Only in recent years has any practical headway been made in the application of aerial photography to geological problems, and up to the present time its principal value to the geologist and mining engineer has been in "areal geology;" i. e., the study of formations as revealed at the surface. The object of this paper is to set forth briefly the principal advantages that may be derived from aerial photographic data in geological work and to serve in a measure as a guide to those who may be contemplating its use. Geophysical prospecting has for object the locating of mineral under the surface. Inasmuch as the geologist's chief complaint in life is a dual one—inability to see under the surface and inability to visualize comprehensively what he does see on top of the ground—geophysical prospecting coupled with aerial photography should do much to lessen his burdens. To what extent aerial photography can be made a useful adjunct to geophysical prospecting remains to be proved, but the inference drawn here is that it holds many alluring possibilities. To avoid disappointments, it should be stated at the outset that to the geologist or mining engineer an aerial photograph or mosaic is only a tool, the efficient use of which he must set out to master. Upon his skill and ingenuity in applying it to particular problems will depend largely the value of the results that he will obtain. Under the most favorable conditions an aerial mosaic, or even a few loose photographs, because of the exceptionally comprehensive oversight which they afford of field data, such as dips and strike observations at isolated outcrops, local indications of faulting, mineral and fossil finds, greatly facilitate study and correlation, save much tedious foot work, and may repay their cost many times. Even so, types of country may be found where the most skillful use of the best of pictures will produce results so meager as to render the cost of aerial photography entirely unwarranted. Between these two extremes will be found endless variations and possibilities. Hence no set rules can be promulgated. The safest procedure is to treat each case as a separate problem and to carefully weigh the relative advantages and shortcomings of aerial photography before embarking on its use.

Some of you will recall from the last Randol conference held in Cairns, Australia in April 1991 that I shot my mouth off when I declared that I believe that these conferences are covering only a small slice of the overall mining industry pie because the major emphasis is on ore processing. The attendees at these conferences to date have been composed principally of metallurgists, which naturally leads to a preponderance of papers on this important feature, but it is only one of the areas of the mining business.

"Synvolcanic structures played a fundamental role in the genesis, morphology, and siting of volcanogenic massive sulfide ores and associated hydrothermal alteration in the Archean South Sturgeon Lake caldera complex. The most voluminous and persistent hydrothermal venting and massive sulfide deposition occurred along synvolcanic rifts and grabens associated with faults and tectonic fissures that created permeable fracture zones deep enough to access the underlying hydrothermal reservoir. The type of fracturing is highly variable and changes with the composition, competency, degree of consolidation, and alteration of host rocks. Synvolcanic structures and fracture styles also vary according to the amount and type of tectonic movement, including extension-related collapse, shearing and faulting perpendicular to the principal direction of extension, and orthogonal faulting and shearing. Permeable conduits were created by tension fracturing along fault zones, brittle deformation at the intersections of orthogonal faults, and by extensional fractures in stockworks. In texturally uniform footwall rocks, the distribution of alteration zones was controlled by the morphology of the structural conduit. In rocks with vertical and/or lateral facies, permeability, and competency changes (e.g., Lyon Lake graben), there was an additional stratigraphic control over fluid migration. Some crosscutting synvolcanic structures, alteration zones, and intrusions appear as stratiform units at the present erosion surface due to regional deformation and the present attitude of the volcanic stratigraphy.Hydrothermal mineral assemblages (e.g., quartz, carbonates, chlorite, pyrite, chalcopyrite) infilling structurally induced fractures provide good evidence of fluid migration pathways. However, mineralogy can vary significantly according to the fluid characteristics, host rock geochemistry, and subsequent metamorphic history of the area.Clearly, one of the best methods for locating volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits is to delineate the attitudes of synvolcanic structures, and explore those that show evidence of associated high-temperature hydrothermal mineral assemblages. Excellent exploration targets occur where synvolcanic structures with hydrothermal alteration intersect paleo-seafloor horizons."

In the excavation works of some deep foundation pits within the boundaries of Guang­dong Province of China, though some measures, such as steel sheet piles, diaphragm walls, etc. were taken to protect the walls, the construction of the excavation works was often accompanied by damage of buildings and public facilities, surface settelment. sand boil and collapse of piles. When these happened, only chemical grouting could be used as the most efficient measure for rushing to deal with or rescue the emergencies. Besides, the application of chemical grouting protection wall technique also palys a very important role under the geologic conditions of the coastal areas of Guangdong Province, when applied in the mucky oystershell layer wealthy in water and the deep mud layer, it can not only achieve good results, but also reduce the cost significantly. In this paper, we discuss the water-tight and earth retaining functions of chemical grouting protection wall in weak formation, and introduce the applicable ranges of chemical grouting protection wall in the excavation of deep foundation pits. Some technological principles and design considerations of the construction of chemical grouting protection wall are presented. Different types of protection wall are also introduced.

