During more than 100 years continuous mining of the lead-zinc orebody at Broken Hill, an immense amount of geological data has been collected about shear zones related to the orebody. The challenge to current mine geologists is to synthesise and interpret these data sets in a way that is applicable to production demands. Precise knowledge of the locations of major shear zones is important not only for the determination of ground conditions but also to develop an understanding of ore remobilisation along these structures. Traditionally, geological information has been collected from drill core and back and wall mapping underground, and interpreted on sections that are approximately 20 m apart. The recent introduction of MaptekÆs Vulcan software has enabled the shear zones to be modelled in three dimensions. The new three-dimensional shear models have been combined with seismic data from the Southern Cross area. The seismic data is collected from a microseismic monitoring system installed in the Pasminco Southern Operations in August 1996 (Rauert and Tully, 1998). The addition of seismic information to the shear zone models has led to a greater degree of certainty about the shear zone locations and has provided information about shear zones in areas yet to be drilled.

"Since mercury is chemically similar to silver, it tends to dissolve along with the silver and gold during cyanide leaching. Ultimately, mercury is recovered along with the silver as mercury/silver/gold amalgam, which requires retorting to remove the mercury prior to refining the silver and gold. A possible approach to separating mercury from silver and gold in cyanide leach solutions is to take advantage of the replacement reaction between [Hg(CN)4]2- and Ag2S, which results in precipitation of mercury as HgS while dissolving silver as [Ag(CN)2]-. Results are presented demonstrating that mercury can be removed from cyanide solutions with high effectiveness while, at the same time, recovering additional silver in solution. Initial experiments with static flasks in the laboratory showed a high degree of mercury removal could be achieved. Results using actual metallurgical plant products in bottle roll tests indicate the process works on a larger scale, but also results in significant gold losses if the solution being treated has high gold levels, such as carbon stripping pregnant eluent solution. IntroductionThe dissolution of mercury along with precious metals during cyanide leaching is a long-standing problem, which can result in significant mercury toxicity issues (Washburn, 2003). Mercury is first dissolved by the cyanide solution, and then, since it has a great deal of chemical similarity to silver, it follows silver throughout the concentration and recovery processes, ultimately being recovered as a silver/ mercury amalgam when the metal is precipitated by either the Merrill-Crowe process or by electrowinning.While it would be desirable to either prevent mercury dissolution entirely while still allowing silver dissolution, or to selectively capture mercury before the precious-metals recovery step, there is not yet an effective and economically practical approach to doing this (Grosse, 2003; Ravichandran, 2004; Misra, 1998; Pai, 2000). There are a few processes that have been proposed, such as differential adsorption. While activated carbon, as used in the carbon-in-pulp process, is not highly selective between mercury and silver (Washburn, 2003), it may be possible to achieve some separation by selective elution of the carbon to produce high-mercury and low-mercury eluates (Bunney et al., 2010). Certain synthetic resins were shown to be selective for gold but are more expensive than carbon, requiring special equipment, and have not yet been shown to be selective for mercury (Grosse, 2003). There may be potential for differential dissolution approaches, as thiosulfate leaching does not dissolve mercury sulfides as readily as it dissolves gold (Oraby et al., 2010), and it is possible that it may be similarly more selective for dissolving silver relative to mercury. Some work has also been done with selective precipitants, such as sodium polythiocarbonates (Bucknam, 2007), and 1,3-benzenediamidoethanethiol (Matlock, 2002). Common problems with these approaches include introduction of a solid:liquid separation step, reagent costs, the need to measure the mercury concentration for process control for minimizing silver losses, and regulatory requirements to retort otherwise stable mercury concentrates."

