The Cretaceous limestone wells of the Mara/Maru-caibo Dist. of Venezuela are extremely prolific producers. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, large scale gas-lift operations were commenced involving high production rates on caring Flow. For the design of these gas-lift installations it was essential to have some knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in casing flow, so that the required injection pressures, optimum gas injection raws, etc., could be forecast. This paper presents a method of calculating these annular pressure gradients. Basically the method makes use of an energy balance equation coupled with an empirical energy loss factor derived from field data. The calculations have been put in a form suitable for "punch card-type" calculating machines. A set of gradient curves for Mara/Maracaibo conditions covering flow rates up to 12,000 B/D, and GOR's of 500 to 2,000 cu fd/bbl is presented. From these curves the flowing BHP can be predicted from surface data and the vertical pow performance under varying conditions of gas injection can be estimated. The method has been applied to La Paz and Mam gas-lift operations for over three years and has given consistently accurate results. INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous limestone fields of the Mara/Maracaibo area in Venezuela are characterized by the presence of widely distributed fissure systems. Under these conditions individual wells frequently have extremely high potentials and such wells are generally flowed on the casing-tubing annulus in order to reduce the pressure loss in vertical flow. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, an extensive gas-lift system was planned. As a first approach to this gas-lift design problem, an attempt was made to construct a set of empirical flowing gradient curves from the available subsurface pressure data. Such a method has been used successfully for tubing-flow conditions in California by Gilbert'. Unfortunately, the empirical construction of casing-flow gradient curves presents additional difficulties, as pres- sure bombs cannot bc run in the casing-tubing annulus against high rates of flow. Thus, the Full flowing gradients cannot be defined by actual measurement and the best that can be done is to obtain spot pressures at the tubing shoe. Under these conditions a vast accumulation of BHP data is required to construct a set of gradients. To the La Paz and Mara fields the majority of the available flowing pressure measurements fall into a relatively narrow GOR range, in the neighborhood of the solution ratio. While there appeared to be reasonable prospects of constructing gradient curves for this limited range, measurements at higher GOR's, which were of major interest for gas-lift operations, were relatively few and the prospects of constructing empirical curves cor~spondingly remote. As an alternative approach, the possibilities of a mathematical analysis of vertical flow conditions were investigated. May and Laird2fV n 1934 presented an excellent analysis of the vertical-flow conditions in the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.'s fields. Their analysis was based on an energy-balance equation and calculated the losses due to kinetic energy, friction and slippage separately. By combining these losses with the total calculated available energy, the required depth-pressure traverse could be deduced. On applying the method to La Paz conditions, good results were obtained for tubing flow at high tubing-head pressures. However, for lower wellhead pressures (300 psi and under) the discrepancy between calculated and measured values increased appreciably. It was considered that this was probably due to energy losses caused by slippage or liquid hang-up in a continuous gas phase, for which it was difficult to visualize any analytical approach. In 1952 Poettmann and Carpenter4 presented a method of pressure gradient calculation which, while based on an energy-balance equation similar to that employed by May and Laird, made no attempt to evaluate the various components making up the total energy loss resulting from irreversibilities of flowing fluids. Instead, they proposed a method of analysis which assumed that all significant losses for multiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional losses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. Conventional methods of underground surveying use theodolites/total stations and 3D laser scanners to obtain information about the underground environment. Current methods of geo-referencing these instruments to a mine reference system include triangulation, trilateration and resection. However, despite technological advancements, surveying procedures have remained slow, laborious and relatively unchanged during the last half-century. Recent innovations in the robotics community have shown that automated mapping of underground mining tunnels can be undertaken using 2D/3D laser scanners. These techniques have the potential to, in turn, improve upon current underground surveying and mapping methods. Automating surveying and mapping using current surveying tools without changing the setting up procedures or removing current constraints, or even changing the type of equipment used, does not change the status quo. The problem of moving from a static, tripod based surveying and mapping system to an unconstrained mobile surveying and mapping system is the subject of this paper. A current challenge for automated mapping is the ability to automatically geo-reference a mobile mapping system to a mine reference system. For a mobile mapping system that uses a horizontally mounted 2D laser scanner to gather data of the underground environment, the challenge of determining its position and orientation within the mine environment is magnified even more. This paper introduces Mobile Automated Scanner Triangulateration (MAST), a technique under development at Queen?s that is designed to geo-reference a mobile mapping system to a mine reference system for the purposes of underground mine surveying. MAST quickly and automatically determines scanner 2D position and orientation (azimuth) in a mine reference frame by using minimal human input.

