In a flotation process of copper ore three factors were measured: copper grade in concentrate (β), copper grade in tailings (J) and recovery of copper in concentrate (e). The experiment was conducted by means of the Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were particle size (d), time of separation (t), type of the collector (k) and dosage of the collector (s). The considered vector function was then [β(d, t, k, s), J(d, t, k, s), e(d, t, k, s)]. Optimisation achieved was based on determining the values of the adjustable factors (d, t, k, s). The goal was to obtain the highest possible values of functions β and e (maximum) and the lowest possible values of function J (minimum). To this purpose the taxonomic methods were applied. The initial discovery of gold in the Eastmain River area, 310 km northeast of Chibougamau, was made by Placer Development Limited in 1970. This discovery resulted from the drill testing of an airborne E .M. Target located in an area of extensive glacial overburden, within an unexplored Archean greens tone belt considered prospective for base metal deposits. Intermittent exploration by another company between 1973-1977 failed to obtain promising results and the existing claims were allowed to lapse. In 1981, Placer reactivated the project and initiated intensive exploration during the next two years which included aerial E .M. surveys, claim staking, ground E .M. and magnetic surveys, geological mapping, diamond drilling and attendant borehole P,E.M. surveys. Beginning in 1983, exploration has been conducted on a joint venture basis with Eldor Resources Limited, The greenstone belt under investigation has an arcuate distribution pattern relative to a centrally located granitic core. Occurrences of gold mineralization defined to date are located to the south of the granite along a strike length of 7 km, and appear to be restricted to the lowermost of two mafic volcanic cycles. This lower cycle is dominated by basaltic flows with subordinate rhyolitic flows and pyroclas ties. Concordant, variably magnetic, massive to talcose ultramafic units occur towards the stratigraphic top of the lower mafic volcanic cycle and appear to crudely define areas considered prospective for gold on a regional bases. Economic interest in centered on a s tratabound, siliceous, sulphide-bearing unit hosted in a 15- 25 metre thick sequence of rhyolite tuffs, basalts and intercalated ultramafics, The siliceous ore bearing unit ( interpreted as a recrystallized chert) contains from 10%-30% pyrrhotite and pyrite with subordinate chalcopyri te and minor sphaleri te. Alteration is characterized by mica development, silicification and carbonatization. Garnets are also occasionally present in close proximity to the ore horizon. The sequence is south facing, and overturned to the northeast at 35°-55°. Explora tory drilling in the vicinity of two conductive targets has been on 100 metre centres along a 1 km strike length of the prospective sequence. To the end of 1983, two ore zones (A and B) have been partially drill tested with estimated indicated and inferred geological reserves of 1 million tonnes grading 11.7 g/t gold , 14.7 g/t silver and 0.26% copper. The system is open at depth. This discovery is the result of the effective integration of geophysics and geology with contributions by many over a long period of time. Key events that can be emphasized are: ( 1) initial area selection of a remote greenstone belt in 1969 - albeit for base metal deposits , (2) utilization of an airborne E .M. system which successfully targeted the A Zone in 1970 , (3) the timely reactivation of the project in 1981 and the subsequent recognition that the original discovery represented a sulphide bearing stratabound horizon with implicit volcanogenic connotations , (4) the intensive effort in 1982-83 deploying aerial and ground geophysics coupled to volcanogenic concepts of ore distribution which resulted in the discovery of the B and C Zones in 1982, and (5) the integration of downhole P . E.M. surveys and geology to successfully delineate ore at increasing depths . To the end of 1983 , $2.6 million has been expended, and it is hoped that continued effort will result in the eventual delineation of an economically viable ore deposit for the joint venture partners .

