The change of gas emission or concentration level at the working face is one of the main precursor characteristics of coal and gas outburst. At present, coal and gas outburst monitoring and early warning are mainly based on whether it exceeds the limit and its change law. However, the gas concentration level is affected by factors such as coal seam gas content, permeability, and mining process, and the change law is complex to recognize manually. In this paper, the response characteristics of gas concentration level in the mining process are analyzed and revealed, and a bidirectional long short-term memory model is established. The change characteristics of the gas concentration level in the mining and non-mining processes are studied and recognized. The results show that the change law of gas concentration in the mining process has apparent periodicity and trapezoidal volatility. The proposed intelligent recognition method based on the bidirectional long short-term memory neural network can automatically recognize the underground mining and non-mining processes, and the recognition accuracy achieves 97.7% . The research can significantly help improve the level of coal mine safety management and the accuracy of early warning of coal and gas outburst.

In this study, free fall tests are conducted with the objective of understanding the breakage properties of waste concrete for the guide of the direction of the better comminution process. Waste concrete of 75mm×53mm is tested at various drop heights with or without heat pretreatment. Test results indicate that a block of waste concrete does not break by free fall, but eventually breaks by repeated free falls. The number of free falls required for complete separation of large aggregates from the cement mortar considerably reduced when the samples were heated at 400?. Therefore, a great energy saving can be obtained when heating the waste concrete prior to crushing. The energy saving was found to be dependent on the height of free fall but in all cases, was still large enough to offset the additional energy required for heating. Also, it was found that the heat pre-treatment gives an additional advantage in that it produced cleaner recycled aggregates. This may result from easier detachment of cement mortar from the aggregates due to weakening of bonding forces by heating. By analyzing the size distribution of the crushed product, a free-fall breakage model is developed using the particle breakage ratio and the breakage pattern. The developed model can be used to predict and to analyze waste concrete processing circuit.

Coal dust explosions in underground coal mines are prevented by generous application of rock dust (usually limestone). If an explosion should occur, the rock dust disperses, mixes with the coal dust and prevents flame propagation by acting as a thermal inhibitor or heat sink. To investigate this process in more detail, a number of explosion experiments using various coal dust and limestone rock dust mixes have been carried out at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). These were conducted in a single entry of about 1600 ft (488m) in length and initiated with a methane gas explosion. A consistent set of post-explosion floor dust samples were taken along the entry after each test. These dust samples have been analyzed in the laboratory using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and solubility to determine how the limestone rock dust behaved during the coal dust / rock dust explosions. The preliminary results are reported in this paper and indicate that the chemistry of limestone plays an important role in its capacity to inhibit coal dust explosions. The results also show that it may be possible to estimate the intensity of the explosion using these conventional methods of analysis. Baotou Baiyunerbo Mines Location in Inner Mongolia is a famous deposit of iron mineral and rare earth mineral accreting. The iron ore has very complicated ingredients and minerals composing. In the mine, there is not only magnetite ore but also hematite ore, so that it is impossible for high grade iron concentrate to adopt single wet low-intensity magnetic separation or high-intensity magnetic separation to concentrate iron mineral. Because of mixing the magnetite with hematite mineral in feed ore, recovery of iron of magnetite production system in the mineral processing plant is less than other mineral processing plants. Therefore, the research for increasing recovery of iron of the magnetite production system in the plant was undertaken. The paper presented the research for using dry magnetic separation to increase recovery of iron concentrate of the magnetite production system in the plant. It mainly includes dry magnetic separation test and wet magnetic separation and reverse flotation test. The test results indicated that dry magnetic separation is a important way to improve the feature of feed ore of the magnetite production system and to increase the recovery of iron. The recovery of iron may increase from about 70% to over 80%. The research also presented optimum operation parameters of the dry magnetic separator and the separation flowsheet. In conclusion, using dry magnetic separation to treat with feed ore of the magnetite production system in the plant to increase the recovery of iron is a feasible technique. The research present a new way for the mineral processing plant to made technology innovate to increase the recovery of iron concentrate of the plant in future.

Solvent-coated air bubbles in the Air-Assisted Solvent Extraction (AASX) process achieve the dual role of high solvent specific surface area and ease of phase separation. The thickness of the solvent film is of fundamental interest but difficult to measure directly in the process itself. As an approach interferometry (in the UV-vis region) was used to measure the time dependent thickness of a film formed by blowing an air bubble in kerosene-based solvents. The film was stabilized by the presence of 1.5 ppm silicone oil, as employed in AASX. The film appears to comprise two layers; an outer "free" layer of almost constant thickness and an inner "bound" layer which decreased in thickness with time. The bound layer is considered relevant to AASX. For a 20 mm diameter bubble blown in LIX/kerosene solvent the initial thickness was ~ 3 um which decreased over 10 minutes to a final rupture thickness of 500 nm. The bound layer thickness and time to rupture decreased with decreasing bubble size. Correspondence to prior indirect estimates of solvent layer thickness is examined.

