The past decade has seen remarkable progress by the railroads both in equipment and concepts in the handling of dry bulk. materials. While such shipments have always been an important part of the traffic handled by the railroads I little was done to improve the efficiency of handling or toward attempted optimization of equipment design before 1960. Several developments at about that time turned attention to this important segment of railroad traffic. One was the construction of a successful coal slurry pipe-line. Another was the promise of substantial economy in electric power transmission by ultrahigh voltage systems and finally, came the growing technological and economic feasibility of nuclear fuel electric generating plants. Each of these developments was a threat to the coal traffic of the railroads --the most important single commodity they handled in terms of revenue and tonnage. By the mid-1950's I Southern Railway management had become most concerned with its growing investment in freight car equipment and the declining revenue productivity of the capital employed. Additionally I there was substantial concern with the loss of business and potential losses in the area of the railroad's greatest economic advantage --bulk commodity movements. In 1958 a small team was established to study this problem. They arrived at two conclusions. The first conclusion was that within limits of maximum gross allowable weight on rail the lowest unit net capacity cost of investment came at maximum allowable gross weight per car unit. The removal of tritium from tritiated water (-0.5 µCiIL) was studied by metallothermic reduction using aluminum. The influence of the three variables namely the aluminum powder amount, the NaOH concentration and the reaction time has been studied on the tritium activity reduction. The experimental results and statistical analysis showed that more than 85% of tritium can be removed from the tritiated water. Further work on the tritium recovery as well as efforts to totally decontaminate water by incorporating a cryogenic concept is currently pursued.

Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

Consumption of plastics has been growing in both the U.S. and world markets since the mid-1930s. This growth is due to plastics being used to make new products and as a replacement material for existing products. This paper develops an understanding of the replacement process by looking at the use of plastic, specifically PVC, in the construction pipe industry. History details the growth of the plastics industry and a discussion of the material selection process indicates the advantages and disadvantages of plastic pipe. Analysis shows that the use of plastic, as an alternative material for pipe, is having a significant effect on the cast iron, copper, clay, and steel industries. For the purpose of understanding the replacement process, three example residential systems were examined with a lifecycle cost analysis being performed. PVC was the material of choice in 1988 for all systems. Even though disposal cost was the one area where PVC was not the most cost effective, disposal costs were not sufficient to offset the overall advantage of using PVC on an economic basis. That plastic competes effectively with other materials, in terms of material properties and cost, indicates that further work should be performed to understand the impact plastics have on other material markets.

A Capilaridade, definida como um fenômeno de atração e repulsão, que ocorre no contato de líquidos com um sólido, fazendo com que este líquido se desloque sobre a superfície sólida, é um dos parâmetros primordiais para analisar a durabilidade de argamassas de múltiplo uso. Neste contexto quatro traços de argamassas, dosadas em laboratório e industriais com diferentes níveis de consistência, foram utilizadas para avaliar a correspondência entre as normas brasileira NBR 15259 (ABNT, 2005) e europeia UNI EM 15801 (2010) para cálculo do coeficiente de capilaridade. Os resultados indicam que mesmo seguindo procedimentos bastante divergentes ambas a normas proporcionaram valores de coeficiente de capilaridade para todos os traços estudados. Assim sendo fica comprovada a equivalência técnica das duas normas estudadas para obtenção do coeficiente de capilaridade.

