"Abstract Pile design for building structures in the United States is typically performed by: 1) investigating and assigning engineering parameters to the respective ground bearing materials, 2) calculating ultimate pile to ground (geotechnical) capacity which is then reduced by a Safety Factor deemed appropriate by a registered Design Professional thereby arriving at an allowable pile geotechnical pile capacity, and 3) determining the required pile structural section using allowable pile section material properties. It is advantageous to use a Working Stress Design Method (WSDM) approach as one system of loads (service loads) are used in both the geotechnical and structural evaluation. There are a variety of methods used to determine the ultimate and allowable geotechnical capacity, and Building Codes often require a registered Design Professional to determine the appropriate method(s) and capacities. The International Building Code is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Structural design usually follows Building Code requirements and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) procedures. As design of the overlying structure typically follows a Strength Design Method (SDM) approach using factored loads, in some cases piling is first designed for pile-to-soil interaction using service loads, followed by evaluating the pile geometry for factored loads. Construction is the finalization and implementation of the designed piling. As such, project-specific technical specifications are typically developed by a registered Design Professional such that a project Owner can bid, buy, and instruct a Contractor as to the desired piling work and acceptance criteria. There are several Industry groups, including DFI, PDCA, ADSC, and ACI that provide guidance documents which the registered Design Professional can refer to in developing the piling technical specifications. It is the author’s opinion that the registered Design Professional is best suited to observe and verify the piling installation; many Building Departments require verification and documentation by a registered Professional as a condition of final acceptance.INTRODUCTIONPile design for building structures consists of: investigation, design, specification, and verification. In major metropolitan areas within the United States, Building Codes typically identify minimum requirements for each of the above steps. The International Building Code (ICC, 2012) is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Recognizing the ground conditions as well as piling construction means and methods can vary on a site-by-site basis, latitude is given to the registered Design Professional and Contractor to optimize the piling system for the respective project conditions. Field testing and quality control / assurance measures are typically implemented to verify the design intent is attained for the production pile elements."

"The Moose Mountain mine is located in a belt of Precambrian volcanic rocks situated 20 miles north of Sudbury, Ontario. It was the first iron mining operation in the Archean iron-formations of the Canadian Shield.The ore is believed to have been formed in an environment of active volcanism, being part of a pyroclastic and volcanic series where only the iron-formation and chert qualify as chemical sediments. The volcanic environment, subsequent regional tectonics and metamorphism produced orebodies which differ from the main sedimentary iron ranges of the world in such features as continuity, grade, structure and metallurgical characteristics. The orebodies occur as relatively small lenses which have been complexly folded, faulted and intruded by acidic and basic dykesAlthough the basic mining and beneficiation methods are simple, detailed geological control in exploration, planning and operation has been necessary to apply detailed selective techniques to the large-scale open-pit methods necessary in profitable iron mining.The milling and pelletizing processes are sensitive to minor variations in ore grade, grain size, fabric and mineralogy. Although detailed correlations of geological information and mill performance are still not entirely satisfactory, general working relationships have been determined with simple testing procedures. These are of in-creasing use in forecasting production and in ore-blending processes.The application of geology to mining and milling operations at Moose Mountain represents a departure from general practice in iron ore operations."

