For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines-in cooperation with other agencies-has been making investigations and compiling and publishing reports and statistics on accidents in the various branches of the mineral industry.4 Its assistance has been enlisted also in health, safety, and ventilation problems' incident to the driving of many large tunnels in the United States in recent years. As part of this work the Bureau has compiled considerable statistical and other information on accident experience in the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry. It has always been difficult to obtain up-to-date information on tunneling methods and tunnel accidents. Published accounts of tun¬nel construction furnish much interesting material of engineering, historical, or fiscal value, but usually little or no attempt is made to discuss and critically analyze the means taken to preserve the health and life of employees.

Various electrical and electromagnetic (EM) geophysical techniques are currently being evaluated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for their effectiveness in the detection and monitoring of electrically conductive (1 to 5 S/m) lixiviant (leach solution) to depths of 600 m, either above or below the water table. These techniques include magnetotellurics (MT) , controlled source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT), resistivity and focused resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), frequency-domain electromagnetics (FEM), and time-domain electromagnetics (TEM). Of these techniques, TEM may be the most effective, but CSAMT and focused resistivity also hold promise. Geophysical computer modeling of the borehole TEM technique was conducted based on an idealized geoelectric section (layered earth) with characteristics based on the Santa Cruz porphyry copper deposit near Cas a Grande, AZ. Layer resistivities and thicknesses were obtained from geophysical data and geologic logs available from the site. Modeling of borehole TEM in both preleach and during leach situations was conducted. Simulating the TEM method using computer modeling proved to be encouraging since there were substantial differences between leached and nonleached responses. The modeling does not prove the effectiveness of TEM in the field, but does indicate that detection of deep lixiviant zones is theoretically possible.

Longhole open stoping was introduced in the zinc-rich 'B' lode at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) during 1968. Since then one longitud- inal and a series of transverse longhole open stopes have been developed. The longholes are drilled using Gardner Denver airtrac drilling jumbos and the broken ore is loaded from drawpoints and transported to chutes using Wagner ST5 scoop- trams. The holes were drilled from sill stopes 160 ft apart. The width of an emptied transverse longhole stope was successfully widened by blasting rings of blastholes drilled parallel to the stope wall. Proposed stope and pillar designs for a series of transverse longhole open stopes were assessed using a method of finite element analysis, applied to a longitudinal section through the area. Blastholes have been surveyed for dip and bearing using an Eastman borehole survey camera. The data produced has provided the basis of a study of blast- hole deviation. Deviation of boreholes is considered to be the major cause of the formation of benches in longhole stopes.

"This paper analyzes mine emergency management and rescue practices in German underground coal mines and compares them to those used in the United States. The German mining industry has developed these practices over more than 100 years, and they have successfully managed numerous fire, water inundation and ground control emergencies using these techniques. The authors interviewed German mine emergency professionals about rescue team and emergency operations. These operations were then analyzed to determine which of these German principles would be of interest to United States mine rescue teams. Implementing these programs into United States mine rescue and emergency operations was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Coal mining has become much safer industry than it has been in the past. Advances in safety and health regulations and company polices have improved working conditions for miners all over the world. Even with these advances there is still a need for continued attention to safety and health. It is also important for mine safety professionals to observe practices and procedures in other countries and cultures and learn what and how to apply this knowledge in their own systems. Coal mine rescue has been an integral part in improving coal mine safety. Mine rescue procedures have evolved with time, experience and technology development. Today, coal mine rescue teams are still needed and must be continually trained and prepared for any mine emergency. Although it is hoped that improved mine safety policies and practices will eliminate coal mine disasters in the future, accidents remind us that disasters can still happen today. In May 2014, Turkey experienced a severe coal mine disaster where 301 people were killed [G.Tuysuz, 2014]. Our industry must learn from these incidents, focusing on disaster prevention and making improvements in mine rescue operations. Mine rescue procedures differ from country to country due different regulatory environments and different historical evolution of emergency response. Sharing practices and procedures from one country to another enables learning from different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Sharing is also a way of preserving information, identifying and learning best practices."

Injection of inert gases to combat mine fires has been practiced in various parts of the world for a long time. Of late, nitrogen has become the preferred inert gas for control of mine fires and safe salvage of longwall equipment as compared to carbon dioxide or fuel gases produced from burning of fuel. In India, carbon dioxide has been used for fire fighting in a number of mines during the 1960s and 1970s. More recently inert gas produced from burning of fuel oil in surface plants has been used in controlling the atmosphere in fire areas in two mines. In yet other cases, liquid nitrogen has either been poured directly into fire areas in liquid form or injected in gaseous form to keep the fire in check. Nitrogen produced in liquid form in an oxygen plant is more costly than nitrogen produced from PSA (pressure swing adsorption) based plants. A PSA-based plant has been installed in one of the Indian mines in 1986 and more are in the offing. This paper reviews the application of various inert gases in Indian mines and discusses the likely trend of inert gas application in Indian mines in the future.

