass the finger raises in the mining areas, there are only rare oversize boulders to block the crusher opening. Selection of the crusher was based more on its capacity than its receiving opening, as is often the case with gyratories used in open pit operations. Nominal and maximum capacities for this unit are 1250 and 1800 stph (1 135 and 1635 mtph). The ore is often wet and sticky, so a mechanical car cleaning device is utilized. Under the crusher is a 300 st (270 mt) ore pocket equipped with a 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inclined conveyor which delivers the ore to a 2,000 st (1800 mt) surge bin. Near the head pulley of this conveyor is a wood picking station whe re tramp wood and steel are put into cars for removal. Two more apron feeders remove the primary crushed ore from the surge bin, and impact belts and conveyor belts transport the ore to the crushing station for screening ahead of two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard crushers. Secondary crushed ore is then conveyed to the surface for tertiary crushing. The entire underground crushing room containing the primary, two secondaries, screens and related equipment is serviced by a 100 st (90 mt) crane with a smaller capacity fast hook. A control room is situated so the operator can observe all the crushing operations. Rotoclone collectors remove dust from the entire operation (including the fumes from the zinc pots) and discharge it to the final product belt. The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. The Meadow River No. 1 preparation plant, owned by Sewell Coal Co. which is a subsidiary of the Pittston Co., was commissioned in the spring of 1974. A survey of the environmental noise levels was conducted, and the dominant noise sources identified. An engineering program was initiated to reduce the prevailing levels to a point that the operator's exposure would be within compliance with the MESA regulation for ear protection. The program was continued until compliance was achieved and the attenuation factors for each abatement device recorded. The highlights of this program will be presented with a discussion of the practicality of the devices utilized.

Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers. History The iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 1949, however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.

The geometry of an explosive is known to have a fundamental effect on the resulting shock wave propagation. Typically researchers use a spherical or hemispherical geometry in order to simplify the shock wave so that resultant overpressure and impulse are uniform in all directions. The goal of this research is to understand the overpressure characteristics from a sheet explosive, a geometry often utilized for breeching in the military. In training alone, soldiers can be exposed to several tests per day, which may be contributing to the prevalence of blast induced mild traumatic brain injuries. Using PCB pressure transducers and high speed video, it was found that as the angle departed from normal (perpendicular) to the face of the sheet explosive, the over pressure decreased significantly. When in line with the plane, a decrease of over pressure by as much as 20% was observed. Time of arrival was roughly 20% faster directly in front of the charge with a pressure amplification of 46% relative to a spherical baseline charge of the same mass. This testing may reveal a more complete relationship between the pressure and angle from the explosive that could have applications for military and law enforcement with respect to best practices on blaster location for reduced over pressure exposure.

Roof support systems have evolved from standing posts and timbers to a generation termed ?big nails? where steel bars are inserted into boreholes and anchored with expansion shells and/or resin cartridges. These systems have been effective but are limited to mining height. Additionally, the properties of steel do not resists shear forces or have the flexibility being required in difficult ground conditions. The next generation of roof support systems is coupling the best parts of the ?big nail? and resin grouted cable bolt systems. This paper will present the advanced technical solutions of the next generation of cable systems that includes an indented high-capacity PC-strand used with a variety of fixtures. Case histories of support applications will be presented.