Mission Bay is a 300-acre reclaimed site in San Francisco, California, that is currently being redeveloped. Plans include new neighborhoods, parks, a new University of California, San Francisco, research and development campus, a biotechnology campus, and commercial office buildings. New infrastructure is being constructed throughout the site, consisting of utilities, pump stations, and roadways. Previously, Mission Bay was a part of the San Francisco Bay. Reclamation of the shallow bay coincided with the booming development in San Francisco in the 1880s and continued through 1920. Subsurface conditions are extremely variable throughout the site. The stratigraphy generally consists of 5 to 45 feet of fill, up to 140 feet of weak, compressible clay (?Bay Mud?), dense sand, stiff clay, and bedrock of the Franciscan Complex that has been encountered 5 to 210 feet below the ground surface (bgs). Geotechnical issues related to these subsurface conditions include liquefaction, lateral spreading, settlement, and adequate foundation support. This paper presents case studies of the geotechnical aspects of design and construction of several buildings in Mission Bay, highlighting the similarities and variability in the subsurface conditions and the different conclusions and solutions developed for each project. The case studies will include: 1) a building supported on steel H-piles where the depth to bearing varies from about 70 feet bgs in one half of the site to 165 feet bgs in the other half; 2) a building supported on precast, prestressed, concrete piles bearing in a thick, very dense sand layer; 3) a building with over 100 feet of Bay Mud supported on 120- to 180-foot-long PCPS concrete piles driven to bedrock adjacent to buildings supported on steel H-piles driven to bedrock; and 4) sites where auger pressure grouted displacement piles (APGD) and Tubex piles were installed. Case studies will include results of pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing and static pile loads tests, where performed.

For a number of years, from an economic standpoint, the ventilation of the Colorado mine of the Davis-Daly Copper Co. has been a difficult problem. The development through the main hoisting shaft was pursued for a number of years and to a depth of about 2500 ft.( 762 m.)before large bodies of good commercial ore were opened up. This lack of early success in exploration restricted expenditures for ventilation, with the result that the present orebodies were opened up at a depth of 2500 ft., and in country rock f relatively high temperature, without adequate means f supplying the development faces and the stopes with cool or fresh air of low humidity and suitable velocity. During the progress of development, two or three connections were made at higher levels with the workings of adjoining operations, but these were of a makeshift and unsatisfactory character and afforded no means for carrying downcast air from the surface, in anything approaching a direct course, to the working faces. During the latter part of 1917, arrangements were made with. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., whereby, during the year 1918 and the early part f the year 1919, a crosscut was driven eastwards on the 2500-ft. level of the Colorado shaft and connection was made by means f an up-raise of approximately 200 ft. to a crosscut driven westwards from the 2800-ft. level of the Belmont mine, this crosscut at the top of the raise being driven at Davis-Daly expense by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. This connection, in conjunction with a No. 11 Sirocco fan installed near the Colorado shaft, provided the Colorado mine with a maximum of approximately 30,000 cu. ft. per min. of relatively fresh air, most of which came in a fairly direct route from the downcast Belmont shaft through the No. 11 fan to the 2500-ft. level stopes. After passing through these stopes and the stopes of overlying levels, it passed through the main crosscuts on higher levels back to the Colorado shaft, which provided the upcast for this current of air. "Calcium ferrite slags are currently used in a number of copper-converting processes. Despite the industrial importance of this system the phase equilibria have not been fully investigated. Characterization of this slag system is necessary to improve the control of process parameters, including fluxing and operating temperatures. Recently, a modified experimental method has been developed; this involves rapid quenching of slag samples equilibrated at high temperatures with the resulting phase assemblages analysed using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). In the present study, experiments were completed under controlled temperatures and oxygen partial pressures using CO/C02 or H2/C02 gas mixtures. The investigated slags were supported during equilibration by a substrate of the primary phase. This technique removes the limitations arising from the use of crucibles and facilitates rapid quenching of the melt. Experiments were carried out at 1200°C and 1250°C (1473 Kand 1523 K) and in the composition range 0-40 wt.% Cu20, 0-25 wt. % CaO and 45-80 wt. % Fe203. Liquidus and solidus data are reported for the primary phase field of spinel between the oxygen partial pressures of 10-4.5 to 1 o- 6-5 atm. The analyzed compositions of liquids and solids are used to construct the phase diagram of ""Cu20"" -CaO-""F ez03"" system in equilibrium with metallic copper at fixed oxygen partial pressures."

