DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

EXPERIMENTAL work conducted at the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory of the University of California by L. C. Uren, J. Domercq, Jr., and J. Mejia has shown that small diameter wells offer tremendous resistance to the flow of fluids in their immediate vicinity. This resistance is due in part to the constriction of the area through which the fluids must pass as they approach the wall of the well, but is also accentuated by the increased volume which results from gas expansion. The latter in turn is a function of the deduction in pressure, the fundamental cause of fluid movement. If the diameter of the bore is enlarged several diameters, the capacity of the well, or the volume of fluid passing per unit drop in pressure per unit of time, is greatly increased without necessitating such high fluid velocities. The fundamental features which should be taken into consideration in the design of casing joints were stressed by J. B. Graham and E. E. Smith. These involved such points as correct thread design, high efficiency, and small diameter, together with the insurance that leakage will absolutely be prevented. The practical features of such design were ably discussed by engineers from leading steel manufacturers.

Explosive properties are typically summarised on manufacturers’ technical data sheets. The values most commonly referred to are the density of the explosive, the energy it is expected to release and its velocity of detonation (VOD). This information is provided so that blasting engineers can make a considered selection of the most appropriate product for a particular blasting application. As an example, a lower VOD and energy product is better suited to blasting in soft, weathered material. In contrast, blasting hard, competent material generally requires a higher energy product which is usually characterised by higher VOD and energy.A review of the technical information supplied by manufacturers shows a wide range of methods of reporting both VOD and energy. A meaningful comparison between products from different suppliers is almost impossible to achieve based on these data. For a similar product, one supplier may have a VOD range of 2800–5800 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 1.34 while a corresponding product from another supplier is quoted with a VOD range of 3100–6300 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 192. In the end, the user has to rely on the level of confidence available from their experience using a certain type of explosive in the type of rock to be blasted at that mine.This paper reviews some of the technical and supporting information that is freely available in the literature and attempts to provide some clarity as to what the numbers that are reported actually mean for the end user. Controversial strife, whether fortunately or unfortunately, is a crucible through which all new discoveries in science, and all technical applications of science must pass-a test which they must all endure before they can become so vitalized as to germinate, so to speak, take root in the human mind, grow tip, and overspread the earth. The greater the number and the power of the elements arrayed against such a growth, and of the influences hostile thereto, the greater should be the inherent vitality of the germ, the more strenuous, skilful, and persistent its cultivators and upholders. During the decade last past we have had, in spite of the severe stringency of the times, an active growth of this kind in progress, whose prospective importance it would now be difficult to overrate. "Predicting the performance of plant-scale comminution circuits is essential to monitor the energy use and product size distribution, allowing us to control and optimize the whole process. In the light of this issue, with the assist of recent technologies, simulation techniques utilize the chance of putting the theory into practice in the most accurate way. For this purpose, this study aims to evaluate and optimize the efficiency of a plant-scale ball mill circuit by using perfect-mixing ball mill model on a simulation environment. The comminution circuit is selected from a specific copper-ore processing plant in Turkey. The essential parameters which are required for this study such as fresh feed Bond work index, size distribution etc. are determined by laboratory experiments. The forecasted data which are calculated by third-party software will be compared by the industrial operating data, in order to determine the performance of comminution circuit. In addition to that, this methodology provides a greater ability to analyse, optimize and understand the comminution circuit of ore treatment plant. The authors believe this work will provide supplementary data for further studies on simulation and subsequent optimization of comminution circuits.INTRODUCTION By the assist of mathematical models of the grinding mills and classifiers, simulation of the grinding circuits become more common in comminution because it is relatively economical and able to consider many variables simultaneously. It’s proceeds depends on the accuracy of the models and capability of reflect real operations. Computer-based simulation studies would provide the quantified information about the effects of the proposed changes on the comminution circuit performance in terms of size distribution, mass flow rates, equipment efficiency etc. Then the mentioned data used in order to check the suitability of the current equipment to the modified conditions, and for equipment selection. The outputs of circuit could also be used to estimate downstream flotation circuit performance because the general aim in this study is to The aim of the study is to investigate optimum operating variables and achieve p(80) size of 57 µm and 64 % of -36 µm particle in hydrocyclone overflow stream, which is optimum for that porphyritic copper ore for best concentrate recovery after flotation process in specific copper ore comminution circuit by using modelling and simulation techniques. Sampling survey was carried on the fine ore bin in order to perform Bond work index test and determine work index value (Wi). Thereafter mass balancing, using the size distribution data and tonnages, models for ball mills and hydrocyclone were developed. Finally, the circuit performance were investigated by computer simulations via JKSimMet software."

