Dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured by the Bureau of Mines for 13 simulated lunar rocks over the 20-to 100-megahertz frequency range by means of the susceptance-variation method. Measurements were made at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure. Results are presented and some comparison is made with data reported by others. The rocks used include a broad range of physical characteristics and chemical compositions from the large areas of volcanism in Oregon and northern California, and two nonvolcanic types. These rocks make up a suite of rock standards used by a group of laboratories engaged in lunar research. The data presented will add to the basic scientific and engineering knowledge needed to utilize extra-terrestrial mineral resources for support of future space missions.

"This paper deals with the results of the variation of thermal conductivity of rocks with pressure on a laboratory scale. For this purpose, the authors have added a pressure-supplying unit to the apparatus developed by Mousset-Jones and McPherson (1986), Önder (1995), Ashworth and Ashworth (1979), and Innaurato and Occella (1989) in order to measure the thermal conductivity under pressure. The values obtained from the tests performed by this new apparatus have been stated using a regression analysis and the related graphs have been drawn. Results have shown that the thermal conductivity of rock varies digressively with pressure. The same results have been obtained in different rocks types. IntroductionOne of the most important tasks of mining engineers is that of establishing, maintaining and sustaining safe and healthy working conditions in underground mines.Heat can have a profound effect on safe and healthy working conditions and is one of the main problems in deep underground mines. In this regard, the temperature of the air passing through the mine openings increases steadily and causes a decrease in the efficiency of workers due to the unwanted physical effects to human bodies in the working area. At the same time, the hot and humid environment resulting from heat and temperature rise causes some important occupational diseases and increases the accident risks in the related openings."

W. C. MATTESON (communication to the Secretary*).-The criticism and question raised by Arthur Knapp regarding the standardization of nomenclature is most important. Faulty rock classification-is generally the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of the driller. Two remedies might be suggested. In a field where several large companies are operating on an extensive scale, a geologist from each concern might be assigned to superintend the gathering of well-log data and the classification of samples. The geologists from the several operating companies might then combine their data, which would doubtless give valuable information to all interested parties. At present, coordination is not a big factor, unfortunately, but the time will come when conservation will demand such systematic coordination on the part of competing companies. The second remedy lies in instructing and educating the driller to a thorough understanding of the importance of an accurate log and correct classification of the various formations. The writer does not agree with the statement that "90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log." While mistakes in nomenclature often occur, the driller is generally able to classify the important water-, oil-, and gas-bearing formations with a fair degree of accuracy. Such information is often sufficient to permit accurate correlation and also constitutes valuable data for projection purposes. It must be borne in mind that to attempt to use well-log data in a strict scientific sense of accuracy is impracticable and impossible. A broad interpretation and a comprehensive knowledge of the practical limits of such' information are essential in applying it successfully. Even experienced geologists do not always agree on rock classification. The question as to what constitutes correct nomenclature should receive the earnest and immediate attention of geologists, operators, and producers. Although standard textbooks on geology give correct definitions and descriptions of the general rock species, such textbooks fail to develop the subject in sufficient detail for the work under consideration. The story of the rise, progress, and development of our modern railway system is a long but an exceedingly interesting one. The phases it has passed through, the discussions that have arisen from time to time on the most economic modes of construction and working, and the final result these various discussions have led to, are full of importance and interest to the engineer. It is not my intention to deal historically with the subject. I desire simply to speak to the requirements of the hour in Australia. It will not be disputed, I think, that these colonies have reached a point in railway construction and management when, if additional lines to any extent are still to be built, a different principle must be adopted. There are yet large tracts and areas of country to be tapped by the rail and the locomotive, which for years to come must remain untouched if the same expensive gauges and modes of construction are continued. We have yet to see clearly the necessity of introducing a system of light lines that will pay their own way and at the same time augment the traffic of our main lines. This question really no longer remains an unsolved problem. It lies, in a few words, in the acceptance of the, narrowest gauge and the simplest mode of construction that can constitute a pacticable railway. I fear it is hopeless to suggest that private companies should be legally permitted to construct such lines. It seems as if it were next to impossible to move official authorities to enter upon the construction of lines on this principle. It is, all the same an undoubted fact that if private companies could obtain Acts of Parliament, that in several of the colonies a new impetus would be given to railway construction.I may point out that not only has the principle of narrow gauge light railways been adopted in India but private companies are obtaining power to build them. Outside of :England many narrow gauge lines have been made, and in France, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden they have been highly successful.