This paper presents a population balance model (PBM) for describing the agglomeration process and select a suitable coalescence kernel that can simultaneously describe nucleation, layering and coalescence mechanisms. The PBM is solved numerically by making use of a size discretization procedure in order to simulate iron ore agglomeration in rotating drums where moist feed is added to preformed seeds. Subsequently, a comparison of computer simulation results with the previously published experimental data is provided. Finally, the paper discusses how the current approach can be further extended to the simulation of industrial iron ore agglomeration circuits operated in closed circuit.

The deformation modes of rhenium have been identified as those typical of the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium whose c/a ratios, in common with rhenium, are less than ideal for close packing. Slip is observed on (1010), (1011), and (0001) planes and twinning on (1121), (1122), and (1012) planes. The very high rate of work hardening is believed to be associated with intersecting partial dislocations on two (1010) systems which can combine to form sessile barriers. If the stacking fault energy is low, as postulated by Seeger, these barriers should be strong and not easily bypassed by cross slipping. Such an explanation could also account for the very small temperature dependence of the yield stress which was observed. RHENIUM is interesting scientifically as a member of the group of high melting point hexagonal metals: titanium, beryllium, and zirconium with a c/a ratio less than that for ideal close packing. Unlike them, however, it work hardens at a very high rate. This rate is greater and continues to a much higher degree of deformation than for nickel, normally considered to have a high rate of work hardening. This paper presents experimental observations on the modes of deformation of rhenium and, by comparison with other hexagonal metals, some speculation on the cause of the high work hardening. MATERIALS Johnson, Matthey rhenium powder of both 99.9 pct and 99.5 pct purity, see Table I, was compacted at 10 tons per sq in., part sintered at 1350°C in vacuo, and finally arc melted in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace to produce small buttons. Little difference was observed in the as-cast hardness or working down behavior of the two purities suggesting that either silicon and potassium do not have a significant effect on the working properties of rhenium or they were lost during arc melting. SPECIMEN PREPARATION The cast structure was broken up by cold-rolling with inter-stage annealing at 1600o or 1800°C in a vacuum high-frequency furnace using a tungsten susceptor. Strip for tensile testing was taken from two thicknesses of material 0.011 and 0.064 in. The former with intermediate anneals at 1800°C had a grain size of 900 grains per sq mm, while the latter with inter-stage annealing at 1600°C had a grain size of 3600 grains per sq mm. A coarse grain size was obtained by secondary recrystallization in a half button cold-worked by 30 pct reduction. Annealing times of from half an hour to several hours at 2200° to 2600°C in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace1 resulted in grains of up to 2 mm diam.