INTRODUCTION In June of 2004, at the North American Tunneling Conference in Atlanta, an all-day workshop was conducted to review the application of Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs) for underground construction. The moderator for the program was Bart Bartholomew, former President of Fruin Colnon Construction Company. The program involved commentary by a panel of engineers, owners, contractors, and legal representatives within the North American tunneling industry, as well as an extended audience discussion. The panelists were: Peter Douglass, President, Peter Douglass, Inc. Randall Essex, Executive Vice President, Hatch Mott MacDonald Joseph Gildner, Deputy Director for Technical Services, Sound Transit Randall Hafer, Esq., Kilpatrick Stockton Robert Fitzgerald Esq., Watt, Tieder, Hoffer, & Fitzgerald Kirk Samuelson, Senior Vice President, Kiewit Construction Group DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAM FORMAT The focus of the program was to assess the state of the practice in the preparation of GBRs, and to discuss improvements that could and should be made with regard to their preparation, interpretation, and application. The approach used to achieve this focus in the broadest possible way was unique, in that it involved the panelists’ preparation of the workshop format and materials months before the presentation of the workshop. First, each of the six panelists was selected by the moderator based on their reputation and involvement in their respective fields of expertise, taking care to maintain balance and contrast within the collective pool of talent assembled. Following selection and agreement to serve on the panel, each panelist was asked to independently submit to the moderator a list of the six most pressing issues involving GBRs that they each frequently encountered in their individual professional experience. Each was asked to rank their issues in descending order of perceived importance. This process resulting in a pool of thirty-six potential or “candidate” issues for use in the workshop program. Contrary to the moderator’s expectations, there was surprisingly little duplication among the thirty-six issues submitted.

This paper looks at two ways to estimate the bulk mineralogy of the rocks for assay intervals. The aim is to find an efficient indicator of the most common minerals in the rock. Phase (modal) analysis has traditionally been done using visual methods such as point counting and image analysis. A modern version of this process is the X-ray point counting routine using the SEM-EDS based software. These methods are too slow and expensive for routine analysis of bulk sample mineralogy at the normal assay spacing.Two sources of data were considered that provide information that can be used to determine the mineral abundance in assay samples. The most widely applied method is (semi-) quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). The QXRD method is most applicable to major minerals and has limited application to minerals at low abundance. The nominal detection limit is 0.5 per cent. Values below five per cent have large errors. A second, less common, method is calculation of mineralogy from chemical assay data. Conversion of chemical analyses to mineralogical analyses depends on the unique chemical composition of each mineral. Elements only found in one mineral are easily accounted for, but many compositions are ambiguous. Deciding on the actual mineralogy is not simple. Recalculation of mineral mode from chemical analyses is more accurate than QXRD when the correct minerals, and mineral compositions, are known.Where only a few QXRD analyses are available they can be used to setup a protocol for calculation of mineralogy from assay data. Linear programming works well in this environment. The best results are obtained when both H2O and CO2 are directly measured. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) should be included if these are not available.Where both QXRD and chemical analysis are available for all samples, the best results are obtained using the least squared method to merge the data sets assuming QXRD has much higher analytical errors than chemical assays. The combined method provides more robust results because the high abundance minerals are controlled by the QXRD measurements while the chemical assays improve the precision for low abundance minerals