Stringent environmental benchmarks imposed by governments and successful legal challenges in the country of origin have changed the risk profile for all mining companies over recent years. In developing countries, however, where high government standards may not always be in place, direct community action has often made worthless substantial investments in otherwise viable mining operations. Real limitations are therefore imposed from these risks on all areas of mining activity, wherever they may be. Thus, the bar has been raised for all companies developing or operating mines. This paper argues real financial and global industry reputation benefits accrue when all known environmental risks, where practical, are managed. In response, among major international mining companies, as the industry moves towards greater global consolidation, senior management teams have increasingly adopted corporate governance standards including æTriple Bottom LineÆ (shareholder/government/community) sustainability reporting. Sustainability reporting is encouraged by improved international stockholder and financial investor perceptions by contributing to lowered social, community and geopolitical risk which lowers the cost of access to funds as well as improving staff morale and productivity. New mines must not only be primarily financially viable but must operate throughout in a sustainable way. Case studies of some recent mining operations, who have not foreseen or proactively managed major environmental risks, demonstrate the dire financial and personal implications for managers, directors and shareholders from not identifying and managing these environmental risks. Merely having a corporate policy statement on environmental standards or high level Government approvals process for a mining activity does not preclude mining operations from the risk of direct action by local populations or future adverse legal implications from risks which were perhaps identified but not mitigated effectively. Methods and processes for the identification and active management of environmental risks in the global arena are discussed to add a practical element to sustainability, based on the authors recent strategy development processes with governments and major mining houses such as BHPBillition, Rio and Xstrata. Emphasis is placed on proactive, innovative yet practical solutions which, where possible, show positive contributions firstly to the financial bottom line but also the community at large.

Liberation (the process of destroying the interlock between unwanted materials, such as mineral matter and pyrite, and coal) is one of the most important precursors to the benefication of raw coal in order to produce high grade marketable coals at economical recovery levels. Liberation is achieved usually by comminuting the raw coal. However, because of the significant interaction between the production of fine particles to achieve liberation and the cost of separating fine particles, the coal industry needs a method projecting the change in washability with size reduction. Such a projection can be combined with size reduction and separation simulators in order to examine completely beneficiation circuitry to produce coals of stringent specification. This paper presents the development of an appropriate liberation model for coal and its solution by Monte Carlo simulation to predict the expected washability of the raw coal as a function of comminution. It includes model validation with a known binary mixture as well as with a known teritary mixture.

Your committee's secretary submits the following report, or summary, to the- members of the committee, in an endeavor to lay before them a general review of the information so far received and also his own knowledge .of the work as carried on at a number of plants, this being done in part to secure further information and suggestions from members and lead to a more effective means of furthering the work of the committee. It is suggested that more detailed data be compiled regarding engineering features involved, and that papers be contributed which will deal with the safeguarding of underground electrical installations. There are few operating companies which have not started a more or less systematic campaign to safeguard their employees from accidental injuries and unhealthful surroundings, but a great deal is to be gained by experience. All may welcome the advice and cooperation of those who have been actively engaged in the work and have demonstrated the results obtainable by organized effort, and it is, therefore, exceedingly gratifying to note the ready assistance and hearty cooperation rendered by the companies that may be truly termed pioneers in the movement. No solution of the safety problem is to be found in a strict standardization of methods, rules or devices, as' the various mining, milling and metallurgical practices present too' many conditions differing broadly in general principles, but some standard system embodying principles, already proven to be efficient should be created, which may be modified or elaborated to meet specific requirements of each individual. company, or to fit working conditions as they exist in the various mining camps throughout the country. An industrial plant is -primarily a business undertaking, therefore the economic side-of a safety or welfare campaign is of importance. There is nothing new about dragline dredging for placer gold. The use of the separate unit for excavating preceded the large barge with excavator mounted upon it, which has reached a high state of perfection through use in every part of the world. But at present there is a vogue for a small, inexpensive plant combining a dragline excavator on caterpillar mounting and a gravel-washing plant on a floating barge. The most efficient ones use a bucket of 1 to 2 yd. capacity with boom from 40 to 70 ft. long. The barge varies from 20 by 30 ft. to 36 by 48, and carries the trommel screen, pump, riffle sluices and power engine. Plants in Oboville District In the Oroville district eight such plants have been built since 1933, and have been operated with varying success. The most successful of these is the plant of the Wyandotte Gold Dredging Co. This organization of six active partners constructed its first plant on Wyandotte Creek in the autumn of 1933. To September of 1935 about one million cubic yards of gravel was dredged for an output of about $225,000 in gold. The operation has been successful from the beginning, because of wise management, which was based upon good plant design and proper principles of operation. All the partners have taken a more or less active part in the operation. Usually there is one at work on each shift, and they have conducted their own prospecting and building also. They elected H. F. England as manager, with wide power of control, and he carries out this responsibility energetically and successfully. One of the other plants, started shortly before the Wyandotte, finally abandoned its operation and sold its ground to the latter company, which successfully worked it for a profit. The failure of the other plant was due principally to poor excavating equipment. Another organization that built a plant some months later than the Wyandotte company had considerable difficulty in management and was unable to keep ahead of expenses. Finally, late last summer, it entered into an agreement with the Wyandotte company to have the latter supply

