Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

Slags have many useful functions in iron and steel making. In particular, slags are used to remove impurities such as sulphur, phosphorus and inclusions from the metal, and a large amount of research has been done in this area. Slags also insulate the metal thermally and form reactions with the atmosphere such as reoxidation and nitrogen pick-up. However, slags serve other more unique functions, several of which are reviewed in this paper. The role of slags in new iron smelting processes with regards to reduction of ore and gaseous desulphurization are discussed. In iron smelting processes, much of the reduction occurs by the reaction of carbon in the char and the metal suspended in the slag with iron oxide dissolved in slags. The slags also react with the gas resulting in sulphur removal from the process. The mechanisms of these reactions and pilot plant data for these processes are given in this paper. Slag formation within ferrous burden materials affects the cohesive zone and the performance of the blast furnace. Recent theoretical and experimental findings on this topic are presented. In the electric arc furnace, foamed slags are used to allow for higher power operation and productivity. Of particular interest, foaming in stainless steel production is more difficult than for normal steels. The foam index, or the ability of the slag to foam, for stainless steelmaking is similar to that for carbon steelmaking slags. The poor foaming is due to the lack of gas generation for the foam. Methods to increase foaming in stainless steelmaking are discussed.

Flotation, water-washing cyclones (hydrocyclones) and spiral concentrators are the three process units most commonly utilised in fine coal preparation. The results of testwork conducted on these three units will be presented and their performance and separation characteristics examined in detail. In particular, the dependence of the separation characteristics of each unit on particle size and the constraint this places on product quality (ash and sulphur levels) will be discussed. This dependence will be shown to be a critical criterion in the selection of fine coal circuits.

Iron ore, when subjected to reducing gases at a temperature suitable for reduction of the oxide but not high enough to melt the ore or metal formed, is converted into metallic iron. The product, being the original piece of iron oxide minus its oxygen, is sponge-like in appearance when viewed under a magnifying glass, and hence is called 'sponge iron. Sponge iron was probably the form in which some of the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge developed into a low shaft furnace known as the high bloomary, in which iron was produced in the form of a pasty mass. These furnaces were increased in height, and with increased temperatures came the production of liquid cast-iron, at first undesirable because of lack of knowledge of methods for working it. In 1340 the first true blast-furnace was built iri Belgium. Some castings were made, but the greater part of the iron was converted into wroughtiron blooms by a crude puddling process. Charcoal was the universal fuel until the latter part of the seventeenth century, when coke was first used in England. Larger scale developments of methods of refining pig-iron followed. In I 885 Bessemer built his first converter in England, and within a few years the Siemen' s regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England, to produce steel. Then followed the enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron. The idea of a direct process for the production of iron and steel has persisted during all of this time.

"In recent decades HPGR technology has proven itself in comminution circuits of mining plants. High technical and economic performance, lower specific energy consumption and reliability of HPGR equipment makes it an efficient alternative to conventional circuits using stage crushing and rod/ball milling, as well as to AG/SAG circuits. However, despite all the advantages of this technology the correct selection of key and auxiliary equipment is very important since errors at testing and design stages may lead to discrediting of the whole concept of HPGR application. There is a great variety of possible circuit configurations using HPGR, e.g. with circulation of edge product, with crushing of the whole discharge and circulation of screen oversize, successive two-stage crushing, etc. Each type of minerals will require its own optimal crushing circuit. In this context the testing methodology for selection of an optimal configuration becomes of prime importance. It is common knowledge that the best simulation of material crushing and softening within a HPGR can be obtained only in the course of a large-scale pilot test. The main approaches applied to this kind of testworks are described in this article. Special aspects of HPGR technology design and industrial operation are revealed as well. Some operational issues of HPGR equipment and of circuit as a whole were detected. They are related to regions specifics, plants location, and other factors. Process solutions proposed to deal with these issues are also indicated in the article. INTRODUCTIONDesign and construction of the processing plants involving High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) technology becomes more and more common in mining as this technology has specific technical and economic advantages against the circuits with autogenous/semiautogenous mills (AG/SAG) and other circuits. The main advantage of the technology is low energy consumption and low operation costs respectively. The presence of microcracks and increased content of fine size fractions in the crushed product contribute to reduction of energy required for further ball grinding. Besides, HPGR technology applies a special wear resistant liner that enables significant reduction of operation costs of grinding media and liner comparing with AG/SAG circuits."