"The TiO2-rich slag and pig iron can be produced from ilmenite concentrate by the electric furnace process. In this study, ilmenite concentrate was reduced in a vertical furnace equipped with a weighting data acquisition system. The effects of reducing agent (carbon) amount on the iron reduction were studied. The phase transformation, morphology and chemical compositions of reduced samples were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. It was found that the reductive degree of ilmenite concentrate increased with the increase of reducing time. The phases of reduced samples were mostly iron, rutile, Ti3O5 and Fe2TiO5. The mass loss percentage increased with increasing the carbon amount from 8% to 12%. When the carbon amount exceeded 12%, the mass loss percentage decreased with the increasing of carbon amount.IntroductionIlmenite and rutile are the main raw materials for producing titania pigment and titanium metal. With the development of the titanium industry, huge amounts of titanium resources are needed. As sources of high-grade titania mineral decrease worldwide, more attention should be paid to the processes involving low grade mineral such as ilmenite ore. In ilmenite, MgO and CaO are the gangue parts. Therefore, the ilmenite refining becomes more and more popular. In the previous studies, the methods of ilmenite refining are electric furnace smelting, direct acid leaching, selective chlorination and thermal reduction [1]. Electric furnace smelting method is widely used in the titanium industry, however, which consumes a great deal of energies and has a high CO2 emission. Its essence is to remove iron oxides and obtain a high titania slag. So the thermal reduction of ilmenite concentrate is an important step in titanium industry, which can decrease carbon reagent consumption and save energy.Over the past several decades, many studies have been carried out on the mechanism and kinetics of the reduction of different ilmenite ores, which are as follows: The carbothermal reduction of Panzhihua ilmenite initiated at about 860 oC. In the temperatures ranging from 900 oC to 1400 oC, the reaction rate was changed like a shape of “M”. That was to say that the reaction rate increased with the growth of temperature at first, then decreased, afterward increased again and at last the reaction was arrested [2]. The Mohammad A.R group [3, 4] showed that the carbothermal reduction of primary ilmenite concentrate was faster in hydrogen and initiated at a lower reduced temperature than in argon and helium. The reduction in argon and helium had about the same rate and extent. Titanium oxycarbide started at 1000°C in hydrogen. The conversion of primary ilmenite concentrate to metallic iron and titanium oxycarbide at 1200 °C was completed in 300 minutes. Monoxide as the reductant to reduce ilmenite had been studied intensively by a few research groups [5, 6]. The rate and the degree of reduction depended on the formation of a metallic shell of iron which inhibited the transfer of CO to the reaction zones; titanium had a strong effect on the mechanism and rate of reduction of iron oxides. Wang and Yuan [7] studied the reductive kinetics of the reaction between a natural ilmenite and carbon. At temperature below 1100°C, chemical reaction was the rate controlling step, at 1100 to 1250°C mixed controlling was rate controlling step, above 1250°C diffusion through the product layer controlled the reaction. Zhang [8] investigated the reduction of natural, sintered and preoxidized ilmenite concentrates in hydrogen methane mixtures. Preoxidation and sintering of ilmenite concentrates changed their phase composition and caused a sharp decrease in specific surface area of raw materials and an increase in carburization temperature. Sintering also increased the metallization temperature of iron."

THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin. Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead-antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.

Rates oj decarburization of levilated Fe-C droplets conlaining 5.5 to 0 pct C have been measured at 1660°C. Gas mixtures of 1, 10, and 100 pct 0, with helium diluenl were used at velocities of 12.5 and 62.5 cm per sec. Rates were independent of carbon concentration in the mell and in good agreement with the calculated rule of oxygen diffusion through the gas boundary layer. The effects of flow rale and total pressure are as predicled and the rates are approxitnalely 2.5 times those with CO2 as oxidant. The mass-transfer correlation used incorporaled the efject of natural convection as well as forced conrection. Graphile spheres are shown to oxidize at the same rate as Fe-C droplets under the same experimental codlions. It is concluded that, for high carbon concentrations in the melt, the rate of- decarburizalion is controlled wholly by the rate of gaseous diffusion. Rate measurements with pure CO, are reported for low carbon concentrations where CO bubbles nucleate within the droplet. Under these circumstances the decarburi-zation decreased with carbon concentration and it is proposed that carbon diffusion is significant in conlrolling the decnvburization rate. In an earlier paper1 decarburization rate measurements were reported for levitated Fe-C alloys at 1660°C but with CO2 as the oxidant. The decarburization rate was found to be independent of carbon concentration in the melt but slightly affected by total pressure. The authors were unable to explain the slight pressure effect but in all other respects the results were consistent with control by diffusion in the gas boundary layer. Subsequent work has been directed at finding the reason for the slight pressure effect and whether the kinetics with oxygen as oxidant parallel those with CO2. Recently Ito and Sano2 have shown that with water vapor-argon atmospheres the decarburization rate is gaseous diffusion controlled until an oxide film appears on the surface. In this work the melts were contained in crucibles. MASS TRANSFER IN THE GAS PHASE In the earlier analysis1 only forced-convection mass transfer was considered. Subsequent recognition of the existence of some free-convection mass transfer explained the observed small effect of total pressure on the decarburization rate. Steinberger and Treybal3 and Kinard, Manning, and Manning4 have developed correlations involving the linear addition of the contribution of radial diffusion, free and forced convection. Steinberger and Treybal&apos;s correlation was chosen as the most applicable to the present work since it correlated most of the data available in the literature and handled the low Reynolds number region exceptionally well. The correlation for (Gr&apos;Sc) < 108 is where Nu&apos; is the Nusselt number for mass transfer based upon the total surface of a sphere in an infinite medium, G&apos; is the mean Grashof number for mass transfer defined by Eq. [2], Sc is the Schmidt number (µ/pDAB)f, Re is the sphere Reynolds number (dpu,pf/µf), p is the viscosity of the gas (poise), p is the density of the gas (g cm-3), Dab is the binary diffusivity for the system A-B (sq cm sec-&apos;), dp is the sphere diameter (cm), u is the approach velocity of the gas (cm sec-I), and subscript f denotes the property value is computed at the film temperature Tf defined by Tf = +1/2(To + Tr) where To is the specimen temperature and T, is the approach gas temperature (oK). Natural convection occurs when inhomogeneities exist in gas density. These may be caused by concentration gradients, temperature gradients, or both. In the present work the temperature gradient between the sphere and the bulk gas was very large and in some cases, for example the runs with pure oxygen, the concentration gradient was also appreciable. In today&apos;s fast-track construction environment, owners are searching for non-conventional technologies to build their projects faster and safer while maintaining traffic flow during construction. To that end designers and contractors are providing solutions that incorporate many unique features to expedite construction processes. In addition to timely delivery of the finished highway products, there is an increasing interest in making the initial investment in applying innovative technologies and thereby minimizing costly maintenance of highway projects. Accordingly, the aim of this paper (along with the accompanying paper) is to examine innovative technologies, developed mostly in Europe, that accelerate construction of highway, runway and railway embankment foundations. For each technology, a basic concept, installation technique(s), and design considerations are discussed, along with the case history of a real-world project. The Geotextile Encased Columns (GEC), AuGeo, and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) are presented in Part I. Deep Mixing (DM), Mass stabilization, Cut-Mix-Injection (FMI), and Combined soil Stabilization with Vertical columns (CSV) technologies are discussed in Part II.