Nickel solubilities in spent pickling solutions (i.e. HF-HNO3-H2O solutions ) were measured as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations. The chemical analysis of the industrial pickling solutions and sludges were made. The stable phases observed in the sludges are FeF3?3H2O, and ( FeCr ) F3?3H2O. Pure Ni, and stainless steel type 316 were used in this study. The results showed that the solubility of Ni increased with increase in concentrations of HF in pickling solution at a fixed concentration of HNO3: An excellent agreement between the experimental solubility data and the theoretical data was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the solid solubility product formed is mainly NiF2?4H2O compound.

Exxon Minerals Company uses geostatistical techniques for ore resource evaluation of its mineral projects. These techniques provide the most reliable estimates of recoverable tonnage and grade and uniform and realistic confidence limits. A schema has been developed which categorizes the company's successive evaluation phases. Clear separation is intended between geostatistical estimates and other factors in project evaluation such as mining, metallurgy, and economics. Company management seeks consistent and reliable estimates for investment decision-making and to meet growing demands for disclosure of mineral assets.

Technical developments in the American petroleum industry as regards exploration, drilling, production, and transportation were characterized by many anomalous conditions during the half decade 1914-19. A review of the literature of that period discloses the striking fact that individual geologists, engineers, and other technologists were surprisingly well versed concerning the occurrence of natural hydrocarbons and methods of extracting them and were acquainted with many of the physical and chemical characteristics that influence the behavior of fluids in natural reservoirs. However, the industry as a whole knew little of the correct application of recognized fundamentals; indeed, judged by present standards certain expediencies of self-styled "practical' operators seem cumbersome, if not evidences of ignorance.

FERGUS County, Mont., shown in Fig. 1, is known for its once famous gold mines near the old towns of Gilt Edge, Maiden, and Kendall. But at Heath, a small farming community near the foot-hills of the Snowy Mountains, thousands of tons of gypsum have been mined since 1916. The value of the gold taken from the mines of Fergus County runs into millions of dollars; the value of the products made from the gypsum of the Heath mine is also in the millions. The gypsum mine will continue to produce for many years, while the gold mines are closed today.

Voice Frequency (VF) electromagnetic trapped miner location devices were tested for reliability and effectiveness in 93 coal mines. Tests included uplink pulsed CW, downlink pulsed OW and downlink voice evaluations. Frequencies were 630, 1050, 1950 and 3030 Hertz. Overburden depths varied from 70 feet to 1550 feet. Successful communications were established at 91 of the 93 mines. Data indicate the transmitters and receivers will operate in practically all coal mine environments. Reliability and accuracy as location devices appear to depend on noise, depth and presence of metallic objects which distort the magnetic field. In addition, theoretical models appear to define best case situations in terms of noise and conductivity. Minor hardware problems were encountered, mostly involving battery contacts, switches and antenna cables on the receivers. No hardware problems occurred with the transmitters.

Beyer Barometric Condenser The Ingersoll-Rand Co. is now offering to the trade complete steam­condensing plants for all service conditions. This equipment includes the Beyer barometric condenser, for' which the company has secured the patent rights, Imperial duplex and Ingersoll-Rogler straight-line reciprocating dry vacuum pumps and, where required, Cameron simplex and centrifugal pumps. The Beyer barometric condenser is of the counter-current type, in which air and cooling water flow in opposite directions. The steam inlet is at the bottom of the condensing v el, the water inlet above and the air-removal opening at the top. The sheets of cooling water over owing the pool at the inlet point meet the entering steam. The two are brought into intimate contact by conical baffle plates which assist the water to absorb to its full capacity the latent heat of the steam. The non-condensable air liberated in the condensing action rises through the falling water to the removal point at the top, being cooled to practically the temperature of the incoming water. In a small-scale mining in Brazil?s northeast, scheelite were exploited since 1940?s using a traditional gravity concentration flowchart (composed by jigs and shacking tables) that operates with low efficient for fine particles. Tailing of this plant was submitted to chemical, mineralogical and size characterization. Results pointed 50% smaller than 74µm with a grade of 0.11% WO3. The particle?s size is an important operational variable to heighten recuperation by shacking tables. Tests using Falcon SB40 centrifuge concentrators and shacking table were realized, optimizing their operational variables. Based on the tests results a new flowchart was proposed for concentrating and tailings recovery.