"The development of industry and intensive use of natural resources leads to a significant decrease in the share of reserves of rich ores, deposits of which have nearly all been exploited. Large amounts of displaced rock mass are accumulated, significant emissions of gas and dust from mining, dust from dumps and tailing pits, ingress of chemicals and toxic elements in surface and groundwater all can have negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health. Especially dangerous is the impact in Arctic regions with extreme climate conditions. The maintenance of overburden dumps and tailings dams requires significant capital and material costs. In this paper, some mining enterprises of the Murmansk region, in the Russian Federation, consider the environmental problems of the industry and propose some solutions.INTRODUCTIONThe safety of environment during the extraction and processing of minerals is a very acute problem throughout the whole world. The problem acquires a specific character in the Russian Federation. There, rather poor minerals, often existing in unconventional forms and including several mineral components are processed. The Russian mineral base has a specific geographical location; most of the deposits under operation are located in the Subarctic or Arctic regions, as well as in Siberia and in the Far East. Vast amounts of rock waste and tailings pose serious economic and ecological problems in mining regions. The operation of overburden heaps and tailings requires considerable capital and material costs. The dumps withdraw vast lands from potential commercial use. Large amounts of mined rock disturb the existing geological balance; emissions of gas and dust which accompany the mining operations, dusting of waste heaps and tailings, emissions of reagents and heavy metals into natural surface and ground waters all can produce negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health."

FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. Landform evolution models (LEMs) can assess the effectiveness of landform designs applied to a rehabilitated landform by predicting where erosion may occur. Here, we compare erosion predictions produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM with field observations from the rehabilitated Pit 1 landform of the Ranger uranium mine, based in the Northern Territory, Australia (Figure 1). The ability to predict long-term erosion at a catchment scale is important, as the final rehabilitated Ranger landform is required to physically isolate buried tailings material for at least 10 000 years. CAESAR-Lisflood has been extensively tested and calibrated using data collected from erosion plots (0.09 ha) on the Ranger trial landform (TLF) for multiple years (Lowry et al, 2020; Saynor, Lowry and Boyden, 2019). However, until recently, it was impossible to compare model predictions with field observations for areas larger than the TLF erosion plots. We can now compare model predictions of Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 116 gully development with field observations from the newly rehabilitated, 40 ha surface of Pit 1 over two contiguous one-year periods: 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. The aim of this study was to assess whether the CAESAR-Lisflood model can successfully predict gully erosion at a larger spatial scale.

Metal cations have significant effects on the flotation of coal and minerals. In this study, the effects of monovalent cations ( Na+ and K+) on the flotation of low-rank coal (LRC) were investigated using flotation and particle–bubble attachment experiments and through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and molecular dynamics simulations. Oleic acid (OA), methyl linoleate (ML), hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), ricinoleic acid (RA), and kerosene were used as flotation collectors. The flotation experiments revealed that the flotation yields of LRC improved when OA, ML, RA, CTAC, and kerosene were used in pure deionized water. However, flotation was suppressed for these collectors in the presence of K+ and Na+ ions. In contrast, when using CTAC, the flotation yield increased in the presence of these ions. Specifically, the flotation yield increased from 41.24 to 87.03% when 2.0 kg/t CTAC was used in 10 mmol/L NaCl solution. Particle–bubble adhesion experiments and XPS revealed that the hydrophilic groups of CTAC were adsorbed on the LRC surfaces by electrostatic forces, whereas the oxygen-containing functional groups of OA, ML, and RA formed hydrogen bonds with the LRC surface in pure water. Finally, the simulating result revealed that the hydrophobic ends of the OA, ML, and RA collectors hinder the flotation of LRC by adsorbing monovalent cations, whereas the adsorption of monovalent cations on the hydrophobic end of the cationic surfactant (CTAC) promotes flotation via strong electrostatic interactions.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural gas through high-pressure pipe lines. This report deals with that part of the study involving the design off pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. The following Inventory was prepared to provide mineral deposit data to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for use in the Resource Development Navigation Study in Alaska. The inventory was prepared using data contained in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System (MAS) database. The Alaska portion of the database contains Information on over 7,000 mineral locations and deposits throughout the state. When MAS was established In 1975, database entries were originally compiled from literature searches by both Bureau personnel and contractors. Deposit data are obtained/maintained through Information gained from a variety of sources, Including published and unpublished Bureau of Mines reports, records, and files; U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Bulletins, Professional Papers, and other reports; technical and professional Journals; State and other Federal agency publications; data generated during field examinations; and information obtained from knowledgeable individuals. Because of the size of the data base, many of the data have not been significantly modified since initial entry. Each deposit on the MAS data base has a sequence number of the following form:

