Benchmarking is a business management process that seeks improvement through the study and reapplication of practices conducted by industry leaders. This discussion presents objectives and organization of benchmarking applied to mining geomechanics. Similar procedures have been successfully applied to mining companies, laboratories, and research organizations involved in mining geomechanics throughout the world. Benchmarking is a structured process that allows an organization to learn from the "best" in the field. The objectives of benchmarking vary depending on the company's targeted areas for improvements. Typical goals include ground control cost reduction, enhanced safety, optimization of geotechnical staffing, development of state-of-the-art design procedures, or the adoption of the "best in the field" geotechnical data management. Once the objective of the study is established and the practices and procedures to be benchmarked are identified, a benchmarking team is formed from internal and outside specialists. Benchmarking in geomechanics is fundamentally different than in most other fields because of the effects of local geologic conditions and regulations, both of which must be understood by all on the benchmarking team, before a comparative analysis can be made.

Thank you Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen of SME-AIM? for this opportunity to talk to you about, one of the most interesting and challenging facets of our mining industry. Because the need was then -we built in 1964 what is still today, one of the most sophisticated AC mining machine simulators for this or any industry. It simulated the electrical controls and circuits of an AC shuttle car. The student activated the controls on the main console, which represented the elementary control and power circuits. Its accompanying slide-tape program, student manual and worksheets provided our customers with an effective and highly motivational means to teach their face mechanics: 1. practical AC circuit and motor theory 2. print reading 3. troubleshooting techniques Nearly 10,000 men have put in over 100,000 manhours of training on the AC panel and its DC counterpart. The DC panel was modeled after the 14BU10 Loader. The success of these larger panels pointed out the need in our industry for an orangized, basic electrical program designed around mining machinery components & circuits. But probably more importantly, they brought to light the tremendous thirst for upgrading by our industry's employees. We then turned our attention to developing programs around very basic panels. The resulting programs were designed also to assure maximum student involvement.

This study aims to show a method that facilitates strategic thinking, resource optimization, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that selected innovations align with the company’s long-term objectives and commitment to responsible mining practices.

Along with the immense benefit of modern explosives seismic and acoustic effects caused by their detonation can be disruptive and alarming to many people. Claims range from affecting sexual performance to outright demolition of a residential structure. Regardless of the quality of the blast design and other precautionary measures, the inherent danger posed by the use of explosives often leaves residents searching for restitution. Consequently, many blasting companies today find themselves at the center of litigation. In the event that a blasting complaint proceeds to litigation your case will not be decided on “reasonable doubt” as in criminal trials. Instead, the jury will be instructed to decide guilt or innocence on a “preponderance of the evidence” presented. Even if you are able to present the best and most complete evidence that you have not caused the claim, the jury may rule in the favor

The exploration work on a seleniferous tuff deposit near Lysite, Wyo., was confined chiefly to an area of approximately 1 square mile selected on the basis of prior examination and sampling work by the Bureau of Mines. This area was superficially explored by digging and sampling over 2,000 feet of trenches and 15 test pits. The surface sampling indicated that the deposit might contain a multimillion-ton reserve of easy-to-mine volcanic tuff assaying more than 0.01 percent Se. Later, 11 holes, ranging in depth from 57 to 135 feet and totaling 929.4 feet, were drilled under contract using a dry rotary drill. Samples for assay were cut at 5-foot intervals or at noticeable physical changes in the formation being drilled. Of the 206 samples assayed from the drilling, only 8 contained more than 0.005 percent selenium, and 2 of these assayed as high as 0.012 percent Se. Chemical analyses of samples obtained from six holes drilled by the Nugget Coal & Timber Co. to the south of the area explored by the Bureau of Mines showed that no selenium-bearing formations were encountered in that work. Two of 72 samples taken from 42 validation pits dug by claim holders contained more than 0.005 percent selenium. The exploratory work established that the selenium mineralization is erratically distributed in small irregular bodies and is not confined to any one tuff bed. Because of the lack of correlation between the infrequent showing of low-grade tuff, neither the extent nor grade of the reserves could be calculated.

