"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). Draglines are dominant machines and the most electricity consumers in surface coal mines. With the growing price of energy, environmental concerns, and the high sensitivity of mine profitability to dragline productivity, any improvement in efficiency of draglines can be beneficial for mines. Research has shown that operator skills have a significant impact on energy efficiency of loading machines. This study suggests a method to identify the key parameters that lead to differences in operator energy efficiency (responsible parameters). First, correlation analysis is used to identify parameters that are correlated to energy efficiency. Second, linear regression of a difference matrix is used to determine responsible parameters. Since this method is based on pair-wise comparison of operators, equal number of cycle is required for pairs of operators. Complete case analysis (CCA) is used to handle missing data problems. The final conclusion is made after removing the effect of random sampling and by considering all pairs of operators. Identifying responsible parameters can improve operator training programs. The suggested method is illustrated with a case study using field data.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. operates an ISASMELTTM furnace for the smelting of copper concentrate at the Miami Smelter in Claypool, Arizona. In May 2017, the furnace was restarted after incorporating newly designed copper cooling elements from just above the tap hole to the underside of the roof. The objective of the improved cooling design was to extend campaign life by eliminating existing failure mechanisms with the wall refractory. In addition to upgraded bathline coolers and complete coverage of the gas offtake transition, or ‘kettle’, with plate coolers, a novel arrangement of coolers was installed in the remaining freeboard area. The shell required significant cutting and re-stiffening, as well as extensive modification of the cooling water piping. Based on performance observed to date, it is expected that smelter throughput will be increased due to extended ISASMELTTM refractory campaign life.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in noncoal mines. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it as permissible for safe use in mines.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a quantitative Analysis for pyrite in coal by X-ray diffraction that can be accomplished in little more than 1 hour. To minimize the sample analysis time, data processing has been completely computerized with pertinent output information displayed on a VR12 cathode-ray tube display. Use of this computerized system is not only advantageous during the experimental stages of the pyrite analysis project but would also be essential if the X-ray diffraction procedure is accepted as a standard method of analysis.

The cloud transform simulation is a technique used to generate realisations of correlated attributes. The principle of this technique is to partition the scatter diagram between the input attributes into several interval classes and derive for each class a cumulative distribution function (CDF) using only the data pairs of the scatter diagram in that class. The simulation then proceeds like a traditional Monte Carlo simulation but using the derived CDF in each class.The cloud transform simulation has the advantage of being a simple and fast technique that is able to reproduce the uncertainty in the relationship between the two input attributes regardless of whether the relationship is linear or not. However, the technique has three major drawbacks. First, the number of classes has an impact on final simulated results and there is not a robust approach to define such number. Second, simulated results exhibit some saw tooth variations that are unrealistic and third the reproduction of the spatial continuity of the simulated attribute is not guaranteed.This paper presents the use of the quantile regression approach in order to overcome the first two disadvantages of the cloud transform simulation. Details of the technique and how it can be coupled with the cloud transform simulation are presented along with a real case study.

One critical factor in open pit mining projects is the estimation of the recoverable reserves. The reason for this is that at the valuation stage there is a lack of information about future metal prices and production costs. Consequently, the estimation of the recoverable reserves needs to be done based on a fixed break-even cut-off grade (BECG), in which fixed expected metal prices and production costs are assumed throughout the operating life of the mine (OLM). In this paper, an alternative technique for estimating the recoverable reserves of an open pit mining project is presented and explained in detail. The main characteristic of this technique is that it estimates the recoverable reserves of the project using mining costs as reference: this is done due to the fact that mining costs are easier to model than metal prices. Another important characteristic of this technique is that it uses the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody, given by simulations of the deposit, to make final strategic decisions, such as the selection of the operating life of the mine and the optimal production rate, which minimise the risk of not achieving future production targets while maximising the upside potential of future rewards. As it will be shown, the final outcome of the proposed technique is the generation of a robust open pit design, that include cutbacks and ultimate pit limits, called the marginal open pit mine design (MOPMD). One characteristic of the MOPMD is that, at each production period, it will be characterised by their respective geological uncertainty, given as probability distributions of ore, waste and metal quantities, and by marginal economical project indicators, such as cut-off grades and metal prices, among others. The Rush & Brown mine has been one of the most consistent small producers of copper ore in the history of Alaskan mining. Approximately 50,000 tons of ore have been shipped to smelters from the property. Production has been made from two distinct and separate ore bodies of dissimilar types. The Shear Vein deposit has been mined to a depth of 500 feet below the surface without a reduction in the size of the ore shoot or the grade of ore. The Magnetite ore body has been partly mined to a depth of 200 feet below the surface. Because of the favorable production record of the Rush & Brown mine, the present need for copper and the fact that the owners were attempting to place the mine in production, it was deemed advisable to investigate this property under the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 as a possible source of copper.

An estimated 49 billion tons or 29 percent, of the coal reserve base to a depth of 1,000 feet in the eastern United States fall in the 28- to 42-inch range. Often left out as a consequence of selective mining, it is a paramarginal source that will become increasingly important. At present, all active thin seam longwalls are located in the Eastern Coal Province, and a number of operations have been suspended due to the erosion of the market for metallurgical coal. Extensive premining studies, appropriate mine planning, reliable equipment that is designed with ergonomics in mind, adequate roof support, intensive training, and strong face discipline are the ingredients that provided a measure of consistency in production for the last 10 to 16 years, particularly in the Pennsylvania bituminous coalfield where single drum shearers dominate. Plows, which were found to be very productive in suitable strata in Europe, are used in the Pocahontas field. Low seam four- and six-legged shields have been introduced recently. The future holds automation at progressive levels. The first step is batch control with the benefits of quickly applied roof support and reduction of workmen exposure to environmental hazards.

