Much of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Host producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectfully. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept Iles, Quebec.

Mine and tunnel contractors face a complex environment-one in which economic risks are high, operating costs grow ever higher, ore grades are lower or recovery more difficult, and civil construction projects are intensely competitive on a world-wide scale. Within the context of this environment, the risks and rewards of proper machine selection for rock excavation have become proportionately large. Speed, depth and scope of analysis, and extensive supporting information are indispensable in the selection process. Equipment designs and their applications are also myriad and diverse. Several equipment alternatives and excavation techniques may have to be evaluated at once to choose the most cost-efficient approach. The following examples are typical of the current demand for more detailed equipment analysis: • An aggregate supplier starts a new quarry. He knows his targeted tonnage, blasting restrictions, and previous operating costs from other quarries. But he must improve on his old costs. What drill pattern, hole size, and bench height will give lowest cost per ton? How many crawler drills and what type will produce this tonnage most efficiently? • A mine is using a fleet of twin pneumatic ring drills for long hole drilling to initiate their cave. The mine is facing both air shortages and increasing operating costs with decreased efficiency in the ring drill fleet. If they invest in new hydraulic long hole drills, what impact will each drill unit have on production? Each twin drill unit? What configuration gives best operator efficiency and subsequent reduction in manpower? Which configuration gives the best return on investment? • A tunnel contractor is bidding a long straight water tunnel by conventional drill and blast methods. What is the optimum number of drill booms for the tunnel cross section and excavation schedule? How many rounds per day can he achieve? What are his total project drill, blast, and muck costs? In the past, such questions could be answered, but only approximately at best. One good prediction could involve many hours of laborious calculations that had to be repeated each time a new parameter was introduced or an existing parameter changed. In 1980, increasingly complex analysis, coupled with increasing need and quick response times demanded by industry, led Atlas Copco's project department to turn to the computer. New computer programs based on theoretical considerations and three decades of worksite performance data were developed for evaluating mine and tunnel contractors' equipment needs, productivity, and partial or total operating cost calculations for most conventional drill and blast excavation techniques-including shot rock loading and transportation. This Computerized Analysis of Rock Excavation-or CARE-program has since been available to the mining and construction industry. From each program specific results can be pre- dicted, including: • Productivity Calculations-Rock drill penetration rate for a given drill, hole size, and rock type, optimized for the best drill steel life; net machine productivity (drill-out time or drill meters-footage-per shift); total drill round time, including charging, blasting, loading, and haulage; suggested drill pattern, computer printed, including hole size for a given rock drill, rock type, and associated blasting restrictions for either drift rounds or benching applications; long-hole drill meters (ft) per drill shift; breasting down (upper drilling) drill meters (ft) per drill shift; and comparison between continuous loading machine capacity and LHD capacity. • Operating Cost Calculations-Operating costs expressed as cost per drill meter (ft), cost per cubic meter (cubic yard) of excavated rock, and cost per meter (ft) of tunnel advance. These costs may be calculated using as many cost centers as the mine, quarry, or tunneling contractor wishes. Specific operating costs may cover drill rig operating costs only, less capitalization; drill rig operating costs, including amortized equipment investment; drilling and blasting costs; drill, blast, load, and haulage operating costs; long-hole drilling operating costs per drill meter (ft) or per blasted cubic meter (cubic yard) of rock; and loading and transport operating costs. In all the above cases, any number of cost and capacity calculations may be run by simply changing important cost center variables to judge their net effect. Accuracy as a Function of Input Data and the Statistical Data Base Accuracy of a projection clearly depends heavily on the data base from which the projection is drawn.

Xtaltite is the trade name for a generic technology which exploits the well known insolubility of some minerals, which naturally incorporate toxic waste elements, to consolidate and immobilise a range of inorganic waste products. It is a specific case of synthetic mineral immobilisation technology (SMITE) which is already used to immobilise high level nuclear wastes (HLW. Although HLW is highly toxic, it exists in relatively small volumes, occurs in central facilities and may be stabilised at low waste loading (< 10 wt%). In contrast, heavy metal wastes are of considerable volume, therefore Xtalitite waste forms must routinely accommodate high waste loadings (usually in excess of 30 wt% for a particular toxic oxide or combination of oxides) and be suitable for fabrication in remote locations using relatively simple technology. This paper details the methodology underlying Xtaltite, with particular emphasis given to the interplay between solid state chemistry, durability and economic considerations. Specific reference is made to the treatment of arsenious and mercurial wastes.

