The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. "A computer-based approach to online supervisory control and operations management of bulk materials handling terminals". This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. A discussion of the resulting benefits are presented: - throughput efficiency - long-term planning and scheduling, using simulation - operations monitoring and protection - demurrage/despatch optimization - preventative maintenance - operational productivity

This paper describes the application of the SBRE framework to model the Olympic Dam deposit, one of the largest copper and uranium deposits in the world. Geostatistical simulations are the best practice for quantifying uncertainty in the mineral value chain and estimating resources. However, these simulations are currently undertaken on an ad hoc basis in the mining industry due to the high requirements in computing resources and capabilities in advanced geostatistics. The SBRE project provides a standard framework to test, build, and run conditional simulation workflows, which has been applied to the Olympic Dam deposit. Conventional geostatistical methods face challenges when modelling the Olympic Dam deposit, such as non-stationarity, non-linear correlations, and a large number of grid blocks to simulate. To address these challenges, a combination of methods was used, including projection pursuit multivariate transform, trend-residual decorrelation, pluri-Gaussian simulations, and turning-bands simulations. Various tools and applications were used to build the model, including in-house developed applications, Autovariogram software (Varify), and the RMSP python library. All computations were accomplished on the AWS cloud using the EC2-Batch service. The final set of simulations was validated using various methods, such as grade-tonnage curves, histograms, swath plots, and variogram reproductions, as well as validation using historical samples back-testing. The study highlights the importance of an automated, modular, and scalable framework in the development of conditional simulation workflows and describes the learning gained from trials of different combinations of methods and software

In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.

"IntroductionDevelopments in the preparation, hydraulic transportation and placement of classified mill tailing as an effective backfill and support for mining excavations, have made feasible several advancements in mining methods that are safer and more economical. Hydraulic backfill systems have played an integral part in the development of more efficient cut-and-fill and blasthole stoping.The hydraulic transportation of tailing fill has made possible the elimination of expensive and laborious transportation, placement and spreading of gravel type fills. Also, in cut-andfill stopes, the use of hydraulically placed consolidated fill has largely eliminated the need to use extensive timbering for floors and supports, previously necessary when only gravel type, waste rock or unconsolidated tailing fill was used .Another important advantage of using mill tailing as backfill is that it decreases the need to contain a large portion of the mill solids waste in a surface disposal area and thus reduces environmental and ecological problems.Tailing Fill PropertiesConsolidated tailing fill consists of deslimed mill tailing and Portland cement. These two materials are mixed together in various proportions to form a high density slurry which is transferred underground by gravity through boreholes and pipelines. After placement underground, the water is drained off and the mixture is allowed to set. The strength of the consolidated fill is dependent on the cement content, particle size distribution and curing time. A typical tailing/ cement ratio used for bulk filling in stopes requiring vertical wall support is 30:1. Ratios ranging from 8:1 to 5: 1 are used for stope floors. High pulp densities minimize segregation and loss of cement during placement as well as reduce the amount of drainage water to be handled."

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Hayden concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is the first of a Series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Hayden concentrator is located at Hayden, Gila County, Ariz., 20 miles from the mine at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz., and approximately 1-1/2 miles north of the junction of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers. During the fourth quarter of 1928 the concentrator treated daily by flotation an average of 10,336 tons of ore containing 1.25 per cent of copper. The average recovery during this period amounted to 87.84 per cent of the total copper. The concentrates contained 19.88 per cent of copper.

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a federal Crown corporation which operates two coal mines (Phalen and Prince Collieries), a coal preparation plant, a railway, a central workshop and a deep water shipping facility.The Sydney coal field consists of 11 major seams, which range from 0.8 m to over 3.7 m in thickness. Of the 2.4 billion tonnes of known coal resources in the field, approximately 550 million tonnes can be mined with present mining technology. These parameters define reserves which extend more than 8 km beneath the ocean to a depth of 1200 m. With today’s design and present high production faces, the colliery life is projected at approximately 20 years."

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. With increasing interest in the physical cleaning of fine coal, there is a need for extension of the sink-float analysis procedure to finer sizes. Problems arise, however, in ensuring complete dispersion of the particles in the heavy liquids. A procedure has been developed in which surfactants are used as dispersing agents and solids concentration is minimized (using a simple formula to estimate the minimum weight needed for statistical reliability). Using centrifuges to increase separation rates and sub-sieve particle size analysis of the specific gravity fractions, a complete size-specific gravity distribution can be obtained. Analyses have been performed on coal samples as fine as -10 µm.

