"PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is a large-scale truck and shovel operation mining thermal-coal in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The operation produces 15 million tonnes of coal and mines over 120 million bank cubic metres of overburden annually. Approximately 35 percent of the waste rock is classified as potentially acid forming. Acid drainage must therefore be managed to prevent acid formation from spoil dumps and mined-out areas.KPC aims to prevent acid production in dumps by covering potentially acid forming spoils with materials identified as non acid-forming. The covers, built to engineering standards, minimise the flux of oxygen and water to pyritic spoils, thereby controlling the oxidation reaction, and reducing ARD discharge to negligible rates. Cover designs and cover materials vary according to stability, materials availability, equipment availability, and cost effectiveness. A modified field net acid generation (NAG) test procedure has been developed at KPC to identify and segregate overburden geochemical types. This paper discusses the ARD management strategies and operational procedures adopted by KPC to manage potentially acid forming waste rock. The softwall mining system is a novel, new method of mining mineral deposits in soft, shallow, nonrock ground conditions. This method can mine the ore layer without substantially disturbing the existing overburden. The softwall mining system consists of machinery that is hydraulically controlled and powered, that can be buried (or used on the surface) to extract the ore or mineral from a layered deposit. The method is essentially an application of the longwall mining concept, modified for loose overburden and ore conditions, combined with hydraulic mining.

Most of the Indian coking coals are medium coking and of very high ash content. Beneficiation of these coals is a must for their utilisation in coke making. During washing while the ash content of the coal is reduced, the same is expected to affect the reactive-inert ratio and the proportion of various petrographic constituents in the clean coal. This will affect the coking behaviour, including the expansion characteristics, of such coal. An increase in expansion behaviour of coal increases the wall pressure and may damage the battery wall. Therefore, close monitoring of coking properties along with drop in ash is necessary for smooth use of the coal in coke ovens. An effort is, therefore, essential to understand the impact of washing on its coking properties. The studies were carried out with captive coals of Tata Steel, India. Three medium coking coal samples namely, VII A, VI A and XI SEB seam coals of West Bokaro Colliery were used for the study. The coal samples after washing to different ash levels were subjected to the following analysis: proximate, crucible swelling number (CSN), LT GK test, dilatometer and plastometer tests and petrography. The experimental data were then analysed to assess the relationship of various coking properties of the coal with its ash content. The studies clearly show that there is a strong impact of beneficiation of the coal on its coking behaviour. The impacts are more at lower level of ash in the clean coal. In general, the coking properties increase with a decrease in ash. This is primarily due to an enrichment of vitrinte materials in the clean coal and an increase in the reactive-inert ratio in the coals. However, the most important impact of the lowering ash is on the increase in the swelling nature of the coal. The coals with lower ash become highly expanding in nature. This may be very critical from operations of coke ovens point of view, especially stamp charged coke ovens. Necessary precaution should be taken in selecting the other coal blend constituents when these coals are beneficiated to a very low level of ash content.

"Tests were conducted to determine properties of 4 foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with MSHA’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard (1.5 mg/m3). Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used a low pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a NIOSH developed foam generator. Foam property tests comprising of a bottle shake test, foam expansion ratio, and water drainage were used to classify foams. The bottle shake tests determined that the lowest concentration of foam agent to be used was approximately 1.5%. Compressed air generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios (10-19) with high water drainage. Blower air generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios (30-60) with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The different foam agents produce foams with different material properties. Results of testing eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents, while having different foam properties, seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. INTRODUCTION About one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining. This technique allows for mining high volumes of coal, producing significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to the overexposures to longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [1]. When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain an average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [2]. Respirable dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors for the five-year period from 2010 to 2014 found that 5.6% (53 of 943 respirable coal mine dust samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the coal mine dust standard, and 4.3% (76 of 1768 samples) of the jacksetters exceeded the standard. If silica is present, the reduced standard is implemented, meaning that 11.4% (36 of 316 respirable coal mine samples analyzed for dust) of the jacksetters exceeded the reduced standard. Only 3.8% (18 of 478 samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the reduced standard [3]. Had the 1.5 mg/m3 standard been in effect during this period, non-compliant samples would have been much higher. For example, over 15% of the samples collected at the tailgate shearer operator occupation exceeded the lower standard."