Many disputes related to environmental issues in mining are resolved through often-antagonistic negotiations in a regulatory context or through litigation. These approaches are certainly the best choices for resolving certain disputes. However, just as no single remediation technology is the right fit for every site, so no single dispute resolution process is the best choice for every situation. This paper introduces a range of dispute resolution alternatives (from collaborative decision making through mediation, arbitration, and litigation). Especially when money is tightest, cost-effective dispute resolution(and the outcomes that can accompany it) can have an impact on the bottom line.

"In the Phosporia formation of SE Idaho, ore quality varies by depth, seam and distance along strike; phosphorus recovery is sensitive to these variations. Plant ore feed can be blended over time to minimize this fluctuation by using a combination of mine production and inventory stockpile scheduling. Mixed-integer and goal programming has been used to optimize short-term mine production, but the seasonal nature of mine haulage requires the use of stockpiles both at the mill and the mine. The contents of the stockpiles can also be optimized as part of the production scheduling problem, but introducing inventory control introduces a nonlinear term into the formulation. A solution using a piecewise linear formulation is modelled and solved using AMPL/Cplex, and solution strategies are discussed for similar large-scale problems. IntroductionIdaho’s minable deposits of phosphate rock are found in the Meade Peak member of the Phosphoria Formation; two separate zones of this formation are mined with a combined thickness of 30 ft to 60 ft. A generalized stratigraphic section of the Phosphoria section is shown in Figure 1, illustrating the degree of complexity encountered when scheduling mine production. Alteration of the formation results in higher grade ore zones near the surface and variable in P2O5 levels between seams and along strike. This variability is seen as well in other quality characteristics critical to the production of acid and elemental phosphorus. Further, plant recovery and nodule quality are sensitive to variations in ore feed; variability in SiO2, carbonates, moisture, organics (carbon), P2O5 and other constituents of the ore can strongly affect plant recovery. Because ore quality characteristics can vary as a function of the alteration zone (or seam) being mined as well as the depth and distance along the strike of the formation, scheduling of mine production can have a highly significant effect on recovery in the plant. As illustrated in Figure 1, there are nine seams containing 20% to 35% P2O5. Phosphoric acid and elemental phosphorus production requires an ore content of 30% and 25% P2O5, respectively. Variability between numerous beds that are mined and quality variation within a seam due to alteration greatly complicates production scheduling with the result that erratic mill feed characteristics greatly decrease recovery."

Iron ore sinter accounts for a large proportion of blast furnace ferrous burden in Chinese steel mills. Depleting high-grade iron ore resources and spreading complexity of iron ores in mineralogy and morphology have made it more difficult to utilise iron ores efficiently and economically. In this paper, the physical properties of iron ore particles were characterised using mechanical sieving, laser sizing and gas adsorption. From those measurements, two physical indices (fractal dimension of the particle size distribution and surface morphological factor) are defined as important variables for optimising the granulation performance of iron ores. The moisture capacity and the contact angle of iron ore particles with water were also measured to determine the strategy of water-feed in the granulation process. It can be concluded from the experimental results that an increase in the fractal dimension of the iron ore particles will lead to a better granulation performance, while an increase in moisture capacity with a range of 12.8 ~ 14.8 per cent would increase the optimum water content where the granule packed bed achieves its best permeability. "INTRODUCTION Abnormal material requirements of the nation at war impose an intensive demand upon many irreplaceable natural resources. Natural-3as reserves) for example, are being subjected at the present time to extensive depletion by large-scale withdrawals of gas to supply unprecedented demands for fuel and raw materials for the synthesis of strategic products. Fluids produced from many so-called gas-condensate type reservoirs have become an important source of hydrocarbons vital to the war effort.Development of gas-condensate type reservoirs in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas in recent years created many problems not common to ordinary gas-producing operations. Early in the development of condensate-type gas fields, general practices were evolved and applied to insure efficient re¬covery of the hydrocarbons existing in the gas phase under initial reservoir pressures and temperatures, put often the practices were predicted mainlyregardingupon generalized theory regarding the behavior of the fluids and were not always the most efficient, because field and laboratory procedure for testing these hydrocarbons had not progressed as rapidly or as far as field development. Specific information regarding the composition and properties of fluids ultimately recoverable from many gas-condensate reservoirs, especially, is lacking."

