A indústria siderúrgica na América do Sul tem sido desafiada desde a crise econômica mundial do final de 2008, como as demais siderúrgicas ao redor do mundo. O cenário de continua degradação das matérias primas, em especial o minério de ferro e a necessidade de reduzir custos, considerando que cerca de 70% do mesmo está relacionado à produção de gusa, atuando em direção oposta, torna este desafio maior ainda. Operar um Alto Forno com elevadas taxas de injeção de carvão (mais que 180 kg/t de gusa) e baixo taxa de combustíveis (menor que 490 kg/t de gusa), considerando a elevação da taxa de geração de escória devido a matéria prima em degradação (~300 kg/t de gusa) torna-se obrigatório ter estabilidade operacional por meio de boas práticas operacionais suportado por adequado sistema de manutenção centrado em confiabilidade (RCM). Este trabalho objetiva mostrar como a ArcelorMittal planta de Tubarão está enfrentando esta situação, visando atingir os objetivos citados anteriormente.

Cerium metal was electrowon in a fluoride bath from cerous oxide and tapped from the cell during prolonged operation . Electrolyte constituents were CeF , BaF₂ , and LiF. Twenty- seven pounds of metal of 99.8 percent purity were produced at a rate of 3 pounds per hour and tapped from the cell . Principal impurities were molybdenum , aluminum , oxygen , and carbon . The operating parameters , such as electrode geometry , bath compositions , and oxide feed rate , were investigated . Anode reactions were found to be important factors in cell operation . Stable cerous oxide reacted more uniformly at the anode surface than ceric oxide . Electrowinning was conducted in crucible hearths consisting of both frozen electrolyte and molybdenum metal . Both materials proved satisfactory and did not react with the molten cerium . Stable cerous oxide was prepared by carbothermic reduction and used as a feed material . Cell design proved to be an important factor in continuous cell operation . Complementary to the investigations of electrowinning of cerium , the metal was purified by electrorefining in a chloride electrolyte .

Iron ore currently mined in Australia generally requires very little beneficiation. However, depleting high-grade resources means that in the future low-grade iron ore deposits will need to be mined to meet the increasing demands of the global steel industry. Along with the increased demand, the industry faces additional pressure to reduce the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing. This has stimulated research beyond incremental improvements to conventional processing into alternative low-impact processes, including biotechnological approaches to mineral processing.Bioflotation and bioflocculation have emerged as relatively recent technologies, in which bacteria and/or their extracellular material may be used as flotation reagents (collectors or modifiers), enabling improved selective separation of minerals. The primary advantage is the production of a selective, environmentally-benign alternative to conventional flotation reagents. A biotechnological approach may also be taken in the beneficiation of high-phosphorous iron ores utilising bacteria capable of iron reduction and phosphorous solubilisation.Samples from three iron ore deposits in Western Australia were examined for bacteria suitable for iron ore benefi ciation. A number of common soil microorganisms including Pseudomonas spp, Limnobacter thiooxidans, Paenibacillus spp, and Ralstonia insidiosa were identified using culture-independent molecular techniques. A number of anaerobic species belonging to the genus Clostridium were also identified in the core samples. Selected aerobic species were enriched and isolated on high nutrient media in the presence of haematite. Several of the isolated strains showed an affinity for iron ore, attaching to haematite in enrichment cultures and further demonstrated through adhesion studies. Other isolated species such as Ralstonia isidiosa and Pseudomonas stutzeri are known to solubilise rock phosphates in soils and have potential for the removal of phosphorous from Australian iron ores.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is studying the effect of supercritical water, at 400' C and 3,500 psi, and subcritical water, at lower temperatures and pressures, on mixtures of minerals and metals to determine the possible applications of water at high temperature and pressure for processing these materials. This research was conducted using a flow-through bench-scale system. Copper-bearing minerals studied were chalcocite, chalcopyrite, covellite, and cuprite. In general, mixtures of copper minerals and pyrite reacted to form bornite. Intermediate phases formed were chalcopyrite and digenite. Similar reactions occurred between pyrite and metallic copper. A mixture of chalcopyrite and pyrite was inert in supercritical water'. The reaction between cuprite and metallic zinc yielded metallic copper. The cuprite was reduced by hydrogen generated by the reaction between metallic zinc and water. None of the reactions occurred exclusively in supercritical water, but also occurred in water at high temperature and pressure below the critical point. 'Experimental results did show that a dual-reaction process, consisting of solid-state diffusion and fluid transport, was occurring.