"A variety of reagents are utilized in coal preparation, but aside from performing their desired function relatively little is known about the behavior of these reagents within the processing circuits. Where exactly do reagents go once dosed? In this paper, we present preliminary results of partitioning studies on frother (i.e., MIBC) and collector (i.e., diesel) chemicals commonly used in coal flotation, and examine implications for water management (e.g., in closed-loop systems). Additionally, we discuss the usefulness of such data in predicting environmental transport and fate of chemicals – which is currently a top priority for industry.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of coal preparation is to upgrade mined coal into more valuable products. Since coal is primarily used as a fuel source for electricity generation, product specifications are typically contracted to minimize unwanted constituents that detract from the overall heat value (e.g., ash and moisture) or that add to environmental pollution or other problems like corrosion at a power plant (e.g., sulfur) (Pitt & Millward, 1979). Failure to meet specifications results in a financial penalty for the coal producer (Szwilski, 1986), and thus preparation processes have evolved to simultaneously optimize recovery of valuable “clean” coal with rejection of mineral matter and moisture. In addition to advancements in equipment and circuitry, development and application of various chemical reagents has dramatically improved the performance of coal preparation processes.Contemporary preparation plants typically include multiple circuits that can be categorized by the size of particles they process: coarse, intermediate, and fine/ultra-fine (Figure 1). Coarse and intermediate circuits generally rely on size classification and gravity separations (e.g., dense-media cyclones), and do not require significant chemical reagents. However, fine and ultra-fine circuits often use froth flotation to separate coal from impurities, which requires chemical additives (Table 1). The primary additives include collectors, which coat the surface of the coal particles to render them (more) hydrophobic and thus more likely to attach to air bubbles and float; and frothers, which aid in the formation and stability of the froth that will accumulate the floated coal particles. Modifiers are also commonly added to flotation circuits to regulate pH in instances where coal or impurity characteristics may change water chemistries (Laskowski, 2001). Following flotation, coagulants and flocculants are often utilized in solid-liquid separations (i.e., dewatering or clarification) for coal products, and for tailings slurries prior to their disposal in impoundments. Coagulants function via double-layer compression1 to bring colloidal particles together, while flocculants promote bridging between the grouped colloids – and the combined result is enhanced sedimentation (Wills, 2006). Defoaming or anti-foaming agents may also be required to avoid fouling of dewatering operations."

CaF2is often used as a fluoride addition to the chloride salt flux in the melting of aluminium scrap. The solubility of CaF2in the chloride salt system is limited. Dissolved CaF2is considered to improve the properties of salt fluxes. Experimental investigations indicated that the solubility ofCaF2in 70 wt % NaCl/30 wt % KCl, German salt flux used in aluminium scrap melting, might be lower than expected according to literature data. The pseudo binary section CaF2-(70 wt % NaCl-30 wt % KCl) was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The determined solubility of CaF2appeared to be considerably lower than presented in the literature. The pseudo binary section calculated using thermodynamic data partially confirmed the results. DTA allowed us alsoto determine the crystallization temperature interval of the two phase eutectic consisting of the solid solution NaCl-KCl and CaF2. The nickel-bearing laterite deposits in the Pine Flat and Diamond Flat areas, Del Norte County, Calif., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent and nickel content of the two deposits and the amenability of the ores to metallurgical treatment. The work was based on drill-hole sampling and metallurgical tests in which attrition scrubbing and sizing, reduction roasting, and magnetic separation were used. Results of the sampling indicated that the deposits are comparatively small and are marginal or submarginal in grade. Metallurgical tests showed that no separation of cobalt from nickel and iron was made by sizing; however, a large portion of the chromium was separated. Reduction roasting and magnetic separation did result in upgrading the iron, nickel, and cobalt, and the simultaneous rejection of chromium.

La seule production de columbo-tantalite réalisée en Côte d?Ivoire est effectuée dans les éluvions et alluvions du gisement d?Issia, localisé au Centre- Ouest de la Côte d?Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n?a été accordée à l?étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l?évolution des granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent : le granite orienté à deux micas (Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale des granites montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type- S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite d?Issia fut le dernier à se mettre en place. Les pegmatites liées au granite d?Issia ont été classées en quatre types : Apegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et Dpegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV - zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartz. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d?altération métasomatique externe. La minéralisation de Ta, Nb et Be est liées à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, et celle de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n?importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite d?Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite d?Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite d?Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma.

