The South Bank Place project comprised the redevelopment of the iconic Shell Corporation headquarters in Waterloo, located on the Southbank of the River Thames in central London. The site was originally developed in the 1950’s and due to the monitoring of the underlying Bakerloo Line tunnels by the Building Research Station it has become a seminal case history for the long term swelling behaviour of London Clay. The redevelopment, undertaken by a joint venture of Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, included demolition of the existing building (with the exception of the main towers) retention of the existing basement structure and the construction of eight new mixed use buildings, up to 31 storeys in height. The foundations for the new buildings varied according to the building height and the below ground constraints. Two of the buildings are partially founded in reused under reamed piles that were installed as part of the original 1950’s development. The paper describes the novel methodology developed to assess the re-use of the under reamed piles which builds on the guidance published by CIRIA and the BRE for straight shafted piles. The paper also describes the physical investigations and numerical analyses undertaken as part of the assurance process and the procurement of latent defect insurance by the client.

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

THE dire effects of rapidly vanishing natural resources, widespread unemployment, and increased debt and taxation in recent years have challenged Canadians to produce a practical solution to these national economic problems. In more recent months, wars and rumours of war have indicated, among other things, the need for better control of our mineral wealth. The erection of a smelter on the lower mainland coast of British Columbia, treating all Western ores, and such ores as it will be found advisable to import, will make an important contribution toward a solution of these problems. It is believed that the ores tributary justify a smelter of major proportions. A stock-taking to confirm this can be made with reason-able accuracy in a short time, and this should be undertaken without delay. Enough general information is, however, available .in this paper to justify the technicians of the Department of Mines at Ottawa and of interested smelting companies making a preliminary study of the matter. THE DEFENCE ARGUMENT As a factor in rearmament, metals play a vital part. That rearmament is to continue on an increasing scale is indicated in Premier Chamberlain's address of October 3rd last, when he said: ?'For a long period now we have been engaged in this country in a great programme of rearmament which is daily increasing in pace and volume. let no one think because we have signed 'this agreement between the four powers at Munich we can afford to relax our efforts or call a halt in our armaments at this moment'. As matters stand, the facilities in British Columbia are entirely out of line with the strategic importance of this Province as the Western Front of Canada and the Empire. All our copper ores, and an appreciable part of our lead and zinc ores, are sent for treatment to Japan, United States, and Europe, while we import our iron and alloys. A treatment plant on this Coast would not only give us control of war metals and chemicals but it would provide an increased industrial and research population, badly needed in this area and of the greatest value in the case of war. This is where the mining industry can do its bit.

Separation of refractory rock phosphate (P2O5 = 11.5%) from the Dalir area, Iran, containing quartz, calcite and other impurities, by calcination and flotation processes has been successfully used to upgrade the phosphate values. Petrographic studies of this ore showed that collophanite was the major phosphate mineral and the main gangue minerals were calcite, dolomite and quartz. The results of characterization studies showed that the liberation degree of apatite occurred below the average grain size of 140 µm. Preliminary flotation tests were used to process the phosphate samples. Results of preliminary flotation tests showed that they don?t contain any desirable efficiency (grade or recovery) of P2O5. Calcination was the best process for preconcentration of this ore. In the desliming stage, about 14.4% of total P2O5 was removed. Encouraging concentrate grades were obtained after flotation with anionic and cationic flotation, successively. The reagent schemes that have been used in this study consisted of COCO-amine acetate and fatty acid as silicate and apatite collectors, respectively, as well as fuel oil and anionic poly acryl amid as promoter collectors. The optimum pH values for direct and reverse flotations of phosphate were 11 and 6, respectively. Experiments conducted using d80=140 µm deslimed fractions has yielded an acceptable grade of more than 30% P2O5 with a recovery of more than 62%. Finally, a laboratory flowsheet for the processing of Dalir refractory phosphate ore has been proposed.