O presente trabalho estuda as características microestruturais e mecânicas de 3 ligas de alumínio (1100, 3104 e 8011) na condição laminada a quente e submetidas a um tratamento térmico de solubilização em diferentes tempos de encharque (1, 2 e 3 horas). As ligas em estudo apresentam um percentual de soluto ligeiramente acima do limite máximo de solubilidade nas mesmas. Assim os tratamentos térmicos de solubilização permitiriam controlar a dimensão, dispersão e natureza dos precipitados presentes modificando a condição laminada a quente, sem atingir a completa dissolução dos mesmos. A avaliação microestrutural/ composicional e mecânica foi feita por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV)/ Espectroscopia de Raios-X de Dispersão de Energia (EDS), Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e ensaios de dureza. De acordo com os resultados apresentados para as ligas 1100 e 8011 o tempo para ocorrer à solubilização está entre 1 e 2 horas enquanto que para a liga 3104 está entre os tempos de 2 e 3 horas.

Kaolin is one of the most important ingredients in porcelain manufacturing. Its main phase is clay mineral containing aluminum hydrosilicate, namely kaolinite. Beside kaolinite it also contains quartz, illite and feldspars, which impair its applicability. Kaolin is a non-reactive material, but metakaolin can be produced by heat treatment (calcination) of kaolin, which is also used by the cement and concrete industry due to its latent hydraulic (pozzolanic) properties. Beside thermal activation, reactive materials can also be produced by mechanochemical activation in general. This paper deals with the mechanochemical activation of kaolin. The raw material was classified into various size fractions, then ground in a batch stirred media mill under varying circumstances (residence time, circumferential velocity). After grinding, the structural changes of the products were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the particle size distribution of the ground material was determined by laser scattering. As a result of the grinding experiments and analytical measurements of the products, it can be clearly seen that reactivity of kaolin can be improved significantly by mechanical activation in a stirred media mill, but due to its high energy density the circumstances were optimised carefully to avoid aggregation. The Urad property had been worked intermittently for over 50 years before American Metal Climax (AMAX) started an extensive exploration program on this property in 1961. The detailed studies of the property proved a large ore body of low grade molybdenum ore that could be mined by modified panel caving methods. Mine development and mill construction for a 5000 TPD operation was completed in July 1967. The Urad mine and plant site is located 55 miles west of Denver near Berthoud Pass. The plant elevation is 10,200 feet. The crushing plant is located underground because available surface area is re¬stricted by snow slide hazards. Crushing plant layout and ventilation system design for the Urad mine was based on our operating experience at similar crushing facilities located at the Climax operations. Low speed conveyors of generous width, adequate exhaust volumes at all ore transfer locations, large hoods and good conveyor skirting have made the Urad underground crusher dust control operations very satisfactory. Good maintenance and cleanup of the crusher facilities have made a clean working area with very low dust exposure. The ore from the mine is dropped approximately 1000 feet through ore passes to scraping drifts above the crusher and then transferred to the coarse ore bin by 150 h.p. slusher hoists. A reciprocating plate feeder under the coarse ore bin feeds a 48 x 60 jaw crusher. Ore from under the crusher is conveyed on a 48 in. belt to a vibrating screen where oversize passes through a 7 ft. Standard cone crusher. The crushed ore along with the screen undersize is conveyed on a 42 in. belt to a 1000 ton surge bin.

It is common to nine a coal seam affected by previous extraction of a coal seam below. As a result of that severe problems may occur during the extraction process. This paper presents the analysis of undermining effects based on field observations. A simplified method for the evaluation of risk in undermining operations is presented and predictions of the degree of possible damages to the undermined coal seam is given.

