The most important development in connection with the search for oil in Australia during 1940 was on the legislative side. Prior to 1939 legislative enactments in the various states with regard to prospecting for petroleum were such as to prohibit large-scale effort and to bar the major oil companies from operating. The preparation of the Wade Model Bill for the Commonwealth Government in 1939 and the acceptance of the Bill in principle by all States, has gone far to remove these obstacles. Amending Acts, largely based on the Alodel Bill, have now been passed by all States with the exception of New South Wales and Tasmania. In New South Wales an Amending Bill is being drafted, while the Govern-ment of Tasmania is preparing to introduce an Amending Bill provided there is any demand for it. Noteworthy developments followed immediately on the passing of these Amending Acts. The Shell Company (1)1 and the Superior Oil Company of California (2) too$ up large areas in Queensland and com-menced work during 1940. Caltex acquired a big tract of country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia (3) and has made application for an area in the Territory of Papua. An Australian company, The Phoenix Oil Extraction Co., has obtained a permit to prospect over an extensive area bordering the south coast of Western Australia (4). Other developments are foreshadowed. The Shell Company is making an intensive examination of its area in Queensland (I). Geological, geophysical and aerial surveys are in progress. Caltex has three geological parties in the held in Western Australia while Superior Oil Company of California has done some geological work in the interior of Queensland (2). None of these concerns envisages a drilling campaign in the near future. Much exploratory work is necessary. Further work has been done by the companies that were already operating in 1939, though an important Australian company - Oil Search—has abandoned the work of prospecting in Australia. This company has subleased its holdings, at North West Cape in Western Australia (;), to Caltex on a royalty basis. The company also maintains its holdings in, and connection with, the Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited, which is a combination of Standard Oil (New Jersey), Anglo-Iranian and Oil Search. This company is operating in the territories of Papua and New Guinea. Drilling Victoria.—Although a good deal of drilling was done in the LaBes Entrance Tertiary Basin of Victoria (7), no appreciable production of oil was obtained. In order to test the extent and possibilities of the oil-bearing sand in this region, the Commonwealth and State Governments jointly put down six scout boreholes to depths of between 1200 and I500 it. "In this research, image analysis technique, Kuz-Ram and KCO Models were used to examineefficiency of the quarry blasts. Investigations were performed in Cendere region, Istanbul. As a firststep, image analysis software was used to determine particle size distribution of muckpiles.Additionally, the results of KuzRam and KCO fragmentation models were compared to the results ofthe image analysis technique. The efficiency of KuzRam and KCO models was investigated and theimportant points to be considered were explained. Additionally, the effect of the rock factor valueson the size distribution curves was investigated. The blasthole diameter is 89 mm. (3.5 in) in thestudied quarry. Each measured blast has a different burden, spacing and stemming length. Blastholes was drilled in a staggered pattern. It is concluded that, KuzRam and KCO models can be successfully used to determine fragment size distribution in Cendere Region Quarries, Istanbul. Site engineers can predict blast fragmentation using the theoretical fragmentation models and they may change blast design parameters before blasting operation if necessary. It is possible to calibrate the Kuz-Ram and KCO fragmentation models using the measurements obtained by image analysis technique."

Predicting rockmass permeability is critical in evaluating various engineering designs, including estimating gas inflow to a longwall mine in the case of a hypothetical breach in the gas well. This study conducted field permeability measurements to validate a geomechanical model capable of predicting rockmass permeability during longwall mining. A series of slug permeability tests were conducted in an active mine in Pennsylvania. A model of the mine was constructed in 3DEC numerical modeling software, and permeabilities were calculated. The modeling results agreed well with the pre- and post-mining permeability measurements, showing the applicability of this tool to evaluate gas well stability near mine workings.

The word "research" has been used in the title of my presentation somewhat against my better judgement. There are many definitions of the word. But the one I like best comes from Webster's New World Dictionary. It reads: "Careful, systematic, patient study and investigation in some field of knowledge, undertaken to discover or establish facts or principles. ..." I like that. In only 9 words, the definition conveys to me the very essence of what should be going on either in or for the coal industry. Unfortunately, not enough coal-related research is going on. And much of what is being done is, in my view, not really as effective as it might be.

