"The initial development of the massive potash deposits of the prairie evaporite formation took place over a decade ending in 1970. The potash mining and refining facility near Rocanvi11e, Saskatchewan was the 1ast of ten mines to come into production during that era. This operation, known as Sylvite of Canada Ltd., was designed to produce 1. 2 million short tons per year of KCl product in granular, coarse, standard and special standard grades.In 1977 the parent company, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, sold the Sylvite property to the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. Shortly thereafter PCS slated its new Rocanville Division for a two phase program of expansion. The first phase, completed in the spring of 1979, was relatively small, involving mill debottlenecking and additional equipment in the compaction circuit and the product and ore storage areas. The second phase was a major undertaking which included additional mining equipment and a new 300 STPH milling circuit. This work was completed during the fall of 1981 and has increased the Rocanville Division's nameplate capacity to two million STPY.Thickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated and heated structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to ensure good flotation circuit performance. Since these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 150 feet in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a Lamella™ Thickener and one other type of 'High Rate' thickener* as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project."

Wire saws have been used for many years in European travertine, marble, and slate quarries. This method of sawing found very limited use in America until 1927 when it was accepted as standard equipment in elate quarries in Pennsylvania where it has been remarkably successful. Details of its operation in slate have been published in a recent bureau report.3 The very limited extent to which the wire saw has been employed in limestone and marble quarries in the United States and the seeming lack of interest even in experimental work to determine its advantages are difficult to explain in vied of its wide use in cutting similar rocks in Europe and its unquestionable advantages in sewing slate in America. In order to encourage improvement in quarry practice the United States Bureau of Mines has endeavored to obtain information as to the extent to which wire saws are used in Europe together with data on the rate and cost of sawing. The information at hand is by no means complete either in territory covered or in details of operation; it nevertheless brings out certain significant features that may be of interest and advantage to quarrymen in the United States.

Coal mining companies in Australia are managing the high-consequence risks across their operations more effectively by using an interactive online risk management system known as Riskgate Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, Australia, Riskgate contains detailed information about 11 high-consequence risk areas (called topics in the system) for opencut and underground coal mines (Table 1). The existing topics are: fires; strata control for underground mining; ground control for opencut mining; tires; isolation; collisions; explosions and explosives; manual tasks; and trips, slips and falls. Every Riskgate topic is focused on coal industry activities (mining, processing, transport and storage). The scope includes mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure (mobile, fixed plant, field equipment, buildings, road and rail transport), and all aspects of the mine life cycle from design through to decommissioning. The topics uniformly recognize that a loss of control can result in injury or fatality, equipment damage, production loss, reputation loss and environmental damage. However, the priority focus for Riskgate is the safety of mine personnel.

Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

The grade control process undertaken at mines aims to maximise the value of the ore (valuable product) mined and fed downstream for processing or sale. The full range of grade control activities includes: reserve estimating, drilling/sampling, assaying, modelling, ore block design, blasting, ore mark out, excavating, stockpiling, processing and reconciling. Over the last 25 years, the grade control process has undergone significant improvements and this is in part due to the developments in grade control blasting. This paper discusses the development and classification of grade control blasting applications in surface mining. A review by the author in 1988 (Little and van Rooyen, 1988) is used as a benchmark for discussing the very significant progress that has been made.Two major technology initiatives have enabled this development. The first was the development of a method for the measurement and analysis of total displacement during the blasting process. Currently, the Blast Movement Monitor (BMM®) is a practical tool that has been used around the world to improve the industry’s understanding of three-dimensional blast movement dynamics. The second technological enabler was the development of electronic detonator systems. The unique aspects of electronic detonating systems are their higher accuracy and that all detonators are activated at time zero (initiation). From a grade control blasting perspective these features and other improvements allow experimentation and, ultimately, more complex, multiobjective blasts to be designed and implemented.This paper reports on a classification and review study undertaken by the author. In all, five selective blasting methods and nine bulk blasting methods are classified and reviewed. Five important observations are made: there is value in classifying the range of grade control blasting strategies, and the blasting objective framework presented is helpful in this regard the range of strategies available to designers is increasing as enabling technology develops, so too do the ambitions of blast designers and the expectations of downstream customersgrade control blasting and Mine to Mill concepts are merging, and this paper caters for this trend using multiple blasting objectiveshaving a technical primary blasting objectives framework, combined with the classification system presented here, should assist practitioners and stakeholders with lateral thinking in regards to future technological innovations, grade control blasting and Mine to Mill initiatives.CITATION:Little, T N, 2015. WITH the gradual exhaustion of the upper veins in the anthracite coal-fields, the problem of mining at greater depths acquires increasing importance and demands the consideration of a number of important factors, one of which is the greater earth-pressure and the consequent necessity of stronger support o for the roof. Under the pillar-and-chamber system, almost exclusively followed in the Northern anthracite-field, the highest economy in mining is generally secured by leaving, on first mining, pillars only sufficient to support safely the overlying strata. As to the necessary size of such pillars, the opinions of mining experts are widely divergent. In establishing the width of chambers and pillars, the thickness of vein and its depth below the surface have received little consideration. For. instance, it has been quite usual to work both overlying and underlying veins with the same width of chambers and pillars, when the lower vein was two and one-half times as thick, and twice as fits below the surface, as the upper. In view of the generally-accepted theory that the crushing-strength of coal-pillars of the same base-area becomes less with increased height, it is probable, in this instance at least, that the most economical mining has not been secured. This question of adequate pillar-support is economically less important down to about 800 ft. than at greater depths; and it is with reference to mining at these greater depths that the study of the subject here presented has been prompted. The necessity of leaving larger pillars, involving greater mining-costs per ton and also smaller yields per acre, is one of the troubles of deep working. This subject is too broad and comprehensive to be dealt with adequately and authoritatively in this paper. It calls for the knowledge and experience of many men, but the results from such collaborative effort would be of great value, particularly if similar reports of the principal mining districts of the world were made on a standardized basis so that conditions everywhere might be directly and accurately compared. In considering conditions affecting mining in British Columbia, unfavourable as well as favourable factors must be taken into account. The unfavourable are apt to loom large and to be exaggerated rather than minimized; for it is human nature to see the blackness of the cloud rather than the silver lining; to think that one's own undertaking is beset with peculiar difficulties, and to attribute lack of greater success to out-side causes rather than to personal shortcomings. It should be recognized, however, that there is no country where the conditions for mining are ideal. The ideal mining country is the product of imagination, invested with every favourable condition found anywhere, but with none of the unfavourable conditions that are always present in reality. So if British Columbia has some handicaps to the industry, it is in good company. What is important is that the advantages compensate for the disadvantages, that the balance will compare favorably with that of competing states, for mining, like every other industry is competitive, and the cost of one's product must have a definite relationship to its price in the world's market.

"IntroductionIn respect to The Human Dimension by M. Phyllis Bray, this author's impression is that research on long distance commuting (LDC) is long overdue. This type of mining is not new to many workers, especially those from areas such as the Maritimes, who have had to look for work away from their families for at least a decade. Perhaps to the industry the over-all set-up is new, but to workers who have faced mine shut-downs in their areas finding a job was the main objective and if the security of long-term employment was evident, then the families might join them later. This was the situation with which the writer' s family was faced.LDC LifestyleBeing the wife of an underground miner, the author has personally experienced this lifestyle for almost 10 years, and has never experienced accommodation in a company town. The first five years of marriage were spent in a small rural municipality within 50 miles of the worksite, but the town had industry separate from mining and was not affected by the mine shut-down.Since her LDC lifestyle began her family has been pretty much city-based, out-of-province commuters with two children and a third to arrive some years later. She therefore lived a fairly normal married life with a husband home daily. The author has experienced life with a husband who worked away for five-day stretches and then drove long distances to be home weekends or the portion of time left over from driving and fatigue. She has done the 3D-days in/l4-days out routine, and for approximately the past four years has been existing on a two-weeks in/two-weeks out ritual .The author does not agree that the ""bottom line is that mining families go where the jobs are"" . The miners go where the jobs are and the families fend for themselves with the assistance of the pay cheque making it home each pay period.Perhaps because there are many personal frustrations with this type of lifestyle, perceptions may be inaccurate. Having only dealt with underground operations, there may be gross differences between the pressures and demands of other forms of mining."

This paper presents a research project referring to the stability of submerged walls of open pit mines and the actual state of development. Obviously the slope stability analysis is always a rather complex problem, because it is difficult to reduce the problem to a design scheme and to define the available in situ soil strength. Especially the design of submerged slopes represents a problem. The state-of-the-art slope stability analysis is based on a simplified modelling of slope failure and soil behaviour and with this predicted stable slope inclinations of sand slopes below water-table are less then half the angle of internal friction. Slope angles calculated like that canÆt satisfy the mining companies. One of the problems that have to be solved is the reliable determination of the long-term stability of non-cohesive, submerged slopes, which is not only dependant on geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters of the subsoil, but is also significantly influenced by how the slopes are made. The research project points at the relations between mining and geotechnical engineering with the main aim to find a more suitable stability analysis which takes both soil behaviour and mining influences into account.