The work has shown that packed-bed behaviour can be predicted from the results of single-particle experiments, total reaction times being predicted somewhat more accurately than gas and solid temperatures and gas compositions. A small laboratory packed-bed reactor was built and used to study the decomposition of beds of specially prepared CaCO3 spheres, steps being taken to minimise the effects exerted by the walls of the bed on processes occurring within the bed. Gas and solid temperatures and gas compositions were measured at various points in the bed and compared with theoretical predictions based on kinetic data determined in previous single-particle experiments. The measured solid temperatures and total reaction times agreed remarkably well with the values predicted theoretically. Gas and solid temperatures measured after the reaction had finished at any point in the bed did not agree with the theory. This was because solid temperatures in the bed rose very rapidly once the reaction was completed and the walls of the bed could not be heated at a sufficient rate for their temperatures to rise as rapidly; thus some loss of heat from the bed to the walls was inevitable, and this could not be accounted for in the theory. In addition, the theory did not allow for the conduction of heat within the bed, and this resulted in some further slight discrepancy between the measured and predicted values, particularly after the reaction was completed. Gas compositions measured in the bed were rather scattered, but, even so, they agreed moderately well with the predictions of the theory.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever as ações que foram tomadas pela TKCSA com o objetivo de restabelecer a capacidade operacional plena do Gasômetro (BFG), pela sua estabilidade e, por conseguinte a sua continuidade operacional. Desde seu start-up, ambos os Gasômetros apresentaram vários problemas que impediram sua operação em plena capacidade; provocaram várias paradas para realinhamento, rebalanceamento, bem como repopeamento. Estas ocorrências interferiram fortemente na Geração de energia do complexo, devido a instabilidade dos Gasômetros, causada por irregular movimentação do pistão, provocando sua descentralização e desnivelamentos fora das tolerâncias aceitáveis, o que levou a TKCSA a limitar a operação dos Gasômetros e, mesmo assim ; sempre que descentralizava e ou desnivelava, era necessário novos ajustes (repopeamento e rebalanceamento). Tais eventos nestes importantes equipamentos, levaram a CSA a tomar várias ações conforme preconiza o IGEM (Instituition of Gas Engineer) passando por reparos estruturais e culminando com a troca do sistema de selagem dos Gasômetros.

Several new techniques. which may be applied with advantage to the search for uranium are described. Scintillation type gamma spectrometers are now available for airborne', ground and borehole use. These can distinguish in a broad way between anomalies due to uranium, thorium and potassium. Gamma spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors now under development should be capable of much greater resolution. These should also make possible rapid, accurate and cheap radiometric analyses of samples containing uranium and/or thorium, whether in radioactive equilibrium or not. Another valuable prospecting aid, particularly in areas of tropical leaching, is systematic sampling of soil for radon content. Equip- ment for this purpose is currently available and it will be possible to extend the method when development of an alpha probe suitable for use in deeper holes is completed. Variations in the concentration of certain trace elements'in soil (e.g. mercury) also offer promise in the search for mineralized zones which may contain economic eon¦- centrations of uranium.

The low concentration of diamond in workable deposits requires very large samples for grade estimation, and results, even then, may be erratic and difficult to interpret. Although the Poisson probability distribution cannot accurately describe the occurrence of diamond, it is suggested that it gives a better estimate of grade than conventional methods, even from single samples. Examples illustrate the simple calculation required.

In this study, the effect of morphological properties such as shape factors and roughness of the glass beads on their flotation efficiency were determined using image analysis and profilometer methods. There is a considerable correlation between the shape factors, surface roughness and flotation behavior of the glass sample. These results indicate that as the particle shape is away from roundness and smoothness, it acquires more hydrophobicity.

From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. Provide an improved, rugged, reliable, cost-effective automatic fire protection for mine haulage trucks. Approach Systems that automatically sense and extinguish fires on haulage trucks were designed, built, and in-mine tested. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted above the engine of the truck detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. A cab-mounted control panel warns the operator of the fire emergency and then automatically triggers the discharge of 60 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent (from storage tanks through hoses and nozzles) into the engine compartment. If desired, the control panel can be field-adjusted by changing one resistor to delay the discharge for up to 60 seconds to allow time for the operator to stop the truck and shut down the engine. The system can be assembled with either pressurized storage tanks, or a combination of non-pressurized storage tanks plus separate pressure cartridges. This pressure source option is one of the improvements of this system over the earlier systems described in Technology News No. 11. Other improvements are a simplified control circuit and an improved sensor.

The purpose of this study is to develop designs to facilitate and accelerate auger rotation stoppage (and auger rotation start up so as to promote auger disengagement during auger miner repositioning) and to provide a time delay and warning signal prior to auger start up to permit any miner s near the augers to get away from the augers before they start rotating. In the underground coal mines in the U.S., there are four auger miners that are currently in use. They are the Jeffrey 100L (see Figure 1-1) and 100M (see Figure 1-2), and the Wilcox WCM and the MK20A (see Figure 1-3).

