"The profitability of an underground mine depends to a great extent on the production cost.Random equipment failures and their consequences have significant influence on the total operating cost of a mining system. Having this in mind, a reliability study has been initiated for loadhaul- dump machines in an underground mine. The main purpose of this study is to identify the critical machine subsystems, determine their failure pattern and help work out an effective maintenance strategy. In the first part of this study, the failure data of diesel powered LHDs, gathered during an I8-month period have been analyzed. For the purpose of the analysis, the machines have been treated as systems comprising seven subsystems connected in series. The most critical subsystems, i.e. electrical and hydraulic, were further investigated, and analyzed by graphical and analytical methods. Different failure distribution models were applied and discussed. Basic Defmitions and ConceptsIn order to avoid confusion, several terms used in this paper are defined below, as compiled by O'Connor (1991). San Diego’s Stadium Conglomerate consists of poorly cemented cobbles, gravel, sand, silt and clay. Conventional laboratory and in-situ testing is not suitable for characterizing its engineering properties. Although the formation is often considered a “rock” its behavior is more readily modeled using soil mechanics. Static and seismic design of a tunnel for the Mission Valley East light rail extension required that the stress-strain characteristics of the ground be identified over a broad strain range. Geophysical methods and field plate load testing were used to develop a full non-linear stress-strain model of the expected ground behavior. Quantification of the coarse material distribution was also required for selection of tunneling methods and construction considerations.

Ausmelt furnace slag contains about 0.9% Cu (mass %). With increasing the amount of Ausmelt furnace slag, the recovery of copper from it will produce an enormous economic yield. The recovery of copper by floatation from slow cooled Ausmelt furnace slag was studied in this paper. The phases and composition of the slow cooled slag were analyzed. The factors which affected the copper recovery efficiency such as grinding fineness, pH value of flotation medium, different collectors and floating process were investigated. It was shown that the size distribution of the primary grinding and secondary grinding of middling were 75% for particles less than 0.074mm and 82% for particles less than 0.043mm respectively. The closedcircuit experimental results with butyl xanthate as collector in laboratory showed that the copper grade reached 16.11% and the recovery rate of copper reached 69.90% and the copper grade of tailings was only 0.2%.

Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

Coal mines in the Illinois Basin have not engaged in pillar recovery for many decades. In large part, this is due to the exceptionally weak nature of much of the roof in the region. But, as room-and-pillar mining is conducted at greater depths, and larger pillars become necessary, recovering them becomes more attractive. Recently a western Kentucky coal mine became the first in recent times to successfully employ full pillar recovery. This paper describes the many challenges that were overcome during the process. From the beginning, the focus was on protecting the miners from roof instability, using cable bolts, mesh, mobile roof supports (MRS), and engineered final stumps. Two short test panels were extracted first, and the results were used to adjust the support pattern and mining sequence. Further adjustments were made based on subsequent experience. To date, seven panels have been recovered without a ground fall injury.

With today's high energy costs per million BTU's, far greater emphasis is placed on increasing thermodynamic efficiency in the use of energy. America has long since discarded its previous golden age of "low cost energy" in the past ten years. Energy costs are now a very significant percentage of operating expense in industrial operations. Public utilities have felt the same influences of increasing costs in energy for the generation of electricity. Not only has the input energy expense increased seriously, but as pointed out by Blackmore in a paper, fuel costs were 53.4% of the total operating costs for American Electric Power Company.

The purpose of this review is to raise awareness about e-waste problem in the World. Whether generated at our home or our office, e-waste is most rapidly growing waste problem in the world. Even though there are conventional disposal methods (such as landfill and incineration) for e-waste, these methods have both economic and environmental disadvantages; recycling is a new waste management option which diverts end-of-life (EOL) electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) from landfill and incineration [1, 2]. Successful diversion strategy must be based on economic sustainability, technical feasibility and social support [3]. Recycling infrastructure includes transportation, collection, recovery and resale establishments. INTRODUCTION The basic mining law of Madagascar is the decree of 1923, signed at Rambouillet by the President of France on July 19, and published in the Journal Official de Madagascar et Dependances. It has been modified by a number of subsequent laves and regulations, generally of minor importance.