"Mercury is produced as a byproduct from gold mines and, historically, has been transferred to recyclers and used for various industrial processes and products. However, under the Minamata Convention on Mercury, adopted in 2013,the intentional use of mercury in processes or products will be minimized in the world. Surplus elemental mercury should be treated as a hazardous waste and consequently, should be converted to a more stable chemical form for long-term storage or permanent disposal. A stabilization method has been developed to react mercury and sulfur using a planetary ball mill. The planetary ball mill can produce high-energy conditions and enable samples to react within a short period of time. A series of tests has been conducted to confirm that mercury sulfide can be produced using a bench scale machine with 2400 mL pot. Under a suitable experimental condition with 25 mm ball diameter, 30%of ball filling rate and 1.05 of molar ratio of S/Hg, a powdered mercury sulfide product was successfully obtained in 60 minutes. The leach ability and atmospheric emission from the product was extremely low. This stabilization method would contribute to an environmentally sound mercury management strategy for the gold industry.INTRODUCTIONDue to its unique physical and chemical properties, mercury has numerous applications, including in industry and medicine. However, mercury and its compounds are highly toxic. For example, in Japan, methyl mercury in waste water caused Minamata disease in the 1950s, which affected large numbers of people (Minamata Disease Municipal Museum, 2001). In recent years, environmental pollution caused by emissions and releases of mercury into the atmosphere, waterbody and land by various emission sources such as coal fire plants, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), non-ferrous metal industries, waste incinerations etc. has also become a significant problem. To protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and its compounds, the Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted in 2013(UNEP, 2013)Because ground gold ore typically contains mercury at 0 to 100 ppm, mercury is often produced as a byproduct from gold mines (UNEP, 2016). In gold mining operations, mercury can be released from the ore by roasting or by leaching in cyanide solutions and recovery onto activated carbon. According to Yanget al. (2016), 85.1%of mercury in a concentrate was vaporized during a roasting process. Both processes finally discharge elemental mercury as a byproduct. In the USA, more than 100 ton of mercury was discharged from large-scale and industrial gold mining (Miller, 2004)."

It does not include any legislation passed after 1942 , or any proclamations , regulations , or administrative orders . It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative . If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State , the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature . This summary , however , will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist , and in locating thern quickly, with a minimum of effort . It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject . To make these comparisons easier , the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form . Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts , the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed ,

Almost no work has been published on the strength of pillars in mines exploiting the LG6/LG6A chromitite bands in the Western Bushveld Complex. The strength of these pillars is unknown, and the hard rock industry still uses the Hedley and Grant formula. Numerical modelling, using inelastic constitutive models, may be of some value in estimating the pillar strength, but this approach is difficult and prone to errors as many assumptions are made. This paper explores the alternative approach of the back-analysis of actual LG6/LG6A mining layouts, using displacement discontinuity codes to simulate the average pillar stresses on a mine-wide scale. From this, and underground observations, a ‘minimum’ pillar strength (K-value in the pillar strength formula) can be estimated. The codes TEXAN and Map3D are both used in the paper to simulate the actual pillar shapes and sizes in an LG6/LG6A mine. The results are encouraging as the two codes produced similar APS values for a complex pillar geometry. An estimated K-value of 77 MPa was determined for the LG6/LG6A pillars in this particular area. This is more or less similar to earlier work done for the UG2 chromitite seam, but higher than the K-value of 39 MPa for a linear formula obtained by other workers for LG6/LG6A pillars. Caution should therefore be exercised before using this higher value for all areas. The effect of element sizes and explicitly simulating the effect of the surface for shallow pillars is illustrated in the manuscript using both codes. The need for actual pillar observations and an iterative design process, which cycles between modelling and observations, is also emphasized.

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

Floor failure on the longwall face is a complex problem due to the dynamic interaction between the surrounding strata and powered roof supports involving multiple variables. It can also be highly problematic and costly when not well understood as there are significantly less remedies available post event. This was the early experience at the case study mine where significant lost time was incurred due to unplanned delays in the first two panels. To detect and prevent such occurrences is clearly the best approach, hence a tool to predict both floor failure occurrence and magnitude prior to mining was developed. Several parameters were determined as the key drivers for the failure events that had been experienced at this site. These parameters were, in list of influence from highest to lowest, material strength, retreat rate and the presence of water. The parameters were evaluated using a semi quantitative risk rating system ‘Heave Risk’ and given a weighting per their apparent influence. This ‘expert system’ methodology was selected as the use of risk rating systems in underground coal mining is well established. The heave risk model was first applied to previously mined panels. It accurately identified all areas of known major floor heave, with clearly defined areas of low and high risk apparent. The heave risk model was then used prior to mining and evaluated post mining based on observed conditions. It was found to also be highly accurate for prediction. The variability of each parameter and its influence on the overall risk rating is illustrated and discussed.

