This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. "The number of underground mines replacing diesel by battery powered mobile equipment is growing worldwide. The latter produces locally zero emissions and less heat, improving air quality in the working areas, and can potentially reduce energy costs due to lower ventilation requirements and in the face of higher fuel prices. However, there is a lack of systematic approaches to evaluate the potential economic benefit of switching from diesel mobile technologies to electric ones. This paper presents a method to answer the question of whether a mine with known operating conditions should invest in battery-powered electric equipment to reduce its total costs. Furthermore, this method provides the optimal number of electric and diesel equipment in relationship with their impact on the ventilation system and the total costs of running the mine from the energy perspective. A case study of an underground mine in Northern Ontario (Canada) is presented to validate the method proposed. The scenarios studied include the specific climatic conditions of the region, and the possibility to use heat recovery for the ventilation system. Overall, results show that the use of electric mobile plants is cost competitive, especially so when electricity cost can be lowered through load-shedding strategies.INTRODUCTIONOf the multiple advantages of using electrical vehicles (EV) underground in mining, the potential increase in air quality and comfort is the most significant (Paraszczak, Svedlund, Fytas, and Laflamme, 2014). Until recently, fully battery-powered electrical underground heavy duty machinery (i.e., loaders or trucks) were not available, so that tethered and trolley assisted vehicles were the only electric alternatives to diesel powered vehicles (Bétournay et al., 2011). Today, several commercial battery-based alternatives are available (General Electric Fairchild, 2015; RDH Mining Equipment, 2015; Paraszczak et al., 2014). Operational details can be found in Ewing (2015). The main battery technology used (Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO4, or LFP) was already anticipated in Bétournay et al. (2011) as a good candidate for these types of vehicles. "INTRODUCTION The 2014 SME Guide for Reporting Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves (the SME Guide) has been adopted by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). The SME Guide is recommended as a minimum standard and a basis for developing industry best practices in the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves for public and private purposes. The Guide is therefore strongly recommended to be used by members of this organization. The SME Guide was updated in 2014 to include CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserve International Standards) core definitions, and it is envisioned that the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will adopt the SME Guide in 2016. However, as of the end of 2015, the SEC Industry Guide 7 remains the standard for the U.S. reporting of Mineral Reserves. This paper will cover the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves, a discussion of Modifying Factors, and the classification definitions and guidelines. The definitions and guidelines contained in this report are from the SME Guide. FRAMEWORK FOR MINERAL RESOURCE AND MINERAL RESERVE CLASSIFICATION Figure 1 illustrates the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves using the Guide. Mineral Resources are divided into three classifications of Inferred, Indicated, or Measured while Mineral Reserves include Probable and Proven classifications. These classifications reflect improved knowledge and confidence of the deposit from the top of the figure to the bottom. In other terms, the deposit risk also decreases from top to bottom.The relationships in Figure 1 reflect different levels of geoscientific knowledge and different degrees of technical and economic evaluation. Mineral Resources can be estimated on the basis of geoscientific information with input from other disciplines to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. It was not too many years ago that the classification of a Mineral Resource was based on the evaluation of a limited set of factors that included spatial drill hole and grade distribution (kriging variance, as example), distance to the closest hole, and number of samples used to estimate a block grade. These are still important considerations, but classification following the Guide must also take into account sample integrity, sample QAQC, database integrity and completeness, geological understanding, and geological and grade or quality continuity. In addition, a general consideration of the Modifying Factors, to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction, adds complexity to the classification."