Due to the growing share of electrical cars, the use of lithium ion batteries significantly increased. Recycling of these batteries is essential to safely dispose hazardous materials as well as to recover valuables (Cu, Ni, Co, etc.). In order to optimise the recycling process, accurate information is required on the slag phase equilibria for battery smelting. The slag is a multi-component system containing alumina from the battery cases, silica and lime from fluxes, and manganese and lithium from the electrode materials. The present study accurately determined the phase equilibria in the "MnO"-Al2O3-SiO2 sub-ternary system at metal alloy saturation. Particular attention was given to the accuracy and reliability of the final results by highlighting the different reaction pathways, mass transfer- and reaction mechanisms taking place in the system during experiments. This attention enabled improved experimental methodology and measurements. Based on the present study, further measurements will be undertaken in the quaternary "MnO"-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 system at low "MnO" concentrations, which closely represents the future recycling industrial slags.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

This paper provides estimates of large-scale temperature gradients that can be used to support modeling of natural convection and cold-trap processes in thermally perturbed drifts. Temperature influences estimates of the quantity and chemistry of water contacting engineered components (e.g., drip shields and waste packages) in a potential high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Temperature gradients drive natural convection and cold-trap processes, which could affect the distribution, quantity, and chemistry of liquid-phase water contacting drip shields (waste packages).The confluence of high temperatures, liquid-phase water, and high chloride may lead to corrosion of drip shields and waste packages. An overview of the evolution of environmental conditions in thermally perturbed drifts is presented to provide a context for the estimates of temperature gradients. A mountain-scale conduction-only model is used to estimate temperature gradients and temperature differences for a drift located at the center of a potential repository. Thermohydrologic models and heat transfer algorithms are used to evaluate the reasonableness of the conduction-only results. Estimates of temperature using an in-drift heat transfer algorithm account for the possibility of drift degradation and formation of a rubble pile on the drip shield. Temperature differences between the center and ends of the drift are estimated to rapidly increase to 80 °C soon after repository closure. That temperature difference decreases over time to 15 °C after 10,000 years. Local temperature gradients are generally estimated to be less than 0.2°C/m, though the gradients can be much larger near changes in lithology and near the end of the drift. The estimates of temperature gradients do not account for intermediate- and small-scale variations, such as those influenced by differences in heat loads between waste packages, intra-layer variations in thermal properties of the surrounding fractured rock, or localized drift degradation.

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies depending upon structural homogeneity, porosity and gangue quantity. Especially sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favours disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

To assist in the reduction of environmental degradation resulting from milling operations, the Bureau of Mines has developed, and successfully demonstrated, chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative procedures for stabilizing milling wastes under varying environmental conditions. Costs of achieving reclamation using these stabilization procedures are compared with those of other physical and vegetative approaches. The Bureau's chemical-vegetative procedure for establishing vegetation directly on fine-sized wastes compares favorably with other stabilization processes that have been used.

Separation of rare earth elements (REE) is often achieved by acid leaching of mineral concentrates followed by subsequent solvent extraction (SX), to purify individual rare earth metals (REM). Cerium, the most abundant REE, is usually the largest component of these ores. Demand for less prevalent REE, such as praseodymium and dysprosium; have led to a market saturation and price collapse of cerium. One method of improving the economics of REE separation is to remove cerium from solution prior to SX. This is accomplished via the oxidation of cerium (III) to cerium (IV), which precipitates as cerium hydroxides. This study probes the efficacy of four oxidants; hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate, and Caro’s Acid with the goal of improving cerium removal whilst minimizing REE and reagent losses. The effect of oxidant type and dosage, pH, cerium concentration, and temperature on the kinetics of the process will be discussed.