The 50,000-ton-per-day Concentrator and Crushing Plant, complete with its related water supply, tailings disposal and concentrate handling systems, was started up in a five-month period, with the entire plant obtaining its design capacity six months after the first mill became operational. Individual mill lines, with their spiral circuits, achieved design capacities within a week after the first treatment of ore through each mill. Construction and start-up proceeded together in many areas of the plant, and considerable organization and cooperation between the Owner, the Engineer and the Contractors permitted a smooth transition from construction to operation. PLANT DESCRIPTION THE Carol Lake Plant of the Iron Ore Company of Canada l1as been well described in various technical magazines. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief outline of the start-up of the con-centration complex. This start-up was accomplished in a period of five months, with the plant producing one million tons of concentrate and achieving its design-rated tonnage less than six months after the first ore was treated.

The Atlanta Plane Train project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport employed the progressive design-build approach. This provided opportunities for collaboration between the design-builder, design engineer, and owner and the implementation of innovative design and construction approaches. The innovations have reduced risks, allowed for adjustments during design to accommodate new challenges, and provided open-book cost and schedule evaluations. The progressive design-build approach has also allowed for pricing of work to occur in phases—capturing the design/construction challenges as the project evolves and when they are more clearly defined. While this has allowed for pricing to be performed with better project understanding and therefore less contingency, the associated time frame for approvals has required careful consideration to avoid impacts to the schedule. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of the progressive design-build approach.

The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined. IN 1943, we found, in the new Mather operation, a very unusual and disappointing condition in the footwall rock where all of our main haulageways were to be located. With the exception of a few hundred feet out of the thousands then planned and since driven, all of the openings require support. In general, the ground is not particularly heavy, at least by our standards, but it must be supported and the back carefully covered. Also, our operations require rather wide plat openings (16 to 18 ft) and rather flat curves at the turn-outs, all of which adds to the problem. When this completely unforeseen condition was discovered, ordinary timbering was the only answer, because of the impossibility of obtaining adequate steel supplies in time due to war shortages. Then by the time steel supplies were obtained and a practice developed, we found ourselves with between four and five miles of main haulage drifts and plat openings of a permanent nature, all of which were supported by hardwood timber, some of which had already rotted to an unsafe degree. To give all of the details of our experiments, studies, and experiences would fill a large book, but we were satisfied that our organization had done an excellent job, starting from scratch. You can appreciate our surprise when we discovered that we had added very little to an existing record. Attention was called to a footnote in a copy of "Carnegie Pocket Companion" year 1923. The note read: "Full information as to uses of H-Beams is given in pamphlet entitled 'Steel Mine Timbers.' " A search of our Engineering Library brought to light a pamphlet printed in 1911 showing extensive use of steel for this purpose. Except for welding in place of riveting, we have added very little to the designs in that book. We have, however, developed an experience which proves, at least to our own satisfaction, that steel mine supports pay off under the proper conditions. We are now convinced, in spite of the relatively high initial cost of materials, that steel sets, because of comparatively low installation cost, are actually cheaper than either treated or untreated wood sets, if they are properly designed and adapted. Several Sections in Use: Convenience guided our first experiments in steel sets, since for a number of years, we had used the 4-in. WF, 10 lb per ft section in 10-ft lengths as safety forepoles along with wood forepoles. This section replaced the 40-lb rail which had formerly been used for the purpose. Having the 4-in. WF sections on hand, it was natural that our first experiments in steel sets involved their use. Later, the rolling of the 10-lb section was discontinued in favor of the much stronger 13-lb section, which is now standard for both legs and caps in areas of no particular weight, but which, none the less, require permanent support. Our experiments involved the use of the 10- and 13-lb sections as legs and 6- and 8-in. I beams, 16 and 23 lb per ft, respectively, as caps. Experience soon indicated that, if the ground were heavy enough, and the opening wide enough to require a cap stronger than 13-lb, the 8-in, 23-lb should be used, eliminating the 6-in. I beam. We now know that the 8-in. WF section of the same weight, which we propose to use in the future, is considerably stronger for the amount of money involved. Comparative Strengths: Tables I to IV giving strengths of several species of timbers as compared with the structural sections that we now use have been prepared in accordance with accepted practice. Experience indicates that failure due to compression perpendicular to the grain of the wood does not destroy the effectiveness of a wood set frequently enough to be a practical factor. Therefore, no table of these values is included.