Epitaxial growth of GaAs 1-xPx on germanium substrates was achieved using an open tube vapor transport system. The compositional range of 0.3 < x < 0.4 was examined. The best results were obtained with (311) orientation of the germanium substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting layers were investigated using several techniques. Spectrographic analyses of the layers indicate substantial incorporation of germanium into the GaAs t-X Px layer. Evidence is presented which indicates that this incorporation occurs via a vapor phase transport process rather than by solid phase dijfu-sion. Electrical measurements suggest that the germanium thus incorporated behaves predominantly as a deep donor in the compositional range of 0.33 < x * 0.40 and has a deleterious effect upon the luminescent properties of GaAs1-x Px. The increasing technological importance of GaAs1-xPx for use in light-emitting devices has led to an evaluation of several aspects of existing growth processes. The method most commonly used to prepare GaAs1-xPx for electroluminescent device applications is vapor phase epitaxial growth on GaAs substrates.&apos;-4 In a typical electroluminescent diode structure the active region of the diode is entirely within the epitaxial layer and thus the electrical properties of the substrate are relatively unimportant since it is effectively a simple series resistance (assuming hetero-junction effects to be negligible). The use of germanium rather than GaAs as the substrate material is of interest for several reasons. First, GaAs of reasonable structural quality has been epitaxially grown on germanium4-2 and it is reasonable to expect that GaAs1-xPx could subsequently be deposited on the GaAs layer. Second, germanium substrates are readily available with both lower dislocation densities and larger areas than GaAs. Finally, single crystals of germanium are more economical than GaAs single crystals. The principal objective of the present investigation was to test the feasibility of growing GaAs1-xPx epi-taxially on germanium substrates, and to evaluate the properties of such layers with regard to electroluminescent device requirements. The approach used was to a) demonstrate epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx on germanium, and b) characterize the relevant structural, electrical, and optical properties of the GaAs1-xPx layers. The possibility of germanium incorporation into the grown layers was of special interest since there was some indication of this in previous studies of GaAs growth on germanium.5&apos;11,12 Although a study of the electrical properties of germanium in GaAs1-xPx was not an intent of this investigation, several features of the electrical properties of the layers grown in the present study which appear to be due to germanium are described. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The open-tube vapor transport system used for the epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx is illustrated in Fig. 1. This system utilizes the GaC1-GaC13 transport reaction and is similar in most respects to the larger system described elsewhere.&apos; The germanium substrates were n-type, with a resistivity of 40 ohm-cm (Eagle-Picher Co.). These were cut to the orientations of {100), {111), and (3111, and were mechanically polished and chemically etched in CP-4 (5 min at 0°C) prior to growth. In some cases, a GaAs substrate was employed in addition to the germanium. The orientation of the latter was {loo}, and they were also mechanically polished and chemically etched prior to growth. The initial composition of the deposited layer was pure GaAs. After approximately 10 microns of GaAs was deposited on the germanium substrate, the phosphorus content of the layer was gradually increased over a distance of approximately 15 microns to the desired concentration and maintained at this value throughout the remainder of the growth. Typical operating parameters used during growth are given in Table I. Selenium was used as a n-type dopant in several runs to facilitate comparison of the electrical properties of the layers grown on germanium with those of layers grown on GaAs substrates, which are usually doped with selenium. The concentration of H2Se in the gas phase was adjusted to a value which would normally yield a carrier density of 1 to 5 x 101 7 at room temperature in layers grown on GaAs substrates. The terminal surfaces of the epitaxial layers were examined by optical microscopy for structural characteristics. Laue back-reflection photographs (Cu radi-ation) were also made on the terminal surface to verify the epitaxial nature of the deposit. After these steps

Gold was initially discovered at Ballarat in 1851. After initial alluvial mining, underground quartz mining commenced in 1853, continuing until 1918. The historic miners were considered to be capable of mining anywhere in the world after overcoming the difficult conditions within the Ballarat goldfields. Whilst mining has changed dramatically since the early 1900s the challenges with underground mining at Ballarat have not. Modern pumping systems cope with the moderate water inflows. However, modern machinery and efficient mining methods influence opening sizes and extraction techniques. In some cases modern techniques have accentuated the challenging ground conditions and complex orebodies that were faced by the historic miners. As the Ballarat East project has progressed towards production, technical challenges relating to geomechanics and mine planning are being resolved resourcefully.

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) processes a multi-component ore body using a circuit consisting of two AG mills in parallel, closed with vibrating double deck screens and hydrocyclones. The bottom screen undersize feeds the hydrocyclones, but the screen oversize products can be treated in a variety of ways. The top deck screen pebbles can be crushed and then combined with the bottom deck oversize and recycled to the AG mill. Alternatively both the top and bottom deck screen oversize can by-pass the recycle crusher and be recycled directly to the mill. A full tap-off is a configuration when both the top and bottom deck screen oversize streams are stockpiled. The other configuration is when the bottom deck screen oversize is recycled to the mill while the top deck screen oversize is stockpiled - termed partial tap-off. This article reports the findings from the surveys performed to evaluate the performance of the PMC auto mill circuit when operated under the four different configurations discussed. Ore characterisation tests were performed to assess the deportment of the key ore components for the different configuration.

Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the biggest expenditure drivers in mining operations. During the last eight years, energy costs have trebled when expressed as a percentage of total running cost in South African mines. Power consumption on mines is controlled by three main strategies, namely load clipping where energy use is reduced for parts of the day, load shifting where energy use is shifted to other parts of the day, and energy efficiency where energy use is reduced permanently.To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines continuously, system optimisation studies must be completed. A part of this paper describes methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimising cooling and ventilation systems during planning and in existing operations using network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions. These models are used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling efficiency. Furthermore, an overview of refrigeration and cooling practices, and ventilation strategies is presented.Ventilation-on-demand and cooling-on-demand strategies have the potential to reduce both the capital and operating costs associated with mine ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, it has been proven that modern strategies and energy-efficient tactics are technically feasible.It is also important that the correct equipment selection is made. This must be based on the best technology with the highest energy efficiency. Where equipment replacement is being considered, energy efficiency must be one of the key decision drivers.In this paper a number of studies were presented and from the experience and the data presented it is clear that a large financial benefit is possible through optimising ventilation and cooling during the planning of mines or within an existing operating mine.CITATION:du Plessis, J J L, 2015. The only nickel smelter and the only active nickel mine in the United States is Glenbrook Nickel Co., a joint venture (50% each) of Cominco Resources International Ltd. and Cominco Ltd. In 1989, with the nickel price riding high between $2.30 and $2.70/kg ($5 and $6/lb), Glenbrook seized the opportunity to purchase and recommission a southwestern Oregon ferronickel smelter and the adjacent nickel-ore mine. This Douglas County site is only about 97 km (60 miles) due east of the Pacific Ocean, and California&apos;s border lies a similar distance to the south. Hanna Mining Co. had closed the operation in 1987. And the following year, the equipment had been largely stripped for salvage value. From November 1990 through August 1992, the mine supplied an average 5 kt/d (5500 wet stpd) of ore. Currently, with import ore supplying 40% of the smelter feed, the mine&apos;s daily tonnage averages 4.2 kt (4600 wet st). From November 1990 through August 1993, the mine has delivered 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st) of ore grading 1.22% nickel with an average moisture content of 26%. Buffaloed nickel? A nickel is not worth what it was in 1989 and neither is ferronickel, with recent prices hovering around $1.13/kg ($2.50/lb). To survive, Glenbrook has focused on increasing smelter production to lower its operating costs. And this strategy has triggered several bold moves: • a new, $30 million, port facility and • a 10-year importation contract for ore from New Caledonia, an island approximately 1000 km (625 miles) east of Australia. For a Glenbrook update, a May 25, 1993 visit was made to the company&apos;s Oregon operations - the mine and smelter near Riddle plus its new Coos Bay port facility. Unfortunately, as the rain came down that day, so did news of another temporary shutdown. The previous suspension had lasted from Dec. 20, 1992 until Feb. 22, 1993. Barely three months back to work on a wet May afternoon, more than 250 of Glenbrook&apos;s approximately 300 employees contemplated yet another shutdown, effective July 31, 1993.

The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry for their voluntary submission of injury and employment data. As the information submitted contributes largely to the promotion of safety in the industry, special effort has been made to make these questionnaires as complete as possible.

The continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) is an essential instrument for working in hazardous environments, is used to monitor real-time coal dust exposure, and is mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that it is possible for electromagnetic interference (EMI) between a CPDM and a proximity detection system (PDS) to occur. Various approaches have been taken by researchers and manufacturers to address this EMI issue. Administrative controls were recommended to keep the CPDM six inches away from the wearable PDS device. Shielding pouches were made to contain the electromagnetic (EM) emission from the CPDM. Metal shielding was added to major EM emitting components. EMI filtering with large capacitors was introduced to mitigate EMI. Most recently, a novel magnetic-field-cancellation-based approach was developed and achieved remarkable results. In this paper, we provide a comparison between these approaches. The pros and cons of each approach are presented and discussed, so that mining device manufacturers and operators can best evaluate the technology and controls that improve the health and safety of mine workers.