THREE case histories from professions other than engineering will serve to introduce ideas basic to this discussion. Case (1) Date, about 1900. A young man, B. D. from a three-year graduate course in a prominent divinity school, was for two years a successful pastor of a small church; then friction over theological matters arose with a fundamentalist deacon of the "Bible belt" type. He resigned, returned to his university for a four-year medical course, interned for two more, and thereafter was successful and apparently happy as a physician. We may assume that he was converted in early adolescence and vowed himself to service as a minister. Acceptance of his announced career by parents, friends, and teachers plus his own determination confirmed his choice until illiberal criticism threatened his usefulness and he awoke to the fact that his inner needs were not along the direction in which inertia and his conscience had constrained him.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. The two most important influencers of cost-per-ton in an underground mining machine are its productivity (tons/hour) and its availability-utilization (hours/year). Operating cost and initial price have far less impact. This paper reviews a cost-per-ton sensitivity analysis for underground mining equipment and discusses benchmarks for measuring its performance. The conclusion is that miner-supplier partnerships and the Information Age are the two most significant trends in cost-per-ton reduction.

After a short presentation of the Division of Mining at the Royal Insti- tute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, the author presents some of-the fill research carried out at the Division. Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants' in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. Finally compressibility investi- gations and some finite element calcu- lations are presented.

A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect. "Rio Tinto Fer et Titane processes the ore extracted from the Lac Tio orebody to concentrate the hemo-ilmenite (FeO.TiO2-Fe2O3) mineral that is subsequently smelted to produce pig iron and titanium oxide slag. The ore is crushed, heat treated (roasted) and concentrated using dry magnetic separators. This paper describes a model to predict the magnetic susceptibility of the roasted ore and its behaviour in the magnetic separation plant. The model uses a classification of the ore as a function of the size and magnetic susceptibility of the particles. A subsequent division into mineral species allows the simulation of the magnetic separation process. The model is used to assess various operating options when process disturbances occur.INTRODUCTIONOre processing operations consist of ore size reduction followed by the recovery of valuable species in a concentrate that is subsequently sold for its minerals or metal content. The concentration processes are based on the physical and/or chemical properties of the minerals contained in the ore. Flotation is typically used to recover minerals of base metals such as copper, zinc, lead or nickel. Iron ore and other dense minerals are typically concentrated by gravity separation processes. Magnetic separation uses the magnetic properties of the minerals to concentrate magnetite and other minerals, to clean coal concentrate and to recycle ferrosilicon for dense separation processes (Brophy, 1985).Magnetic separators can be divided into low and high intensity separators and high gradient magnetic separators (Gillet, 2008). Most of the low gradient magnetic separators are built as rotary drums that are operated in wet or dry conditions. Dry magnetic drum separators are used by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Sorel-Tracy, Canada to concentrate hemo-ilmenite from the ore extracted at the Lac Tio Lake mine near Havre St-Pierre, Canada. The analysis of production data suggests that process improvement could be achieved by identifying key variables for the control of the magnetic separation circuit and/or by modification to the circuit flowsheet. The use of a process model was considered to be an effective approach to conduct a preliminary analysis of the circuit with a view toward process optimization. However, the literature contains few detailed studies dealing with the modelling of magnetic separation processes."