"INTRODUCTION The Queen Mary copper property is in sec. 18, T. 12 N., R. 16 W., in the Clinton mining district of Missoula County, Mont. It was examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, November 21, 1943. Upon the basis of his recommendations, a small trenching and diamond-drilling program was begun November 11, 1944. One diamond-drill hole was completed December 16, -944, but because of frozen ground trenching was postponed until June 1945 and then completed. This report describes the results of exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. THIS gold problem is full of complications and can hardly be handled adequately or comprehensively in any short period of time. Perhaps I might begin by mentioning a few aspects of the subject about which I suppose there will be no disagreement. The first of these is that we already have a stock of monetary gold in the United States far in excess of what is needed to support any desirable increase in the present volume of currency and credit. The second is that this already superabundant gold stock is certain to be considerably enlarged during the course of the war, and presumably during the months of readjustment following its conclusion. Some billions of additional gold, we may reasonably presume, will come into the country during these next few years, thus increasing the aggregate monetary gold stock from the present eighteen billions to perhaps twenty- two or even twenty-five billion dollars.

The preparation of a paper read before this Society in 1927 on Undersea Mining led to representations to the Deputy Minister of Mines at Ottawa, Dr. Chas. Camsell, and to the Director of the Geological Survey and the Director of the Mines Branch, which resulted in the undertaking by these bodies of a geological, physical, and chemical survey of the Sydney coalfield, combined with revision of the geological maps, on all of which much progress has been made. Preliminary studies revealed the necessity for a new base-map on a scale that would permit the representation of the whole coalfield from cape Dauphin to Mira bay on one sheet, and in the making of this map the Geodetic and Topographical Surveys have collaborated, with the assistance of airplane surveys for filling-in of detail. The new map will show all the data accumulated by 50 years of active mining and will show also the extent of mine workings, with level-contours under the sea. Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey, has, over a number of seasons, studied in the field the historical geology with the purpose of elucidating the sequence of earth movements that have determined the structure of the coalfields, especially those that have governed the course and extent of the complementary folds that traverse the Sydney coalfield. Dr. B. R. MacKay, of the Survey, and the officers of the Fuel Testing Laboratories at Ottawa have made exhaustive studies of the Phalen seam, chemical and microscopic, intended to elucidate the conditions under which this seam was deposited, and some very interesting conclusions have been reached.