Production forecasts derived from the medium-term schedule represent the best path forward for underground mining operations to achieve corporate and operational goals. Unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment breakdown, can cause significant deviations from established production forecasts in the short term. Such situations require timely mitigation of the effects of the deviations in order to stay as close as possible to the medium-term plan. This paper presents a deterministic mathematical formulation for short-term scheduling that addresses this challenge. The formulation is able to make up for deficits resulting from operational disruptions by minimizing deviations from medium-term production goals and medium-term activity start dates. We demonstrate this in a case study by simulating disruptions involving reduction in ore extraction capacity and development advance rate. Aside from the rescheduling capability, this formulation can help mine planners conduct analysis on the impact of various disruptions on the schedule. The formulation can help identify those conditions or disruptions that are more detrimental to the achievement of forecast targets, or otherwise. The formulation also affords mine planners the flexibility to prioritize one production goal over the other, depending on operational conditions at the mine. In the future, we seek to incorporate in the formulation respirable dust, diesel particulate matter and ventilation constraints in order to create more realistic schedules, and enhance miners’ health and safety.

"IntroductionHistoricalCyanidation is a leaching process, in world-wide use, to extract gold (and silver) from ores and concentrates. The process has many inherent advantages on account of its adaptability:a. to any scale of operation;b. to a wide range of ore types and mineral associations;c. to a wide range of physical characteristics of the gold particle size, alloy (electrum) or mineral (telluride);d. to relatively simple plant controls and operating procedures;e. to simple marketing procedures and quick cash return.The basic idea for cyanidation was first described and patented by a German chemist, L. Elsner, in 1846. Some forty years later, J.S. McArthur, a metallurgical chemist and R.W. and W. Forrest, medical doctors, all of Glasgow, Scotland, came to realize the import of the discovery and accordingly, registered patents in Great Britain in 1887 and in the United States in 1889. The keystone of the McArthur-Forrest patent registration was the use of weak (0.05o/o) instead of strong (1.0%) solution.The years 1890-1910 saw much progress in equipment design and the advance from batch to continuous processing to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.In later years, technological progress followed advances in materials of construction and control systems. Current innovations include large-scale equipment, high-capacity thickeners, belt type filters and Steller, candle-type filters for plants using zinc dust precipitation. As well, environmental protection is increasingly a major concern.The technology of gold adsorption from cyanide solution onto activated carbon has made rapid strides in recent years. This has followed the initial efforts of Potter, Salisbury, Zadra and their colleagues of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Station in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the field work of Homestake Mining Company personnel, in Lead, South Dakota."

The use of EPB shields in the so-called mixed face conditions has set new demands to man and machine in EPB shield tunneling. EPB shields were initially conceived to drive in the pressurized closed mode in soft ground, whereas hard rock TBMs were designed to work in the unpressurized open mode. The present use of EPB shields in hard rock and mixed face conditions requires the combination of both technologies by finding best compromise solutions. This paper deals firstly with the geotechnical and mechanical interactions between machine and ground. Further on the critical points such as tool wear and tool replacement are exposed, together with a proposal of best solutions.

"CANADA HAS A GREATER LAKE AREA than any other country. Discountin the Great Lakes, this fresh-water area, mainly in the Canadian Shield, is listed as approximately 300,000 sq. mi. Densities of lakes range up to 7,500 in a 5,294-sq. mi. area of the Shield, southwest of Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan. Five areas chosen randomly from the Shield (Figure 1) contained sufficient lakes to provide samples at a density of at least one per 10 sq. mi. Regional geochemical surveys in the Appalachian area (Nova Scotia, Boyle et al., 1958; New Brunswick, Boyle et al., 1966) and in the Cordilleran area (Yukon, Gleeson, 1965) of Canada and in many other areas of the world have relied heavily on analyses of stream sediments. These surveys show that sampling of material related to the drainage system reflects the over-all trace element content of the rocks and surficial deposits in the drainage basin. In the Shield, the classic types of dendritic (and other) stream systems found elsewhere in the world are very rare. However, impeded and disorganized stream systems that abound with lakes can provide the exploration geochemist with an ideal composite drainage system sample in the form of lake sediment. This paper attempts to demonstrate the feasibility of, and review the theory and problems involved in, the use of lake sediment as a regional geochemical exploration medium. Most of the references to field examples are taken from a regional survey using lake bottom sediment as the sample medium over 1,500 sq. mi of the Coppermine basalt group and adjacent rocks (Figure 2). During this regional survey, detailed sampling of several lakes was carried out and the results are referred to at appropriate places in the text."

