THE problem of the proper size and capacity of the open-hearth furnace has been a predominant issue ever since its inception some sixty years ago. The original furnaces, built in 1868 at Landore, England, were only to 3 to 4 tons capacity, and from' this there has been a steadily increasing and almost uniform rate of expansion until furnaces producing 300 tons are in successful operation today. At the end of the first half of this 60-year period, or about the year 1900, 50-ton furnaces we're common. Up to this time the problems of expansion had been largely those relating to suficient capital and the engineering development of larger units. But as 75, 100-ton and larger furnaces were proposed apprehension grew and other questions assumed leading consideration.

The detailed researches of a broad circle of problems connected to development of the electric pulse method destruction materials (EPD) of a various nature and area of use are executed. The electrical and power characteristics of process, physical fundamentals of selectivity of a breakdown and destruction are investigated, the device of electric pulse (EP) disaggregation and ?omminution of materials are developed, the technological efficiency of disintegration of industrial minerals estimated. Due to its technological advantages, the EPD could have a great potential in minerals mining and processing technologies. Low specific power and weight-and-size characteristics of EP installations based on the existing out-of-date electric equipment are at present the main reasons hindering the effective application of the method in mining and processing technologies. The main studies carried out in Russia in the field of electro technical equipment development for EP technology are presented. The pulse capacitors service life affects greatly the economic efficiency of the process because the capacitors cost accounts for a considerable, and in some cases, the most part of the operational costs. Determined and analyzed in the study are the ways which could significantly improve the specific characteristics of high voltage pulse generators (VPG), such as to use of high-frequency voltage transformation to develop a charger; to use pulse transformers (PT) with iron magnetic circuits made of materials characterized by high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as to use special ways which could produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for EP devices, and a further strategy of the EP technologies development and application has been suggested on this base. Many publications to date have advocated under- seas mining operations, optimistically overlooking the paucity of information on mineral distribution and the ocean environments in which minerals occur. Such articles (smattered with opinion, as is this article) are herein tempered by my more conservative views on the economics of mining under the seas. For purposes of this paper, underseas mining refers only to the deeper surficial deposits of the continental shelf and the deep sea floor, i.e., the deposits of phosphorite and manganese nodules.

Hydrogen (H2 ) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system. In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, H2 concentrations in the airflow are constant, while in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct of charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to safeguard underground miners.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallisation and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. In an expansion or a new project, a large component of the capital cost can be associated with the pressure leach step and process engineers frequently look for opportunities to mitigate costs. This paper examines a new route for increasing the capacity of an exothermic pressure oxidation leach for sulphide concentrates, sulphide and phosphide mattes and alloys.

"In 2017, Nutrien Allan Potash remediated a portion of the concrete liner in the production shaft. A set of underslung work platforms and collection boxes were used in conjunction with hydraulic splitters, jackleg drills and hand chippers to excavate and remove the broken concrete. New concrete was placed with the original pressure relief design, using a shaft slip form. Shortly after excavating, it was found that the estimated breaking rate and amount of original concrete in-situ was under estimated. Fifteen feet of excavated concrete (2719cu.ft) and ten feet (of replaced concrete was completed on April 28, 2017, and operation of the production shaft was returned to mine operations. During February 2019, Nutrien Allan Potash began remediation of a portion of the concrete liner in the service shaft. The project is different than the 2017 project, as the remediation has occurred during normal running operations and occurred only on night shift. Rather than hydraulic splitters and hand chippers, the new method includes a concrete saw and mechanical excavator from a working platform. The selected method is based on the lessons learned from the 2017 project in the production shaft. The service shaft project was scheduled to be completed in July, 2019. INTRODUCTION Nutrien Allan Potash is located approximated 75 km east of the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. There are currently two shafts at Nutrien Allan Potash: the Production Shaft and the Service Shaft, transporting people and material from surface to a depth of 3,335 ft. The Production Shaft was completed in 1967, with one section of grey cast iron tubbing installed in the Blairmore formation between the 1605 and 2037 ft Levels. A second set of cast iron tubbing was installed in the Duperow formation between 2203 and 2463 ft Levels in 1999. The remainder of the concrete as of todays standards is designed as a pressure relief liner. The Service Shaft was completed in 1968, with one section of grey cast iron tubbing installed in the Blairmore formation between the 1600 and 2048 ft Levels. A second set of cast iron tubbing was installed in 1981, with 169 ft installed through the Duperow formation. The remainder of the concrete as of todays standards is designed as a pressure relief liner. PRODUCTION SHAFT REMEDIATION During the second quarter of 2015, the Mine Engineering team were notified of an area of concern in the production shaft. The shaft specialists of Golder Associates Ltd (Golder, formerly Alan Auld Canada) were contacted to complete an inspection of the production shaft liner with emphasis on the area of concern. Based on the inspection and documentation review, it was determined that the concrete at the 2804 foot elevation had been broken out for some time and was retained with #8 rebar bolts with resin encapsulation. The broken concrete was encroaching on the clearance to the conveyance."