Uranium in situ leach mining has recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional miring techniques. The cost implications of in situ mining are therefore of increasing interest to mining paracticioners as well as public officials. This report presents the results of an assessment of uranium in situ leach mining costs through the application of process engineering and discounted cash flow analysis procedures. A computerized wasting technique, termed a cost model, was developed through this effort to facilitate rapid cost analyses. Application of this cost model will generate mine life capital and operating costs as well as solve for economic production cost/lb. U308. Conversely rate of return may be determined subject to a known selling price. The data bases of the cost made! have been designed to reflect variations in Texas vs. Wyoming site applications. The results If applying the model under numerous ore deposit, operating, wellfield and extraction plant conditions for Texas and Wyoming are summarized in the report. Sensitivity analysis of changes in key project parameters have also been tested and reported.

Based on the weld pool length and width calculations due to an empirical model (1) for submerged arc weld metal, an elegant quantitative definition of tandem submerged arc welding is established. On the basis of this theoretical consideration optimum welding parameters for joining 25 mm thick low carbon steel plate in two passes by tandem wire submerged arc welding have been experimentally found out. An assessment of the metallurgical quality of weld metal and the dependence of mechanical propenies on pool overlap has been made. Also the solution of Rosenthal (2) etc. for a moving point source of welding, which was used as a guide line in formulating the empirical model for the calculations of weld pool dimensions, is compared with the solution of empirical model for submerged arc weld pool dimensions.

Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

THOUGH the Annual Meeting of the Institute-officially numbered 158 on the records was delayed a bit at the start by low steam pressure on the locomotives bringing members to New York, the crowd that finally arrived more than lived up to expectations, and the technical program had few difficulties because of absent authors or lack of competent discussers. The transportation difficulties were occasioned by the fact that Monday, Feb. 15, was the third coldest day in the 72 year history of the New York Weather Bureau, the official temperature being 8 below zero. The New York Central's premier train, the 20th Century, due at 9:30 a.m., arrived about 6:30 p.m., and the Commodore, another crack train from Chicago, was about equally late.

The mining industry has always operated under intense public scrutiny. Community expectations, investor pressures, regulatory obligations, and environmental oversight create a uniquely complex communications environment. In recent years, technological change, climate urgency, and geopolitics have reshaped how the industry communicates its role and value. The rise of artificial intelligence in the information ecosystem represents yet another fundamental shift. As AI evolves, an organization’s reputation will no longer be shaped solely through human interactions, media coverage, social activity, or corporate disclosure. Increasingly, public understanding depends on how AI systems interpret and represent company information. These systems influence search results, conversational tools, news aggregation, social discourse, and even investor intelligence platforms. As AI-generated summaries, answers, and narratives become the default interface for stakeholders, they also become authoritative in shaping trust. For mining companies, this creates both risk and opportunity. The organizations that recognize how AI reads, prioritizes, and amplifies information will be better positioned to build trust. Those that remain silent or rely on traditional communication methods may find their reputations being algorithmically defined without their participation. This paper explores how mining companies can proactively engineer their reputations in the age of AI.

This circular presents part I of a review of the literature on effects of breathing dusts, with special reference to silicosis, largely in the minim; and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject. Parts II and III will deal with prevention and treatment of dust diseases and some of the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry, with special reference to mining. Dust diseases arc much before the public at present, and there is good reason to believe that the information on the subject available to the layman is extremely meager; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of the diseases, their causation, remedies, and prevention, rather than actual experience with them. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable, and in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to bring the subject before the public with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive.

TRIPOLI is a rather unusual form of silica, which thus far has been found in commercially valuable quantities only in the neighborhood of Seneca, Mo., although there are numerous deposits of somewhat similar materials in several southern states. The latter have not, however, attained any position of real importance, due undoubtedly to definite structural limitations which have rendered them less suitable for the particular uses that have given tripoli its principal outlets. Raymond B. Ladoo, mineral technologist, says': "Since that time (1880-90) the term tripoli has with increasing definiteness been reserved for the Seneca material, and other siliceous materials of similar origin and physical properties."

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. While there is no immediate worldwide shortage of hard minerals, the consumption of natural resources is constantly increasing, and there are ominous predictions of shortages to come. Means of meeting rapidly increasing demands are being implemented. These include such methods as exploration and discovery of new ore bodies, development of new mines, increasing production at existing mines, working or reopening known deposits of lower grade ore and tailings, recycling old materials, and developing more efficient and less wasteful processes to convert ores and metals into useful products. The United States, although itself mineral-rich, depends in large measure on imports for many key minerals and basic materials derived therefrom. According to the Department of the Interior, the U. S. depends upon imports for more than half of its supply of six of the basic thirteen raw materials required by any industrialized society - aluminum, chromium, manganese, nickel, tin, and zinc. By 1985 the country will also depend upon imports for more than half of its iron and tungsten, and by the year 2000 imports will have to supply more than half of the copper, potassium, and sulfur that it requires.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.