Building Information Modeling is a prevailing methodology in the building industry and half (by length) of the world&apos;s shield tunnels are in Japan. Accordingly, for shield tunnels from 2005 to 2007, we developed a product model called IFC-ShieldTunnel, which is based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), in order to meet the future demand for such a product model. IFC-ShieldTunnel was developed by adding new elements that are specific to shield tunnels and that are not included in the original IFC. The added elements include shafts, segments (A, B, and K types), waterproofing elements, segment joint elements, and ring joint elements. Furthermore, soil layers and void elements were created. Recently, we updated the product model by re-organizing the entities and correcting errors. We deployed the updated IFCShieldTunnel model in the construction of an actual shield tunnel in Tokyo for about a year from August 2010 in order to check its feasibility. In the verification process, first, segments were modeled using Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 and property data were assigned to each segment element. Next, a mapping between the original attributes of the entities of IFC and properties of IFC-ShieldTunnel segments was developed. Using this mapping and IFC?s IfcBuildingElementProxy function, we were able to convert the IFC data from Revit Structure 2011 to IFC-ShieldTunnel automatically. Segment data were also converted from Revit Structure to Google SketchUp by IFC-ShieldTunnel. Furthermore, the construction scheduling and cost data were converted from Revit Structure to EXCEL for 4D and 5D analyses of construction. We interviewed engineers who used IFC-ShieldTunnel and received positive comments about the utilization of the product model. Overall, our test demonstrated the feasibility of IFC-ShieldTunnel. In future work, we plan to apply IFC-ShieldTunnel to more projects and test its practicality.

THE occurrence of such a large amount of gold in the Hartsel granite, even though the surmised existence of similar areas is not new, brings freshly to mind the pegmatite type of magmatic differentiation lately brought again to attention by occurrences at Silver Peak, Nev., described by Spurr; and in Alaska, described by both Spurr and Brooks. In both localities graunitic rocks or dikes are thought to pass into metalliferous quartz-veins. An interesting association in this connection is the occurrence of diamonds in residual pegmatitic clay of San Juao de Chapado, Brazil, described by Derby :1 (P. 142) "Bodies of pegmatite are quite common in the older rocks of Brazil, both in the. diamond regions and elsewhere, occurring not only in the gneiss and granite, but in the schistose series as well. Those that have been examined are dike-like in their mode of occurrence and granitic in composition." (P. 143) "The question of the eruptive or secretionary origin of pegmatites has long been a subject of discussion among geologists. . . . The recent studies . . . seem to have clearly established that most if not all of them are essentially eruptive masses, though possibly modified in some way by aqueous agencies. Even before becoming acquainted with the literature of the subject this view had seemed to me to be the only acceptable one as regards the typical pegmatites of Brazil." What is pegmatite ? J. F. Kemp says ". . . veins or dikes-it is an open question which is the more correct term-are met formed of very coarsely crystalline aggregates of the same minerals that constitute granite. These are called pegmatite and in them is the home of graphic granite, the curious intergrowth of quartz and feldspar, such that a cross fracture of the blades of quartz suggests cuneiform characters. . . . In regard to the larger veins or dikes it seems improbable that true igneous fusion could have afforded such coarsely crystalline aggregates, and so we are forced to assume such abundance of steam and other vapors, i.e, mineralizers, as to almost, if not quite, imply solution."