Cumberland Resources Ltd. is currently planning to develop the Meadowbank Gold Project located some 70 km north of Baker Lake, Nunavut in the eastern Canadian Arctic region. The Meadowbank Gold Project currently consists of up to 6 main gold bearing deposits within relatively close proximity to one another which are planned to be mined primarily as a truck-and-shovel open pit operation and using conventional gold milling and extraction. The mining plan indicates that approximately 20 million tonnes of ore will be mined over a mine life of 8 to 10 years. The operation will generate approximately 160 million tonnes of mine waste rock and about 20 million tonnes of tailings. The site is located in an area of continuous permafrost with mean annual average air temperature of -11 °C and average annual precipitation in the range of 100 to 200 mm. Lakes cover a large portion of the site, including some of the ore deposits. The location of the site, and the physical environment, pose challenges to development. This paper presents some of the designs considered to effectively manage and utilize the waste products of mining at the project.

Intergrated energy balances and energy flows were constructed and quantified for State, regional, and national levels from four separate supply and demand commodity balances for coal, dry natural gas, petroleum and natural gas liquids, and utility electricity. These commodity balances were integrated by source and sectors through conversion and aggregation of their components to energy equivalents expressed in British thermal units (Btu). A summarization of the total gross energy components of supply and demand for commercial energy derived from direct fuels, hydropower and nuclear power, based on individual States and regions, is tabulated for 1960 and 1965. Pertinent computerization details and more than 500 individual State and regional printout tables, in both original commodity units and Btu's, are shown. Using these data, energy flows between States and regions were calculated to identify surplus and deficit energy areas. Report emphasis is on the conceptual aspects of integrated energy balances, rather than on the development of missing State energy data.

Kidd Creek continuously-cast copper anodes are characterized by high levels of Se, Pb and Ag; the anode slimes constituents and their morphologies are controlled by both the anode composition and the casting process. Hollow Cu2Se spheroids and tube-like structures, enveloping Cu-Pb-As oxide and/or Cu2O, are present in the as-cast copper. During electrolysis, the selenides are liberated from the copper and accumulate in the slimes layer; the Cu2O and Cu-Pb-As oxide react rapidly with the electrolyte to form soluble species and PbSO4. Silver, which is present mostly as a solid solution in the anode copper, is also liberated during electrolysis and reacts with the Cu2Se to form (Cu,Ag)2Se. The ultimate composition of the selenides in the slimes layer depends mostly on the Ag and Se contents, but various other elements, including Au and Te, are also structurally incorporated. Although the selenides are the major Ag carrier, metallic silver also is present. A thin layer of Cu2O crystals sometimes forms at the copper surface, and may affect anode passivation. Copper sulphate is a common constituent and serves to agglomerate the slimes. Copper sulphate is present on both passivated and non-passivated anodes, but that observed on the passivated metal is present as a thick compact layer. Copper powder is associated with CuSO4.5H2O only on passivated surfaces.

The well-established on-line particle size analyzer OPUS manufactured by Sympatec GmbH, has been successfully implemented in several mining and industrial minerals project. OPUS monitors the particle size distribution in 31 fractions as well as the solid concentration in opaque and highly concentrated ore and mineral slurries on-line in real time e.g. behind mills or cyclones applying 31 ultrasonic frequencies for highest resolution. Ultrasonic extinction overcomes all limitations known from optical and mechanical systems like contamination, blockage and wear. OPUS measures slurries in their original state without any dilution, hence no extensive sampling procedure or sample conditioning is required thus no dilution errors occur. Due to the OPUS design and suitable algorithms entrained air bubbles do not affect the quality of analysis at all. The sensor covers particle size distributions from 0,01 to 3.000,00 µm and solid concentrations up to 70 % by volume and can be easily adapted to a number of production lines simultaneously. Jiangxi Copper?s Dexing Mine is one of the biggest copper mines in Asia and among the first users for OPUS on-line particle size and concentration analysis in mining industry. OPUS is connected to 2 process lines. Jiangxi Copper has implemented OPUS for into their central control system for the grinding & classifying circuit of one SAG mill and one ball mill. "Confidence in the design and stability of an undercut cemented rockfill (CRF) span requires a thorough understanding of its emplaced material properties. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cast 6×12-inch QA/QC cylinders is typically used as an index test to track the performance of a backfill plant. However, these strengths need to be adjusted for oversize aggregate removal and sample size effects if used to estimate the emplaced UCS. UCS testing of 6×12, 12×24, and 18×36-inch cast CRF cylinders was used to quantify the relationship between readily available 6×12-inch QA/QC strength data and the emplaced UCS. Test results indicate that the UCS of 18×36-inch cylinders is roughly 40% of the 6×12-inch UCS for similarly compacted samples. Mine QA/QC data indicate that the UCS of CRF is highly dependent on the degree of compaction as measured by bulk density. Based on these results, knowledge of the emplaced CRF density compared to 6×12-inch QA/QC density is also necessary to estimate the emplaced UCS. The scale effect reported in this study is more pronounced, compared to current understanding of backfill properties discussed in the literature, and underscores the need for further site-specific testing. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SRMD), in cooperation with Barrick Gold Corporation, is conducting research with the goal of determining a relationship between 6-inch QA/QC cylinder strengths and the in-place strength of cemented rockfill (CRF). CRF cylinders with dimensions (diameter × length) of 6×12, 12×24, and 18×36 inches were cast onsite at the Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) and Cortez Hills Underground (CHUG) mines using CRF mixed at the mines’ respective batch plants. UCS tests were performed after 28 days of curing to estimate the size correction factor for each mine’s CRF. This paper presents an overview of the mix designs, sample collections, testing methods, test results, and an estimate of the UCS size correction factor for CRF at these mines. BACKGROUND Underhand cut and fill mining methods utilizing cemented backfill are common in underground metal mines in the United States. These methods are advantageous for controlling weak or highly stressed rock mass conditions by creating an engineered material that can be placed in openings, forming a beam that provides a safe, stable back for the next undercut. Increased use of underhand methods in the last 30 years has greatly improved safety in many cut-and-fill mines. However, with the continual push for more efficient and cost effective mining, there is a need to thoroughly understand the geotechnical properties of cemented backfill to assist in designing safe, stable openings while optimizing costs and production schedules."