Let's start with a bit of History. Before the advent of woven wire screen cloth or perforated plate as we know it today, screens or sieves, as they were called, were probably made by the Greeks or Romans around the year 150 B.C. Coarse openings were made from bamboo or other woven reeds or with holes punched in leather hides, while fine openings may have been made using hair from the long tails of horses woven with small openings. The first metallic woven wire screens were probably produced by the Germans in the 15th Century. All of these screening devices were, of course, hand operated. The first records of mechanically driven shaking screens are found in "John Smeathon's Diary of His Journey to the Low-Country" in 1775. He was the English Civil Engineer who built the famous Eddystone Light House and discovered the formula for making hydraulic cements. He described a screen the Dutch were using as a wooden frame on which woven wire was mounted. This box was inclined at an angle and hinged on the lower end. The upper or feed end was equipped with a pulley so they could raise it up, say 5" or 6", and then let it drop abruptly onto a sill or stop plate, thus jarring the material deposited on the woven wire through the openings. Material that was passed over the deck was scooped up and redeposited on the woven wire for rescreening. This was an early form of what is today known as a recirculating load.

The possibilities of the use of ultrasonics in the extraction of gold and silver is the subject of a study initiated in our laboratory since the beginning of 1986. The study consisted of various aspects of extraction, the results of which are in· different stages of advancement. Reduction in leach time combined with higher recovery are the most striking effects so far. The ultrasonics machine, originally part of a small pilot plant, forms now part of a much larger unit. This has the remarkable effect of even higher recoveries and shorter leach times. These data suggested a study on the possibilities of reduction of thiourea consumption. Although promising, the results of these studies require check testing and will be published as soon as our findings have been confirmed. During the study, which consisted of the application in thiourea and cyanide leaching, some interesting side effects were observed. In the first place, a reduction in penetration time which might make coarse grinding feasible. Secondly, an increase in compaction of the filter cake which reduces pregnant liquor losses, especially with clayey ores and industrial waste products. These will be studied under contract in the near future.

Efficient drill-and-blast performance is pivotal to the profitability of deep-level mines, where high operating costs and declining grades demand maximum throughput. This study investigated persistent fragmentation problems at a longhole stoping operation that suffered from simultaneous oversized rock blockages in 300 mm × 300 mm grizzlies and excessive fines. Fifty-one muckpile images from five blasted stopes were analysed with Split-Desktop. Although the overall F₈₀ was 287 mm, nominally suitable for the grizzly aperture, the Rosin- Rammler uniformity index of 0.80 revealed a highly inconsistent size distribution containing both boulders and fines. Existing drill patterns were then evaluated with the Aegis underground software, which showed negligible crack overlap at the toe owing to inadequate spacing and burden. Insufficient energy overlap between blastholes, particularly at the toe, was found to contribute to the coarse fragmentation, while excessive fines were attributed to the crushing and severely fractured zones of blastholes. Optimisation simulations demonstrated that an 89 mm blasthole diameter on a 2 m × 2 m pattern would overlap, aligning with Aegis requirements of balancing powder factor, break angle, and energy distribution. Implementing this revised pattern is expected to reduce secondary breaking, prevent ore-pass blockages, lower fines, and ultimately improve overall production efficiency. The methodology illustrates how integrated image analysis and modelling software can effectively diagnose and address fragmentation issues, particularly in underground longhole mining, where challenging blasting conditions require a balance between achieving optimal fragmentation and maintaining stope stability. This approach offers a cost-effective pathway to improving comminution performance in deeplevel mines.