When I was first asked to give a paper on work-life balance in the mining industry I was both excited and aware of the incongruity of my position. I have never worked in mining operations nor have I had any experience that approximates the on-site lifestyle. IÆm not really an adventurer or a traveller, I prefer writing and research to hands-on activities and IÆve never worked further than twenty minutes away from home. The perspective I offer is thus largely an objective one. I say largely since I grew up in a family where my parents work arrangements involved long-distance commuting; my dad continues to work FIFO at a coalmine in Blackwater until this day. Perhaps my tortoise-like existence is a rebellion against his flighty movements. The analysis I will be presenting today draws together a variety of sources, from member anecdotes and research on FIFO and work-life balance to the popular philosophy writings of a bald Englishman with a French name. I am speaking of the famous writer, Alain de Botton, whose television show æThe Consolations of PhilosophyÆ you may have seen on the ABC. Work-life balance is a term that gets a lot of mileage in corporate brochures and at breakfast seminars. But like many terms that get bandied around in the human resources circuit, from æteam synergyÆ to æperformance optimisationÆ, I am frequently perplexed as to what it actually means. Corporate websites are at pains to emphasise the high priority that they place on the needs of the whole person. Yet in terms of substantive content, a commitment to work-life balance often seems to translate into little more than the option to take a few morning yoga classes in exchange for working a seventy-hour week. As extended work hours have taken their toll, leading to high attrition of professionals across all industries, employers are increasingly expending resources to discover just what lies behind this buzz word. The challenge for companies is to find meaningful strategies to help employees better integrate different aspects of their lives in a new era of work, as employees are sending the message that they are not willing to play work, social life and leisure off against each other in a zero sum game.

Optimising the configuration of infill drill holes is an important step during mineral exploration campaigns. However, this optimisation process encompassing all possible drilling configurations within a mineral deposit is highly combinatorial and hard to solve in a reasonable time. This paper proposes using spatial clustering algorithms to divide the orebody into contiguous zones and target the best zones with infill drilling in order to reduce the size of this optimisation problem. Several clustering algorithms are assessed in a spatial context on hypothetical datasets. This evaluation shows that the hierarchical density-based spatial clustering application with noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm can be used in combination with the uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) dimensionality reduction algorithm to identify contiguous zones in the orebody.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1983, 12 companies operated 27 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 4 firms accounting for 65% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 35% of the production; Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia 35%; Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina 14%; other central States 16%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1983 was valued at over $5.7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 37% of domestic consumption in 1983, transportation 19%, building 17%, electrical 9%, consumer durables 8%, and other uses 10%.

The importance of the accurate determination and interpretation of the bulk density and porosity of a given iron ore deposit is very often disregarded or neglected. Large amounts of time and money are spent on delineating and testing orebodies, and yet one of the most important factors in resource evaluation is sometimes estimated or, at best, determined from existing data from similar deposits. The Thabazimbi and Sishen South iron ore deposits are two well-known economical occurrences of high-grade iron ore in South Africa. Both these deposits formed as secondary enrichment of banded iron formation lithologies. Ongoing density studies on both these deposits are underway and results thus far proved very effective and necessary. Small-scale methods are used to determine average values for different ore types on both deposits. These values are used in resource estimation and geophysical interpretation.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

Part I describes the general geology of the Florida deposits. As the lucrative Bone Valley Formation is depleted, replacement production will move progressively into areas of total Hawthorn production. The reserves of the immediate future are a mixture of two distinct ore types referred to as the upper (high grade) zone and the lower (low grade) zone. The upper zone is somewhat similar to the Bone Valley Formation that has been Florida's source of production for the past 100 years and will respond favorably to present beneficiation practices. By contrast, the lower zone ore contains significant quantities of dolomite that must be removed in order to produce an acceptable grade pebble or flotation sized product. Part II reviews past practice and describes future trends in mining and ore transportation. This presentation (Part III) is confined to the problems of beneficiation, waste disposal, and environmental regulation.