Creep tests were carried out for friction welded joints of AZ31 magnesium alloy rods under an ambient atmosphere at temperatures between 423 and 573K. Tensile tests were also performed at temperature from room to 573K. The obtained results were compared with those of the base metal. AZ31 extruded rods of 19 mm in diameter were joined by brake type friction welding machine. Creep and tensile specimens were machined out of the welded rods. The tensile strength of the joints was almost the same as that of the base metal at room temperature. However, joint efficiencies of welded joints were about 92% at above 373K. The elongation of welded joints was lower than those of base metal. The welded joints showed appreciably higher minimum creep rate and shorter rupture time than the base metal at all the tested temperatures and initial creep stresses. Creep and tensile rupture of the joints always occurred at near the weld interface. Thus, friction welded joints of AZ31 alloy showed lower creep and tensile strength than the base metal at elevated temperature.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 295 natural gas samples from 18 States collected during calendar year 1963 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Five previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,998 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity , prior to 1963. The first three , Bulletin 486,5 Bulletin 576,6 and Bulletin 617,7/ contain analyses and source data on 5,214 gas samples collected from 1917 to January 1 , 1961. The fourth and fifth publications , which are published as Information Circulars , supplement the three Bulletins and contain 784 analyses of samples collected during 1961 and 1962. The present Information Circular is the third annual publication supplementing the three Bulletins .

Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of similitude theory in predicting the draft of a rubber tire loader’s bucket during initial penetration. The work uses 1:16 and 1:8 scale models of an 18-t capacity load haul dump, scaled with the Buckingham Pi Theorem, to evaluate the prediction of draft and penetration under different operating and different dynamic conditions. The authors hypothesize that the observed relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and the operating and dynamic conditions will hold true for an upscaled model. Similarly, the authors hypothesized that the results of experiments conducted with the smaller scaled model should predict the draft on an upscaled model. The results show that the relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and operating and dynamic parameters are similar for both scaled models. Similarly, the draft on the upscaled model, predicted by using the experimental results of the small model, is similar to the measured draft on the upscaled model. The mean difference between the two is 1.71 N with 95% confidence interval of [-3.51, 6.93], which is very good given the average draft is approximately 330 N. Thus, the work indicates that both hypotheses are true for draft. However, the work shows that scaling muck pile particle sizes using the Buckingham Pi Theorem is not adequate to ensure good predictions of penetration. This work provides insights that will help design engineers to acquire useful data on scaled models and use it for various analyses on heavy machinery.

The goal of this 42-month contract was to increase safety in low-seam underground coal mines through development and in-mine evaluation of a temporary roof support system for roof drills and floor-riding operator compartments for a loader and shuttle car. The program was performed in three phases. During Phase I, state-of-the-art canopy technology was investigated, and preliminary design and mock-up evaluations were performed for temporary roof supports for single-and dual-boom bolters and for transverse-mounted floor-riding canopies for a shuttle car and coal loading machine. The shuttle car and loader canopies were approved for further development, and the design, fabrication, testing, and certification were completed in Phase II. In Phase III, the Bureau of Mines furnished an FMC 6L shuttle car fur use in the evaluation of the canopy for 45 shifts. The shuttle car canopy was evaluated at Virginia Crews Coal Company in West Virginia. Efforts to secure an evaluation site for the loader canopy were unsuccessful. The loader canopy was shipped to Bruceton for possible future evaluation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated preheating of continuously fed, fragmented ferrous scrap charges by furnace offgases and utilizing substitutes for imported fluorspar to condition electric steelmaking slags. Three types of continuous scrap charging procedures were investigated to determine electrical energy consumption in a I-st (short ton) electric arc furnace. Cold and preheated scrap charges were continuously fed at rates averaging 37.5 and 43.7lb/min, respectively. The feed rate varied appreciably from test to test owing to hangup of the scrap in the charge bin. Approximately 7 pct less electrical energy was consumed in melting scrap preheated to 8400 to 1,1100 F by furnace off-gases than in melting cold scrap. Overall energy consumptions were 888 kW'h/st for cold scrap, 829 kW'h/st for preheated scrap" and 637 kW'h/st for conventional backcharged scrap. Stack gases from scrap preheating averaged 1200 F and a flow rate of 1,615 scfm compared with 2200 F and 1,302 sefm for cold-charged scrap. Slag conditioners tested included synthetic fluorspar, boric acid, hydroboracite, used aluminum potlining wastes and aluminum anode tailing wastes, and Sorelflux B. The boron-containing conditioners fluidized the slags the best, followed in order by the conditioners containing fluorine and titanium.

