Engineers today face a tremendous challenge. Growing population and rising standards of living all over the world are creating unprecedented and accelerating demands on and for all kinds of technology. At the same time, the public is becoming more and more conscious of--and concerned with--the impact of technology on human welfare. The growing controversy over the Supersonic Transport is a case in point, It is clear that the modern engineer must expect to spend a growing share of his time considering this dilemma and evaluating the tools that are available to him, not only with respect to their adequacy for the job at hand but also their capability for meeting the increasingly demanding--and, in many cases, conflicting--requirements of the future. This meeting seems a particularly appropriate place to speculate about the future of mining technology. The summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mining contained in the papers scheduled for the International Conference, together with the recently published Surface Mining volume, constitute not only a major contribution to the technical literature but also form an impressive record of technologic progress. That record, and the advanced technology displayed in the exhibits, and to be discussed in the SME technical sessions demonstrate engineering achievement in which the mining community can justly take pride.

Environmental issues are having a significant impact on how automobiles are designed and ultimately disposed of at the end of their lives. On one hand, increasing concerns about landfill disposal have resulted in greater attention being focused on recycling materials and components from old junk autos. On the other hand, corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirements have led to downsizing, use of coatings, materials substitution and other measures that often make recycling more difficult. Automobile makers have responded to Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards in a variety of ways such as: Downsizing; Designing of more fuel efficient engines; Reducing aerodynamic drag by sleeker body designs; Redesigning by using thinner gauges of coated steels; and Substituting material such as lightweight plastic or aluminum parts for steel. Other driving forces affecting production techniques, choice of materials and recycling issues include the Clean Air Act and its amendments, RCRA. and other environmental legislation. The variety of materials used in automobiles makes the recycling issue extremely complex. Not only does one have different materials used in different automobiles for making similar parts, but changing designs, evolving environmental issues, landfill closures affecting solid waste disposal, and increasing raw material quality standards have created a complex set of dependencies related to materials use and recycling.

Prior to 1975, lead-based paints were commonly used in protecting steel structures. Because of the toxic effects of lead on human health and the environment, their use has been significantly reduced. However, problems with these paints persist when they are removed during normal maintenance by pneumatic blasting with mineral abrasives. Technologies are developed to contain the spent abrasive and paint during blasting operations. This paper reports on A study to identify beneficial reuses for the spent blasting material. Nine samples were gathered from different projects within Pennsylvania. The samples were thoroughly characterized with regard to composition, morphology, and EP and TCLP leach test performance. Potential reuse applications will be reviewed with regard to technical adequacy, economics, and environmental constraints.

The paper describes the replacement of a conventional filtration, clarification and zinc precipitation plant by a carbon in pulp (CIP) electrowinning plant, with the objective of improving the recovery of gold from cyanide leached, acid plant calcines. The discussion covers the early laboratory studies to the design and erection of the full scale plant. Particular emphasis is placed on the problems encountered with commissioning and the strategies which were employed to solve them.

The total pressure oxidation of copper concentrates is a potentially viable option for treating copper concentrates that are either low grade or contain significant impurities. Both concentrate types are heavily penalized in smelter contracts. The total pressure oxidation process involves autoclaving the copper concentrate at temperatures of 200-220 C under oxygen pressure. The autoclave discharge can be separated into a solid (oxidation residue) and a liquid (oxidation solution) product. The oxidation solution can be treated for copper recovery by solvent extraction - electrowinning or by direct electrowinning. The direct electrowinning recovery of copper requires prior removal of selenium and tellurium by cementation on finely divided scrap copper. The oxidation residue is washed thoroughly to remove acid and dissolved copper prior to precious metals recovery by conventional cyanidation in the presence of lime. The results of a benchscale investigation involving a number of copper concentrates are reported. Copper recoveries in autoclave oxidation and gold recoveries by cyanidation of the oxidation residue exceeded 99%. The results of benchscale experiments to demonstrate copper recovery are described. Various flowsheet options are presented.

With the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008, and more precisely from 2009, production routes in iron making as blast furnace, sinter and coke oven, indicated a significant increase in frequency as well as intensity of undesirable incidents. The cost impact of such deteriorations of the production chain cause significant losses ranging up to several hundred million dollars annually. On the other hand, opportunities for processes improvement are contributing to enhance process efficiency and results, and also reduce or even avoid losses from unexpected incidents. The use of specialized services for processes has gained projection along the plants and emerged as an attractive alternative to increase results by increasing the performance and reducing costs and expenses. Process Services are formatted to achieve cooperative and customized solution during planned or urgent interventions, conducting feasibility studies, process improvement, training, among others, providing knowledge, information and crucial actions to preserve and optimize processes and plant facilities.

The Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRA?s) is a tract of approximately 6.5 million acres of federal and non-federal land in the southeast corner of Oregon. This study evaluated the Resource Areas' economically recoverable mineral potential based on geological estimates provided in the USGS report (Smith, 1994). The mineral terranes are believed by geologists to contain undiscovered resources. The geological data is probabilistic; with estimates of the possible number of deposits and their grades and tonnages. Possible future development scenarios range from no development to numerous mines. Based on the analysis performed on these terranes, the most likely (in a statistical sense) future scenario for the resource areas would include the potential for two medium sized, predominately gold, mines. These would supply direct and indirect employment of up to about a thousand workers.

This plant was entirely rebuilt, on thoroughly modern and improved plans, in the spring of 1895, by Frank C. Roberts & Co., of Philadelphia.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., has developed a continuous-recording methanometer utilizing a catalytic combustion detector. The methanometer, which is presently operating at 22 exhaust fans at 14 mines in the Eastern coalfields, is reliable and simple to install, operate, and maintain. The instrument and the details of its installation and calibration are described. Analytical data obtained by infrared spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph are presented to substantiate its re liability.