The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

A few days ago, while reading a report of the late Dr. Robert Bell in preparation for this afternoon's meeting, I found some impressive figures concerning the magnitude of the Hudson Bay basin. From the waters of the Bay itself, this great territory extends eastward 500 miles, westward l,300 miles to the Rocky mountains, and southward to the source of the Red river. It has a width of 2,100 miles from east to west, and a length of l,500 miles from north to south. Its area is almost three million square miles. It is not, of course, my intention to review the natural resources of this vast territory, but to confine my remarks to that portion of it adjacent to the waters of Hudson bay. A number of erroneous ideas exist in the minds of many concerning this northern country, especially as regards its latitude and climate. Burwell, at the entrance of Hudson strait, is in the latitude of 60 degrees or roughly that of the north of Scotland. The southern end of James bay has about the same latitude as the northern end of Vancouver .island.

Blast vibration data, such as PPV are usually scattered. In many cases, plots of PPV versus the charge weight scaled distance are so scattered that useful trends from different blast designs cannot be identified. The scattering of the data may be attributed to the inaccuracy of the PPV measurement, the definition of the scaled distance from a multiple-hole production blast, and the measurement of distances and charge weights. The error from vibration measurements is one of the major contributors to the scattering of the plots. If accurate monitoring is conducted, improved design options may be identified. This paper documents two case examples that compare different vibration sensor couplings. The first case shows mounting accelerometers at spots that protrude from the ground, compared with the sensors that were mounted on a flat ground surface. The second case compares data from loose-sand buried geophone with that from sensors coupled to the ground using concrete blocks.

The underground mining industry is presently using the fluid network analyzer and digital computer to analyze ventilation systems. The availability of the digital computer and ventilation programs to mining companies has escalated its use, permitting the design and modification of new or existing mine ventilation systems to be projected completely and thoroughly with consistent precision. Because the analog computer has been analyzing ventilation systems accurately for many years, a comparison of the analog and digital methods was warranted. This report summarizes a detailed comparison for one mine, based on parallel analyses by the two computer systems.

The oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is discussed from several viewpoints. Limitations of our present knowledge are pointed out, and several points where further information would be of special interest are mentioned.Firstly, some properties of minerals and their effect on oxidation are discussed. Properties of different species, such as crystal structure, lattice bonding, and "metallic" properties are mentioned, and then the effect of variation within a given species is discussed. The effect of physical factors, especially particle size, is also considered. Other variables discussed include the importance of solution composition, and its effect on the nature and rate of reaction, and the use of various oxidising agents. Some factors concerned with the whole system, such as temperature, pulp density and stirring rate are then considered.Finally, the nature of various oxidation products is discussed with reference to the kinetics of reaction and the nature of the rate limiting step. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to electrochemical explanations of the reaction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the factors governing the rate of oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is a prerequisite for the effective control of many ore treatment operations. Rapid oxidation of sulphides is usually desired during the leaching of sulphide ores and concentrates, but in the cyanidation of gold ores, or in the leaching of uranium ores, any oxidation of sulphides may be regarded as an undesirable side reaction. "Variable speed mill popularity has grown during the last 10 years with almost every SAG mill fitted with a variable speed drive. In addition, many of today’s larger ball mills are running a variable speed drive for various reasons. In the past, motor suppliers, especially gearless drive suppliers, have considered mills as being an overpriced rotor. This has lead to mills demanding more torque than what a motor can generate. This paper identifies the reasoning of what has happened and how to mitigate the mismatch in the future. Technical and economical issues are discussed, allowing mill operators to make an informed decision of which path to take in deciding what motor to put on a mill.INTRODUCTIONIt has been generally accepted in the past that motor suppliers and specialists in engineering companies understand the workings of a SAG mill or a ball mill and although there is a fair knowledge within the industry, in regards to mill torque requirements, the advent of variable speed drives in ball mills has shown the writer that a complete understanding of the mill torque requirements are not fully understood.This paper will discuss two aspects of mill torque requirements, (operating torque at various charge levels and start up torque), and how it relates to specifying the proper motor torque requirements.MILL OPERATING TORQUEMill operating torque at a given charge level and density in a mill is essentially constant throughout the entire speed range.