As a means of effecting better control of endpoint temperatirres at the Jones & Laughlin basic oxygen furnace plant, a set of mathematical equations has been developed. The eqlutions are the product of a themlochemical anaysis of the process and aye designed to calculate the required scrap, lime, and hot metal additions in terms of a number of independent variables. Results of test heats have warranted adoption of this technique by the Prodrrction Department. BECAUSE of the autogeneous nature of the basic oxygen steel-making process, bath temperature can be controlled without an external fuel supply by charging the furnace with additions that are thermally balanced. The thermal requirements of the charge materials are such that, during the refining process, they throttle the heat generated by the metallurgical reactions in a manner designed to result in a speci-fied temperature at the completion of the heat. In the past, operating personnel at the basic oxygen furnace plant of Jones & Laughlin's Aliquippa Works relied on their experience and technical knowledge of the process to determine the quantities of charge additions needed to result in a finishing temperature in the range 2880"to 2920" F. (The charge consists primarily of 93 tons of scrap and hot metal plus an amount of lime sufficient to maintain a basicity ratio of 2.8 to 3.2). Estimates of these materials are based on a consideration of the effects on finishing temperature of 1) iron silicon content, having a variation of 0.8 to 1.8 pct; 2) iron temperature, ranging from 2250°to 2600°F; and 3)any excessive cooling of the furnace due to a production delay. The end temperature of the preceding heat also serves as a guide in that, if a heat was within the specified temperature range, the succeeding heat could be charged with materials of nearly the same proportions, provided the hot metal used in each of the two charges was of approximately the same temperature and composition. On the other hand, if a heat was outside the specified tapping range, or if the hot metal used in that heat was of different analysis and temperature from that of the iron to be charged, an adjustment in the proportion of additions is in order for the following heat. Due to the complex thermochemical behavior of the process and to the inexact and subjective nature of the described method of determining charge additions, consistently accurate temperature control was not to be expected. Therefore, those heats out- side the specified tapping range necessitated subsequent adjustments by either reblowing the cold heats for a suitable length of time so as to elevate the bath temperature to the desired level, or cooling hot heats with a proper amount of scrap. Because extra time is required to make these adjustments, production is delayed. In an attempt to devise a method for improving temperature control, an analysis of the thermochemistry of the process was undertaken. This, in turn, led to the development of a set of mathematical equations which enable the calculation of the quantities of scrap, lime, and hot metal needed to result in any specified tapping temperature range. The analysis was not intended to be a repetition of work done by others such as McMulkinl or ~hilbrook.' It was meant to be an extension of their work so that charge additions could be calculated not in terms of silicon alone but, rather, as a function of all independent variables. This paper presents the derivation of these relationships, their effectiveness in controlling bath temperatures, and a method of utilizing them on an operational basis. The Heat Balance—The first step undertaken in the analysis of the problem was the enumeration of the pertinent variables. A list is presented in Table I where it is noticed that these quantities have been separated into the following three categories: important variables, variables considered as constants, and variables to be neglected. The breakdown was an arbitrary one designed to facilitate the analysis; otherwise, the mathematical treatment would have been exceedingly cumbersome and complex. Fortunately, experience has shown that these simplifying assumptions do not seriously impair the accuracy of the calculations. These variables along with the limiting assumptions listed in Table n were then used to write a heat balance of the process by applying the equation of continuity, Rate of Rate of Rate of Increase = Income - Outgo PI ] of Heat of Heat of Heat.

Current methods of inspecting wire rope for broken wires or excessive wear include visual inspection, physical measurements of rope diameter, and electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT). Visual inspection and physical measurement arc the least comprehensive methods. Electromagnetic NDT enables a more thorough assessment of the condition of a wire rope, but the repeatability, accuracy, and objectivity of this method can be improved. One means of achieving this goal is to use a computer to analyze the test data and determine the condition of the wire rope, including the presence of broken wires and corrosion, and the amount of wear. An off-the-shelf data acquisition and analysis system was tested in a U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratory using a continuous loop of wire rope containing fabricated flaws. The test rope was run through a commercially available NDT instrument. The output of the instrument, normally connected to a paper strip chart recorder, was digitized and analyzed with a personal computer. These initial tests were successful in showing that the use of a computer can improve current methods of NDT waveform collection and analysis.