Laterite projects are found in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. As a result severe meteorological situations accompany such projects, often in regions of high seismic activity and political uncertainty. Frequently, socio-economic development supported by political interest is a major driver for development, while environmental protection imposes numerous stresses on the project. This paper will review and examine the many social, environmental, technical and financial issues that a mining and extraction process is subject to during development. The options that must be evaluated will be discussed in the context of sustainable development. Issues of project standards and cultural impact through to long-term issues such as greenhouse gasses and climate change will be assessed in redirecting project environmental norms. Although a rationale for sustainable project can be developed many long- term uncertainties around issues remain. The McLaughlin Mill started operating in January, 1985. For the first eighteen (18) months start-up, initial operation, and circuit debottlenecking have been done. The mill was designed to recover gold from a refractory ore requiring acid autoclaving pretreatment. This paper discusses the problem associated with bringing this complex hydro-metallurgical plant to consistently achieve design tonnages. Also, briefly described are the mill flowsheet, training program, permitting, and process and project development.

In a recently developed, long-term open pit production planning model, the optimal plan is found by exhaustively searching through nested pits of maximum metal contents. A more efficient, dynamic programming (DP) based search algorithm now replaces the exhaustive search algorithm that requires prohibitively long execution time in real life cases. The logic and formulation of the newly developed search algorithm are illustrated through a small hypothetical case. An actual gold deposit is treated to demonstrate that the algorithm does indeed find the optimal production plan among all possible plans. A comparison, in terms of computational savings between the two algorithms, is also given.

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, one and one-half miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Company operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica, and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Footers Sunbright, Virginia plant and to other customers. Exton, Pennsylvania and New Johnsonville, Tennessee plants produce lithium compounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market, and to the glass industry. Ceramic grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation.

Conditions in the South African market relating to atmospheric emission control has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. Companies have become more responsible, environmentally aware, and have to comply to more stringent environmental limits set by legislation. This paper describes briefly the current best available atmospheric pollution abatement technologies relating to particulates, acid gases, NOx, acid mists, aerosols, mercury, dioxins and furans. Mention is also made as to the best practices for product work-up and waste product disposal.

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains anew method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

Brazil has large reserves of coal (7 billion tons) located predominantly in the south of the country. Despite the relative ease of exploitation, these resources have been underestimated as a source of energy. Currently the country's strategic planning aims to minimize the gap between coal and resources traditionally used in the Brazilian energy matrix. In this scenario, the processing of Brazilian coal in columns flotation appears as a promising alternative, having been successful in mineral systems containing fine particles. This paper aims to study the overall process of column flotation for a specific Brazilian coal. The material used in this study consists of fine coal that is usually discarded as waste and deposited in the tailings dams. The objective is to recover carbonaceous matter and reduce the ash and contaminants grade. The variables analyzed were the influence of size particle, solids concentration in the pulp, the concentration of surfactants and frothers to be used. The first results showed that it is possible, from a feed with around 65% of ashes, to obtain products with approximately 35% ashes with mass recoveries about 40%. Concentrations of frother (pine oil) ranged from 50 g/t to 300 g/t and the collector (diesel oil) of 50 g/t to 200 g/t. Keywords: column flotation, coal, tailings, negative bias

Gold mineralization at Kidston occurs in a semicontinuous zone near the margin of a large, late Palaeozoic breccia pipe. The pipe is ovoid in plan, funnel-shaped in cross section and straddles a contact between Proterozoic metamorphic and granitoid rocks which are intruded by a swarm of late Palaeozoic acid dykes. Rock fragments within the breccia pipe reflect the enclosing country rocks and mix in various proportions to form gradational lithological domains. Most of the gold is free and is located in the breccia matrix and in a set of inwardly dipping sheeted quartz veins which kink around the pipe margin. Sulphide minerals, dominantly pyrite, occur as disseminations in the breccia matrix and as aggregates in the cores of quartz veins. Hydrothermal altLration is pervasive within the breccia and is most intense in areas with the highest percentage of acid dyke fragments. Sericite and carbonate are the main alteration minerals. An empirically developed genetic theory for the formation of the breccia pipe and attendant mineralization involves magmatic and post-magmatic processes associated with the intrusion of a granitoid body to a shallow level in the crust. Economic evaluation of the deposit relied heavily on the results of diamond drilling. Both polygonal and geostatistical reserves were calculated and found to be in close agreement. Geostatistical reserves are considered to more closely reflect the tonnes and grade achievable during mining. The conventional collector for bauxite mineral is oleic acid, which is highly insoluble and must be used in high dosage in bauxite flotation operations, that is the great drawback of oleic acid in use. A series of hydroxamic acid were synthesized, and their collecting ability to certain minerals in bauxite: diaspore, kaolinite were studied. The collecting power of various reagents to diaspore in an incremental sequence were shown as follows: benzyl hydroxamic acid<amylic hydroxamic ac-id<heptylic hydroxamic acid<oleic acid<octylic hydroxamic acid; while the incremental sequence of the collecting power to kaolinite was like this: benzyl hydroxamic acid<amylic hydroxamic ac-id<heptylic hydroxamic acid<octylic hydroxamic acid<oleic acid. It could be seen that octylic hydroxamic acid had the capability of high collectivity and good selectivity, and octylic hydroxamic acid was chosen to use in the following experiments. Reduced zeta potential showed the adsorption of the anionic collector on the mineral. By the adsorptive capability and IR tests, the adsorption of octylic hydroxamic acid on diaspore was determined to be chemical absorption, which was greater than that of oleic acid, as it was physical absorption. Results of floatation experiments on manually mixed minerals indicated that the collectivity and selectivity of octylic hydroxamic acid were better than oleic acid.

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch; Lowell B. Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.