The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

This paper examines the methods and people required for the evaluation of project or corporate acquisitions. Experience over the past five years has shown that some growth can be achieved by carefully evaluated acquisition of gold projects within regions where the acquiring company has gold processing facilities. Many Western Australian companies have participated in this process and the trend seems likely to continue with a diminishing number of larger producing companies controlling through joint venture or direct purchase of widely spaced ore deposits. In some cases the acquisition may include ore processing facilities, however an increasing number of smaller project acquisitions, involving small open pit gold deposits, which are within trucking distance of the acquiring company's mill. Whilst gold prices remain at the current depressed level we can expect to see this trend continue.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. Hydraulic support instability (HSI) is one of the most common causes of disasters in underground coal mining, posing a threat to the safety of mine workers and normal operation of the equipment. It is prone to occur in fully-mechanized mining faces with a large mining height (FMMLMH), especially when the dip angle of the coal seam is large. The key to controlling HSI is to deduce its mechanism and employ effective control techniques. This paper focuses on the analysis of HSI types, the key parameters and techniques to control HSI in FMMLMH, the establishment of a model of HSI in FMMLMH, and a multi-parameter sensitivity mechanical model of different HSI forms in the no. 7219 longwall face in Xutuan Coal Mine, Huaibei Mining Group, by using sensitivity analysis . The results show that HSI mainly presents in three forms: hydraulic support gliding (HSG), hydraulic support tilting (HST), and hydraulic support tail twisting (HSTT). The occurrence of the above three forms depends mainly on support anti-instability capability. In the no. 7219 longwall face, HSG and HST are the main two forms of HSI. The dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between floor and hydraulic support are the sensitive parameters for HSG, while HST is strongly dependent on the dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between roof and hydraulic support. By the applications of measures such as the oblique layout of the working face, cutting the floor into a step pattern, moving the support under pressure, and raising the setting load, the support stability was controlled effectively.

The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique. More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. Geological Survey Bulletin, Contributions to Economic Geology, 1906, and appears also, though in somewhat more extended form without illustrations, in that publication. ALTHOUGH the briquetting of coals and lignites has been carried on for many years in Europe, and has reached a particularly high state of development in France, Belgium, and Germany, it has made comparatively little progress in the United States. The causes for the backwardness of the United States in this regard are several, and first among them has been the abundant supply of cheap raw fuel with which the manufactured article has to compete. With our millions of acres of coal-productive territory, from which the product can in most cases be cheaply extracted, it has appeared in many districts more economical to waste the slack or culm, which con¬stitutes a considerable percentage -of the product, than to attempt to save it at the additional expense required for briquetting. It is for this reason that the view in all sections of the anthracite-region of Pennsylvania is marred by the unsightly culm-banks which encumber the ground, and that in some of the bituminous-districts one sees huge piles of unmarketable- slack allowed to burn up in order to get rid of them. When the coal is of a coking quality, or when the slack can be used for steaming-purposes, these losses are not sustained, but many thousands of tons of what might be converted into usable fuel have been wasted every year simply because of the increased expense involved in its preparation.