Common water-miscible organic solvents including DMSO, DMF, methanol, ethanol, acetone and THF in combination with HCl and low concentrations of H2O2 were investigated for dissolution of gold. THF showed the best result demonstrating that gold powder could be completely dissolved in 1.5 hours in 1.0 mol/L HCl and 0.2 mol/L H2O2. No complete gold dissolution was observed for the rest of solvents even after 24 hours. The rate of gold dissolution was measured by dissolving gold wire in THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture. The rate of gold dissolution in optimised condition was 75 g m-2 h-1 at room temperature and significantly increased to 590 g m-2 h-1 by raising the temperature up to 60 oC. Although a THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture showed a slower dissolution rate in comparison with aqua regia, however the applied conditions are considerably milder which is highly promising for gold leaching in an industrial scale.

Common brattice cloths in use in Australian coal mines are compared by permeability measurements. The respective advantages of twill weave and tarpauling* weave cloths are listed, and the improvements to be obtained in the ventilation of a mine by using tarpauling cloths instead of the commonly used twill cloths are stressed. Plastic cloths are widely used overseas and are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe onset of extensive full-scale mechanization in Australian coal mines during the past few years has increased attention given to the ventilation of working places. Many inadequacies of the present system have been brought to light and not the least of these is connected with the use of brattice cloth, both in directing the flow of air around the face and in acting as a temporary sealing mechanism. A well-constructed line of brattice will only provide fair ventilation for a distance of 100 ft. Beyond this point the volume or air reaching the face falls off rapidly.Some of the shortcomings associated' with the use of brattice cloths are:1. Hurried installation, necessitated by a rapid advance, often results in poor workmanship with, consequently, an excessively high leakage rate.2. High places caused by falls of roof are difficult and time-consuming to seal.3. Curtains, in lines of brattice crossing transport routes, are difficult to maintain.4. Bacterial strains have been cultivated from solids previously exposed to cyanide that will tolerate 300 ppm sodium cyanide under anaerobic conditions. In selected solid samples, these bacteria have been shown to reduce the level of cyanide from approximately 300 ppm to essentially zero in about 50 days under anaerobic conditions. Various media were investigated, and the nutrients providing maximal growth were ?established .. Degradation of cyanide in sterilized solids was determined for comparison with degradation obtained in bioactive solids. All experiments were conducted at ambient temperature and initial pH of approximately 10.5.

"Accurate on-line assays of mineral slurries are the basis for effective operation of flotation circuits. Typically the elemental content measurements are obtained by an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, which samples the process lines and performs the analysis concurrently line-by-line. For a more frequent measurement of each slurry line the XRF measurements can be complemented with reflectance spectrum information. In reflectance spectroscopy the absorbance properties of the slurry in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range are analyzed. The advantage of reflectance spectroscopy is that measurements can be obtained quickly and simultaneously from several slurry lines. However, since the shape of the spectrum is only indirectly affected by the slurry elemental contents, frequent calibration of the measurement against the XRF analyzer is necessary. This study elaborates the combination of reflectance spectrum analysis with XRF. Results of laboratory tests for different slurries are presented and the operation of the system in a copper-zinc flotation plant is demonstrated.IntroductionElemental analysis of mineral flotation slurries is the most important factor in evaluating the performance of concentration processes. Timely on-line assays are also used as the basis for controlling the circuits and ensuring that the grade and recovery targets are reached. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the dominant technology in on-line elemental slurry analysis, and typically centralized XRF analyzers are used. The advantage of a centralized analyzer is that one measurement probe can be used to acquire the data from several slurry lines. This reduces the overall operating cost of the system when compared to distributed analyzer system design with several measurement probes requiring maintenance and spare parts. Slurry samplers are installed in the interesting process flows and representative sample flows are brought to the analyzer, where the slurry is further sampled and measured consecutively by the XRF analyzer. Due to the centralized structure of the analyzers and consecutively measurement of the sampling lines the sampling interval per slurry line can be relatively long. In larger concentration plants with several sampling lines a typical assay interval is in the range of 10-20 minutes."