"Multi-stage crushing plants, including high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) circuits, require more materials handling equipment than SAG and ball mill circuits. A temptation exists to neglect the energy consumption of materials handling when doing desktop comparisons of HPGR versus SAG milling circuits because estimation of materials handling power requirements can demand significant general arrangement drafting that is not available when performing preliminary scoping or ""desktop"" studies.The largest component of materials handling power is consumed by conveyors when lifting material between stages of crushing, meaning that a simple potential energy model can be used to evaluate conveying specific power consumption. This potential energy consumption for conveying can then be factored to provide overall materials handling specific energy consumption suitable for desktop studies of HPGR and other multi-stage crushing circuits. The technique also permits different crushing circuit flowsheets to be evaluated, at a preliminary level, by simply counting the number of times a conveyor must ""lift"" ore from ground level up to a bin or other equipment mounted up high.INTRODUCTIONTrade-off studies of multi-stage crushing plants involving high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) versus semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuits typically focus on the operating cost savings of crushing plants versus the capital cost savings of SAG mill plants. Very high-level (or desktop) studies of this type do not include a great deal of engineering work, meaning that the details (and costs) of ancillary systems are often not captured when doing the comparisons. The more complicated nature of the multistage crushing plants means there are more ancillary systems than a SAG mill plant, risking a skewed analysis of the operating costs, benefiting the HPGR option.One of the ancillary systems that may be overlooked is the more complicated conveying systems inherent in multi-stage crushing plants. Due to the mass of material being handled in large mining operations, these conveyors become a significant portion of the operating costs. A simple way to estimate the specific energy consumption of conveying systems without requiring engineering drawings and a site layout would allow high-level studies to capture this operating cost."

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

"The current state of environment has been achieved by acting linearly. At the same time, we know that transition towards circular economy cannot be made the same way that we have used to, trusting only a market economy and economic growth. Environmental improvements have been promoted, some progress has been made, but major steps towards sustainability have not been taken. Industry is now facing significant change, from process related environmental thinking to product-based environmental thinking.Engineers make decisions which have lifelong influence and even longer on environment and society. Material engineers in case of saving natural resources and increasing material cycle, have an important role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Best knowledge of minerals and materials is in the material development phase. If we want to increase the cycle of different materials, it is vital to make decisions towards circular economy in early phase of product´s life cycle.The target of this study is to promote circular economy; to increase material efficiency; to save natural resources; and to extend product lifecycles in process industry via product design and material development. In this study we have a new kind of cooperation. We combine two disciplines, engineering science and fine arts. We promote sustainability via breaking out the silos. We bring the cyclic artistic thinking into engineering science and environmental research. The new research combination makes the existing information visible in a new way, and it will change attitudes and ways to act by means other than traditional linear rationality.We have tested the new working method via the industrial case study with the chosen product: the sandwich panel of construction industry. The target of the study was to create something new from the chosen product with artistic thinking. The working method will be presented in this paper."

"2.1. INTRODUCTIONNo agreement can be perfect in the sense that it contemplates and provides for all eventualities. Mineral acquisition agreements are usually negotiated and drafted at a time when an orebody is no more than a gleam in a geologist’s eye, so it is hardly possible to provide for development and operation in other than the most general terms. However, an agreement that stops short of contemplating the possibility of an orebody and production is ill-advised. Accordingly, it is important to provide procedures to make decisions that will let the project proceed, even in the face of a fallingout between parties. Whether the parties are shareholders in a corporation or venturers in a contractual common undertaking like a joint venture, differences of opinion and disputes will occur. Unfortunately, more and more are ending up before the courts. Besides greed and the growing tendency in society to fight rather than talk, there are other factors that contribute to the increase of litigation. In some jurisdictions, agreements have tended to become complicated, often defying interpretation, even by a lawyer, and explorationists want their budgets to go into the ground as constructive work rather than into a lawyer’s pocket. All this has led to a growing tendency for corporations to take the attitude that the chances of finding a mine are, at best, marginal and there are lots of earlier agreements in the files to draw from, so why not prepare their own agreements? As discussed in the preceding chapter, this can be folly. All these factors can quickly have parties facing each other in court while a project sits idle. Added to this is the problem that, in some jurisdictions, lawyers may take cases on a contingency-fee basis, sometimes promoting the pursuit of a nebulous claim.When an orebody is discovered, someone will always want some, or more, for himself. There is a breed of “prospectors” who prospect for legal actions, on the somewhat sound grounds that a major corporation will buy off nuisance litigation, rather than incurring the cost and effort of attacking even a poorly founded claim in the courts. They may even find a winner. Besides, it is far more comfortable and relaxing to prospect for problems and legal niceties than to prospect for an orebody.1 In short, it is appropriate to consider briefly some of the factors relating to lawsuits and judgments. Although many of the comments are made in the context of the common law and the Canadian legal system, most of the concepts and suggestions are applicable to any legal system."