A flat slot is created in rock to cause stress relief effects in a pair of hydraulic borehole pressure cells (previously installed in drill holes above and below the slot ) , which act as sensing devices . This relief is annulled by repressuring the slot by means of a flat hydraulic cell . The slot pressure at annulment is taken to be the existing ground stress at right angles to the plane of the slot . A number of trial installations in the rib of a mine drift showed that for a valid determination of ground stress the sensing devices that respond to relief and repressuring must be within a specified zone close to the pressure transmitter ; otherwise the indicated ground stress may be excessive . By using an additional pair of borehole pressure cells , installed a few feet away , the existing rock stress can be redetermined at intervals , irrespective of a change of stress intensity subsequent to the initial installation . Based on these findings , equipment and procedures have been developed that make possible the installation and operation of a permanent rock stress monitoring station for observing mining - induced stress changes . The station consists of a 12 - in - wide hydraulic pressure cell cemented in a flat slot and four 2- by 8 - in flat hydraulic pressure cells in nearby drill holes . All drilling for the installation can be done with an air leg drill and conventional bits . Once the installation is completed , all required information is obtained by Bourdon pressure gage readings . The apparatus is simple , relatively inexpensive , and reliable under operating conditions in a wet mine . Unlike most methods of rock stress determination , this scheme permits periodic remeasurement of absolute rock pressure over several years , without additional drilling or instrumentation . ALL mineral production? of Can11.da is transported in a mine car at some stage during its extraction. There are as many types and varieties of mine cars as there are of mines. Many of the cars in use were developed in the blacksmith shop. Others were designed by engineers and improved by the mine foremen and the mechanics. Every mine car has the ideas of miner, blacksmith, mechanic, and engineer incorporated in it. Many of these ideas are not generally known. This paper was written to make at least some of this information available to the mining industry. In drawings, tables, and notes, it gives all the important details pertaining to the cars. It .does not recommend any particular type of car for any particular piece of work, nor does it present drawings from which a car can be built. It gives the engineer or master mechanic information on many cars which he can apply to his own particular problems. It is hoped that this information will be of use to mine operators. If a few new ideas are conceived as a result of the paper, the author will feel that the effort of compiling it has been worth while. In order to obtain the data for the preparation of the paper, a questionnaire, copy of which is here reproduced, was sent to all the operating mining companies in Canada. An accompanying letter briefly explained the purpose of the paper and asked for co-operation in furnishing as complete information as possible.

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

The Midnite Mine is an inactive, hard-rock uranium mine in Stevens County, WA. Oxidation of sulfide-containing minerals, primarily pyrite, in the ore body produces large quantities of acidic water. An interception system installed by the mining company limits the discharge of contaminated water from the mine. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have been actively involved in planning remediation of the disturbed areas. To assist in remediation, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) initiated research to determine water quality and to define ground water flow characteristics. USBM personnel designed a monitoring network, supervised installation of sampling wells, and collected and analyzed water samples. This Report of Investigations describes interpretation of data collected between December 1989 and April 1992. The computer program WATEQ4F was used to identify aqueous species distribution and to calculate potential solid phase controls of solubility. To assist in interpretation of changes in water quality between sampling locations and to develop models describing proposed flow paths, the computer program BALANCE was used. Using output from these programs and field observations, a description of the chemistry along proposed ground water flow paths at the mine is presented.

In the course of exploratory drilling during World War II by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic and Critical Minerals investigations Program, a problem arose as to the ultimate disposal of the drill core resulting from that program. The difficulties experienced in obtaining factual information to evaluate mineral deposits examined (during that program) influenced the Bureau in a decision to catalog and store the drill cores for future reference. Initially, the drill cores were stored at the nearest Bureau of Mines station that had space available for the purpose. Recently the Bureau stations at Minneapolis, Minn., and Denver, Colo., were designated as the locations of permanent drill-core storage facilities. Drill cores that are retained from Bureau of Mines mineral-exploration projects are stored at these two locations and are given preference in selecting cores for storage. Drill cores are accepted also for storage from other Government agencies, State agencies, private companies, or individuals on the basis of available facilities and consistent with the significance of the core in relation to Bureau of Mines objectives and national interest. Selection and acceptance of such drill core are determined by the Bureau of Mines. The drill cores stored at the two locations are available for inspection by any person having a legitimate interest in the mineral deposits represented by the cores. Approximately 1,850,000 feet of drill core can be stared in the facilities now available to the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 475,000 feet of drill care is stored or scheduled for storage at Minneapolis, Minn., and 240,000 feet of core stored or scheduled for storage at Denver, Colo. A list of drill core now in storage at the Bureau of Mines core-storage facilities at Denver and Minneapolis is included as appendix A.

