A tool is being developed to predict and visualize the microstructural evolution of steels during quenching. This tool utilizes experimental data and reference data that are stored in a database to predict the microstructural development. The visualization tool animates qualitative representation of two- dimensional microstructure drawings as well as the quantitative volume fractions of phases present as a function of time. This is achieved by superimposing the Jominy End-Quench test results over the Continuous Cooling Transformation diagram of the alloy. The predicted microstructure is presented through the web browser to maximize the ease of use. In addition, a parallel coordinate system is used to aid in identifying similarities within the data set by presenting the large number of data at a glance. The results for 4140 steel that was quenched in a wide variety of quenchants will be presented to illustrate the prediction and visualization tools. ARE we a "have" or a "have-not" nation in our domestic supply of metals and minerals? Impinging on the ears of a people weary of war and faced with the problems of reconversion to peace, the import of this question has built up with the momentum of an avalanche. Stemming from statistics cited by Pehrson and accelerated by the pessimistic and possibly biased statements of Ickes, hardly an issue of any technical periodical dealing with mining has appeared during the past year but within whose pages was to be found some comment, some discussion of the question: Are we a "have" or a "have-not" nation? We have proved commercial reserves of high-grade iron ore in the Lake Superior region sufficient for 22 years, based upon the prewar rate of consumption; commercial copper reserves to last only 34 years, one fourth being inferred ore; zinc sufficient for nineteen years, over half being inferred; lead for twelve years, two thirds of which is inferred; mercury for only three years. So read the figures. Although admitting that these figures may be extended by new discoveries, by the use of marginal and submarginal ore, and by further technological advances, are we nevertheless to assume complete pessimism in the acceptance of the meaning of these statistics; are we to expect a rapidly increasing dependence upon foreign sources of mineral supply; are we to believe that we are at or near the peak of the "metal age" as has been held by Theodore J. Hoover? Or is some more optimistic viewpoint possible?

AT the end of September, ' the metal-producing industries were almost prostrate, the production of fuels was largely curtailed, there was a fair degree of activity in general manufacturing, while retail trade was moderately good. Looking at industry on the whole, there was a large percentage of unemployment, the degree of which has increased, progressively, month by month since the beginning of 1921. There is the prospect of much destitution and misery this winter; yet while' in some, quarters, idle workers are already being fed from, commissaries; in other quarters profligacy; in "spending continues, unabated. Amid this confusion in conditions there is;' much that appears paradoxical, but in fact it is not so and indeed everything is running pretty true to form: Such activity in production as there is to be seen is mainly in textiles; - leather goods, foodstuffs, etc., i.e., consumption goods for immediate use. Even in hard times 105,000,000 people must buy a good deal of clothing and food. Besides this there is indispensable repair work and- maintenances. Thus, the good business of the year in white lead for painting. The chief uses for the metals, however, are in the production of capital goods, and except for occasional and special reasons nobody in his senses is capitalizing anything at present prices for labor. Hence several millions of men are idle. The impoverishment of Europe and the exhaustion of her credits adds to this by curtailing our export trade.

The present work proposes a distributed collaborative immersive virtual reality framework for prospective applications in the mining industry. A human-centered approach is described, with people being placed in the central position and surrounded by tasks that are to be carried out. Those tasks can be then achieved through synchronous or asynchronous communication, interactions using properly constructed user interfaces, virtual and/or augmented realities and computer vision. Several examples of such arrangements are presented. One of the applications facilitates an e-learning experience by providing a very familiar object – a book – as a target for users to interact with. Importantly, this system has the potential to provide an ‘enhanced’ teaching medium, as humans tend to remember events/situations better when they experience those events in person, when the immersive factor is involved. The immersive virtual reality environment enables a user to interact physically with various 3D objects and experience behaviours, which in turn reinforces the idea that doing leads to learning. This prototype system can be implemented as an efficient and cost effective e-learning and training platform for different engineering domains. At another level, the same technology can be used in the tele-operation of mining equipment for the future mine.

CONSIDERING the nature of this audience, I perhaps, in addressing you on the subject of air transportation as related to the mining industry, should speak with tongue in check or at least with some reservation. I know full well that many of you, veterans in the great mineral development in Canada, are perhaps more conversant with the overall aviation picture than I, for aviation to you has been the means to an end, and in many instances has been part and ?parcel in the success of your particular projects, in the form of the initial means of transport. I feel, however, that we in this room today have somewhat parallel geographic interests - yours in relation to what is in the ground, mine in the air - and also in the forests and in the streams - aviation, hunting, and fishing - things which have occupied my attention practically all my adult years. In the light of what has gone. before, and in view of present developments, I think you will agree with me when I say that I do not think there could be a more intriguing pursuit than playing a hand in rolling back Canada's tremendous northern frontiers, even if, at this stage, we have made but slight impression on the untold opportunities which lie in our wide-spread, undeveloped areas.

Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. "Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software. The olfactory system (sense of smell) is crucial to the ability of fish to avoid predators, recognize kin, and synchronize reproduction (Baldwin et al. 2003). Copper (Cu) has been shown to impair olfaction in juvenile freshwater life stages of salmonids (including Pacific salmon and trout) in some laboratory experiments; and in the United States, public concerns have been expressed that current regulatory criteria for Cu in fresh water are not adequately protective of olfactory function in salmonids (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). These concerns have largely been raised because some Cu concentrations that have caused olfactory impairment in salmonids in the laboratory are less than Cu concentrations that have been shown to reduce salmonid survival, growth, or reproduction (the effects endpoints that are typically considered in deriving ambient water quality criteria). However, two important and interrelated points that must be considered: (1) freshwater Cu criteria are "driven" by the sensitivities of several invertebrate species that are more sensitive than the olfactory impairment threshold in salmonids when (2) the influence of water chemistry on Cu bioavailability is properly considered in deriving Cu criteria. Bioavailability refers to the ability of various chemical forms of Cu to interact with receptors on the surface(s) of organisms and thus directly cause toxicity or uptake by the organisms. The toxicity of Cu and other metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry. For example, acute Cu toxicity in fresh water generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase (Meyer et al. 2007). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recommended hardness-based freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu and other metals since the 1980s (e.g., USEPA 1985); and hardness-based metals criteria decrease (i.e., become more restrictive) as water hardness decreases. More recently, the USEPA has recommended freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu based on the biotic ligand model (BLM; USEPA 2007), which accounts for the influence of multiple water chemistry parameters, including DOC, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+, Mg2+, and several other cations and anions. The BLM-based Cu criteria generally decrease as DOC concentration, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness decrease. Because DOC has a stronger influence on Cu bioavailability than water hardness, hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria can differ considerably. For example, in water that has low DOC and high hardness, the hardness-based Cu criterion would be relatively high (because it is driven by the high hardness) but the BLM-based Cu criterion would be relatively low (because it is driven by the low DOC). Thus, any evaluation of the protectiveness of Cu criteria against a given effect, such as olfactory impairment, must properly account for the chemistry of the exposure water. Meyer et al. (2013) compiled data on Cu-induced olfactory impairment and olfactory-induced behavioral effects from tests in which BLM parameters were measured. They demonstrated that the USEPA's BLM-based freshwater life criteria for Cu are protective against olfactory impairment, because it adequately accounts for water chemistry (whereas the USEPA's hardness-based Cu criteria are not consistently protective). Olfactory impairment by Cu is now receiving increased attention in Canada and Europe (e.g., Wall 2013; Stang 2013). Accordingly, in this paper we have expanded the analysis of Meyer et al. (2013) to consider copper guidelines from various other countries and whether these guidelines are protective against olfactory impairment.

"In a study of the chemistry and pathology of chronic benzene poisoning, which was conducted cooperatively by the United. States Bureau of Mines, the Barrett Co., and the producers of benzene, it was necessary to make quantitative determinatious of the abzorption, distribution, and: fate of benzene in the organism. Although methods for determining benzene in relatively large amounts were available no satisfactory method was found for removing and determining the small amounts that are present in the tissues or excretions after exposure to conditions which ultimately cause chronic poisoning. This no doubt accounts for the lack of information in the literature on this particular phase of benzene poisoning.The writers have found in work that will be described in a subsequent publication that the amounts of benzene present in the tissues and excretions under conditions of exposure which produce chronic benzene poisoning arc of the order of a fraction to a few milligrams per 100 grams of tissue. This report describes a method developed and found satisfactory for these determina¬tions.RÉSUMÉ OF PERVIOUS METHODSA method for the determination of benzene in tissue was developed by Joachimoglu. 5 In the Joachimoglu procedure the ground organs are mixed with water and acidified with diluted sulphuzic acid, and the benzene is distilled into a receiver containing carbon tetrachloride. The benzene is nitrated in the carbon tetrachloride, the carbon tetrachloride evaporated, the acid mix¬ture neutralized, and the dinitrobenzene extracted with ether. After removal of the ether the dinitrobeuzene is determined gravimetrically. Joachimoglu reports that this method is about 55 to 60 percent quantitative."

Artificial intelligence techniques are ever more frequently implemented in the modern world. One of their numerous uses is supporting enterprise management. Intelligent techniques and intelligent information technology (IT) systems can be implemented in mining-related issues as well. The author of this article concentrates on supporting the process of planning mining operations by intelligent systems and techniques. The author also underlines the importance of knowledge accumulation in a mining enterprise (especially tacit knowledge) as well as its efficient storing and using. Additionally, the author provides a short description of characteristics of intelligent IT systems and indicates their capabilities in planning mining operations. She presents two solutions, namely: an advisory system which supports the process of planning preliminary works and exploitation works in hard coal mines, and a method of modeling and optimizing mining operations. Finally, the author indicates a few possible future development trends of intelligent systems - the intelligent systems of decision support.