This paper will be in two parts, a discussion of the benefits available from benefit sharing as a concept followed by an examination of how this approach was applied at Mesa J Mine and what improvements were made. The first part is an outline of the ways that both parties in a benefit sharing agreement can uncover additional wealth by bringing a new approach to the relationships between mine and supplier. The paper describes a partnering agreement recently established between Robe River Iron Associates (RRIA) and Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific Ltd (DNAP) to access the wealth locked up by the usual explosives supply contracts in Australia and elsewhere. The partners are acting cooperatively to maximise the benefits to both parties from optimising blasting practices at the Mesa J Iron Ore Mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The Atlas Concentrator, reputedly the largest in the Far East today, is located on the island of Cebu in the Republic of the Philippines. It started operation on a 4000 TPD capacity in 1955. An expansion program, coupled with significant improvements both in the Crushing Plant and the Mil, made the Atlas Concentrator what it is today, treating about 14,000 tons of ore per day at a comparatively low cost of about $0.50 per ton treated. The Atlas Copper Mine is at present mainly an open pit operation, with ore supplied from two pits (Lutopan and Biga) north of the Concen¬trator. Development of an Underground Mine, situated on the main ore body at Lutopan, which will be a block caving operation, has been underway since 1963, and this underground mining operation is expected to b e in full production by the latter part of 1966.

Management is a major part of sustainability research. Many different aspects of sustainability have already received significant research attention, but the management processes in mining from the perspective of their impact on society are less understood and integrated as a holistic frame. It is evident that mining technology has received major blame in past ecological disasters and major mining-induced environmental hazards, but the management-mining process has escaped unscathed. This should not have happened. Instead, the management processes should share equal blame with obsolete technology for the failure to identify and monitor potential environmental hazards before their inception of mining. We will present an emergent style of management for the future of mining. It challenges the actual ?mind-set? of mining management. It describes balance and equilibrium: physical, chemical, and biological in nature as an understanding of nature?s language, which is Geomimic along side ?the bottom line?. The goal is to minimize loss instead of maximize profits (waste design) at the design stage of mining and to develop clean technologies (nature's values) to achieve non-social environmental impacts that provide a prosperous legacy to future generations.

THE SULLIVAN MINE The Sullivan mine of the Consolidated Mining and ? Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, is situated at Kimberley, B.C., nineteen miles from Cranbrook, a divisional point on the Crowsnest Pass branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. Production started on a small scale in 1900, and in 1914 the mine became the largest lead producer in Canada. In 1925 it was the largest single producer of lead and zinc in the world. Since operations commenced, 4,800,000 tons of ore have been produced from stopes and 170,000 tons from development. At the present time, ore is being mined at the rate of 1,100,000 tons per year, with a yield of about 200,000 lb. lead, 110,000 lb. zinc, and 4,000,000 oz. silver. The town of Kimberley is easily accessible by road as well as by rail. The altitude at Mark creek, a tributary of the St. Mary's river, is 3,700 feet. To th'e north of the creek, Sullivan hill rises to a height of 6,100 feet, and it is on the southern slope of this hill that the mine is located. Sullivan hill is in the Purcell range, which rises between the Rocky Mountain trench on the east and Kootenay lake on the west. It thus lies within what is commonly referred to as the East Kootenay district.

Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator's seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.

This report contains the Phase I findings of a study to select and test devices for preventing lack of alertness in haulage truck drivers. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting surface metal and nonmetal mines, interviewing drivers and safety personnel and reviewing accident reports. A number of devices for detecting a lack of alertness were considered and three were recommended for testing in actual operation.

The selective placement of coal strip mine overburden is examined. Physical end chemical properties of spoil detrimental to revegetation and groundwater are detailed. The United States is divided into regions of similar problems. Five mining methods already used in the industry, that are capable of selectively handling; waste are examined in detail. Technical and economic comparisons are made for the systems when applied to realistic mine settings. The same analysis is conducted for five novel methods capable of selectively handling waste. Comparisons arc made between novel and existing methods. Suggestions for new and modified equipment are outlined. Recommendations for further research are provided.