This paper presents a case history of the design, installation and performance of a tied-back tangent caisson retaining wall which was constructed as part of the Third Harbor Tunnel project currently underway in Boston, Massachusetts. The Third Harbor Tunnel project consists of a large multi-lane transportation tunnel which is being constructed by the sunken tube method. In this type of construction, the tunnel alignment, slopes and bedding are excavated and installed underwater and the tunnel sections floated over the proper alignment and sunk in place. The tangent caisson retaining wall discussed in this paper was constructed to provide support of the upper portions of the tunnel excavation at the East Boston Portal where the tunnel exited from below the harbor and continued underground on shore. A portion of the tangent caisson retaining wall was also utilized to provide earth support for the barge unloading facility where spoil from the tunnel excavation was transferred to surface vehicles for removal from the site. PROJECT BACKGROUND The tangent caisson retaining wall was constructed by The Millgard Corporation (TMC) as a subcontractor to the Boston Third Harbor Tunnel Contractors, a Joint Venture which consisted of the firms of Morrison-Knudsen Corporation, Interbeton Inc., and J.F. White Contracting Company. The entire project team is listed below on Table 1. The design of the tangent caisson wall system was performed by Hanson Engineering, P.C. (HE) acting as design consultant to TMC. The retaining wall system incorporated a single row of pressure injected earth anchors (tie-backs) as part of the design. The earth anchors were designed and installed by Drill Tech as a subcontractor to TMC.

In 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northwest of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and LUX. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J. Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. "INTRODUCTION The predominant characteristic of powdered mica is the thin -plate shape of the particulars, and the thinner the plates, the more enhanced is this characteristic. Consequently, it is frequently desirable to grade mica according to the thickness of the plates. Concerning the various possible methods for grading mica, very little has been published. There is also no information on the relative quantities of mica per given range of plate thickness. This paper presents a graphical method that shows how these quantities are distributed and how the different methods of grading compare.CUMULATIVE BULK DENSITYBulk density, which is an indirect measure of the plate thickness, was determined in a small cylindrical cup of 3.37 cubic centimeters volume. The mica was placed in the cup under a standard procedure. The densities thus measured checked these determined in a 273 cubic centi¬meter cup with less than a 2 percent error.In calculating cumulative densities it is important to know how they are averaged. In any grading operation the bulk density of a series of fractions is determined. Starting with the lowest density fraction, the cumulative percent under-density can be calculated through the various fractions. It is possible that quantity may be measured by volume or weight and that the averaging may be done by a number of methods. However, experimentally it has been shown that the quantity must be by volume and that the averaging must be arithmetic. This is illustrated in table 1, in which the calculated and actual bulk densities are listed."

"A dynamic ventilation-modeling package, VREX, was used to simulate the mine activities through tracking the equipment movements in underground workings and determine the airflow demand for a new production scenario in a ventilation-on-demand (VOD) system. It incorporates the mine development data from a discrete event simulation and balances the ventilation network using the CANVENT ventilation solver. A case study was performed to demonstrate the capabilities of the software, evaluate the performance of the network and determine the potential energy savings for implementing VOD in a deep mine operation.INTRODUCTIONThe ventilation cost of an underground mine can be significant—up to 50% of the mine’s energy consumption could be used to run fans and provide heat/refrigeration to meet the specified production environment for workers and equipment. The VOD system has proven to be more efficient in operating the fans and supplying the amount of air corresponding to the mine activities taking place in underground workings (Hardcastle, Kocsis, & O’Connor, 2006). In order to properly solve and evaluate the VOD system, a dynamic ventilation modeling software VREX—the ventilation rules engine has been developed to simulate the mine activities and determine the airflow demand for each production scenario within an operation period (Dasys & Cameron, 2011).VREX is a decision support tool, backed by the CANVENT mine ventilation solver (Li, Kocsis, & Hardcastle, 2009), for determining the outcomes of network configuration changes over time. The software incorporates the mine development data with ventilation modeling through the discrete event simulation (DES) performed by SimMineTM. As it simulates the air requirements for different vehicles and activities, VREX can evaluate both the performance of the ventilation system and the potential economic benefits of making operational or technological changes (Pritchard, 2010). For example, the model can be used to assess the economic and environmental impacts arising from modifying regulations to support the use of electric or lower emission vehicles. The combination of DES and ventilation modeling provides a new technology to generate the production scenarios according to mine schedules and activities and to determine the potential benefits for various levels of ventilation control, such as time interval and work shift change."