The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user's computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex, with 60% of the total concentrate received being from UG2 reef and 40% from Merensky reef. The concentrate grade differs from 35 g/t to 110 g/t, and from this a PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is produced. The furnace matte produced is sent to the ACP converter in Rustenburg. The Anglo Platinum concentrators, from which concentrate is received, are Lebowa, Potgietersrus, Amandelbult, and Union, as well as the joint venture Modikwa. The concentrate is fed to two flash dryers that utilise coal-fired, fluidized-bed hot-gas generators to produce the hot gas that will drive off the moisture, leaving a fine bone-dry concentrate to feed to the furnace. The dry concentrate is pneumatically transferred to a storage silo before being transferred to the feed bins situated above the furnace. Lime, if required as a flux, may be transferred separately to the furnace feed bin by a pneumatic system. The concentrate and lime is fed from the feed bins onto airslides and into the furnace. The feed rate is automatically controlled, and the system is set up to optimize the power to feed ratio. The electric furnace is nominally rated at 68 MW and the power is transferred into the furnace using six 1.6 m diameter Söderberg electrodes. Concentrate is melted by energy generated when electric current passes through the electrodes and resistive slag layer. On melting, two immiscible phases form: slag and matte. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is denser than slag and collects naturally at the bottom of the furnace. The furnace is constructed of a combination of refractory brick and water-cooled copper coolers. The furnace sidewalls and hearth are cooled by air drawn through the area by cooling fans. The hearth and matte zone are constructed from refractory bricks. The copper coolers reside only in the slag zone of the furnace along the entire perimeter of the furnace. One staggered row of plate coolers is installed above the waffle coolers along the perimeter of the furnace. Matte is tapped periodically through one of the two matte tapholes into 35-ton refractory-lined ladles, and cast into matte ingots on a casting machine. The cooled matte is discharged onto a concrete slab for cooling and then transferred by front-end loaders to the crushing plant. The matte is first crushed in a jaw crusher and then a Rhodax cone crusher to a size of 2 mm before it is loaded into tankers and sent to the ACP. The low-grade slag is tapped from the furnace through a water-cooled copper insert into a short water-cooled copper ?hot launder? which discharges into a granulation cold launder. The granulated slag slurry flows to three rake classifiers, from which the coarse slag is discharged onto a conveyor to dewatering silos. The dewatered slag from the silos is dumped. The water overflow from the classifiers reports to two thickeners where the water is clarified, and the thickener underflow is returned to the rake classifiers. The smelter is a zero-effluent plant and all the water from the slag silos where the slag is dewatered, as well as the storm water, is pumped to the process water dam from where it is pumped back into the plant for process water use. The off-gas from the furnace is drawn through a forced draught cooler and into a high temperature baghouse. The dust collected in the baghouse is pneumatically transferred into bins above the furnace and is fed via the concentrate airslides. The cleaned off-gas is then vented through the main stack.

En este sentido, el presente texto describe el nuevo tratamiento al mineral complejo en la planta concentradora. De forma que se busca definir las variables geometalúrgicas del mineral de Chabuca Norte, optimizar los procesos metalúrgicos del mineral mixto mediante la investigación geometalúrgica, así como correlacionar el entendimiento de la geología y alteraciones del yacimiento con los procesos metalúrgicos y crear valor mediante la optimización de la tasa de tonelaje de tratamiento y el incremento del porcentaje de recuperación de cobre en el proceso.

Philosophy of Excavation Support System The excavation of interest is for the cut-and-cover box sections of the southern approach to the Third Harbor Tunnel, which is part of the Central Artery/Tunnel project in Boston, Massachusetts. The 60' deep excavation is located very close to an existing building which is supported by piles, as shown in Figure 1. Therefore, it was necessary to minimize ground movement which may damage the building.