"Pinchi Lake and Bralorne Takla mercury mines; Canada's only producing mercury mines during the past war (1939-1945); occur within the Pinchi Lake mercury belt. This belt is in central British Columbia; and is approximately 150 miles long extending from southeast of Fort St. James northwest to the headwaters of Omineca river.During the field season of 1937 cinnabar was discovered by J. G. Gray of the Geological Survey in Permian limestone on the north shore of Pinchi lake, where the main showings of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine were later developed. Following the publication of Gray's report claims were staked in the spring of 1938, and later that year were optioned to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, and in June 1940 a reduction plant with a rated capacity of SO tons a day was brought into operation. In 1943 the plant had a capacity of more than 1,000 tons a day. The grade of ore treated was reported to average S to 10 pounds of mercury a ton, and production during the years 1940 to 1944 exceeded 4,000,000 pounds. The Bralorne Takla mercury mine, which is 90 miles northwest of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine, was brought into production in November 1943 with completion of a 50-ton mill. During the next 10 months more than 100,000 pounds of mercury were recovered, and the grade of the ore was reported to average 15 to 20 pounds of mercury a ton. During the war, production from these two properties was far in excess of Canadian requirements, and Canada was able to supply the United Kingdom and United States with part of their need.s. Both properties ceased operations during 1944, and, due to an excessive supply of mercury, have not yet reopened. The Pinchi Lake mercury belt lies along a northwest-trending major fault zone called the Pinchi fault zone (Fig. 1). This zone is approximately 150 miles long and varies in width from 200 to 1,000 feet . It forms the northeastern edge of a northwest trending fault belt up to 10 miles or more wide in places. In general the northeastern margin of the Pinchi fault zone represents the contact between closely folded, stratified Permian rock:s on the southwest and Mesozoic formations and Omineca intrusions on the northeast. It seems probable that the fault zone marks the site of major thrust faulting from the southwest and that the Permian rocks moved up with respect to the Mesozoic formations. Intense faulting occurs in the Permian rocks within the fault zone. There the more important faults trend north and northwest, dip steeply west and southwest, and may join a major low-angle thrust fault at depth."

In this article we present Sustainable Value, a valuation methodology to assess sustainable value creation of companies. Sustainable Development posits that decisions must not only take into account economic capital but also natural and social capital. Sustainable Value, the methodology presented in this paper, borrows the idea from financial economics that the return on capital has to cover the cost of the capital. Capital costs are determined as opportunity costs, i.e. the forgone return that would have been created by an alternative investment. By expanding the well established logic of the valuation of economic capital in financial markets to also cover natural and social capital we provide a methodology that allows an assessment of the most efficient allocation of economic, natural, and social capital for sustainable value creation in companies. We demonstrate the practicability of the methodology by the valuation of the sustainability performance of British Petroleum (BP).

The $300 million West Side Combined Sewer Over?ow Project consists of over5.5 kilometers of soft ground tunnel, an 833-million liter per day (220-MGD) deep shaft pump station, 3 kilometers of micro tunneling, and other miscellaneous shafts and pipelines. The construction contract, underway since September 2002, is a reimbursable cost plus fixed fee contract that included a quali?cations-based contractor procurement process and has undergone some modi?cation since execution. This paper will describe the contractual issues addressed to date, dispute resolution, where improvements can be made, and how an Owner can evaluate whether this type of contract is the best approach for an underground project.

Procedures of mining high-calcium limestone underground at the Kimballton mine of the Standard Lime and Cement Co. in Giles County, west-central Virginia, are described. Drilling and blasting procedures area discussed in detail, and direct mining costs are tabulated in percentage of total cost. Output, about 1,725 tons of limestone a day, is attained with heavy trackless equipment by the room and pillar method of mining modified by benching floors. Operating features include underground air compression, electric-eye control of curtained doorways, use of a single jumbo drill rig for all drilling, and an effective plan for maintenance of equipment. The company's safety program has contributed to an outstanding safe mining record. The mine is integrated with a plant on the property which converts the stone to metallurgical and chemical grade lime.