Pyrite ore is one of the main raw materials in the production of sulfuric acid. For a long time, the raw material containing the pyrite, which is used to produce sulfuric acid, generally contains S only 32%~45%. A plenty of residue from the sulfuric acid production contains 40%~50% Fe and 1%~2% S. Some of the residue also contains Cu, Pb, Zn and other harmful elements like As, thus it pollutes environment seriously and is solid waste. The research on comprehensive utilization of the residue has been made by many scholars. Through the study, the residue can only be used to pro-duce iron concentrate and the iron oxide red pigment. But because of the complex techniques, the low recovery, the low grade of iron concentrate , high sulfur in iron concentrate, causing second waste residue and the environmental pollution, the residue is mainly used as an accessory material in the production of cement, and is of a low value. Therefore, the iron resource in pyrite has not been used efficiently until now. In the paper, the flotation condition test, the flotation open circuit test and the flotation closed circuit test to produce high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore in oceanic ore deposit have been carried on. Flotation reagent scheme of sulfuric acid used as activator and butyl xanthate as collector is determined. After four times depth cleaning, high-purity pyrite concentrate containing 52.82% S, 44.29% Fe, and only 2.89% impurities has been obtained. The S recovery is 99.13%, and the Fe recovery is 96.00% in the high-purity pyrite concentrate. The oxidizing roasting depth desulfurization experiment of the high-purity pyrite concentrate has been conducted. The results show that the Fe grade in the residue obtained is 68.58%, the content of S is 0.25%, the content of P is 0.0084%, the content of As is 0.0065%. The residue is a kind of high-quality iron-smelting raw material. Based on the above experiments, the industrial experiments on producing high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore, and producing sulfuric acid and iron concentrate with high-purity pyrite concentrate have been done. The results indicate that the high-purity pyrite concentrate with the S grade of 51.24%, the Fe grade of 44.15% has been obtained. The iron concentrate obtained with 65.73% Fe and 0.23% S is a sort of high-quality iron-smelting raw material applied to the production of steel and iron smelting. Through the experimental study, the sulfur and iron resources in the pyrite ore have been recovered and utilized efficiently.

South Africa’s best-quality coal, located in the central Highveld basin, is becoming depleted and alternative sources of coal, such as the Waterberg coalfield, will have to be developed to supply the country with coal in the future. The quality of the coal being mined in the central basin is gradually becoming poorer. This necessitates that more of the coal be processed to improve the quality to meet customer requirements. The challenge to the coal processing industry is to process low-yielding coals to produce goodquality products and at the same time ensure that coal mining remains economically viable. This requires that more cost-effective coal processing technologies be investigated and implemented.

The Australian mining industry, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, is on a journey towards greater equity and inclusion. Th paper introduces a comprehensive exploration of how universal design principles, stemming from architectural roots, have evolved through automation and digital technology into the more encompassing frameworks of inclusive design and equitable design. The paper proposes a practical framework for those involved in work, facilities and equipment design in the mining industry to identify and assess for equity and inclusion. Universal Design emerged in the 1960s with a primary focus on architecture, aiming to create spaces accessible to people of all abilities. Its foundational principles sought to ensure equitable use, flexibility, simplicity, perceptibility, tolerance for error, low physical effort and optimal spatial considerations. Over time, these principles evolved and expanded beyond physical spaces, finding applications in various fields, including technology, education and transportation. In response to advancements in technology and a growing understanding of the multifaceted nature of diversity, Universal Design evolved into Inclusive Design. Inclusive Design goes further than mere accessibility, considering a broader spectrum of users with varying cognitive, sensory, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. It emphasises user centred design, customisation options, diverse user research and continuous iteration. Equitable Design emerged as a framework that addresses not only the diversity of needs but also systemic disparities. It emphasises fairness, justice and the elimination of structural inequities. Equitable Design encompasses accessibility and affordability, representation and diversity, ethical considerations and community engagement. This paper will explore the applications of these design principles through a series of case studies including village and on-site facilities, remote operations and office based work design and technology design. By applying these frameworks in a mining context, the paper proposes that mining companies and suppliers can improve diversity, equity and inclusion leading to safer, more engaged and productive workplaces.