"Can we use data to make communication effective? How does one successfully tackle the challenge of solving cultural differences and harmonizing the needs of diverse stakeholders while developing and maintaining a strong and reliable corporate image? Is it possible to achieve better engagement and minimizing risks with data? This paper aims to explore human rights and business procedures, the promotion of shared prosperity in a sustainable manner and the use of metrics to guide decision-making process. Among the topics examined are: • the significance of stakeholder engagement in community development projects; • the use of grievance mechanisms to give a voice to First Nations and communities / populations in vulnerable positions (including children and elders); • the benefits of configuring and implementing a feedback system in partnership with the communities. This research is a preliminary initiative and has limitations on the extent of the material used. The author acknowledges there is a vast amount of work and publications available on this subject, as well, as a variety of examples that have not been included. The intention is to keep developing this research to assess and expand how data can be used to minimize risks and improve engagement, in addition to inspire others to continue advancing this topic. Natural resources consumption is a reality that will not disappear in a foreseeable future. Several developments and operations are located in remote areas where communities in vulnerable situation and Indigenous Peoples live. Feedback systems are being ratified as a tool to help tackling the challenges of harmonizing cultural differences and fulfilling the needs of diverse stakeholders. Integrating social, environmental, and economic values plays an imperative purpose in preserving a productive and trustworthy relationship with stakeholders. Positioning social standards next to environmental and economic principles shows inclusiveness and firm intention of integration. We add value to a positive image of our industry by embracing responsibility for corporate actions and promoting their beneficial impact on the environment. The social context within communities, groups and organizations is dynamic and presents new challenges as connections evolve. There are wildly diverse expectations which one may need to address during exploration, construction and operating phases. Disagreements are an inevitable consequence of interactions due to the different needs and requirements of the parts involved. Nevertheless, balancing differences and solving conflicts can offer remarkable opportunities for improvement."

Mine soils are often organic matter and carbon poor due to disturbance, topsoil stockpiling and mixing with spoil. They present an opportunity to observe the accumulation of soil carbon arising from rehabilitation or ‘green carbon’ through organic matter inputs and may be considered for carbon credits. Soil carbon is known to improve multiple soil characteristics and is viewed as an indicator of soil health.When attempting to estimate soil carbon levels in the Australian coal mining regions, both coal and black carbon (BC) need to be quantified. Coalmine soils contain coal particles that are difficult to distinguish from organic matter using standard carbon analyses. BC, a material arising from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and fossil fuels, displays some similar characteristics to coal and is ubiquitous in Australian soils due to bushfires. The presence of coal and BC complicate the determination of green carbon levels in mine soils.A method to quantify coal and BC in mine soils from the Bowen Basin using thermal analysis and multivariate curve resolution is presented. By determining BC and coal contributions it is then possible to calculate green carbon levels in rehabilitated mine soils. "Komatsu has been on the cutting edge of autonomous mining for the past 30 years and the company remains at the forefront of the technology that is changing from concept to a full-fledged reality.In 1996, Komatsu America Corp. (KAC) purchased a controlling interest in Modular Mining Systems; a move that enabled both companies to expand their product lines. It was through this effort that Modular helped to deploy the first autonomous haulage system (AHS) — the Komatsu FrontRunner system. In January 2008, the first commercial implementation of the FrontRunner system occurred at Codelco’s copper mine in Chile. Since then, Komatsu has put more than 130 haul trucks into seven sites on three continents to haul copper, iron ore and oil sands and its equipment has moved 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) of material with zero lost time incidents attributed to Komatsu’s autonomous trucks. The 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) is the most of any commercial mining autonomous haulage system and there is more to come. In November, Komatsu announced that an additional 150 autonomous haul trucks will be deployed to the Canadian oil sands over the next seven years.Komatsu has continued to pioneer autonomous haulage development, creating a range of autonomous options that includes semiautonomous and teleremote options all the way up to a haulage vehicle that stole the show at the world’s largest mining equipment trade show.In 2016, Komatsu advanced the concept of driverless haul truck to a new level when it displayed its Innovative Autonomous Haulage Vehicle (IAHV) at MINExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The concept vehicle is the first mega class haul truck designed to be fully autonomous, without an operators’ cab included on the vehicle.Unlike other haul trucks, the vehicle was developed exclusively as an unmanned vehicle designed to maximize the advantages of unmanned operation. Among other advancements, it was designed to distribute equal load to the four wheels, both when the vehicle is loaded and unloaded, and adopt four-wheel drive, retarder and steering. Komatsu said it is aiming for high-performance shuttling of this vehicle in both forward and reverse travel directions, thereby eliminating the need for K-turns at loading and unloading sites."