The Climax Molybdenum Company' s newest operation is the Henderson project, which is located on the east side of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are estimated at more than 300 million tons at a grade of 0.49% MoS2. For mining the ore a modified panel caving system is used. The ore is transported to the Henderson mill on the west side of the Continental Divide on a 42 in. (1.07 m) gauge railroad through 9.6 miles (15.4 km) of tunnel and 4. 8 miles (7.7 km) of surface track, a total distance of 14.4 miles (23. 2 km). Each train consists of 30 ore cars with capacity of 22 st (20 mt) of ore or 660 st (599 mt) per train. The unmanned trains operate completely automatically. At the 54 in. by 84 in. primary gyratory crusher, the bottom dump ore cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge at a maximum rate of 100 st (91 mt) per minute. Dumped ore falls onto a rock box before passing over a 17 ft long by 46 ft wide (5. 2 m by 14 m) grizzly set at a 40° angle with bar spacings of 7 ½ and 8 ½ in. (191 mm and 216 mm) openings. An estimated 30 to 50% of the ore (which at times is wet and sticky) passes through the grizzly. The operators report that a shallower angle on the grizzly, perhaps 35º to 37º, would have been sufficient and would have prevented impact on the back of the crusher pocket by large boulders. This pocket as well as the crushed ore pocket under the crusher is lined with AR plate. The accompanying drawings show a "future splitter" and the operators are planning the installation of this unit to prevent impact and subsequent damage to the crusher spider. Crushed ore at an 8 to 9 in. (203 mm to 229 mm) size joins the grizzly undersize in the pocket beneath the crusher. This pocket is sized at 660 live st (599 mt) so that it will accept an entire trainload of ore. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a four-speed, 84 in. (2. 1 m) apron feeder operating at 9.6 to 29. 3 fpm (2.9 to 8.9 mpm). A 60 in. (1.5 m) takeaway conveyor operating at 480 fpm (146 mpm) delivers the crushed ore to a 58,000 st live and 193,000 st total (52,600 and 175, 100 mt) open stockpile under an A -frame supported tripper gallery. Impact idlers on the takeaway conveyor under the apron feeder discharge are mounted on wood blocks for a cushioning effect and ripped belt detecting bars are located behind each impact idler. The conveyor tunnel is of corrugated and galvanized steel construction rather than concrete. The concrete crusher enclosure is circular in design from its lowest level at elevation minus 110 ft 4 in. INRODUCTION Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) operates five underground mines - Mufulira, Luanshya, Baluba, Chambeshi and Chibuluma (figure 1) . Associated metallurgical plants provide for the operations of milling, smelting two refineries for copper and a cobalt plant. Primarily a producer of high quality copper (242,000 tonnes during 1980) the Company is also the world's second largest producer of cobalt metal. RCM's remaining ore reserves at 31st March 1980 were 275 million tonnes at 2.84% copper. Monthly ore production is in excess of 1.2 million tonnes. Sublevel open stoping was the choice of mining method for the first underground operations on the Copperbelt for ore with dips steeper than 30 degrees. This was for use at the Roan Antelope mine, subsequently to be called Luanshya mine. The sublevel open stoping system was planned based on the methods used in many of the iron mines of Michigan and New York and in the copper mines of Tennessee. Peterson (Ref. 1) gave the following reasons for employing sublevel stoping, reasons which are still valid today: (1) the working place could always be barred and made safe, and the sublevel exit was always at hand; (2) the working conditions were similar day by day and drilling operations were repetitive; (3) pillar spacing can be varied as conditions demand; and (4) stoping operations could be shut down completely or opened up to full capacity at short notice, without affecting grade or causing wastage of reserves. Such was the success of the method that it was adopted as the basic mining method at all the RCM mines in their initial stages. Although cut and fill, block caving, and sub- level caving methods have been used, sublevel open stoping in its many variants still accounts for nearly 90% of total ore production in the Company. The following descriptions outline some of the applications of sublevel open stoping within RCM. LUANSHYA Geology There are two main ore deposits at Luanshya: the Roan (Luanshya Mining Area), in which mining began in 1930, and Baluba, in which mining production started in 1973 (figure 2). Both orebodies occur in synclinal and variably folded basins. These basins are underlain and completely surrounded by much older schists and granites. The ore formation, an argillite, lies near the base of the sediments and is underlain by conglomerates, quartzites and arkoses. Copper mineralisation is mainly found in two well defined zones, separated by a varying thickness of pyrite mineralisation. In the eastern part of the Roan deposit only the upper orebody is present, but west of 18 shaft and at Baluba the lower orebody predominates. Locally the subjacent quartzites of the footwall formation are also mineralised with copper. The copper mineralisation is found princi- pally as disseminated sulphides, mainly chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Near the surface the sulphides have been changed to oxides. At Baluba the cobalt mineral carrollite is found with the sulphides. Mining methods Sublevel open stoping is the basic mining method. In its standard form this method is best suited to steeply inclined orebodies, with simple structures and with a strong foot- wall and hangingwall. In recent years, as more complex folding and flatter dipping orebodies have been encountered, considerable variations have been introduced. Stope drilling is effected with drifters and extension steel.

This paper analyses the impact of the uncertainty associated with the input parameters in a mine planning optimization model. A real example was considered to aid in the building of a mathematical model that represents the coal production process with reference to the mining, processing, and marketing of coal. This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.