The study of ultrasonic-wave propagation in substances has been remarkably advanced in recent years in most engineering and science fields. The main object in studying the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in solids, is to determine dynamic properties of these materials. The present paper, however, presents some other possible applications of ultrasonic-wave propagation in the study of rock mechanics as follows: Investigation of the mechanism of microseismic activites of geologic materials, (a) at initial or low stress level, (b) at final or fracture stress level, and (c) under fatigue loading condition. Also, correlations among stress level, density, and the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in rocks are discussed in this paper.

A combined solvent extract ion-spectrophotometric method for the determination of as little as 1 ppm of copper in tungsten metal or tungstic oxide has been developed and evaluated. Metallic samples are converted to tungstic oxide by treatment with hydrofluoric and nitric acids. The oxide is then dissolved in sodium hydroxide, and the copper is extracted as the colored neocuproine complex. Total elapsed time for the analysis is approximately 1-1/2 days; however, actual working time for a group of six or eight determinations is less than 4 hours. Precision at the 2-ppm level is better than 0.1 ppm.

The key to realistic casing stress analysis in thermal recovery installations is accurate knowledge of the temperatures involved. Much information leading to prediction of heat losses from tubing string to wellbore has been published. This .same information permits calculation of casing temperature under certain conditions. This paper reviews the basis for most of the published work, the line source solution to the diflusivity equation and examines some of its application criteria in the light of unsteady-state conditions. An alternate finite differences method is presented for correlation, and experimental data pertaining to the heat transfer mechanism in the annulus is reported. In the light of the information presented in the paper, it appears that the assumption of a line source for the tubing-wellbore system is valid even for reasonably short periods of heat flow, .such as "steam soak" operations. The empirically modified equation presented earlier matches computer derived results of the finite differences approach lor periods as short as 50 hours. Previously predicted cas ing temperatures and the associated stress levels are thus verified based on these correlative computations and the reported experimental information. Fall out from the computer output resulting in some studies of the influence of insulating cement properties on casing temperature, and experimentally studied effects of nitrogen placed in the annulus at various pressures., are described. INTRODUCTION Generally speaking, predictions of average casing temperatures have been based on an idealized model involving a centralized tubing string at uniform constant temperature radiating energy towards the casing under steady-state conditions.'. ' Heat is transferred away from the casing to the formation by unsteady-state conduction across thermal barriers consisting of cement and the mud sheath. Heat balances written on the casing permit prediction of instantaneous casing temperatures. During early periods of injection, casing temperature varies appreciably as a function of time; however, for long injection times this variation decays as heat flow from the wellbore to the formation stabilizes, and it becomes virtually negligible as conditions surrounding the wellbore become quasi-steady-state (Fig. 1). "With the plethora of cable bolts on the market, geotechnical engineers can be baffled by the differences in performance claims from the manufacturers but perhaps more importantly they are sometimes at a loss in making an optimal selection matching behaviour with a particular site condition. To this end a new testing methodology has been developed that can cater for the varying types of cable bolt behaviours. The methodology is based on the laboratory short encapsulation pull test (LSEPT) as recommended in the British Standard and overcomes several deficiencies such as cable rotation. Of most significance however, is its inability to measure the post-peak residual performance of high load transfer capacity cables and consequently, there is an inference that these cables may be susceptible to sudden anchorage failure with relatively little yield. This paper details the results of anchorage performance tests of a range of cable bolts and the differences in performance with rock strength and drill hole diameter.INTRODUCTIONA research project was undertaken to develop a new laboratory-scale test apparatus to study the axial performance of fully grouted cable bolts that are used in the Australian underground coal mining industry. Work by Thomas (2012) and others in recent years found there were a number of deficiencies in the testing methodologies making it difficult to determine and compare the performance of the dozen or more different types of cable bolts on the market. This has meant that geotechnical practioners have been hamstrung in optimizing the design of ground support systems in underground environments that are increasingly more arduous.A cable bolt is a flexible tendon consisting of a quantity of wound wires that are grouted in boreholes at defined distances between holes in order to provide ground reinforcement of excavations (Hutchinson & Diederichs, 1996). They were initially introduced into the underground hard rock mining industry in the 1960s (Thorne & Muller, 1964) and since the early 1970s have been brought to coal mining operations."