"The topic of ground movements in Germany has been studied extensively in the past, especially in the field of active mines. The active hard coal mines were finally shut down in 2018 in Germany and lignite mining is expected to take place only until 2038. The so-called long-term liabilities of the mine operators in Germany include, among other things, the long-term guarantee of stability and thus the monitoring of ground motion.So far, the economic use of underground mining in Germany was mainly the supply of raw materials. In the future, the underground storage of compressed air, methane, or hydrogen will play an important role in renewable energy supply and climate change. Therefore, underground storage space will become more important and spatial planning is essential to ensure availability of safe underground openings for the various options of environmentally friendly energy storage.However, this renewed usage of underground openings may also bring new and sometimes unknown challenges of geomechanical influence. On the one hand, the aftermath of hard coal and lignite mining will be an increasing challenge in mining subsidence engineering. On the other hand, new possibilities due to underground spatial planning may lead to subsidence and/or heaving of the upper surface.INTRODUCTIONBoth hard coal and lignite have a long tradition in Germany. The Prosper Haniel mine in the Ruhr area was closed at the end of 2018 after 150 years, which signalled the end of hard coal production in Germany. Lignite mining still takes place in the Central German, Lausitz, and Rhineland districts. However, lignite mining in Germany is expected to be phased out gradually by 2038 (MDR, 2019). With the closure of these mines, however, mining damage is not over. The long-term consequences of mining, which extend far beyond the closure of the mines, are associated with the liability and responsibility of the individual mining companies. The so-called eternity burdens on the mining company continue to apply. In the field of lignite production, the discontinuation of dewatering and the resulting possible elevations of the surface will be a relevant topic for the future of mine surveying. The same applies to the hard coal mines, which are partially flooded in Germany and therefore require extensive monitoring of soil movements in the future.The discontinuation of energy from hard coal and lignite calls for a change in the energy mix. With the renewable energy revolution in Germany, the focus is on a sustainable and environmentally compatible climate and energy policy based on renewable energies. Sustainable use of the subsoil, both natural and anthropogenically produced cavities, will play an essential role in the objectives of this policy. For example, disused mine cavities can be used to store electricity from renewable energy sources. (Umwelt Bundesamt, 2018) These functions will again cause classical ground movements such as subsidence and uplift, but will also bring new challenges for the mine surveyor. Challenges can be underground cavity exploration in inaccessible areas or legal aspects of underground competition."

Bored cast in situ piles are highly susceptible to construction defects like necking, discontinuity in concreting, poor compaction of concrete, improper end bearing condition due to inadequate cleaning of bore hole, exposure of reinforcement, segregation of concrete etc. There is a necessity to understand the behavior of piles so as to design effective foundation system. In this paper investigations of two field cases were discussed to bring out the effect of defective piles. In one case improper end bearing has been discussed for a concrete pile of length of 45m and diameter equal to 1.2 m and is reinforced with 32 no's of 28mm diameter steel bars and in another case necking of the pile has been discussed. Further model piles with preformed defects have been tested in laboratory to bring out the influence of defective piles.

Roof support, an important aspect of ground control, involves maintaining roof competency to ensure a safe and efficient mining environment. Wide variability in rock quality and stress distributions requires a systematic approach to roof support design that satisfies specific goals. The success of past roof sup-port in reducing the incidence of roof falls has been primarily attributed to safer roof bolting practices. However, roof falls continue to be the number one occupational hazard in underground coal mines. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents a general overview of roof bolting and other roof support methods used in the United States. Characteristics of bad roof and associated roof failure theories are briefly presented as background to roof support. Methods of detecting and monitoring roof behavior and/or bolt performance provide essential feedback on roof support requirements. A discussion follows on roof bolt design that assimilates roof and support parameters into useful equations or nomographs to help decide what bolt types to use and how they should be installed under different roof conditions.

