THE gold mining industry, in Canada as in other countries, has passed through trying times in the past year. The strains and stresses of war have drawn away much of its man-power, both from the labour and the management. The urgent needs of the war machine have greatly curtailed the amounts of steel and explosives that can be allotted to the mines; and the loss, by enemy action, of supplies of such essential things as rubber, bids fair to reduce operations still further, if not cripple them entirely in time. And, as if these difficulties were not enough, war on the psychological front has been declared on the gold mines. Earnest supporters of the war effort, well-meaning theorists, and perhaps others whose intent is less disinterested, have all combined to clamour against the continuance of gold mining. We have been asked, what is the use of taking gold out of one hole in Canada to put it into another in Kentucky. We have been assured that gold will never again have any value, except for filling teeth. We have been repeatedly adjured to look at Germany, how well it has got along without gold. We have been told that it is unthinkable, when this nation is girding her loins for war, that labour and materials should be diverted to this useless effort. Gold miners should be diverted to the base-metal mines, where they can produce something of real value to the war effort; or to war factories; or, in fact, almost anywhere, so long as they are got out of the gold mines. And, what has made the situation even more disturbing, it has seemed as if all this clamour might be convincing governments. In fact, as you all know, the government of the United States did actually take the step of ordering its gold mines to cease operations. Fortunately, however, for Canada, the facts that no large favourable effects resulted from that action, and that, in Canada, gold mining is a much larger part of the national economy than in the United States, have caused our government, so far at least, to avoid this drastic step. In talking about this, however, let me emphasize that I have no more inside information on the subject than any of you. Like Will Rogers, all I know is what I see in the papers.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from four potash companies operating in the Permian Basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 7 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high slime content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions and washing of the ore as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale physical beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals and the development of ore-dressing systems by flotation resulted in obtaining acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 58.7 to 60.4 percent K20 with recoveries of 71.0 to 83.4 percent 0f the K20 values can be obtained.

Obuasi Mine in Ghana, with more than 100 years of mining history, developed from a surface operation into a deep >2000 m underground gold mine. The challenge is to extract value from narrow veins left after extensive mining in the wider ore zones of the mine. Since the merger of AngloGold and Ashanti Goldfields in 2004 the mine strives to achieve optimum extraction through an integrated Mineral Resource management process from geological modelling, resource evaluation to mine design and scheduling. The shear hosted gold deposit displays complex secondary shears of variable thickness and continuity. There is an ongoing process of changes taking place in the way that geological modelling and resource estimation is done. Recent developments include the use of computerised systems that support the whole resource management chain from resource modelling to reserve optimisation. The change in thought and technology now allows for targeting narrow veins previously ignored in optimisation and mine design since moving into mechanised mining. The increased knowledge and confidence in the resource models now allows for flexibility in mine design, selection of mining method and scheduling and extraction of the reserves. The focus area for change is the way the orebody is evaluated and extraction designed. Since 2005 major changes were made to the process. This paper considers the historical approach of resource management. It looks at the individual process changes and qualifying the way ahead.

Gold dissolution with bromine was studied by using the rotating disc technique. Geobram TM 3400 was used as a source of bromine. The parameters studied were: rotating speed, Geobrom 3400 concentration, pH, temperature, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid concentration, and the concentration of various cations (copper, iron, zinc, aluminum, manganese, potassium and sodium) and anions (chloride, bromide, sulfate, nitrate, and iodide) According to the Levich plot and activation energy, gold dissolution was controlled by a chemical reaction rate. Copper, iron, and manganese in their highest oxidation states, aluminum, zinc, sodium and potassium did not have any effect on gold dissolution rate. The presence of manganous ion dramatically decreased the gold dissolution rate. Kinetic performance of bromine, in the form of Geobram TM 3400, was compared with performance of cyanide and thiourea.

