Technology developed and first implemented in the United Kingdom enables very low grade aluminum scraps containing oils, organics, plastics and ferrous metals to be directly charged, without pretreatment, into a unique melting furnace. The system has been in full scale production for over three years. The oxy-fuel-based furnace design incorporates internal afterburning in the furnace's hot zone, producing excellent thermal efficiency and very low emissions. The furnace is inherently low in NOx. This paper will provide both theoretical background and extensive operating results for this new melting concept. Applications describing both purpose built new furnaces and retrofits of existing reverberatory furnaces will be presented. Extensive operating emissions data will be presented.

MINING occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, but its relative contribution has increased greatly during the post- war period. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value I of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, but by 1936 the pro- portion had risen steadily to 12.76 per cent. Mining felt the depression, hut unlike agriculture, which is still ' sorely stricken, it has passed from early convalescence to complete recovery. For each of the last two years new high records were established for the industry as a whole and for the quantity of most metals produced. Mining has had a notable effect on - the growth of the power industry in Canada. Water power has been developed in the same or adjacent areas wherever mining camps have been 1 established, with few exceptions. Consumption of electrical energy by the mining industry gained 72 per cent within a decade, rising from 1604 million kw.-hr. in 1926 to 2754 in 1935. Oil, coal, and gas account for approximately 80% of global primary energy, but only a portion of total airborne CO2 eq (approx. 35% at GWP20 to 65% at GWP100), even though they account for 95% of total measured CO2 emissions. The benefits of these energy sources, as well as their related costs, are not all incorporated in current energy policy discussions. Global greenhouse gas policies must include documented changes in measured airborne CO2 eq to avoid spending large amounts of public funds on ineffective or sub-optimal policies. The authors examined airborne CO2, which is less than half of emitted CO2, as well as reported CH4 emissions and the global warming potential of CH4 as published by the IPCC for coal and natural gas. The surprising conclusion is that surfaced-mined coal appears ‘better for the climate’ than the average natural gas, and all coal appears beneficial over LNG. Therefore, current CO2-only reduction policies and CO2 taxes are leading to unintended consequences and the switch from coal to natural gas, especially LNG, will not have the desired impact of reducing predicted future global warming; in fact, quite the contrary. A large portion of anthropogenic global warming is attributed by the IPCC and IEA to CH4, but it must be noted that CH4 emissions from natural sources and from agriculture account for approximately 40% and 25% of annual global CH4 emissions respectively. Energy accounts for about 20% of documented CH4 emissions. CO2 contributes only approximately 35% of annual airborne anthropogenic GHG emissions after accounting for CH4, over a 20-year horizon. At a 100-year horizon, the contribution of CO2 increases to approximately 60%. Energy policies that do not consider all GHG emissions along the entire value chain will lead to undesired economic and environmental distortions. All carbon taxation and CO2 pricing schemes are incorrect and need to be revised. At IPCC’s GWP20 an approximately 2%1 higher loss of CH4 across the value chain prior to combustion of natural gas versus coal will lead to ‘climate parity’ of coal with natural gas. According to public data, natural gas value chains have high CH4 and undocumented CO2 losses. On a global average, using only IEA-documented CH4 data, natural gas emits approximately 15% more CO2 eq than surface-mined coal, over a 20-year horizon. This difference will increase as the use of shale gas and LNG expands. Investors should support all energy systems in a manner that avoids an energy crisis, including intermittent renewable energy systems where they make sense. If CO2 emissions need to be reduced, one of the most effective ways would be to install ultra-supercritical power plants with CCUS technology. However, the undisputed benefits of increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere because of its promotion of photosynthesis and plant growth effects (fertilization) need to be considered in energy policy decisions as well. The authors suggest that future research and development should concentrate on reducing net emissions from fossil fuel power plants and providing cost-effective and reliable new conventional power generation capacity, utilizing clean coal and clean natural gas technology.