La2Zr2O7 is a promising thermal barrier coating material due to its low thermal conductivity and superior high temperature stability. In this work, Bilayer La2Zr2O7 and conventional 8 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) coatings were deposited using plasma spray technique. Both singlelayer La2Zr2O7 and double-layer 8YSZ/La2Zr2O7 coating architectures were designed. Thermal cycling and thermal shock tests were used to evaluate coatings’ thermomechanical properties. All La2Zr2O7 coats were delaminated in the furnace cycle test in less than 20 cycles. This is because residual thermal stresses accumulated during thermal cycling. In the jet engine thermal shock (JETS) tests, the SCL La2Zr2O7 and DCL dense 8YSZ/La2Zr2O7 coatings were fully delaminated. In contrast, the DCL porous 8YSZ/La2Zr2O7 coating sample only partially delaminated on the edge. This is because of the porous 8YSZ layer provides strain compliance. The findings will help to propose efficient thermal barrier coating systems.

UNTIL June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C., the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. In order to increase the production, and to reduce its cost, the Anthracite Fuel Company was compelled to change most of its plant, and to erect more powerful machinery, producing lumps of a larger size, almost twice the size of the lumps made previously by the same company. Washington State has a well developed set of blasting regulations which have been promulgated by the Department of Labor using extensive stakeholder input, not only from citizens but also from manufacturers and representatives of IME, blasters in charge, blasting engineers, blasting companies, local and federal law enforcement agencies, fire officials, and local and state government representatives. WAC 296-52 therefore provides a foundation or platform for developing city ordinances for Washington State cities should a City wish to do so. On the other hand, Oregon’s code is based on OSHA 1926, Subdivision U, Blasting and the Use of Explosives which provides scant direction regarding the modern use of explosives. Reference is also made to ODOT Section 00335 - Blasting Methods and Protection of Excavation Backslopes. This paper examines two separate programs that have been developed by two Cities, one in Washington State and one in Oregon to further regulate blasting inside City limits and discusses why the lack of a regulatory foundation made one approach more difficult than the other. One of the authors was retained by the City of Kennewick, WA to develop their ordinance and has more recently followed and reacted to a pending ordinance for the City of Redmond, Oregon. The paper will compare and contrast the different approaches and comment on the reaction from both Blasters and the public. We also present a case study that involved blasting in an urban area of Oregon to prepare a foundation for a water tank. Controlled Blasting was carried out within 70-ft of residencies and within a community that had expressed reservations regarding blasting even though the work would make a significant contribution to the betterment of the community. Pre-construction surveys of residencies located in a large area surrounding the site were performed and a well-planned blasting program was carried out. Residencies were subject to vibration levels that were monitored using six seismographs that surrounded the site and these units measured vibration levels that were significantly lower than allowed by statute. There were complaints triggered by individuals reactions to blast vibrations which validated commonly held models of human perception but no damage was caused by the Blasting.

The South Deep massive orebody consists of 20 to 30 in of payable conglomerates ranging in dip from 11¦ to 20¦ and at depths of between 2400 in and 34(10 in. The mine design process selected a mining method with a proven record of application that could be adapted to overcome the inherent difficulties associated with the depth, thickness and structural influences of the South Deep orebody. A modified cut and fill mining method provides a concentrated and highly flexible method of extraction. An integrated destressing cut will enable the modification of the stress environment such that it is suitable for massive mining operations. The choice of backfill type and stoping width in the destressing cut ultimately determines the characteristics of the stress modification and, as such, is critical to the success of the cut and fill operation. This paper discusses the decision process undertaken to determine the optimum backfill type and stoping width combination in terms of, conditions in the destressing cut faces and in the massive mining environment. Numerical modelling has been extensively used to analyse arious scenarios to aid in the decision process.

"The emission of hydrocarbon gases from coal beds and contiguous strata causes many accidents in coal—mine workings, the number of fatalities so caused being second only to those due to falls of roof. Gases tend to increase in amount with depth of coal mining, hence the danger of explosion is increased with depth. The pressure of the gas in virgin—coal areas at a distance from mine workings likewise tends to increase with depth from the surface, probably due to corresponding increase in hydraulic head and possibly, when the gas is held in nonporous formations, to greater ground pressure. The rise in gas pressure with depth under usual conditions is shown in wells drilled from the surface and in some coal fields in drill holes into the face of workings; however, under normal conditions of coal formation gas does not issue into workings under high pressure because the coal and adjacent strata have many bedding and joint planes which allow the gas to escape freely at the face of the workings. The rare occurrence of instantaneous outbursts of gas, with violent effects referred to later, constitute the exception.Variations of volume and pressure of fire-damp or methane found in different coal beds by wells at a distance from mine workings, are analogous to variations in volume and pressure of natural gas found in different gas and oil sands, although in general the pressure tends to increase with the depth. Sometimes, however, in tight sands higher in the formation the pressure of gas therein is abnormally high, and on drilling the well deeper gas in the lower strata may be found at lower pressure."

Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.