The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.

Abstract - The West Meliadine area is underlain by structurally interleaved panels of mafic and minor ultramafic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks that occur along the northern margin of the Neoarchean Rankin Inlet greenstone belt. Three structural and metamorphic domains are recognized: (1) the easterly Wesmeg domain; (2) the central Barracuda-Ridge domain; and (3) the westerly Peter Lake domain. The Wesmeg domain is characterized by a series of southeast-trending, north-dipping, foliation-parallel panels of greenschist facies mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The Barracuda-Ridge domain is comprised of greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks that define an east-northeast-trending structural grain. The Peter Lake domain consists of amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks and minor metasedimentary rocks intruded by a monzonite pluton. West Meliadine hosts the economically significant Wesmeg gold deposits, as well as other important gold showings across the Barracuda-Ridge and Peter Lake domains. The geological setting of the Wesmeg gold deposits resembles that of a break or fault zone. The Pyke Break is a major geophysical discontinuity (>65-km strike length) and is the first-order structural control on gold mineralization at West Meliadine. It is several kilometers wide and characterized by polyphase deformation and shear zone development accompanied by lode-gold mineralization. In general, gold concentration is related to quartz and iron-carbonate veining, iron sulfides (mainly arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite), and accompanying silicate alteration minerals that overprint favorable chemical and structural traps late in the history of deformation.

"Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

"The Kinross Kubaka Project is a gold mine located in the Russian Far East. The grinding circuit, comprised of a 6.1 m diameter x 2.74 m long SAG mill and a 4.1 m diameter x 5.5 m long secondary ball mill in closed circuit with cyclones, was built using SAG Power Index and Bond Ball Mill Work Index testing to determine the grinding energy requirements. Extremely cold climatic conditions and the need to keep heated space and capital costs to a minimum, dictated a grinding circuit with no in-circuit crusher and no conveyors external to the mill. High energy requirements for both the SAG mill and the ball mill were correctly predicted and have allowed grinding production tonnage forecasts to be met. Design test data and production results are given.INTRODUCTIONIn 1995 Davy International Canada, now Kvaerner Metals E & C, was commissioned as the Engineer and Project Manager for the Omolon Gold Mining Company, to design and construct a gold extraction plant for the Kubaka gold deposit, located in the Russian Far East. This deposit had been studied extensively in Russia during the exploration phase and a Feasibility Study was completed in 1993 by Kilborn who visited the site twice during that year to inspect facilities and to take metallurgical test samples. More samples were taken in 1995 to check ore hardness variability, as part of the final design program by Davy.The client’s objective in designing the Kubaka grinding circuit was to achieve design tonnage at all times, even when milling the hardest ore zones in the deposit. Since the samples taken in 1993 were taken as composite samples, it was necessary to take additional samples in 1995 to determine the extent of the variability. Six samples were sent to Canada for SAG Power Index (SPI) testing. Five of these were combined as a composite open pit sample, while the sixth sample was taken from the site adits as a composite sample to represent undergound ore. These two composite samples were tested to determine the MacPherson Autogenous Work Index for comparison with the SPI values."