Materials in process or in stocks are quite relevant items in almost every plant, particularly in mining operations, where efficiency in rate of recovering material of interest becomes a key issue when production costs are evaluated. A manager requires information to do an effective use of the resources, especially when raw materials are involved. Losses associated to leaking, efficiency in the transformation process, performance of equipment, and operating conditions are a short list of items which must be properly identified and evaluated. Operations supervisors require information in order to keep key process variables under control. Because of these information needs, it is absolutely necessary to carry on a series of activities related with installation and maintenance of measuring equipment, sampling equipment, sample preparation, chemical analysis, statistical analysis, data handling and reports generation. These pieces of data must be managed on a wise manner in order to get the most of it, keeping always on mind data reliability. Normally, information related with metallurgical balance and even more, the metallurgical balance concept, is handled under an accounting criteria which does not allow dealing with the real world. This situation happens because the criteria utilized do not consider aspects such as bias and uncertainty associated with every measurement that affect the quality of the information and therefore conclusions drawn from it. The purpose of this paper is to give a few rules, necessary to follow, in order to develop an adequate Metallurgical Balance System for an operational point of view. The Gaussian approach for error propagation is used as a basis, allowing one to know the actual uncertainty of the balance and the way how it can be improved. A few real applications of this concept are listed, detailing experiences obtained from practice.

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. Following a disaster in a mine, it is important to understand the state of the mine damage immediately with limited information. Computational fluid dynamics can be used to simulate and ascertain information about the state of ventilation controls inside a mine. This paper describes a simulation of tracer gas distribution in an experimental mine with the ventilation controls in various states. Tracer gas measurements were taken in the lab experimental apparatus, and used to validate the numerical model. The distribution of the tracer gas, together with the ventilation status, was analyzed to understand how the damage to the ventilation system related to the distribution of tracer gases. This study will be used in future research in real mine measurements to compare collected and simulated profiles and determine whether damage to the ventilation system has been incurred during an emergency situation, the nature of the damage and the general location of the damage.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has cooperated with Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation Cyprus Casa Grande Mine, Cas a Grande, Arizona, since 1988 to assess the hydrology of an in situ leaching test facility. This work has resulted in an in situ design for leaching copper oxide ore that takes advantage of the increased mineral access associated with poor quality rock surrounding mine drifts. Blasting and bulkheads are used to produce readily-leachable rubble and contain and control solution movement, respectively. The design reduces the need for handling solution under high pressures in an injection/recovery system for in situ leaching of underground ore bodies. Early work at the site recognized a stress redistribution zone and increased transmissivity near drifts. Fracture data from a corehole oriented parallel to the dip of the ore body indicated an increase in fracture frequency around drifts a distance of 21 m (70 ft) away from the 5 m (16 ft) diameter drifts.

Around 235 million tonnes of marine aggregates have been dredged in the last decade from the UK continental shelf alone. The current distribution of marine aggregate production licence areas in North West Europe reflects the relationship between a variety of factors such as the natural distribution of deposits of sand and gravel, the demand for aggregates, the technical capabilities of the dredging fleet and environmental considerations. Whilst the sand and gravel deposits targeted by the marine aggregate industry are generally relict and therefore geographically fixed, the remaining factors have evolved over time and will continue to do so in future. Applications for new licences must not only reflect the current situation, but anticipate future trends. The main markets for marine aggregates are the construction industry, centred around the larger centres of population and coastal protection projects along the coastline of Europe. The aggregate industry as a whole does not create demand but simply meets it. Many factors influence the overall demand for aggregates and guidance exists for those in authority and industry who need to plan for the supply of aggregates. Adequate supplies should be maintained at the best balance of social, environmental and economic cost, whilst ensuring that extraction and development are consistent with the principles of sustainable development.

"It is well known that the lost coal left in the ground in mining, under such conditions that recovery is practically impossible, constitutes a large proportion of the coal in the beds worked. A recent estimate, in a paper on ""The World's Fuel Supply"" presented by Prof. L. P. Breckinridge, of Yale University, before the Annual Meeting of the. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, places the average loss in bituminous coal mining as one-third left in the ground.The bald statement that there is a loss of one ton of coal for every two recovered may seem to those not familiar with coal mining to imply inexcusable and wanton waste. Perhaps a better way of expression is in terms of total recovery rather than in terms of losses. Many mine superintendents and mine owners will readily concede that their total recovery may be only 60 to 75 per cent, but to state that they are wasting 25 to 40 per cent arouses antagonism. The suggestion is of willful waste, whereas the majority of the operators try to the best of their ability to get a high recovery under the adverse and complex conditions that confront them. These involve natural, commercial, and labor conditions, and the requirement in many cases of boundary pillars under railroads and buildings, which may be called for in the deed or lease, or in the absence of specific exemption in the deed or lease, the common law requirement that a surface owner is entitled to the support of the surface."

Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.

Behavioral accidents are a particular type of accident. They are caused by inappropriate individual behaviors and faulty reactions. Catastrophe theory is a means for mathematically modeling the dynamic processes that underlie behavioral accidents. Based on a comprehensive data base of mining accidents, a computerized catastrophe model has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. This model systematically links individual psychological, group behavioral, and mine environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several longstanding questions about why some normally safe behaving persons may spontaneously engage in unsafe acts that have high risks of serious injury. Field tests with the model indicate that it has three important uses: It can be used as an effective training aid for increasing employee safety consciousness; it can be used as a management laboratory for testing decision alternatives and policies; and it can be used to help design the most effective work teams.

In 1995, Congress abolished the Bureau of Mines in the Department of Interior but preserved the safety and health research functions being performed at the Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers. These functions were transitionally housed in the Department of Energy before permanently merging with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Department of Health and Human Services, in October 1996. Since the merger of the former Bureau with NIOSH, there has been an active evaluation of ongoing research activities, significant interaction with stakeholders, and the development of a process leading to "data informed" priority setting. This presentation will review current surveillance information concerning the level of injury and disease from mining work and will discuss how research priorities are evolving to improve the contribution of research to the prevention of injury and disease.

Research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature. It is insufficient to simply observe, explore, record and classify. It i necessary, as well, to fit the observations into a satisfying theoretical scheme; that is, to synthesize. Two examples of successful research programs in physical metallurgy are di cussed from this point of view. A pessimistic view is taken of the prospects for rapid growth of research activities in the Canadian metallurgical industry. THE term "research" is used indiscriminately to describe any intellectual or experimental activity which leads to a change in society. Proponents of various activities, ex-tending all the way from alloy development to subliminal advertising, use the status of the term for special advantage. With the Canadian Government entering upon a project of support to industrial research, it might be well to determine what definition is most in the public interest. As an academic, I have a rather jealous attachment to the definition that research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature.

El "Punto de fluencia” es el contenido de humedad crítico a partir del cual un mineral concentrado sufre “liquefacción”, es decir, libera la humedad como agua libre al ser sometido a las sacudidas propias de una travesía por mar. En esta perspectiva, el presente texto correlaciona la influencia que tiene el proceso de producción de los concentrados en el punto de fluencia a través de los siguientes factores: granulometría, efecto de los reactivos de flotación y la mineralogía. De forma que al conocer los factores que influyen notablemente en el valor de la humedad límite de transporte, se evita los riesgos de que la carga sufra licuefacción durante su transporte por mar.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar as soluções implementadas para modernização e automação do laminador piloto do Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo-IPT, importante ferramenta de pesquisa do seu Centro de Tecnologia em Metalurgia e Materiais. O IPT, em parceria com o Laboratório de Fenômenos de Superfície da EPUSP, tem trabalhado nas duas últimas décadas com o desenvolvimento de ligas resistentes a desgaste, principalmente para uso em cilindros de trabalho para laminação a quente. Com recursos provenientes de projeto co-financiado pelo BNDES e pela Gerdau, o laminador piloto e o forno de indução para aquecimento de placas foram reformados e modernizados, permitindo que a célula de laminação trabalhe de forma autônoma e que os dados de processo sejam continuamente registrados. Nesse projeto estão sendo conduzidos ensaios de laminação de longa duração para caracterizar e quantificar o dano progressivo imposto aos cilindros pela laminação a quente de placas de aço carbono sob condições controladas de temperatura e grau de deformação e de refrigeração dos cilindros. A modernização do laminador envolveu 3 etapas: reforma e automação do laminador e do forno de aquecimento; montagem do sistema de refrigeração dos cilindros e instrumentação dos cilindros de trabalho.