Diamond-drill blasthole sloping has now been used for a long enough time to permit us to discuss fairly its problems from the ore-breaking angle and to attempt to peer into its future. To do this we have gathered information from many properties through questionnaires. The operators have indicated fairly well in their answers what they think of the method. The many variations of methods have by now been fairly well developed, and performance rates and. mining costs are well established at each property. All this can be laid down on paper with fair completeness. Now. knowing all this, what will the future of the method be? To attempt to look into the future of a mining method immediately brings to light many problems and variables. For instance: why were diamond drills used in the first place? What has the cost trend been? In what type of deposit has the method proved most advantageous? What will the future cost of diamonds be? What are the possible substitutes?

South Africa is a leading player in the international ferro alloys industry. Historical factors that have contributed to this dominant position include an abundance of natural resources and relatively low cost electricity. A number of relatively recent developments are potentially threatening this position. These include new legislation affecting the mining and minerals industry, a shortage of some types of suitable reductants, depletion of surplus electricity generation capacity with resultant threat of real escalation of electricity prices and pressure resulting from the recent strengthening of the South African Rand. The industry is addressing these challenges in a number of ways to ensure long-term viability. Some of these measures include investments in more efficient technologies that have economy of scale benefits and are less dependent on expensive reductants and electricity. Local macro-economic impacts include new legislation regarding ownership of enter-prises, mineral rights and royalties on mineral sales, development plans for port and rail infrastructure, as well as initiatives to expand electricity generation and coke production capacity. The fundamentals for being a successful ferro alloy producer are still largely in place for South African producers. Therefore the South African ferro alloy industry will remain competitive and is well placed for continued growth in line with the international growth in ferro alloy demand. The industry should emerge leaner, more efficient and ready to respond to any future demands of the industry. This paper will cover the present status of the industry, the factors that are impacting thereon and a view on its future outlook.

Contamination of by-product: sulfuric acid, by dissolved oxides of nitrogen (&apos;nitrates&apos;) occurs under some operating conditions encountered in sulfide roasting and smelting,, notably when oxygen-enriched air is used. This &apos;nitrate&apos; lowers the value of the acid and increases the effective cost of smelter gas desulfurization. The present paper describes measures taken at one smelter acid plant to remove this &apos;nitrate&apos;; it discusses the mechanism by which &apos;nitrates&apos; in some cases concentrate in one part of the plant and can be purged for more efficient treatment; and it describes a process developed by C-I-L Inc. for removal of &apos;nitrates&apos; from such a purge stream. Advantages of the process include very low reagent cost, recovery of all sulfuric acid values and safe handling of nitrous fumes.

The plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,&apos; which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account. 2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94" removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson&apos;s opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

TWENTY FIVE years of doing, finding, and encouraging others to do scientific research in&apos; industry, and of organizing the machinery for the` smooth &apos;and effective conduct of such research, have left me with a feeling that so far as this branch of human activity is concerned the problems in &apos;essence are- not, materially &apos;different from those met elsewhere. Years ago, in a less mature period of life, I may have thought that the effective industrial research man was a being somewhat different from his fellow workers in adjacent &apos;fields, but I have long since &apos;changed my views. The rank and&apos; file of the modern industrial research organization are relatively easy to find, though some¬times difficult to get in sufficient numbers. Mistakes in choosing them are not particularly serious to the or¬ganization, however unfortunate they may be for the misplaced individual who persists too long in the wrong environment. The reason for this is obvious from the fact that, taken by and large, the work of the rank and file is at best necessarily a work of detail done under guidance of the more experienced. In this respect the situation of the rank and file in an industrial research organization is not different from that class in any other group activity, whether concerned with industry, the university, or the church. This does not mean, however, that we are not all anxious to have the best possible material obtainable in the rank and file, or that we are indifferent to the utmost of encouragement and stimulation to its individual members.