This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The cleaned gas is then piped to the main works for heating purposes, being used with tar to fire the steel furnaces, and also the soaking pits and reheating furnaces.BLAST FURNACES.The company is at present operating two Blast Furnaces of 800, and 1000 tons nominal daily capacity respectively. Gold present in arsenopyrite matrices is refractory and requires highly oxidative pretreatments in order to obtain acceptable degrees of extraction. However, these release many byproducts that are harmful to the environment. In the present work, a high-grade arsenopyritic ore was pretreated with different solutions, containing hydroxide ion, EDTA, oxalic, tartaric, or citric acids, to improve gold extractions in a posterior leaching step. The pretreatments were carried out at room temperature for 24 hours with a respective ligand concentration of 0.25 M. Once completed, the residue was leached in a thiosulfate solution to quantify the effect of the pretreatment on gold extraction. Only 29% of the gold content was leached, with very slow kinetics, in the untreated mineral. However, after pretreatment with tartaric or citric acid, the kinetics improved, although the percentage of gold extraction only reached 42-45%. The highest gold recovery, with very rapid kinetics, was found with the oxalic acid or the hydroxyl ion pretreatment (70 and 62%), respectively, but also corresponded to the most arsenic co-dissolution.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a four year (1985-1988) mineral assessment of the Juneau Mining District in southeast Alaska as part of its ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. Following an extensive literature search, the Bureau investigated mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the area. This report describes the results of Bureau work in the Eagle River area of the Juneau gold belt; a component of the Juneau Mining District comprising 87,000 acres between the Mendenhall Glacier and Berners Bay. Gold and silver have been the only metals having significant production from the area and occur mainly in quartz stringer and fissure type veins hosted by phyllites, greenschists, greenstones, altered diorite dikes and quartz diorite gneiss. Gold also occurs in several small placer deposits. Approximately 21,100 oz of gold and nearly 9,000 oz of silver were produced over a 60 year period. Currently, the only mining activity consists of some exploration and minor placer gold production. Inferred and indicated lode gold resources having mineral development potential total approximately 796,000 tons with a weighted average grade of 0.22 oz/ton gold.

This final report reviews installation, maintenance and inspection of mine pager telephone installations. A Technical Handbook was developed and distributed. Certain commercial telephone test equipment was modified and a tone source and switching circuit were developed for use in the testing of mine pager phone systems. Descriptions are included of the modifications to a commercial test set and of a tone source/ switching unit.

The presence of an extensive soft siltstone layer in the middle of the inter-burden sequence of rocks at Syferfontein Colliery in South Africa prompted tests to determine the effect of different mid-column decks of inert material in the siltstone layer. The objective was to achieve significant cost savings in explosives use whilst not degrading dragline productivity. An important factor that had to be considered was that the initiation systems available in South Africa are not accurate enough to ensure simultaneous initiation of explosives decks in a hole.

The amount of material extracted from each blasted ring in sublevel caving mines is vital when deciding the overall mine production target. The orientation of the production drifts is normally perpendicular to the strike of the orebody, and rings are blasted from the hanging wall side to the footwall side in a retreating manner. For an inclined orebody, a given ring will contain different amounts of material based on its relative position along the production drift. This layout creates a distinctive problem with respect to the extraction ratio optimisation along the axis of the production drift. This paper describes the current drawpoint control strategy practiced at LKAB and presents the variation of drawpoint performance parameters along the production drifts. It uses automatically generated data from a bucket weighing system that measures tonnage drawn per bucket, and it classifies the blasted rings into four zones based on their relative position along the production drift. It considers the loading procedure for blasted rings at Kiirunavaara mine and analyses the variations in drawpoint performance along the production drift. The paper finds that although the current draw control strategy is sensitive to ring position along the drift, it could be modified to optimise the final extraction ratio.CITATION:Shekhar, G, Gustafson, A, Boeg-Jensen, P and Schunnesson, H, 2016. In ventilated tunnel fires, smoke and hot combustion products may form a layer near the ceiling and flow in the direction opposite to the ventilation stream. The existence of this reverse stratified flow has an important bearing on fire fighting and evacuation of underground mine roadways, tunnels and building corridors. In the present study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a CFD program (fire dynamics simulator) based on large eddy simulations (LES) is used to model floor-level fires in a ventilated tunnel. Specifically, the critical ventilation velocity that is just sufficient to prevent the formation of a reverse stratified layer is simulated for two tunnels of different size. The computer code is verified by checking the computed velocity profile against experimental measurements. The CFD results show the leveling-off of the critical ventilation velocity as the heat release rate surpasses a certain value. At this critical ventilation, the ceiling temperature above the fire reaches a maximum for both tunnels. The velocity leveling-off can be explained from this observation. An extended correlation of Newman (Combust. Flame 57 (1984) 33) is applied to the temperature profiles obtained by CFD. At the critical ventilation, temperature stratification exists downstream from the fire. The computed critical ventilation velocity shows fair agreement with available experimental data taken from both horizontal and inclined fire tunnels. The CFD simulations indicate that the Froude modeling is an approximation for tunnel fires. The Froude-scaling law does not apply to two geometrically similar fire tunnels.