In this paper I will attempt to present an up to date review of the type of exploration' that has previously been carried out in Alaska, discuss some of the more significant past producers and recent discoveries, and suggest some approaches to future exploration. Hopefully this information may be of some use to those parties tempting to evaluate Alaska's non ferrous, non placer, metal potential or contemplating initiation of exploration in the state. II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Past production of non ferrous metals from lode deposits in Alaska has been meager considering the size of the state. Since there have been no major lode mines operative in Alaska since World War II, and since logistical conditions vary throughout the state, it is not possible to generalize with respect to mining costs in Alaska as compared to those in other areas. There seems to be little question, however, that a major deposit situated in a reasonably favorable location' could be profitably operating at present. Host of the known metal prospects in Alaska were discovered by early gold prospectors prior to World War I. From World War I through World War II exploration consisted chiefly of surface prospecting by prospectors on a diminished scale, as compared to the early gold rush days, drilling of some prospects by the U.S.B.M,, and occasional mine or prospect evaluations by mining companies. From the end of World War II to the present time, there has been a generally steady increase in exploration by mining companies consisting chiefly of prospect and district evaluations, large scale aerial reconnaissance programs in search of color anomalies, and regional drainage geochemical surveys. The post World War II increase in mining company exploration has not been matched by an increase in conventional surface prospecting.

Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. This study shows that the ventilation and gas management systems of the Parvadeh_1 mine are in line with the standards of Australian underground mines.CITATION:Hasheminasab, F, Aminossadati, S M and Bagherpour, R, 2017. As a result of past developments, mainly at universities, the coal industry has had access for a decade or more to a number of computer programs for coal mine planning. Using some of these programs Bethlehem Steel's Research Department in 1969 launched jointly with Bethlehem Mines Corporation an extensive research and development program aimed at: (1) testing the capabilities of these programs through trial applications as the need and opportunity existed, (2) defining what additional capabilities were required to make mine planning computer systems fully useful in the hands of Bethlehem's mine-planning engineers in the field, and (3) developing and implementing in the field the mine-planning systems agreed on. This program is now nearing completion, and several of Bethlehem's operations routinely use the planning tools that were developed. The progress of this research program is discussed in terms of our initial trial applications of computer methods to mine planning and the incorporation of several innovative features into our new set of computer programs, in particular, the use of time sharing, data base management systems, and general-purpose simulation languages.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a serious health hazard to the U.S. mining workforce who are potentially exposed to RCS [1,2] as various ore bodies are drilled, blasted, hauled by truck, crushed, screened/sized and transported to their destinations. To examine a method for assessing RCS exposure using a NIOSH-developed video exposure monitoring (VEM) technology (referred to as Helmet-CAM), video and respirable dust concentration data were collected on 80 miners across seven unique mining sites. The data were then collated and partitioned using a thresholding scheme to determine exposures that were in excess of 10 times the mean exposure for that worker. Focusing on these short-duration, high-magnitude exposures can provide insight into implementing controls and interventions that can dramatically lower the employee’s overall average exposure. In 19 of the 80 cases analyzed, it was found that exposure could be significantly lowered by 20 percent or more by reducing exposures that occur during just 10 minutes of work per eight-hour shift. This approach provides a method to quickly analyze and determine which activities are creating the greatest health concerns. In most cases, once identified, focused control technologies or behavioral modifications can be applied to those tasks.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

"IntroductionTWO METHODS of mucking have been used in sinking C shaft, the five-compartment production shaft of the Yellowknife property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited:(a) Band mucking during the original sinking in 1949 and 1950 (l); and(b) Mechanical mucking with the Cryderman shaft mucker during the recent deepening in 1954.This paper briefly describes the recent deepening and compares the performance figures of the two sinking operations.PlanningProduction planning in 1952 showed that it would be advisable to deepen C shaft in 1954 to provide for three new production levels and the installation of an underground crusher. To complete the required shaft work it would be necessary for a shaft crew to deepen the shaft about 500 feet, to partly excavate three level stations and a crusher station, and to cut a station for the loading pocket. Figure 1, a vertical section of the lower part of the shaft, shows the details of the deepening programme.During the planning period, Giant had a rather small supervisory staff and at the same time was experiencing a heavy labour turnover. As it was obvious that production would suffer if the sinking crew were recruited at the mine, it was decided that the merits of contracting-the shaft sinking to an independent contractor should be investigated."