The decision to develop an ore body can lead to multi-million dollar profits, or equally substantial losses. Accordingly, the effort required to adapt a valuation model to the specific proposal at hand, or even the development of a new model from basic principles, is clearly warranted. In the formulation of a model of this nature, one is faced with some major questions. For example, with the long term obligations that it implies, on what basis should a decision to initiate mining operations be made? Furthermore, how can the vagaries of inflation and the uncertainties that shroud the future be accommodated? Beyond the general principles by which mineral deposits are evaluated, specific cost behaviour is a function of the geology of the deposit, and of the mine design. Moreover, mine design, during the life of the mine, must be a continuing process somewhat akin to dynamic programming. An initial, apparently optimal, design is selected and mining commences. With production, a continual process of information updating leads to revisions. Thus if the maximum value is to be obtained, the mine design must be adjusted to conform to the changed conditions.

A field study was undertaken to experimentally measure the concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) contained in the process streams generated by a group of 20 coal preparation plants located in the eastern USA. For each site, representative samples of clean coal product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse were collected. Each sample was then partitioned into preselected size and density classes by wet screening/sieving and float-sink testing. The resultant products were dried and subjected to laboratory analyses to determine ash contents and rare earth element concentrations including Yttrium and Scandium. A detailed analysis of the database generated by this exercise showed that coal-based products from these preparation plants contained significant quantities of rare earth elements. In particular, the coarse refuse streams currently discarded by the 20 plants examined were found to contain a sufficient tonnage of REEs to satisfy the current domestic demand for these important elements. The data also showed a strong positive correlation between ash content and REE concentration, which suggested that the primary association of REEs in eastern USA bituminous coal sources is likely within fractions containing inorganic impurities. This association was well described using a simple power equation relating ash content and REE concentration. The ratio of heavy-to-light rare earth elements was discovered to be significantly higher in organically rich fractions of clean coal, suggesting that mineral impurities intimately associated with carbonaceous matter have elevated concentrations of heavy rare earth elements. A similar trend was observed for a grouping of rare earth elements (Y, Nd, Eu, Tb, and Dy) that are likely subject to near-term supply shortages. Finally, the database showed that a linear correlation existed between La for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some high-value REEs (Lu, Pr, and Tb).

"For a drainage channel built in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a value engineering (VE) proposal incorporating a secant pile top-down approach saved time and facilitated construction work on the larger flood control project. The channel, at the Bechara Industrial Area, Puerto Nuevo Port Facility and the Puerto Rico Maritime Shipping Authority Dock, was needed to allow drainage of the Rio Puerto Nuevo into San Juan Bay. The port area, one of the busiest in the Caribbean, has over 6,000 ft (1,800 m) of berthing wharves for ocean-going container ships along with over 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m²) of container loading and unloading areas, and is critical to the local economy.Planners wanted to minimize the impact of construction to the port and dock users, and developed a construction methodology and work sequencing that would prevent a complete barrier to port traffic. This plan involved non-contiguous and limited work area that “leapfrogged” along the alignment so as to prevent long barriers to lateral traffic movement across the culvert alignment.After reviewing the project plans and schedule, Morris-Shea Bridge Company (MSB) proposed an alternate design and construction approach that provided significant cost and schedule benefits, and also provided better access for the port and dock users. The alternate VE proposal involved top-down construction methodology and redesigned drainage culvert geometry with two parallel 2,000 linear ft (lf) (600 m) secant walls installed on each side of the culvert. These walls facilitated excavation and formed part of the culvert permanent walls. The result was a significantly reduced required construction right of way that allowed construction work in contiguous areas largely without impact on ongoing port activity. MSB conceived the design concept, and engineered design and construction of the VE alternate secant pile culvert.The project initially consisted of an open channel in the industrial area picking up water from the existing Rio Puerto Nuevo, transitioning to an enclosed culvert through the port and dock areas, and outfall through the existing dock. The intent of this manual is to provide guidelines for observing and documenting the installation of ACIP piles. The manual may also serve as a guide for the training of inspection personnel. It is expected that the general guidelines and procedures described in this manual for the inspection and installation of ACIP piles will be supplemented by engineering judgment, local practice, and experience. ACIP pile construction procedures will vary depending on soil, rock, and groundwater conditions. This manual represents a wide range of possible applications in a variety of projects. It is not intended to be applicable in all situations nor replace engineering judgment for any given project. Therefore, an all-inclusive inspection manual is not considered practical or desirable. This manual should not be used to interpret or replace project specifications. It has, however, been prepared to complement the Augered Castin- Place (ACIP) Piles Manual model specification (DFI, 2003).