Visiting Spring Canyon, a historic coal mining district near Helper, Utah, I was impressed by the great accomplishments that had taken place there. A tour book of the region tells of a period that began in the early 1900's, when the land was still very much the Old West, when settlers lived out their lives in coal company towns and produced a resource that was to build a nation (Cunningham, F., 1990). Between 1912 and the early 1970's, 11 mines had come and gone in that narrow canyon less than 15 kilometers long. Spring Canyon is a historic district now, but I could not dwell too long on the richness of its history. I was there to look for evidence of PCBs.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within groundwater aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contaminantion. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environ- mental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laboratory experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit. Dispersion attending the flow of fluids in a porous medium is also shown to be an important factor. The effect of dispersion can greatly reduce the benefits of having a displacing cation which is adsorbed selectively with respect to ammonium. Since dispersion increases almost linearly with fluid velocity, an optimum displacement rate may exist.

The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska&apos;. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State&apos;s Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. Abstract. This cater presents the development of and results from a computer model of in-situ uranium leaching. This model uses a streamline-concentration balance approach and is useful with a vide range of reservoirs. It can be used with any type of veil system, in a reservoir with or without boundaries, and with any form of descriptive kinetics. The model also includes the effects of dispersion and consumption of oxidant by minerals other than uranium. The effects of areal sweep, variable uranium concentrations, variable permeability, and the presence of oxidant consumers on uranium production are shown and discussed.

IT HAS been generally recognized that, owing to the extreme friability of, galena, fine grinding has a tendency to cause excessive sliming of the mineral, so operators of lead mills have attempted to avoid this condition by commencing concentration at as coarse sizes as any mineral is freed. Jigging has been the basis of the milling process, making a clean coarse concentrate and a large amount of tailing, which was considered sufficiently low-grade to be rejected. However, developments and improvements in concentration processes are everywhere changing the low-grade tailing of yesterday into material worth retreating today. Investigations of the work of the Hancock jig on the Bonne Terre ore- have shown that the best results to be expected will give a tailing assaying 0.75 per cent. lead; the average over all conditions and grades of ore will be between .0.80 and 0.90 per cent. By crushing the jig tailings in ball-mills and retreating by tables and flotation, a tailing of considerably lower grade can be made; the problem then becomes an economic one of increased crushing costs versus higher recovery. In considering the entire elimination of jigging, the increased smelting charges; due to a greater amount of slime galena will be counterbalanced by the lower operating cost, in-creased recovery, and the many advantages of a simpler flow sheet. In developing these problems in the Bonne Terre mill of the&apos; St. Joseph Lead Co., a long series of tests has been carried out covering every stage of crushing and concentration, and a large number of possible flow sheets were considered and tried. Only the final results and a few comparisons will be given here. At the same time, a careful and detailed cost-keeping system has enabled us to compare milling costs with the various flow sheets, and to calculate the economics of the problem&apos; with great accuracy. .

This report documents the process of site selection, instrument installation, data acquisition, and preliminary data analysis followed to characterize the physical response of overlying strata to longwall mining. A system of surface, subsurface and mine level instrumentation was installed at the Allen Mine in Weston, Colorado where the overburden varied in thickness from 600 to 900 feet. Survey monuments, automatic-recording strain-meters, multi-point rod extensometers, inclinometer-extensometers, stressmeters and tape extensometer convergence stations were installed to monitor displacements and stress changes. A preliminary analysis of the data acquired up until project termination has shown the system to be operative and strata response to be similar to that reported for other subsidence monitoring case histories. Recommendations for continued monitoring of the instrumentation systems are presented.