Suddenly, mining has been thrust into the limelight. It has a large image that casts its shadow over New Zealand. Is it any wonder that resistance has heightened and that an almost unprepared populous is currently struggling to protect the very land they hold dear. Next to the atomic bomb, mining has the demonstrated power to massively change the land and its side effects can pollute many miles beyond the operation. During the past year, New Zealand concern over the possible effects of the mining proposals has become acute. This was specially so in the areas of special environmental quality, such as the Coromandel, and here a very unhappy situation has arisen.

However, coal washing, the methods of which are highly Similar to the concentrating methods for ores, is included In the work of the Nonmetallic Minerals Division to facilitate administration and to avoid duplication of equipment. During the fiscal year most of the work of the division was done at the experiment stations in College Park, Md. Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Seattle, Wash.

On the Continent, ferromanganese has been produced in the blast furnace almost continuously since 1876, but little definite information concerning the practice is to be found in technical literature, and almost nothing in the way of a theory of the manganese furnace. In this country, prior to 1904, but one company had attempted its production in a serious way, and none of the operating data or other information from this company has been, or is, available to the public..In the last 5 years, as a result of the restriction of imports, a number of furnaces have been blown in on this alloy, with the result that in 1918 as many as 18 furnaces were in blast. The majority of the men in charge of these furnaces had had little previous experience in such operations; so the Bureau of Mines, in the summer of 1918, undertook the collection of data from ferromanganese furnaces. Operating data were collected by the Bureau from eleven ferromangahese furnaces, which will be referred to throughout this paper as furnaces A, B, C, F, G, I, J, K, L, M, and P; the dimensions of seven of the furnaces are given in Table 1. Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. This paper is one of a series dealing with the mining and crushing methods and costs of the nonmetallic industries, prepared under the sponsorship of and in cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines,. The quarrying methods described in this paper are those used at the Monocacy trap rock quarry which annually produces from 450,000 to 500,000 tons of crushed stone. This property is located 3 miles east of Birdsboro at Monacacy, Pa., and is one of the three quarries operated by the John T. Dyer Quarry Co. Throughout the paper an effort is made to explain the various methods used and the cost of operation.

"A Z1600 Jameson Cell Test Rig was rented for test work at Vale’s Clarabelle Mill operation. This paper discusses the evolution of renting the unit for test purposes to owning the unit and operating it as a revenue generating process component. The paper focuses on three aspects of the Z1600 project; the initial rental and installation, the test work performed in the cleaning circuit, and the business factors which led to the unit being permanently incorporated into the copper circuit.INTRODUCTION Clarabelle Mill is located in Sudbury Ontario (approximately 350 km north of Toronto) on the southwest rim of the Sudbury basin a meteoric impact crater that is 62 km long and 30 km wide. The result of the meteoric impact was concentrated nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and platinum group metal (PGM) ore bodies in the outer perimeter of the basin; described in more detail by Hanley (1957). Vale currently has seven operating mines in the Sudbury basin, from which nine distinct ore types are mined. Ores are also received from two QuadraFNX mines. Clarabelle Mill processes all of these ores for the Ontario Operations of Vale. The mill, commissioned in 1971, was originally built as one of four mills operated by then Inco Limited. Between the late 70’s and the early 90’s process changes were made to consolidate the Sudbury Operations milling processes into a single operating mill, Clarabelle Mill. In 1990, the SAG mill was installed resulting in peak mill throughput of 11.9 million short tons per annum (Mstpa), with typical throughputs of ~10 Mstpa. Mill average feed grades were 1.4% Cu and 1.2% Ni. During the resources boom, plans were developed to increase the mill capacity at Clarabelle Mill in stages to a final capacity of 13.5 Mstpa. The project known as the Clarabelle Mill Expansion and Recovery Project (CMERP) included expansion and reconfiguration of the grinding and flotation circuits. The first stage was a planned increase in grinding capacity with the reallocation of existing mills, the existing flotation capacity would be required to treat higher throughput until the new flotation circuit was constructed."

In this issue, the Bureau of Mines announces the availability of the latest of its Mineral Perspectives series: ?MP-4, mineral Industry of Western Europe." This publication describes the mineral industries of 19 Western European countries. For readers unfamiliar with this new series, reproduced below and on the two succeeding pages, is the section dealing with the mineral industries of France. Information regarding acquisition of this publication is found inside the back cover of this issue. FRANCE France is a moderately important producer of minerals, including iron ore, coal, potash, fluorspar, and uranium. In addition, France is a significant processor of imported minerals, chiefly for its own consumption. In general, it has exportable surpluses only of a little iron ore (low-grade ore exported to Luxembourg) and some nonmetallics.