Subsurface fires are a common threat to coal mining, as spontaneous combustion of coal can potentially result in gas combustion and explosion. Fire-proof techniques, such as grouting, foam, or colloid injection, are not in a position to function ideally, due to the limited coverage and stopping the extinguishment substance from reaching the fire location. Liquid nitrogen, as a kind of all-submerged fire prevention or extinguishing method, can rapidly extinguish fires, thus preventing gas explosion and minimising extinguishment time. Injecting liquid nitrogen through boreholes is an important way during the period of mine catastrophe. But liquid nitrogen is not effective enough in infusion; technical issues restrict the development and utilisation of liquid nitrogen fire prevention and extinguishing technology. Immediate infusion of liquid nitrogen is usually associated with ‘air slug’ (the balloons and bubbles in the pipeline which hinder the flow of low-temperature liquid), which blocks pipelines for liquid nitrogen injecting. Another issue is that the pipeline tends to be damaged due to freezing, which undermines the injecting efficiency of liquid nitrogen and its application result. In order to solve the problems of the low efficiency and some other related field issues in liquid nitrogen perfusion, the ground–underground high efficiency liquid nitrogen injection technology were developed. Implementation of liquid nitrogen infusion techniques in Chinese coalmines achieved the goals of fire prevention and air-cooling. The technique presented in this paper is efficient in absorbing heat, and consequently, displacing oxygen and combustible gases. Field tests at Rujigou and Yangchangwan Coalmine justified the efficiency of the technique. By using this technique, there was no waste left behind, which may impede the subsequent production. The presented technique is of great benefit to the social, economic, and environmental aspects of mining operations, and will have broad applications in fire prevention for large-scale coalmines.CITATION:Zhou, F, Shi, B, Li, Y and Ma, L, 2015. "Mining towns have always been an important part of Canadian geography. Many Canadians grew up in them. The frontiers of northern Canada would be a lot closer to the United States border but for the pioneering of new mines, new towns, and new transportation routes. Names such as Labrador City, Chibougamau, Val d’Or, Rouyn-Noranda, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Sudbury, Red Lake, Thompson, Flin Flon, Yellowknife, Whitehorse,Trail and Kimberley are some of the better known larger communities that have grown to become major commercial and government centres, but which started as the base for a mining development.Many other smaller towns never grew beyond being small communities, dependent upon the local mine and many of these are still alive, but perhaps not quite what they used to be. In this list would be Buchans, Schefferville, Chapais, Cadillac, Virginia town, Lynn Lake, Uranium City, Pine Point, and Keno Hill.Nevertheless, all these towns and dozens more like them were residential communities where people lived and raised families and were quite accustomed to being days from the major centres of Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver, and not just hours away as wet end to measure travelling time today."

Years before iron and steel works were established at Sydney, several thriving although short-lived iron works operated in Nova Scotia. These furnaces reflected the general nineteenth-century North American experience with iron works. At the beginning of the century, small furnaces struggled to supply local needs. Charcoal was the principal fuel and water powered most furnace equipment. By the end of the century, a few huge primary iron and steel works dominated production for Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada. Two sites achieved prominence in the nineteenthcentury Nova Scotia iron industry: Londonderry and Ferrona (Fig. 1). Londonderry, the larger and longerlasting of the two sites, is today a small village on the south flank of the Cobequid Mountains, about 30 km west of Truro. Prior to the establishment of an iron works in 1849, no community existed. At the peak of operation in the 1880s, however, over 2600 people were located there. The second site, Ferrona, today is a mere crossroads on the map, about 10 km south of New Glasgow. Following the construction of a blast furnace there in 1892, a small village grew up around the furnace. But once the furnace was blown out in 1904, the population gradually drifted away.

Ferroalloys are integral part of steel melting process. The purpose of using ferroalloys is three fold e.g. killing of steel, modifying the slag composition and steel alloying. Amount of ferroalloys used for alloying is subject to requirements of steel properties e.g. yield strength, ductility, formability etc. Variety of ferroalloys (some-times pure metal) is used by steel industries depending upon their techno-economic feasibility. Size, chemistry and modes of addition of ferroalloys are suitably engineered to bring in operational consistency and cost benefits. Of late, Tata Steel has tried out a few ferroalloys for the first time with interesting results to meet the specific requirements of high strength interstitial free (IF) and micro-alloyed steels. Some of these ferroalloys have been put into regular use with complete or partial replacement of ferroalloys used earlier. Size of one of the ferroalloys has also been modified without any other adverse effects. This paper summarizes requirements of ferroalloys for the steel industry with special emphasis on recent trials.