"Miners worldwide use a tremendous amount of energy in producing finished minerals for the end user market. In accomplishing this goal, they incur energy costs that can range from 20% to 30% of the total cost of production, so there is fertile ground for cost savings. To unlock this huge value in cost reduction, energy analysis is the key and is broken into several segments: 1. Fuel analysis for power generation 2. Energy supply & demand 3. Opportunity cost for lack of power 4. Backup power 5. Power contracts 6. Energy efficiency 7. Renewable energy 8. Continuous energy management FUEL ANALYSIS FOR POWER GENERATION What is the first thing we evaluate when looking at power supply alternatives for the mining industry’s large power requirements? Is it 1) site, 2) engineering, procurement, and construction companies, 3) independent power producers, 4) turbine vendors, 5) grid connections, or 6) fuel supply, logistics, and infrastructure? In evaluations of power supply alternatives for mining companies with special emphasis in developing countries, there is one over-riding conclusion: reliable fuel supply drives the energy generation economic engine. Evaluating several different fuels including liquefied natural gas (LNG), natural gas, diesel, heavy fuel oil, and liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) among others, the best project outcomes are those where fuel supply, pricing, logistics, and infrastructure are given an extensive amount of time during the analysis stage. In an assessment of the twenty-year costs of generating power from multiple fuels, each fuel’s costs were placed into three separate net present value (NPV) buckets of: 1) capital, 2) operating and maintenance, and 3) fuel. Within a range of 65% to 85% for all fuels, fuel cost was the largest component of the NPV of the life cycle power generation costs. So if 65% to 85% of your life cycle power generation cost is one item, shouldn’t miners spend a corresponding amount of time in the analysis stage fully understanding this key determinant for a successful power project? In developing countries where power generation infrastructure may not exist or does not exist at the same level as is found in North America and Europe, fuel analysis becomes even more important. One of the key questions for fuel importation in developing countries is the draft at existing ports to allow larger vessels to dock at the jetty. Can larger ocean-going tankers dock at the port for off-loading, or is the port’s draft too shallow, thus forcing a Single Point Mooring (SPM) system or Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) system to be constructed at substantial capital expense? Once fuel can be imported, sufficient onshore storage capacity should exist, or must be built to off-load the entire fuel cargo from the larger ships. Additionally, the throughput capacity of the pipeline from SPM/CBM must allow a rapid unloading of the fuel from ship to shore to eliminate steep demurrage costs for the project."

Over a recent 20-month observation period, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained seismogram records from a single vertical-component, short-period seismometer installed at the surface of a metal mine in northern Idaho. The seismic events were analyzed for local (Richter) magnitude (M), time of occurrence, location, and relation to rock bursting and production blasting. Approximately 150 seismic events with -0.5 = M = 2.9 were located within the mine, yielding a b value (slope of the logarithm of the number of events with magnitude greater than M versus M) of 0.5. Event locations were constrained using a dense underground array of high-frequency accelerometers. Twenty of the surface-recorded events, with 0.5 = M = 2.9, were associated with rock bursts that produced damage requiring at least 1/2 day of cleanup and/or repair. Other possibly hazardous rock bursts, with magnitudes as small as -1.1, were numerous but were not associated with significant structural damage. Approximately 60 pct of the seismic events with M > -0.5 and 75 pct of damaging rock bursts occurred within 45 min of blasting. Estimates of characteristic rupture dimensions for rock bursts with -1.1 = M = 2.9, based on a conventional dislocation shear-slip model of failure, range from 3 to 300 m.

Decision theory is the formal theory of the logic of decisions in view of the decision maker's objectives, preferences, I beliefs, and available information, It usually deals with weighty economic problems involving irrevocable (or costly to reverse) decisions. Capital investment planning problems constitute an instance par excellence for application of the decision theory concepts. Decision theory as it is presently conceived has evolved in recent years. At first it concentrated on decisions in the face of total lack of information and on games with intelligent adversaries. The results of these efforts proved theoretically interesting, but practically of little applicability. In the last few years, stress has shifted to the introduction of subjective probabilities and preferences, and the results have been eminently successful in applications both in government and with- in business firms in the resolution of complex problems.