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. "The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

The mineral industry in India is an important contributor to the country?s GDP and foreign trade, and also a significant source of employment generation. The industry is distributed almost all across the country and has operations in some of the remotest areas, where it has also served as a sole source of infrastructure development. India produces 89 minerals, out of which four are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals. The mining leases are occupying about 0.21% of the total land mass of the country. Indian mining industry is characterized by a large number of small operational mines (approx 3000 mines). Appropriate systems have been put in place to ensure sustainable growth of the sector, which include formulation of procedures for scientific prospecting and mining and development of a mechanism of prior environmental and forest clearances for mining projects. Main emphasis is to protect the health and safety of mine workers, as well as to safeguard the interests of indigenous people through rehabilitation and resettlement packages. Efforts are under way to mainstream the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in order to promote equity in the mining industry. The issue of scientific closure and reclamation of the abandoned mine sites poses a major challenge. Present paper illustrated several initiatives have been taken in this direction along with case studies, which could be replicated in other parts of the country.

The study site in northeastern Illinois underwent surface mining for coal in 1943 and was reclaimed by the state of Illinois in 1972-1973. Additional soil amendments and seed were applied to the spoil surface in 1975-1980. Previous studies in 1975-1978 had shown that the surface spoil materials and five final-cut lakes at the site were quite acidic and the lakes contained high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals. Surface runoff water from monitoring plots in 1976 were only moderately acidic and the mean concentrations of most dissolved metals and sulfate in the runoff waters were less than 25% of the concentrations found in Lake B. By 1980, vegetation had become well established over most of the mined area. However, the five final-cut lakes (Lakes A-E) remained acidic. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the physical and geochemical subsurface conditions of the spoil materials, the hydrologic flow system within the spoils, and the magnitude of acidic spoil leachate migration into the lakes and into the wetland prairie north of the mine site. Lakes A, B, C, and E were still very acidic in 1980-1981 (pH range: 2.9-3.4; aridity range: 110-860 mg/L as CaCO3). Lake B had the worst water quality, with mean concentrations of dissolved aluminum, iron, manganese, and sulfate of 75, 25, 37, and 3340 mg/L, respectively. Shallow groundwaters in spoil materials around Lake B had a lower pH and about two to four times greater concentrations of aridity, aluminum, manganese, zinc, and other metals and nearly 20 times greater dissolved iron than the water in Lake B. The shallow groundwaters in undisturbed soils and bedrock 10-30 m north of the mine site spoils generally were alkaline, but did contain occasional moderately high sulfate and metal concentrations. Pumping tests and recovery tests conducted in piezometers showed hydraulic conductivities of spoil materials ranging from less than 10- to 10-5 m/s; hydraulic conductivities of natural soils and bedrock were measured between 10-10 to 10-7 m/s. Water levels in spoil materials increased rapidly in response to rainstorm events and the recession curves were relatively quick to decline, lasting only two or three days. Quick infiltration of rainfall into the spoil surface and percolation down to the water table caused a rise in groundwater levels and movement of spoil groundwater into the lakes. This groundwater component in the lake water budgets could account for most of the water quality problems occurring in the acid lakes.