As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

"Quantitative information about the quality of metal balance results is often overlooked when making important plant production planning decisions. Not only is this common omission made in a context where many measurements taken in and around mineral processing plants carry significant errors, but it also conflicts with the AMIRA P754 Code of Practice for Metal Accounting. The fact that metal balances are typically published without any indication of data quality may give the wrong impression that the measurements are unquestionably accurate. While it is true that statistical data reconciliation can improve the confidence intervals of redundant variables, there is no data processing technique that brings them down to zero at a finite cost. In this paper, we review the entire data flow, starting from field instruments to metal accounting-based decision-making to show how measurement errors are transmuted into business risks associated with production planning. Necessary conditions for first exposing then quantifying such business risks are stated. Pitfalls to be avoided are also discussed. Finally, a simplified risk assessment and management procedure which considers the quality of metal balance results are applied to a polymetallic mineral processing plant. INTRODUCTION Each and every mineral processing plant has production reporting obligations. In this paper, we are concerned with metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where saleable metal flows and inventories are estimated and published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimisation, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that spotless metal accounting is instrumental to high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard et al., 2014) of mining and metallurgical companies. To this extent, one would have expected industry-endorsed standards to have emerged a long time ago. However, the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting was explicitly recognized as an industry-wide problem only in August 2001 during an SAIMM workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa. Discussions that followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, “Metal Accounting and Reconciliation”, in 2003."

Regional metallogenic zones and areas of equal paragenetic range have been interpreted from a compiled metallogenic map. of Mexico. Mineralization gradients of the pattern subsequently identified extend inland from coastal zones of high-temperature mineralization, and join in a central longitudinal zone of relatively low-temperature mineralization, apparently leaving no zonal room for lowest temperature deposits. The striking regional zoning pattern can be correlated with regional deformation gradients of similar position and orientation. The gradients represent at least three major orogenic cycles in two structural belts. Paleozoic structural belts existed along each coast with deformation gradients diminishing inland toward a narrow, central peninsular craton. The Mesozoic-Tertiary Mexican (Cordilleran) belt covered the entire country with a gradient oriented toward the Gulf of Mexico. Most ore deposits in this belt are of Tertiary age, although Tertiary mineralization gradients seem to have "inherited" the pattern left by Paleozoic tectonic gradients. Mineralization gradients can be used to identify the regions most favorable for the occurrence of selected metals. A metallogenic province is characterized by particular proportions of various metals, and the relative proportions can vary from province to province; but within any province the same intensity of mineralization would produce similar deposits in different places. Declining intensity of minetalization produces different kinds and sizes of deposits in zones that are concentrically arranged around sites of strongest rock alteration. On a regional basis, districts of similar average intensity of mineralization occur in zones that generally parallel some tectonic grain with the result that tectonic deformation has been designated a principal cause of mineralization. Variations in the type and intensity of deformation would determine the type as well as size of metal deposits. Mexico is especially favorable for such a study be- cause of its great abundance and variety of epi-genetic mineral deposits in various lithologic, structural and tectonic environments. The concept is also useful in recognizing portions of Mexico favorable for the occurrence of specific metals. METALLOTECTONIC ZONING IN MEXICO Theory: In studies of individual districts and groups of districts throughout North and South America, areal zoning of metal deposits generally seemed to respond to the paragenetic sequence of iron, gold, copper, zinc, lead, silver, antimony and arsenic, gold and fluorite. However, the definition of district zones is greatly obscured by contemporaneous or rhythmic deposition of metals, especially in the middle of the paragenetic range, and by the common superimposi-tions of different generations of metals. Zones could usually be distinguished only for groups of metals, such as early precious metals, base-metal sulfides, sulfosalts and late precious metals. The best defined zoning in a district is normally the spatial separation of the greatest volumes of altered and metallized rocks.&apos; Exceptions are districts representing the high- and low-temperature extremes of the mineralization range where the former creates a matrix for the latter. In most districts the total quantity of alteration products is greatly in excess of, and appears to be roughly proportional to, the total quantity of metallization products. Subsequent to the bicomponent nature of each district, the most important mineralogical feature is the great excess of one to several metals or minerals which results in a district identifiable as one of predominantly gold, copper, lead-zinc, fluorite, etc., although a great variety of other elements may be present. The para-genetic range for the abundant elements in any district is only a portion of the entire possible range for all the elements representing the complete process throughout the region. Early during investigations of this type, it became apparent that the consistent bicomponent character of districts allows two methods for studying epi-genetic mineralization patterns. Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