This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank, U. S. Geological Survey, that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Here, an area of andesitic rocks, four square miles in extent, has been argillized, pyritized, chloritized and silicified. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies were followed by the diamond drilling of three holes totalling 6,220 feet. Further alteration ang geochemical studies were made on the cores from these holes. A brief review of the alteration and geologic mapping, colored aerial photograph interpretation, geochemical soil and rock sampling, magnetic, gravity and radio-metric surveys are presented together with some conclusions regarding this work. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. BASIS FOR THE PROJECT The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank (1947, p. 444) that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, including the favorable Leadville limestone, are exposed three miles south of the altered area, and reason exists to believe that they might underlie it within a reasonable depth. Alteration of pre-mineral volcanic rocks has been used successfully as a guide to concealed orebodies in the Main Tintic and East Tin tic mining districts, Utah (Bill-ingsley, 1933, p. 120-122; Lovering et al, 1949; Howd, 1957, p. 124-134; Cook, 1957, p. 73) and could be a useful guide here. GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE The Northern and Southern Bonanza mining districts are northwest of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, just within the northeastern edge of the San Juan volcanic province. "INTRODUCTION.Luring the year 1923 a complete survey was made of the condition of research in the reduction (milling) and concentration of ores and nonmetallic minerals - that is, up to the stage where the ores or concentrates were ready for hydro- or pyro-metallurgical treatment. This survey was carried on under the general supervision of L. A. Lyon, assistant director and chief metallurgist of the Bureau of mines, in cooperation with the milling committee of the American Institute of mining and metallurgical Engineers, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California. Other institutions, including the National Research council, were of assistance and outlined recommendations during the study.While this report is on ""ore dressing"", it contains short sections on coal and clay. The mechanical handling that these minerals undergo is ""dressing"", so that ore dressing is inclusive of metallic and nonmetallic minerals. ""milling"", in its broadest sense, includes with ore dressing certain other metallurgical treatment which the report is not designed to cover.The survey revealed that considerable experimentation is being carried on great cost to the mining industry, but that the research is in general poorly coordinated while companies and firms are adequately taking care of routine tests and the mechanical features involved in their own operations, no comprehensive study of the fundamental principles of ore reduction is now in progress or contemplated. Many industries, besides mining, are interested in the preparation of materials for final treatment, rendering this investigation of value also to them. This class of fundamental research is neglected by industry unless there is some agency which can bring together at least a majority of this interested in a cooperative effort. It can not be effectively handled by a single company; and, moreover, no company can be expected to bear the whole burden of an investigation to benefit the entire industry or a number of industries hence there is need for concerted study within reasonable limits. Furthermore, co-operation eliminates duplication, which is largely a waste of effort and capital."

These volumes report on the study initiated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop and apply a methodology to quantitatively assess the probability and potential benefits of technological innovation over the next twenty-five years. The potential was recognized for new technology to solve copper industry problems in the United States. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Develop a methodology to obtain the opinions of mineral experts about future events -their likelihood of occurrence, and, conditional on occurrence, when and to what extent they are likely to occur; (2) Identify, select, and describe potential technological innovations which would have significant impact on copper production; (3) Implement the methodology and obtain the opinions of the mineral experts regarding selected copper technologies; and (4) Analyze the expected future benefits of successful technological innovations :n the copper industry. Although individual technologies are continuously examined throughout the copper 'community', this study is the first known comprehensive forecast of future copper technology. This study is also believed to be unique 1n that it represents the consensus opinion of over sixty expert copper technologists on the expected use of innovative technology in the industry over the next 25 years. This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, steel, hearth, blast furnace The Mittal Steel Company operates about 36 blast furnaces on four continents. Furnaces range from 1100 m3 to 4800 m3 inner volume. The focus of the group is to push for increasing productivity and increasing campaign life. This has been especially challenging, as many of these furnaces were not equipped for long campaigns during their prior rebuilds. Monitoring and operating practices have to be modified to match the new philosophy. Mid-campaign hearth repair strategies and hearth design philosophies have had to be reconsidered. The paper describes experiences with the current hearth designs and measures taken for hearth life extension. Additionally, the philosophy of recent hearth re-designs is discussed.

This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.3 and 2.6 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year production period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 indexes. Initial capital investment is $34.6 million for the 1.3-MM-tpy mine and $63.5 million for the 2.6-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $50.8 and $92.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $38.51 and $34.91 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $13.41 and $12.27 per ton for the 1.3- and 2.6 -MM- tpy mines.

Ingersoll-Rand Research, T n c and the Lee-Norse Co. built a Bureau of Mines sponsored, special deep cutting continuous miner under this contract to study the effects of rotational speed and depth of cut on airborne respirable dust. After preliminary tests indicated and later verified that deep cutting - low rotational speed reduces airborne respirable dust, a series of underground tests were performed (9 combinations of rotational speed and depth of cut at 45° bit angle and 4" bit spacing). Additional data was obtained on specific energy, coal sizing and noise. The conclusions reached from the tests results were; a) deep cutting reduces airborne respirable dust generated and specific energy needed to cut coal., b) the greater majority of the decrease occurs in going from 1" to 2" depth of cut, c) lowering rotational speed has a particularly sizable effect of reducing the amount of dust at the operator's location, d) no significant relationship was found for either noise level or coal sizing to rotational speed or depth of cut. Recommendations include. a)) use of specific energy as an indicator of the change in dust level correlating to changes in cutting parameters, b) mine operators should acquire new deep cutting machines., since retrofitting would be selective.