The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc., and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the 'New Missouri Lead Belt' (See Figure 1). Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated about 1,100 feet below the surface at an elevation 270 feet above sea level, the flat lying sinuous ore bodies are up to 250 feet wide, 85 feet high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite, Access to the mine is through two 18'Ø concrete lined vertical shafts - one for servicing and the other for hoisting ore (See Figure 2). The mine is being worked by a modified room and pillar method using both rubber tired equipment and a sub-level rail haulage. Ore is broken from first pass headings, back and bench faces and transported by load-haul-dump units to ore passes located on 900 foot centers. The ore is pulled from chutes on the sublevel 90 feet below into 15 ton bottom dump cars and delivered in 10 car lots by a 15 ton diesel locomotive to a 42" gyratory crusher (See Figure 3). A recent innovation has been the introduction of two 50 ton trucks with plans to haul up to 60% of the ore on the mining level to an ore pass feeding directly to the primary crusher (See Figure 4). Ventilation raises up to 16'Ø, which were originally planned for 900 foot centers, are now driven on 450 foot centers.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from potash companies operating in the Permian basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 14 to 19 percent K20 and 3 to 5 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high clay content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions for clay disaggregation and removal as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation from the scrubbed material resulted in acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 59.6 to 60.4 percent K.0 values can be obtained. Continuous pilot plant beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation resulted in concentrates containing 58.8 to 59.8 percent K20 with recoveries of 69.7 to 81.4 percent of the K20.

The Gulf Coast, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Brownsville, Texas, is one of the largest high energy consuming areas in the United States. This region has areas of very high industrial density. The lower Mississippi River from Baton Rouge past New Orleans has a high industrial density. Lake Charles, Louisiana, the Orange-Beaumont-Port Arthur area, Houston (4 separate areas) and Corpus Christi all have the same high industrial density. This situation developed due to good transportation, good labor conditions, good weather and the abundance of cheap energy-gas and electricity. Obviously the latter had the greatest impact. The availability of cheap natural gas made Gulf Coast sites very attractive to energy intensive industry such as metals and petro-chemicals. The area was also very attractive to refinery development due to the large supply (endless?) of crude oil available. As we all know, the energy situation has changed dramatically in the last five years. The cost of a MMBTU has risen from the 17¢ to 19¢ level to a price of $1.95 to $2.10. The price of interstate gas, as defined by the National Energy Plan recently passed by Congress, was approximately $1.98/MMBTU escalated to October, 1978. It goes without saying, that this has had a major impact on doing business in the Gulf Coast. As fuel prices soared, different companies responded in different ways; but overall, industrial energy consumption along the coast was reduced 20% to 25% from 1974 to 1975. Since 1975 production and energy use has been increasing, however, production at some plants is still significantly below plant capacity.

Ideal utilization of the heat energy in coal should theoretically be secured by supplying each atom of combustible material present with the exact quantity of oxygen necessary for complete combination. An intimate and equal admixture of the fuel particles with air is therefore to be sought. Coal, or the combustible substances of which coal is composed, may be used in solid or liquid or gaseous form. The use of coal in small particles intimately mixed with air is, in effect, a specification of coal in pulverized or dust form. There has been much important development of this manner of using coal, which may be instanced as the outstanding advance in the use of coal as a solid. The completeness and efficiency of combustion in a properly designed dust-fired furnace permits the use of locally available coals of inferior quality, and enables them to be used commercially instead of imported coals of better quality. That is to say, some grades of coal of low calorific value, that are not economically useable in lump form on grates, are useable in pulverised form, because of the more complete combustion thereby obtained, and the consequent more efficient results. In the case of coals that are unsuitable for steam-raising in grate-fired furnaces, because of clinker troubles, (arising usually from a combination of high sulphur content and low-temperature fusibility of the ash content) use in pulverised form has obvious advantages, and in addition gives the benefit of any heat units that are contributed by free sulphur in the coal.

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. BH Note: This price list stresses the point that the number six strength cap should be used with all high explosives. It’s interesting that duPont chose to continue to supply the lesser strength caps – but lowered the price of the #5 or #6 to be closer to that of the #4 and #3. There were imports of the lower strength caps at the time that had to be competed against, hence the price reductions. Another interesting point on this price list is the noting on the “Red Cross Explosives” page that these explosives reduce the danger incurred during the operation of thawing. As noted many times in these articles, this problem was not to be solved for about another 16 years or so.