On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. "The froth flotation process was patented by E.L. Sulman, H.F.K. Pickard, and John Ballot in 1906 . . . . . . . . . .James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U.S., about August 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Montana . . . . . . . . . .By 1914, 42 mining companies were operating or experimenting with the flotation process . . . . . . . . . .The period 1930 to 1960 saw the application of flotation spread to nonsulphide ores and become the key factor in the economic production of many industrial minerals". So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining the oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1)mineralization; 2)oxidation; 3)structural setting; 4)lithology; 5)alteration; and ultimately, 6)the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

The purpose of this bulletin is to describe the methods of constructing and operating representative types of plants in the United States used for removing the light hydrocarbons from petroleum by continuous distillation, such plants being commonly known in the trade as topping or skimming plants. In the discussion of each plant an endeavor has been made to arrange the text similarly in order to facilitate comparison and to emphasize the important features. The various experimental values for the specific and the latent heats of the oils apply approximately to the oil treated. Careful experiments with each oil and its commercial fractions were not justifiable in view of the purpose of this report. It is regretted that limitations for recording data at the different plants made impossible the determination of a heat balance for each, which would have provided an equitable method of comparing efficiencies. The writer has confined himself to a comparison of the relative efficiencies of the distilling apparatus alone by the following method: Effi . f till d tt" _ Heat theoretically required. ciency 0 SIS an se mgs - Heat content of fuel consumed. The plants described are all in California where the topping industry has had its growth accentuated by the character and the use of the oil handled. The scarcity of suitable coal made the adoption of other fuel necessary, and the heavy oil of California supplied the need. To raise the flash point and to dehydrate this oil, various plants have been developed. However, the topping industry is represented in other fields; the Roxana Petroleum Co. of Cushing, Okla., and the Warner-Quinlan Asphalt Co. of New Jersey, are operating Trumble plants, and Texas and Oklahoma operators have been experimenting with different pipe retorts for continuous running. In addition to the reasons for topping cited above, in California topping has other purposes which give the plants practically a universal field in the oil industry. These additional purposes are (1) to remove the lighter constituents of the oil prior to storage for a long period, thus reducing the losses from evaporation, (2) to dehydrate and clean the oil, and (3) in conjunction with a complete refinery, to remove the lighter fractions cheaply and quickly, leaving a residue to be rerun for lubricants, coke, and other products. The reader in studying a plant for possible adaption to his own use should note that local considerations enter into the design and size of a plant. Several questions present themselves, as follows: 1. What type is suitable for the oil? 2. How much money is available for construction? 3. Will the volume of residuum be large enough for heat exchange with the crude? 4. Can the heat content of the vapors be used to reduce the cooling-water requirements? 5. What method will best recover the heat from stack gases? 6. Are the various pieces of apparatus adequate in size and best adapted to their purpose? 7. Is every possible provision made for the recovery of waste heat? 8. What products will be made, and what volume of each? 9. Is there provision for the recovery of light vapors? 10. Will the saving of fuel justify the capital and maintenance charges on the regenerative apparatus contemplated? It is regretted that information concerning the operation of topping plants with eastern and Middle West oils is not available. The writer carefully canvassed the Middle West, but did not find a plant where operation had progressed beyond the early experimental stages and reliable figures could be furnished. The reader will find fuel economy and heat recovery emphasized throughout the descriptions. The conservation of the available petroleum supply is of the utmost importance, and the Bureau of Mines presents this paper to encourage the hearty cooperation of operators to that end. The Baume gravity scale used throughout the report is that of Tagliabue with a modulus of 141.5 for conversion to specific gravity.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. Overall, the results show promise for the heap leaching of Witwatersrand gold ores prepared using HPGR and demonstrate the value of a multi-disciplinary geometallurgical approach.CITATION:Nwaila, G, Becker, M, Ghorbani, Y, Petersen, J, Reid, D L, Bam, L C, de Beer, F C and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad.