As an integral part of the investigation of critical and essential minerals in Alaska , the Bureau of Mines examined the lead deposits in the Slana area . Four examinations were made during June , July, and August 1945 in the 200 - square -mile area immediately northwest of Slana . The settlement of Slana lies near the conflux of the small Slana River with the mighty Copper River less than 60 miles southwest of Tek Junction on the Alaska Highway . Travel through the area and the examination of the properties were conducted by a three-man crew consisting of the author , a caterpillar operator , and a laborer . An RD6 caterpillar , equipped with blade and winch , was used in breaking trail and freighting through the country . Supplies and equipment were loaded on a 7- by 14 -foot , double - end , go -devil , which was hauled by the tractor .

This report was prepared for the Bureau of Mines to describe the current methods of design, construction, and development of wells for in situ leaching of uranium. The discussion includes the alternatives for well design drilling equipment and fluids, grout formulation and emplacement, well integrity testing and repair, and well development and stimulation. Current practice in these areas was determined through interviews with eight operators of commercial scale in situ facilities and is also discussed. Based on this information plus the authors' experience, recommendations are made regarding well design, construction, and development tor in situ leaching.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates the number of major pieces of coal- mining equipment that will be required to produce 950 million tons of marketable coal in 1980 and 1.2 billion tons in 1985. The coal tonnages were projected in the intermediate coal supply scenario of Project Independence Blueprint (PIB). The equipment projections were determined by consideration of historical trends and by evaluation of information from equipment manufacturers and mining companies. The ability of the manufacturers to meet the projected equipment demands was also determined. It was concluded that equipment supply offers no presently discernible constraint to mining 1.2 billion tons of coal in 1985. A shortfall in projected production for the intervening years, however, is probable owing to anticipated shortages of draglines.

Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost over $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high cost makes extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. This paper reports operations research techniques used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate over 30% of the total U.S. longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation models of transfers under varying conditions were generated; and, the economics of general transfers and time-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure were investigated.

Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a major occupational health hazard in underground mine environments, even with available abatement technologies. Prior work has demonstrated that micrometer-scale water droplets, or “fog,” may be effective in removing significant number fractions of DPM from a conditioned exhaust stream. Here, a series of laboratory experiments are described which demonstrate that such a treatment can remove significant DPM mass from an unconditioned stream. The removal mechanism involved coagulation of the DPM and drops. The fog treatment removed about 45 percent more DPM mass on average than no treatment. Varying engine load, flow rate and fog droplet number density did not significantly affect the results under the range of conditions tested. IntroductionDiesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy (Heywood, 1988). Recently, however, the adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are an ultrafine mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash (Kittelson, 1997). DPM is generally considered to occur almost entirely in the submicrometer range. It is classified as a carcinogen (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2013), and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustionrelated fine particulates and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases (Pope et al., 2002; McDonald et al., 2011). Many of the risks of diesel exhaust are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components (Heywood, 1988; El-Shobokshy, 1994; Kittelson, 1997). Exposures are generally measured and regulated on the basis of mass concentration. However, DPM number density and particle size are increasingly recognized as critical factors in terms of health outcomes (Bugarski et al., 2012; Kittelson, 1997; Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2013; Pope et al., 2002)."

Fluorite, a kind of critical non-metallic minerals, is the primary source of industrial fluorine. Sodium oleate (SO) is commonly used as the collector of fluorite ores. However, because of its some features (such as the low solubility, high solidifying point, and poor dispersion of SO) at low temperatures, it profoundly inhibits its collecting ability as well as the flotation performance. Herein, we have developed a low-temperature-resistant collector for the efficient flotation separation of fluorite from quartz. The advantages and disadvantages of the SO and sodium petroleum sulfonate (SPS) were analyzed by comparing the performance under different temperature conditions. The results of flotation tests suggest that SPS exhibited much better collecting performance than SO under low temperature. The flotation mechanism of the two collecting agents were further analyzed by contact angle measurements, zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and flotation kinetics. The results indicated that both collectors can selectively undergo electrostatic and chemical adsorption with fluorite, with no adsorption on quartz surface. The sulfonic acid group in SPS is a hydrophilic functional group, which has a relatively higher solubility in water. Therefore, the water solubility of SPS is better at low temperatures.