"The use of such methods and apparatus as the Dautriche method and the Mettegang recorder for the determination of the rate of burning of black blasting powder and other strictly burning explosives has been found to give such erratic results that no reliance can be placed on the data thus obtained. Consequently, investigators of those factors which may affect the burning rate, such as size of grain, absolute density, chemical composition, and means of ignition have had to rely mainly on observations made during practical use for determination of the part played by each. Such tests are very difficult of interpretation.The purpose of this paper is to describe a method used by the explosives division of the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of such explosives and to present the results of an investigation using that method.The investigation was concerned with the effect of grain size, initial pressure, and means of ignition on the rate of burning or rate of pressure development of black blasting powder as compared with pellet powder.The Bichel pressure gauge was used for these tests, with the slight modification to the apparatus and method described in U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 15.4 These modifications consisted of reducing the speed of the revolving drum on which the time-pressure record is taken, measuring the speed of the drum by a belt-driven tachometer, and introducing an induction coil in series with the electric squib or electric detonator to mark on the time pressure record the instant at which the squib or detonator was fired."

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. "Wireless technologies are permeating the mining and metals industry and enabling a myriad of benefits. With standards such as IEEE 802.11 for wireless devices and ISA100.11a for wireless field instruments protecting their investments, customers look to benefit from the cost and flexibility offered by wireless devices. Using wireless field instruments, plants are eliminating the costs associated with wired system by 50 to 70% and using these savings to install more field instruments, which, when used smartly, enables them to optimize their processes efficiency and equipment reliability. Wireless also empowers a mobile workforce by allowing them to have access to key process and maintenance data directly from the field. This paper describes how wireless can help operations and maintenance personnel to be more effective. A mathematical model was developed to study fluid flow and solidification in a single-roll casting system. Fluid flow coupled with energy equations were solved numerically using a finite volume method. A body-fitted coordinate transformation technique was adopted to handle the irregularly shaped domain. In order to couple the continuity and momentum equations, a SIMPLEC algorithm was used. A fixed-grid enthalpy method was considered to model the solidification in the system. The turbulence effect on flow field was modeled using a low-Re k-e model The model developed in this work was further run under various conditions to optimize the operating parameters of the process.

This paper, the 1965 Airey Memorial Lecture, reviews the world-wide technical advances in iron and steelmaking, and offers an appraisal of the new techniques which will be applied in the future. After a review of blast furnace operations, the continuous steelmaking process is described, and the resulting techniques of degassing and continuous casting are discussed at length. Pressure pouring, hot rolling, cold rolling and coating practices are also outlined, and considerable space is devoted to the direct reduction process. Finally, the application of the computer to steelmaking operations is discussed in some detail.

"INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each investigative project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. A STATEMENT on this subject by A. D. Turnbull, presented and discussed at the Annual Business Conference of the Metallurgy Division, C.I.M., held in Ottawa on April 22nd 1957, led to creation of a committee "too see if the Metallurgy Division of the C.I.M. can improve this situation". Without discounting the general problems of education and short-ages in other fields, the committee is primarily concerned with deficiencies related to metallurgy. The committee members are: F. R. Archibald, Chairman, A. D. Turnbull, L. E. Djingheuzian, J. U. Mac-Ewan, and L. M. Pidgeon. Following exchange of views among the committee members a general attitude of approach was established and a background of reference material assembled. It is the purpose of this review to acquaint those interested with the reference material, to offer an appraisal of the situation, and to suggest a programme for action by the Metallurgy Division of the C.I.M. Before proceeding with the ?presentation it is fitting to point out that, notwithstanding some rather important developments in public concern for educational matters, as well as changes in the level of activity in the metallurgical industry, the statement (April 1957) by Mr. Turnbull still stands as a sound article of reference.

There are two major gold recovery methods: the hydrometallurgical technique, which employs cyanide solutions, and amalgamation method, which involves mercury (Hg). These methods present considerable health, safety, and environmental concerns. Past applications of alpha-cyclodextrin (α-CD) on gold scraps show that α-CD is not only inexpensive, but is also environmentally friendly. This research work used α-CD to recover gold from gold ores instead of gold scraps. The gold ore was sourced from Shanono gold deposit site Kano State,Nigeria. The gold ore was characterized by fire assay (FA) for the precious metal. The concentrate was digested with aqua regia (AR) for 24 h. Modified AR, where hydrochloric acid was replaced with hydrobromic acid, was used for the gold digestion due to the good match in molecular recognition between gold bromide ion (AuBr)− and α- CD in a second sphere coordination complex. The digestate was characterized using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Gold recovery using this technique is pH sensitive, and five pH values (2.0, 3.6, 4.0, 5.4, and 6.0) were investigated. FA analysis showed the Shanono gold ore deposit contains an average of 4.71 ppm of gold, AAS analysis showed highest gold recovery of 69% at pH 4.0, which is lower than recoveries from the metal scraps. This could be due to the presence of other gangue minerals closely associated with the ore. However, gold recovery using α-CD on Shanono gold ore has shown to have a higher yield of 69% compared to 35.5% yield obtainable by Artisan Small Scale Miners using mercury.