Phyllite waste rock at the Simandou Pic de Fon and Oueleba Iron Ore deposits (Guinea, West Africa) variably weather to form clay-rich rocks. This weathering modifies the mineralogical, geochemical and mechanical properties of the phyllites. Final pit walls will largely be formed in phyllite, so it is critical that the slope design takes account of the distribution and variability of weathering within this material. Phyllite intact material strength has been correlated with geochemistry (ie mineralogy) facilitating the establishment of domains of intact rock strength (IRS). In order to calibrate this geochemically-based strength model, core from diamond drilling (DD), comprising a variety of phyllite material types (from soft clay to moderate strength rock), was geotechnically logged to assess intact strength; further validation was achieved by uniaxial compression (UCS) testing and point load tests (PLT). The correlation between geochemistry and strength offers a potentially powerful tool for differentiating basic mechanical properties of the rock mass, especially at Simandou where a significant proportion of the resource drilling is done by reverse circulation (RC). Unlike DD, reliable measurements of material strength from RC samples can prove difficult, especially in clay-rich material. Therefore, gaining information from routine geochemical assay results, independent of the sampleÆs physical integrity, is a valuable and cost-effective source of reliable empirical data. Data acquired using this approach provides an opportunity to develop strength domains, which are integrated into mine planning block models. In combination with other geotechnical characteristics, this can be a valuable input to the development of geotechnical models. Pore-filling organic material concentrated uranium to form sandstone-hosted primary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Grants uranium region, New Mexico. Petrographic observations and radiometric ages for primary ore in the Westwater Canyon Member require that the organic material was emplaced early in the diagenetic history of the host sandstone; in fact, organic material was emplaced before major compaction. This inferred early emplacement constrains models concerning the nature and origin of the organic material and thus also constrains models of ore genesis. Reconstruction of the burial history of the basin indicates that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the interval of inferred emplacement of the organic material, was probably not a time of hydrocarbon generation and migration. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, elemental abundances, and isotopic studies provide further constraints on the nature of the organic material, and data from these studies are consistent with a humic acid rather than an oil origin. In addition, the overall tabular shape of primary uranium orebodies and the way these orebodies are suspended in the host sandstone mimics Recent deposits of humate, the precipitated form of humic acids. The critical clue that favors a humic acid origin for ore-related organic material is provided by the nature and patterns of postdepositional alterations that are spatially and temporally related to primary ore, specifically destruction of detrital magnetite and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide) grains. Humic acids are implicated in the destruction of iron-titanium oxide grains because these organic acids are one of the most effective natural agents in leaching of Iron from these grains. Thus, timing constraints, chemical evidence, orebody geometry, and the nature and patterns of ore-related alterations favor a humic acid origin and suggest that an oil origin is highly unlikely. Because alteration of iron-titanium oxide grains tracks the pathways of humic-bearing solutions through the host sandstones, it is possible to trace these solutions back to their source. Alteration patterns in the Westwater Canyon Member suggest that the humic-bearing solutions originated as pore fluids in the mudflat facies of the overlying Brushy Basin Member and moved into adjacent sandstones during early dewatering of the mudstones. The humic acids precipitated, by the process of cation loading, in tabular layers. Uranium was concentrated within these tabular layers by complexation with the humic acids to form primary uranium orebodies.

I do not regard the criticism by Rankin of my work as valid or even meaningful. I strongly reject the assertion by Rankin that my results are invalid. As stated in my paper, the equation to solve (in e. m.u. ) is: [ ] where n2 =4 ps? . This may be rewritten as three scalar equations in Cartesian coordinates, one of which is [ ] The equation to be solved is the diffusion equation, and it is not appropriate to consider waves in this context. In the method a point-wise solution to the problem is approximated. As discussed in my paper the approach taken at discontinuities in conductivity is to choose the normal component of [E] at the discontinuity as the average of the normal components on either side of the discontinuity. This is similar to the well-known assumption made in obtaining Fourier series representations for piecewise continuous functions (Pipes, 1958; p. 51). In the geophysical problem this means that the discontinuity is approximated by a transition zone, which is a very good approximation for such cases. By using this approach, both the values of the function and its derivatives give a good estimate for those associated with the physical situation. It is not apparent and Rankin has not shown that "all the field components and the derivatives are grossly distorted in the region about the boundary" for geophysically realistic situations. He has given no evidence to support his assertation that the results are "invalid". Although Rankin declares that one cannot calculate the electric components from the magnetic, in his discussion he has not stated why this is so. After once calculating the magnetic components the electric components may be calculated, but one must insure that the initial solution is accurate enough to prevent significant round-off errors.

"Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

No mineral resources were delineated during our investigation of the Antelope Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Only a few claims have been located in the area and only four workings were found. There has been, however, considerable exploration and mining activity in and near the south end of the study area. The Morey mining district, just southeast of the WSA, produced silver, and lesser amounts of gold and lead, sporadically from the mid-1860's through the mid-1960's. Long Lac Mineral Exploration (Texas), Inc. is actively exploring a large block of claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block extends into the study area. The WSA, located midway between Tonopah and Eureka, encompasses approximately 87,400 acres. It is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. At least three areas in the Paleozoic rocks have many of the favorable criterion for hot-spring type gold deposits; they have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. With additional exploration in the south part of the Antelope WSA, gold resources may be discovered.