Rock bolting has become a major method of coal mine roof support because of its effectiveness, economy, and convenience. The polymeric-resin-bonded bolt has generally proved to be more effective than the mechanically anchored bolt, but the higher cost of the resin bolt limits it to applications where the increased support is essential. The low-cost high-early-strength cement grout developed during this project will encourage more widespread use of fully grouted roof bolts provided practical installation techniques can be developed. Laboratory tests of four types were performed on various rapid-set and accelerated cement products to find a material with properties suitable for replacing resins. A proprietary gypsum cement was ultimately used with good success. A field test of the cement grout was made in an operating coal mine. An intersection was bolted in the standard pattern with cement-grouted bolts and instrumented. A nearby resin-grouted intersection was also instrumented and observations were carried out in both intersections for 2 months. No substantial difference was found between the support provided by the cement and the resin.

During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned. Steps in Preparation While the past 25 years have contributed a valuable store of working knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy, many of the process controls are derived entirely from experience and are not as yet finally explained by a specific physical or chemical phenomenon. For most of the cemented carbides such difficulties are aggravated by our lack of knowledge not only of the complex alloy systems involved, but also by the possible changes in structure and even in composition which may accompany variations in temperature, heating time, and furnace atmospheres. The principal steps in the preparation of these cemented carbide alloys are fairly well known, but to supply a foundation for discussion these steps are briefly outlined as follows : 1. The chemical states and ions interaction were significant interest to understanding columbite mineral/acid solution interface dissolution and reaction. The present research work was focus to explore the specific cations ( Nb5+, Fe2+, Fe3+) distribution near the ferrocolumbite mineral/acid solution interface, and determine these cations leaching sequence in sulfuric acid solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy had the potential to provide detailed dissolution information by resolving chemical state and ion distribution of ferrocolumbite during sulfuric acid leaching process. The binding energy decreased in sequence as Nb5+- O < Fe2+- O < Fe3+- O, and increased in sequence as Fe3+- SO4 < Fe2+- SO4 < Nb5+- SO4 which revealed Nb in ferrocolumbite mineral more easily leached comparing to Fe. The ratio of Fe2+- O/Fe3+-O on leaching residue decreased, and Fe2+- SO4/Fe3+-SO4 ratio increased as sulfuric acid contraction increasing suggested that the Fe2+ oxidized to Fe3+ and released Nb from mineral and dissolved into leaching solution. The ratio of Nb/Fe was lower 0.07 with sulfuric acid contraction increasing which meant Nb dissolution promoted by oxidation of iron. The dissolution mechanism of Fe element in ferrocolumbite mineral was Fe2+- O broken and generated Fe2+. Fe2+ was oxidized to Fe3+ in concentrated sulfuric acid leaching solution. The dissolution mechanism of Nb in ferrocolumbite was that Nb5+- O was directly digested by H+, and the released Nb5+ complex with SO4 2− ion formed cation − anion pairs. The coordination of formation Nb5+- SO4 pairs and oxidation Fe2+ in mineral could promote ferrocolumbite dissolution.

The application of diamond drills for blast holes is limited to the special Job of extracting floor and stope pillars, and therefore their operation is intermittent. The zinc ore drilled occurs in metamorphosed dolomitic limestone. The mining method is sublevel open-stoping on 200- foot lifts. Ample fresh air is provided by mechanical ventilation. Diamond drilling blast holes began in August 1944. Drills were mount- ed on a 3-inch quarry bar. The contract price for labor for operating equipment owned by the company was $0.23 per foot. The diamond bits were cast-set at the factory in a sintered tungsten matrix. Bit replacement costs were $0.15 to $0.20 per foot drilled. The feet drilled per bit ranged from 87 to 258. The feet drilled per diamond-drill shift ranged from 121 to 129. Holes were loaded with 60-percent special gelatin dyna- mite and fired electrically. In percussion drilling, the estimated feet drilled por machine shift with hand-held sinkers was 65. The tons broken per machine shift averaged 40 throughout the mine. Detachable bits have been adopted recently. The principal advantage of diamond-drilling blast holes at the Balmat mino is the extraction in a safe manner of ore not minable by short-hole drilling. The principal disadvantago is the greater cost per foot of holo in comparison with percussion drilling.