"The bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements when external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements rationally.Three points bending tests are conducted to investigate the bending tensile properties of cement-treated soils in this study. Cement-treated soils mixed in a laboratory are used in the bending tests. The test specimens are prepared with the several mixing properties to study the relationship between the tensile properties and unconfined compressive strength qu. Bending tensile strength Tfb and fracture energy Gf of the cement-treated soils are evaluated from the load-deflection curves obtained from the bending tests. The experimental results indicate that Tfb and Gf are approximately proportional to qu.INTRODUCTIONThe ground improvement by deep mixing has been widely used for structure foundations, retaining walls and liquefaction mitigations. Recently column and wall shaped ground improvements by deep mixing method have been applied for economical reason. When external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements appropriately.Namikawa et al. (2007) conducted the finite element analysis to investigate the dynamic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, an improved ground consisting of several grids in a line was chosen to study the basic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground. Fig. 1 shows a example of calculated tensile failure zones in the improved soil during the earthquake. Half of one section of the improved soil consisting of two grids in a line for the 8 m × 8 m grid was modeled in the case. In Fig. 1, the failure occurs at the bottom and upper corners of the improved soil grid. The analysis result indicates that the constitutive model which can appropriately evaluate tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils is required to evaluate the performance of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, the elasto-plastic model developed by Namikawa and Mihira (2007) was adopted for the cement-treated soil behavior. The elasto-plastic model can suitably describe the tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils. In the elasto-plastic model, tensile fracture energy is adopted to determine a tensile softening relationship because it is difficult to directly measure the stress-strain relationship after the peak stress state in direct tension tests. However there is little experimental study on the tensile fracture energy of cement-treated soils."

The project involves the research into available cost effective and easy to operate technology. The paper covers the experimental and theoretical work that was conducted. The results were used to determine the best equipment and method for melting and casting brass scrap.

In this ?paper practical solidification of anodes containing nickel, arsenic, antimony and bismuth is compared with the equilibrium? diagrams and kinetic ?factors. In order to clarify the distribution of the impurity elements in the anode the structures were studied after the solidification and also after the electrolysis of anodes. This examination was carried out with optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electrochemical measurements. All the nickel is remaining metallic in the copper matrix during the solidification and therefore nickel is dissolved in the electrolysis at all oxygen contents, when the nickel content is 0.25 wt-% or less in the anode. The practical .solidification mechanism of the anodes, when the nickel content exceeds 0.25 wt-%, proceeds by the crystallization of nickel oxides. In oxygen containing copper anodes nickel oxide is verified to crystallize together with antimony in certain conditions and to form a micaceous compound (3Cu2O?4NiO?Sb2O5), which may build up a very harmful floating slime in the electrolyte. Arsenic is strongly enriched along the phase boundaries in oxygen free copper anodes. An intermetallic compound Cu3As is formed when the amount of arsenic in the anode. exceeds 0.7 wt-%. This compound is more noble than the copper matrix. This means 'that a selective dissolution of copper-arsenic compounds takes place. The copper matrix dissolves more strongly than the grain boundaries. The solidification structures of oxygen free bismuth containing copper anodes show clearly the influence of bismuth. Thin bismuth films which are less .noble than the metallic copper matrix, are formed during the solid1ficatton process. As a result of this the?grain boundaries are dissolved faster than the copper matrix.