In German underground coal mining mostly arch and some rectangular roadways are used in the development work. Due to its positive results from numerical and physical modeling techniques as well as good underground experiences, the numbers of rectangular roadways has increased significantly. Today the bolt support - independent of its cross-sectional shape - represents an undeniable support element. During the introduction of new bolt techniques a detailed investigation of the rock and support mechanical effectiveness of bolt support in roadways at all operation stages is of basic importance. This effectiveness can be predicted and verified using different simulation techniques. For the planning of rockbolted roadways two supplementary simulation techniques are presented in this paper. By combination of all available planning tools the best result for planning assurance can be achieved. Mine ecological monitoring schemes are often conducted only to address compliance and in some cases do not have the sufficient statistical power or understanding of ecological systems to assess, quantitatively, the meeting of rehabilitation targets or mine impacts. Monitoring schemes for rehabilitation commonly rely on analogue sites or premining baselines (reference sites) to assess whether rehabilitation sites are ecologically similar and thus successfully rehabilitated. In the case of monitoring for mine impacts, if the impacted sites diverge from reference data, the site is considered to be impacted. Fundamental to any monitoring scheme is testing the sampling design to ensure that it can detect these differences if they are present through adequate sample sizes (ie statistical power). However, a good understanding of the ecological system is required to ensure that differences detected are ecologically significant. Modelling ecosystem properties can provide a quantitative understanding of how ecosystems change over time and space, in response to natural environmental variations and thus aid in determining significant ecological differences. Furthermore, modelling methods can be used to predict future ecosystem states. Within the ecological literature, guidelines for robust statistical monitoring designs and modelling methods exist but are not routinely being used in the mining industry. This paper uses simple examples to discuss: problems with current compliance monitoring methods; importance of robust statistical techniques; and how modelling can assist rehabilitation assessment and guide monitoring schemes. The aim of this paper is to describe general monitoring and modelling methods that could be potentially used for mine site monitoring and closure assessment. These methods are often considered by mining companies as an extra expense that provide little practical benefit, and the domain of academia; however, engaging these methods may be more cost-effective in the long-run than conducting untargeted monitoring schemes that give no confidence to regulators on whether rehabilitation criteria have been met. Monazite sand is the only commercial source of cerium, other rare-earth metals and thorium. Although used in rather small quantities, it is essential to many industries. The United Unites is entirely dependent upon British India and Brazil for its supplies. Monazite sand or sand imported under the tariff classification for monazite was shipped to the United States in greater quantities, in 1940 than ever before. About 75 percent of our imports was from British India and most of the remainder from Brazil. If need be, Brazilian production can be expanded to supply all of our essential requirements, and the theater of war expands in the Pacific Brazil may supersede India as the principal source. All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it is every six months or every three years. The inspection frequency depends upon gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection, or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combined Eddy Current Array (ECA) and Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.

"North America has entered a period when greatly increased attention must be given to energy .supply and demand by government, industry and individuals. Such increasing concern about energy will be a long-term phenomenon, accompanied by continuing examination of future resource development and utilization. Those engaged in or associated with mining, a major energy consumer, are likely to experience a variety of problems which are associated with the end of an era of low-cost, virtually unlimited energy supply. Their efforts, furthermore, may be subjected to escalating public and government scrutiny, involvement and control. However, ever-growing recognition of the real and urgent necessity to systematically develop new energy supplies within Canada and the United States will provide unusual challenges and opportunities for those companies and individuals with mining expertise. The vast deposits of coal, tar sands and oil shale provide a relative certainty of supply which only stands to gain in attractive ness with time. In order to benefit from this aspect of certain supply, nevertheless, synthetic fuels will have to be produced at a tolerable cost. This will always require excellent process design and engineering. As synfuels development expands to any significant production level, however, and Jess than ideal reserves are scheduled, the usual geologic-productivity complexities encountered in making ore out of low-value rock will tend to become of prime concern. It is for this reason that the services of experienced mining personnel will be in growing demand in energy production."

Planning for the Macraes Extension project highlighted the need for additional tailings storage availability. The possible solution of developing new tailings impoundments in Northern Gully, in tum, led to concerns being expressed by the regUlatory authority over the assimilative capacity of Deepdell Creek. Philosophical differences over the appropriateness of applying a seepage model used to set standards in consents for the original project resulted in the company re-evaluating the whole monitoring system associated with tailings disposal and seepage control. Re-evaluation indicated problems arising from the existing in-stream water quality monitoring in respect of protection of the aquatic ecological system and verifiability of results. A new monitoring system was designed relocating the compliance monitoring point out of the stream and into the gully containing the tailings impoundments giving greater certainty of monitoring results to all parties and providing improved protection for the aquatic ecology of Deepdell Creek.