The Carol concentrator of the Iron Ore Company of Canada was completed in 1962 and through expansions .has become one of the largest iron ore beneficiation plants in the world with a new feed capacity of 147,000 It (149,350 mt) per day. The Carol ore contains specular hematite and magnetite having a bulk density of 166 lb/cu ft (2660 kg/m3) It is crushed to 7 in. (178 mm) for feeding to autogenous mills for subsequent concentration by Humphrey’s s spirals. Mine ore is loaded into 150 It (152 mt) trucks by 10 cu yd (7.65 m3) shovels and then, at a transfer station, is loaded into side-dump rail cars of 100 It (101.6 mt) capacity. Each train is composed of twenty cars and operates completely automatically as it hauls the ore to the primary crushing station, dumps its loads, and returns to the loading station, a 11.5 mile (18.5 km) round trip. The primary crushing station is composed of two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories installed in 1962 and 1972. Neither crusher has a grizzly ahead of it. Rail cars are dumped into 300 It (305 mt) pockets which contain splitters for spider protection. What few oversize boulders which do not go through the crushers are drilled and blasted. Liners in the dump pocket and the crushed ore pokcet under the crusher are manganese steel. Both crushers are direct driven by 700 hp (5 15 kw) motors, and the hardness of the ore causes them to pull almost their full power. Crushed ore drops into a 160 It (163 mt) pocket equipped with radioactive level control units for low-intermediate, and high level indications. The low level unit stops and starts the apron feeder, the intermediate unit controls the feeder speed, and a high-level reading stops the car dumping. Apron feeders are 72 in. (1. 82 m) wide and are variable speed from 12 to 52 fpm (3. 7 to 15. 8 mpm). They discharge to 60 in. (1.52 m) wide takeaway belts. Crushing capacity, nominal and maximum for each crusher, is 4, 000 ltph (4. 064 mtph) and 4,600 ltph (4,674 mtph). The crusher eccentric is removed by a conventional cart which travels on removable rails. Mainshaft removal and maintenance is done by 65 and 75/10 ton cranes. Mainshaft replacement requires eight hours, a usual time, but concave replacement requires only sixteen hours, a result of a fine maintenance organization. Mantle relining is done at grade next to a repair track. Zinc is used for backing both mantles and concaves. Both the electrical rooms and the dust collectors are located below grade,

To the industrial geologist, as wen as to the general or historic geologist, the possession of a reliable key to the true order or sequence of the stratigraphy or position of the various upper rocky envelopes of the earth's crust, is, equally, a desideratum of the utmost importance. Of similar value to the two groups of students is the possession of facts which throw light upon the relationships which subsist between the puccessive rock formation of different countries, especially between countries lying close to each other, or within the same great geographical division.But there is necessarily a fundamental distinction which marks the respective limits of the field of observations of the industrial geologist, and the purely historic interest of the general geologist. The former has a more definite though less extensive scope. The scope of the latter is wide and indeterminate. In short, the observations of the industrial geologist are, 'from a commercial or economic point of view, of a more practical character, and are, therefore, intentionally restricted to the study of all geological questions which throw light upon the rocks which yield products of economic value and only include the study of the character and history of other rocks, in so far, as they afford aid to the more perfect comprehension of the best manner in which materials of economic value are likely to be sought, and the best means whereby these products may be secured for the material advantage of the community. The motive of the general geologist-in most cases-is a love of the study of some particular branch or province of the geological field, and the fascination of opening a new volume in nature's library, and the hope of extending the realm of knowledge, however slight, are often sufficient, as a motive, to enlist the energy and life's devotion of the true brethren of the hammer, irrespective of considerations regarding the commercial utility of the pursuit.

The Bureau of Mines devised and demonstrated a portable linear cutting tester that directly measures and records the in situ cutting forces required of continuous-mining machine picks to it coal in underground mines. It requires only two operators to transport and operate the tester, which can be assembled and operated through a complete test cycle within a single mine work shift. This report reviews the factors considered in the design and development of the tester and the results of its system verification testing at coal mine sites.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

Minnesota is a major mining state. This statement is not a dream or stretch goal but is a fact. As reported in a recent edition of Mining Engineering magazine, Minnesota ranks as the third largest state in terms revenues generated from nonfuels mineral production. The vibrancy of the mining sector in Minnesota can be attributed to several factors. The northeastern corner of the state is home to Minnesota?s iron range, one of North America?s largest deposits of iron ore. Iron ore from Minnesota is a strategic resource that has been [ ] instrumental to the nation?s development ? 90 percent of the iron used to build ships and planes during World War II came from Minnesota. Taconite pellets now produced from openpit mines on the iron range are shipped to steel mills worldwide. The growing appetite for steel in China and India has reignited once moribund mining operations throughout the iron range.

The labor force is of central importance. Its added value ought to be ensured. It is necessary to move away from the employees‘ hazard awareness towards a safety awareness including many other aspects in order to save costs in the long run.

INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%.