AUSTENITE grain size has long been recognized by metallurgists as an important property of steels because of its influence on toughness, hardenability, machinability and creep strength. Much research has been carried out on wrought steels to develop methods for disclosing austenite grain size, and to provide knowledge of the grain-size -characteristics of steels produced and heat-treated in various ways. Much less work in these fields has been done on steel castings; partly because, owing to the variable and complex microstructures of cast steels, it is frequently very difficult to obtain results that are not questionable. The object of this investigation, therefore, was to establish, for a wide variety of carbon and alloy cast steels, suitable methods for disclosing austenite grain size and some knowledge of the grain-size variations to be expected. The steel foundryman is interested in austenite grain size at two different stages in the manufacture of his products; one is just after the steel is cast, and the other is after any reheating operation carried out above the critical temperature range. In both, it must always be kept in mind that the grain size being sought is actually a previous austenite grain size, and that the austenite no longer exists once the steel has cooled to room temperature. The problem of the investigator is always to use evidence obtained from the structure at room temperature to deduce this previous austenite grain size, which was established the last time the steel existed at a temperature above the critical range. Since most steel castings today are at least annealed or normalized, the measurement of austenite grain size established by heat-treatment will be considered first. More than So commercially produced cast steels representing a wide variety of compositions and melting practices were used in the study. For each steel, grain-size determinations were made after each of three widely varying heat-treating schedules; namely, one hour at 1550°F, one hour at 1700°F, and six hours at 1700°F. The list of steels and results obtained on them will be found in the appendix. (See page 21.) A discussion of the knowledge gained on the applicability of various test methods and on grain-size characteristics of cast steels in general follows. The recovery of manganese from lower grade resources has been studied for a number of years. Of key importance of prior work, was the discovery that higher valent manganese resource can be readily leached with sulfurous acid. This eliminates the need for high temperature reduction roasting that is conventionally used in processing high grade material. High temperature roasting is energy intensive, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide, and would not be economical for processing lower grade material. While the prior work provides important information to extract manganese from lower grade resources, the production of unwanted by-products, and high water and energy usage has limited its commercial use. This paper describes the results from laboratory work that demonstrate solutions to problems, which to this point preclude commercial development. Preliminary mass and energy balances show that a significant opportunity exists in producing manganese with this hydrometallurgical scheme in a low cost, environmentally friendly manner. Emphasis of the work is on low water use, low overall energy use and economic destruction of unwanted by-products.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines collected and analyzed overcore measurements and other indicators of in situ stress characteristics at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. An analysis of these data revealed that significant local variations in in situ stress are present in this mine and that these variations existed prior to mining. High stresses were found to be associated with the most competent strata and a locked section of a fault. An estimate of the predominant stress field was developed for mine-wide modeling. The estimate shows that the greatest principal stress was oriented north of northwest. This information should provide a basis for mine-wide structural modeling of the Lucky Friday Mine and should generate important insights into localized stress conditions, which may significantly affect both local and mine-to-mine variations in seismicity induced by excavation.

This paper presents the results of an extensive study concerning a series of roof falls in a room-and-pillar coal mine located in West Virginia. Three dimensional finite element modeling was employed to identify the possible causes for the roof falls. The effectiveness of possible roof control measures for alleviating or eliminating the adverse roof conditions is analyzed, discussed, and compared. The best mining alternatives are recommended. It has been found that large overburden depth and typical roof geology are the major reasons for the roof falls. Angle bolting may not solve the problem encountered in the mine studied. Changing the mine layout currently used in the mine appears to be the best alternative.