"The complexity of a modern flotation circuit makes it susceptible to disturbances such as changes in feed, ore mineralogy, equipment degradation, poor measurements and faulty instruments. Good measurements and a robust control system are critical to create and maintain a stable and optimum flotation process.This paper focuses on the development and implementation of process control applications in the flotation circuits at Xstrata Nickel’s Strathcona Mill ( referred to as the mill hereafter ) in Sudbury, Ontario. Following the path of ‘stabilize-improve-optimize’, basic controls to stabilize process variables such as flotation cell pulp level, air and reagent addition rates, cleaning-column feed and wash-water rates have been established. Factors such as best practice in pulp level and valve position measurement, feedforward control and the application of an appropriate control philosophy, have contributed to the significant reduction in process variability. For instance, standard deviation reduction of 79% for the Ni impurity in the column Cu concentrate grade was experienced and is shown. The variability reduction of the flotation circuits’ key process-variables paves the way to further improve and optimize flotation performance. A grams-per-metal unit reagent addition control scheme has been improved upon, particularly for different operating scenarios and better robustness. In addition, following significant stabilization of the primary controls and columns feedrates, Cu/Ni separation cleaning-column bias-control (cascaded to the wash-water rate) and hold-up control (cascaded to air flowrate) have been developed and tested. This strategy – from stabilization to optimization - is expected to achieve a more consistent control of final concentrate grades and improve recoveries.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is considered the most important and value-added process in the milling metallurgical plant and is still undergoing continuous evolution to treat greater tonnage and different ores (Wills, 2006). Starting over three decades ago, with the advent of on-line slurry content analysis devices, flotation automatic control has received persistent interest and a large number of applications have been reported (Thwaites, 1983, 1986 ; Mckee, 1991). Bergh and Yianatos (2011) reviewed different aspects of process control in flotation circuits and have evaluated the applicability of model predictive control to the process. Mckee (1991) analyzed the difficulty in developing lasting/robust process control applications for flotation circuits and stated that the path of stabilization-refinement-optimization would more likely lead to successful flotation circuit process control. Best practice on column process control was discussed by Bouchard, etc. where a multi-layered approach was proposed, provided that the measurement of column process variables ( i.e. bias, froth depth, hold-up, etc. ) are measured reliably (Bouchard & Thwaites, 2008). Wills (2006) stated that the best practice for flotation automatic control starts with fulfilling basic control objectives, such as stabilized flotation cell level, air flow, pH, reagent flow etc., before considering more advanced, or even optimal, control of metallurgical targets, which are more closely linked to economic performance."

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Moctezuma Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Nacozari concentrator of the Moctezuma Copper Co. (the Mexican subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation) is located about 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz., in the Moctezuma District of the State of Sonora. Nacozari is the southern terminus of the Nacozari Railroad, ever which all concentrate is transported to Douglas for smelting.

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

MARKETWISE the year 1935 was rather a good one for most of the rare and minor metals; as a class they climbed out of the depression much faster than the common metals. The diamond market, too, was better than it had been for years, attributable only in part to investment buying, as there was a genuine pick-up in consumer demand. Wars and rumors of war tended to speed up purchases of certain metals, but consumption for peaceful purposes was the principal factor. Significant was the important role played by new industrial uses. New discoveries during the year were disappointingly few, considering the broad extent of this research frontier. Scientific developments were far from being at a stand-still, of course, but the dominant note was the cashing in on research consummated in former years. With even a moderate upturn in general business a surprising number of laboratory ideas donned overalls and found jobs in industry.

Coal mining legislation makes frequent reference to æSafety Management SystemsÆ but there is a chronic shortage of useful guidance material as to how these might be applied to hazardous exposures. Several studies have indicated that for each death that is reported as a result of an industrial æaccidentÆ, there are five deaths that caused by occupational exposures. Because the deaths from occupational exposures do not occur on site and often well after employment has ceased, they are generally unreported. Improved access to mortality data from coroners, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and superannuation service providers (early claims from death and total permanent disability), has given rise to some analysis of death and disability data that provides evidence that there are emerging opportunities to develop and improve safety management systems for hazardous occupational exposures. Issues explored include how safety management systems might be developed in relation to dusts and chemicals and other hazardous exposures to ensure the risk of disorders with long latency periods are reliably assessed and the exposures effectively managed. The current standards and guidelines which refer to safety management systems in general or to management of exposure related hazards are examined. Many standards are based on dose-response studies that provide for an acceptable percentage of workers to suffer adverse health outcomes. An alternative management system might be to apply dose-response relations to health surveillance to identify æat riskÆ individuals and effectively manage health and related safety risk at an early stage.