"In a continuing investigation into the development of uranium alloys for armament applications, some complex base alloy corn positions were modified by varying the amount of alloying elements and by removing one or two of the alloying elements in turn from the base alloys. These uranium-base alloys were specially formulated in a search for heat-treatable, high-strength, ductile, high-density alloys. All alloys studied were ternary, quaternary or more complex alloys of uranium with molybdenum, zirconium, niobium and vanadium. Each cast alloy was studied under three different heat-treatments, and its mechanical and corrosion properties were determined. It was found that although most of the alloys studied had the hardness and strength required, they were extremely brittle and notch-sensitive under tensile stresses."

For the second time in four years, the coal industry was brought to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness in 2006, as two separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground. Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued. In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the public’s attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As a result of these unfortunate events new legislation requiring improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the federal and state level. In 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than double the 22 killed in 2005. Notwithstanding those tragic events, coal production in the United States reached another record level in 2006, ending the year at 1.05 Gt (1,161.4 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2006 was 27.1 Mt (29.9 million st) higher than the prior record set in 2005 of 1.03 Gt (1,131.5 million st). Although coal production rose in 2006, U.S. total coal consumption actually declined for the year. Coal consumption decreased in the electric power sector by 1.1 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly. Only the other industrial sector had higher coal consumption in 2006, increasing by 0.3 percent. (Note: All percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports declined slightly in 2006, while coal imports again reached a record level. The excess production over consumption allowed total coal stocks to increase significantly during the year, as electric generators rebuilt their stockpiles that had fallen substantially in 2005 because of missed shipments in the second half of that year.

This is the final report on Contract H0220049 covering the period from 27 April 1972 to 30 April 1974. The objective of the contract was to develop and evaluate materials and methods to achieve post explosion identification of explosives reliably and economically through the use of phosphor coded grains incorporated into the explosive during its manufacture. A coding system of two spotting phosphors and seven coding phosphors was successfully developed during the execution of the contract. The ability of the coded grains to survive detonation in many different types of explosives was demonstrated and the complete code was extracted from a single 100 micron post-explosion fragment. A method was established for testing grain strength to correlate with field test results and an optical system was designed for extracting the code from the grains. Also in fulfillment of the contract requirements a laboratory method for manufacturing the coded grains was established and ten one-pound samples, each with a different code, were fabricated. Finally, a method was developed for applying a coating of polyethylene to the grains to prevent sensitization of the tagged explosives and the ten one-pound samples were coated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has continued its investigation of chemical additive drilling fluids that produce a zero surface charge (ZSC) on a rock to better define the boundary conditions of the phenomenon. Laboratory drilling tests were performed on Minnesota taconite, Tennessee marble, and Sioux Quartzite using diamond-impregnated coring bits or tungsten carbide spade bits. Drilling fluids were made from chemical additives such as inorganic salts, cationic surfactants, cationic polymers, acids, or nonionic polymers in either distilled, deionized water (DDIW), mine pond water, mine well water, or tap water. These additives were tested below, at, and above their respective ZSC concentrations. Penetration and bit life improvements obtained with ZSC concentration solutions ranged from 88 and 56 pct, respectively, to over 650 pct and over 400 pct, respectively, for the additives tested. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) was found to be the best additive for ZSC-controlled drilling because a continuous range of PEO solution concentrations produced the enhanced ZSC-controlled drilling performance.

MOISTURE in coal must be considered as an impurity, just the same as ash, from the standpoint of utilization of the coal. Being incombustible, it reduces directly the heating value of the coal, and in addition absorbs heat for its evaporation. Its presence means useless expenditures in handling and transportation. In coke plants, extra moisture reduces capacity and may cause damage to brick work and equipment. Accordingly, the removal of extra moisture can be considered just as important as the removal of other impurities, such as ashes, in the modern coal preparation plant. Moisture, which can be removed by heating the coal up to a temperature of 100°C, may be retained in various forms: 1. As a film, on the surface of each coal particle, and in the interstices between particles, retained by capillary forces. 2. Or "occluded" inside the coal particles. This occluded moisture may be either free moisture (as in a sponge), or hygroscopic moisture which varies with atmospheric conditions, (also called "regain").

En Arequipa, Moquegua y Tacna se han definido diversos arcos magmáticos. En los arcos jurásico, paleoceno y oligo-mioceno ocurren pórfidos de distintas características, los cuales presentan diferencias litogeoquímicas (LaN/YbN>20, Sr/Y>40, Eu/Eu*>1, U/Th>0.27, NbN/TaN>0.7). Estos parámetros pueden ser utilizados como guías de exploración, ya que son anomalías desde el punto de vista litogeoquímico. En caso no haya mineralización visible (depósitos ocultos), el empleo de estos trazadores en unidades ígneas (diques, cuerpos subvolcánicos e intrusivos) puede señalar la probabilidad de encontrar depósitos en profundidad.