Organic materials are major constituents of the ore in several uranium deposits. Some of these deposits have been described as "urano-organic" because, the organic materials are believed to have provided the dominant control for the accumulation and deposition of uranium and are directly and intimately intermingled with the uranium. The nature of these urano-organic deposits has been problematic in terms of (a) the origin of the associated organic materials and (b) the specific form of' occurrence of uranium. The organic materials in urano-organic deposits have been genetically related to both coal and petroleum or their progenitors or deriva-tives. Analytical data presented here (infrared, chemical. D.T.A.) suggest that coaliferous materials or related plant derivatives represent the main source of the organic fractions in practically all major urano-organic ores analyzed from the Colorado Plateau and other areas. Recognition of the specific form of occurrence of uranium in urano-organic deposits has been problematic mainly because the uranium is usually in an extremely fine-grained and disseminated state in the organic matrix. Electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction analyses presented here show that fine-grained uranium minerals, specifically uraninite or coffinite. are disseminated in the organic matrix as the predominant form of uranium in most major deposits; however. the presence of true organo-uranium compounds is also suggested for some deposits.

"Sensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to boost mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the process has proven revolutionary for some operations.This paper briefly reviews the current position of ore sorting in the industry, as well as abridged results from specific operations such as Barrick, McEwen, New Gold, and two others. The paper also introduces the concept of “Profit Recovery™”, the measuring of recovery based on rock profitability rather than just metal content.IntroductionSensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to increase mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the processing stage is proving to be revolutionary for some operations. These potential outcomes have been too invaluable to be overlooked by both producing operations and prospective projects, thus leading to a wide range of studies on ore sorting. In addition, the advent of ore sorting has also called for a new standard of recovery analysis. The answer to this is the creation of a new term and concept - Profit Recovery™.This paper evaluates the most recent results of ore sorting in the mining industry, and presents the results from five different mining operations. Additionally, this paper will discuss and evaluate the Profit Recovery™ of each of these operations. The goal of this paper is to address common concerns regarding ore sorting rejects and their actual impact on project economics.State Of The ArtOre Sorting is a sensor-based sorting and pre-concentration technology implemented before the processing stage that is used to reduce the amount of waste reporting to the mill feed. This technology can also be utilized to recover ore from previously uneconomic waste, as well as reduce the mill energy and reagent consumption (Tong, 2012). In greenfield projects, sensor-based sorting can further provide value by reducing processing capital costs. The decline of available high grade orebodies and decreasing head grades has further increased the attractiveness of pre-concentration, and subsequently ore sorting (Lessard et al., 2014).There are currently two notable types of sensor-based sorting: bulk and rock-by-rock. Bulk sorting consists of live, high tonnage sorting that can be installed on a scoop or on a conveyor belt with a diverter. Rock-by-rock is a selective sorting method that scans and sorts individual rocks on a conveyor belt, and rejects rocks using air jets or mechanical levers. Figure 1 shows a diagram for a typical air jet sorter."

GENERAL Location of Property THE Stirling zinc-lead-copper deposit is in Richmond county, Cape Breton, about a quarter of a mile southwest from Stirling P.O., and some 45 miles southwest from Sydney. The property is accessible by road for at least nine months of the year, and during the navigation period coastal boats maintain a service touching at the port of Fourchu, eleven miles from the mine. When flying conditions permit, the Cape Breton Flying Club, of Sydney, will carry passengers to or from the property, a service which has been particularly advantageous on two occasions when hospitalization was urgently required. The Company has mining rights on leases Nos. 73-74, 78-80, and 101-104, inclusive, and owns 166 acres at Stirling and one acre at Fourchu. The ore deposit is in lease No. 73. History The Stirling deposit was discovered in the 'nineties', probably about 1895. The original discovery is said to have been made in the bed of Copper creek, which traverses the ore-zone. For a number of years, indifferent development work was carried on with a view to copper production only, and it was not until1915-16 that attention was directed to the possible production of zinc. Previously, the ore had been considered too complex for metallurgical treatment. During the period 1916-24 several operators attempted to develop the property, among them being the Stirling Exploration Company, Stirling Mining & Smelting Company, New Jersey Zinc Company of New York, Hayden & Stone Company of Boston, and The Eastern Mining & Milling Company. Up to 1924, the work was limited mainly to trenching, stripping, ? diamond drilling, and shot drilling.

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.