This paper discusses sustainability considerations in primary copper smelting using selected examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S. primary copper producer. Using the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development, i.e., “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper discusses how copper mining and smelting practices can be made sustainable. The examples used to illustrate sustainability considerations include: (1) adoption of flash smelting; (2) emission reduction and process improvement associated with anode refining of blister copper and the converter retrofit project, and (3) preliminary research findings on alkali treatment of copper smelting slags and copper mine tailings.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada&apos;s eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

IN THE marketing of mineral products, it is always highly desirable for both the producer and the consumer to be able to discuss things in a common language, and this can only be done if there are standard methods for expressing the properties of the raw materials. Having developed such a form of expression, the next step would be the making of specifications, which may serve as a basis for selecting raw materials. Considering the large number of non-metallic minerals that are used, there are not a few for which there are no standard laboratory tests to be used in determining their properties, or even standard specifications on which grades or market price may be based. Indeed in many cases the consumer simply requests the producer to submit samples, and rejects or accepts them without any explanation. Could the producer know in advance just what the consumer needed, time and money might often be saved. It appears to the writer that it is of the highest importance to devise standard laboratory tests wherever possible, as this enables the consumer to state definitely what he needs, and is of great assistance to the producer. It should also work to reduce misunderstandings and disputes. &apos;In the case of sands, we find that they show a wide variation in their character, ranging from those that are so coarse as to be of gravelly nature to those that are so fine that they might be classed as silt; and from very clayey ones to those that are practically free from clay. For this wide range of sands, we have a corresponding variety of uses, which are based mainly on the physical properties of the sand, although these are not always very definitely stated. The chemical composition need rarely be considered, if the sand is of siliceous nature. To determine and express these properties there should be standard tests, which are to be followed in all cases where the material is tested in the laboratory.

Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.

Sperrylite is one of the most abundant platinum minerals globally, valued for its economic importance but also known for its highly refractory nature, making it difficult to process via the conventional route. This study explores the oxidative leaching of sperrylite using a cyanide–ferricyanide system, with a key focus on characterisation of the mineral and surface speciation under varied leaching conditions using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The parameters investigated include the effect of sodium cyanide concentration, the use of potassium ferricyanide as an oxidant, copper sulphate pentahydrate as a catalyst, as well as the effects of temperature and particle size. A limited set of leaching tests was carried out to study the surface chemistry rather than optimising dissolution conditions. This approach identified mineral oxidation states and shifts in binding energies, prior to and post leaching. XPS analysis of sperrylite’s surface chemistry identified key species, comprising the bulk Pt(II)–As (≈73 eV) and As(–I)–Pt (≈41.8 eV) states, together with surface oxidation products Pt(II)–O (≈72 eV), Pt(IV)–O (≈74.5 eV), As(III)–O (≈43 eV) and As(V)–O (44.5 eV). Leaching led to the removal of pre-existing oxides on the ultra-finely ground sample, exposing the underlying bulk species. In contrast, the crystalline sample with an initial low concentration of oxides, generated higher amounts of fully oxidised species after leaching, reflecting greater surface reactivity.

The areas are identified where the techniques of operations research have been applied in the petroleum industry. Particular emphasis is given to the linear program models that have been used for solving management problems. Of the entire gamut of applications for linear programming, attention is focused on the models that represent underground reservoirs. Such models could be used to help schedule drilling rig operations and to schedule oil production. A framework is established for placing the model for underground reservoirs in the proper perspective along with the models which represent other facets of the oil business. One of the remarkable phenomena of this century is the rapid growth in the size and&apos; complexity of human organizations. The mere size of modern business means that administrative decisions can affect vast quantities of capital and large number of people. Mistakes can be tremendously costly, and a single wrong decision can require years for rectification. Moreover, the pace of modern business is such that decisions are required more rapidly than ever before; the mere postponement of action can give a decided advantage to a competitor. It is not surprising that the increase in difficulty of decision making has been followed by efforts to put this activity on a more objective basis. The growing science of operations research, which relies heavily on the methods that have proved so successful in the physical sciences, is one aspect of these efforts.