IN 1943, we found, in the new Mather operation, a very unusual and disappointing condition in the footwall rock where all of our main haulageways were to be located. With the exception of a few hundred feet out of the thousands then planned and since driven, all of the openings require support. In general, the ground is not particularly heavy, at least by our standards, but it must be supported and the back carefully covered. Also, our operations require rather wide plat openings (16 to 18 ft) and rather flat curves at the turn-outs, all of which adds to the problem. When this completely unforeseen condition was discovered, ordinary timbering was the only answer, because of the impossibility of obtaining adequate steel supplies in time due to war shortages. Then by the time steel supplies were obtained and a practice developed, we found ourselves with between four and five miles of main haulage drifts and plat openings of a permanent nature, all of which were supported by hardwood timber, some of which had already rotted to an unsafe degree. To give all of the details of our experiments, studies, and experiences would fill a large book, but we were satisfied that our organization had done an excellent job, starting from scratch. You can appreciate our surprise when we discovered that we had added very little to an existing record. Attention was called to a footnote in a copy of "Carnegie Pocket Companion" year 1923. The note read: "Full information as to uses of H-Beams is given in pamphlet entitled 'Steel Mine Timbers.' " A search of our Engineering Library brought to light a pamphlet printed in 1911 showing extensive use of steel for this purpose. Except for welding in place of riveting, we have added very little to the designs in that book. We have, however, developed an experience which proves, at least to our own satisfaction, that steel mine supports pay off under the proper conditions. We are now convinced, in spite of the relatively high initial cost of materials, that steel sets, because of comparatively low installation cost, are actually cheaper than either treated or untreated wood sets, if they are properly designed and adapted. Several Sections in Use: Convenience guided our first experiments in steel sets, since for a number of years, we had used the 4-in. WF, 10 lb per ft section in 10-ft lengths as safety forepoles along with wood forepoles. This section replaced the 40-lb rail which had formerly been used for the purpose. Having the 4-in. WF sections on hand, it was natural that our first experiments in steel sets involved their use. Later, the rolling of the 10-lb section was discontinued in favor of the much stronger 13-lb section, which is now standard for both legs and caps in areas of no particular weight, but which, none the less, require permanent support. Our experiments involved the use of the 10- and 13-lb sections as legs and 6- and 8-in. I beams, 16 and 23 lb per ft, respectively, as caps. Experience soon indicated that, if the ground were heavy enough, and the opening wide enough to require a cap stronger than 13-lb, the 8-in, 23-lb should be used, eliminating the 6-in. I beam. We now know that the 8-in. WF section of the same weight, which we propose to use in the future, is considerably stronger for the amount of money involved. Comparative Strengths: Tables I to IV giving strengths of several species of timbers as compared with the structural sections that we now use have been prepared in accordance with accepted practice. Experience indicates that failure due to compression perpendicular to the grain of the wood does not destroy the effectiveness of a wood set frequently enough to be a practical factor. Therefore, no table of these values is included.

The Quebec province in Canada is a major producer of aluminium through electrolysis of alumina. The alumina that feeds the electrolysis cells is mainly imported from foreign countries, where it is extracted from bauxite. Other alumina sources, such as clays, have sometimes been considered as potential substitutes for bauxite. There is a large clay deposit in the area of Murdochville in Quebec, with sulfuric acid and electricity available nearby the orebody, as well as sea port facilities leading to the major aluminium plants in Quebec. These are favorable factors to assess the economics of an industrial plant to produce alumina from clays. This paper reviews some of the processes considered for the extraction of alumina from clays and presents results of the initial work carried out on the clay available from Murdochville.