The consumption of slab zinc in the United States increased sevenfold in less than a half century since 1900. Therein is reflected the innate characteristics of this versatile and nearly indispensable nonferrous metal whose use has grown at more than twice the rate of industrial production. The total metal consumption was substantially stimulated during the two World War periods, which were likewise marked by notable changes in use pattern accompanied by shifts in geographic distribution. This information circular summarizes basic data collected for many years by the Bureau of Mines, but in particular presents for the 1940-45 period details derived from the comprehensive slab zinc consumption survey inaugurated in 1940. The total consumption of slab zinc has been broken down into four major categories galvanizing, brass products, rolled zinc, and zinc-base alloys -- with minor applications grouped under a fifth heading, other uses. Ex- cept for the inclusion of zinc-base alloys with other uses before 1926, the above-named segregation has been shown for the entire period 1900-45. 11- though a substantial tonnage was taken by all groups in all years, there were large shifts in the use pattern in both World War periods. In both, the Allied Powers depended heavily on the United States for zinc-bearing products, especially those required by war industrius. The departures from usual uses were, however, much more marked during the second than in the first period, mainly because the United States could not have met the tro- mendously expanded war-materiel demands had the greater slab zinc needs of a period of high industrial activity been supplied. The geography of consumption is known in detail only for 1940-45. Even in that short period, substantial shifts are observable, largely the reaction from conversion to war production in 1940-41 and reconversion to peacetime consumption in 1945. However, there is so evidence of other shifts in consumption centers that appear to reflect longer-term develop- ments.

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb Corporation's Tsumeb and Kombat mines. In this paper the Kornbat mill flowsheet and metallurgical data are given with particular reference made to the separation techniques using activated carbon. The mine's historical background, geology and mining methods are described briefly.

This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for mining companies and communities in investing in human rights compatible, credible, effective and representative company-community relationships.   The paper draws on the work of Professor John Ruggie, Special Representative to the United Nations Secretary General on Business and Human Rights, and his Protect, Respect and Remedy framework for business and human rights, The CDA Collaborative Learning Project, and the experience of Oxfam Australia. This paper begins with the premise that Australian companies commence operations offshore with high expectations and a willingness to work harmoniously with local communities. However, as companies increasingly engage in global operations - particularly in weak governance and conflict zones - the challenge to establish and sustain rights compatible, meaningful, corporate community relationships and grievances mechanisms becomes both more complex and necessary. Establishing trust and honouring commitments made to communities, including legacy issues, is a critical component in good corporate community relations.   The second part of the paper will identify some of the impacts and challenges of mining that need to be addressed in corporate community negotiations and consultation. Respect for indigenous people's rights and their right to give or withhold consent for a project to proceed is increasingly evident, as is the growing global expectations with regard to revenue transparency. As such, key challenges include: grievance mechanisms; free prior and informed consent; transparency and accountability; the gender impact of mining; resettlement, compensation and benefit sharing; and security issues.   Finally, the paper will provide practical guidance to companies on how to establish effective corporate community relationships. It will include examples, such as human rights impact assessments, gender impact assessments, and establishing local level grievance procedures. The paper will include an Oxfam Australia case study of a dialogue mechanism at Tintaya copper mine in Peru.

In the preparation of this paper each subject has been presented by the engineer in charge. L. R. Dobbs wrote the part pertaining to tae technique of square-set mining, J. M. Snow the part on geology, and M. D. Paine, the part on ventilation. All of the drawings are the work of H. W. Waterfield of the engineering department. The statistics of the Tintic district ware prepared by A. G. MacKenzie. Each writer has attempted to show the difficulties that arise in operating and the practices used to overcome them.

In operations that use the sublevel stoping mining method, production scheduling takes into account factors, including ore reserve envelopes, ore grade averages, equipment capacity, feed controls to the mill, and geotechnical restrictions, across the scheduling horizon. Mathematical programming is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the decision-making process in regard to the most viable production schedule in light of a given set of limitations. The majority of research on sublevel stope mining focuses primarily on a single objective of optimisation, which is to maximise the net present value (NPV). Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations are becoming more prevalent in the mining industry. This includes aspects relating to deforestation, land disturbances, gas emissions, community relations, and water usage, among many others. Institutional and other kinds of investors are becoming more interested in the work that resource companies do regarding their ESG obligations. This review article identifies the gap in the existing literature and proposes to simultaneously optimise the production schedule around three objectives. Two of these relate directly to ESG aspects.

"Abstract - Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres .The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 1950s and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. ln recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors.There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."