Vanadium ore is widely distributed in black rock series (Fan, Zhang and Ye, 2004) in many provinces of China, which accounts for 87% (Zuo, Peng and Dugang, 2001) of vanadium reserves in China. In Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain, there are large or medium-sized sedimentary deposits such as Zhongcun vanadium deposit, Yinhua vanadium deposit, Qianjiaping vanadium deposit, Xiajiadian gold-vanadium deposit and Lengshuigou vanadium deposit. The vanadium is distributed in other minerals mainly in the form of isomorphic replacement. These types of ore are characterized by no independent vanadium mineral, low grade and vast reserves. Now in China the vanadium extraction technology is backward with low utilization rate of resources. The difficulties of vanadium extraction from black rock series are that the enrichment by means of mechanical beneficiation is difficult; the cost of direct chemical extraction is high and the emission of waste gas from pyrogenic process does not conform to environmental protection standard. Therefore the study of vanadium occurrence, the improvement & optimization of vanadium extraction technology and the realization of pollution-free and low-cost extraction of vanadium from black rock series are of great and realistic importance for environment-friendly exploitation & utilization of vanadium resource in China. The study is based on carbon content in ore of Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain. Two kinds of ore are selected. Vanadium ore with low carbon content (TC<1%) is taken as Sample 1 while vanadium ore with high carbon content (TC>10%) as Sample 2. Based on analysis of ore?s lithologic features and vanadium?s occurrence, a vanadium extraction technological process characterized by selective grinding, low cost and no pollution is proposed.

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. The Bureau of Mines conducted an exploratory field survey to determine the amount of airborne coal dust, the size distribution of the dust, and the rate of dust deposition in coal mine airways. The survey was taken at eight underground locations in operating coal mines. The rate of dust deposition in the airways depended upon the concentration of air-borne dust and decreased exponentially with distance from the dust source. The rate was seemingly independent of the size of the airborne dust particles. The rate of deposition, along a return, for the coal dust from a fade being mined with a continuous mining machine closely matched the rate for the rock dust from a trickle duster. A sample rock-dusting schedule for that return is presented; that is, the trickle duster should be operated for 3-112 hours after every five shifts to protect the average deposit of new float coal dust in the return, but operation after every three shifts is preferred, to protect an occasional heavier deposit.

Fundicion Refimet S.A. has operated a custom copper smelter at La Negra, near Antofagasta in northern Chile since 1993. From an initial operation based on Reverb smelting and Peirce-Smith, converting, the plant was expanded from 90 000 t/y to 160 000 t/y copper production in early 1997, by conversion to oxy-fuel smelting and use of concentrate injection on Converters. As part of this expansion a novel reverb gas cooling and cleaning system was developed and designed by Kilborn SNC-Lavalin Europe, the London, UK-based mining and metals; Office of Canada&apos;s SNC-Lavalin group. The reverb gas cooler needed to satisfy several very specific requirements including low cost, flexibility, robustness and simplicity of operation. Of particular importance was the requirement to cool and clean the ,oxy-fuel reverb gases and render them suitable for subsequent treatment in a conventional sulphuric acid plant. It was also important to avoid accretion or dust handling problems. This paper describes the key design features and subsequent successful installation, commissioning and operation of the unit.

The Chinese have conducted extensive studies concerning the medicinal properties of plant products. In this investigation the ability of three bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to inhibit particle-induced activation of alveolar macrophages was evaluated and this inhibitory potential was correlated with the ability of those drugs to bind to membrane components. Tetrandrine. i.e.. an herbal medicine used as an antifibrotic agent in China, was a potent inhibitor of particle-stimulated oxygen consumption, superoxide release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion by alveolar macrophages. Tetrandrine also exhibited substantial binding affinity for membrane lipids and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, tubocurine, an analogue with little antifibrotic potential, exhibited low binding affinity and had little effect on macrophage activation. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrotic potential, exhibited inhibitory and binding properties similar to those of tetrandrine. The data indicate that a strong relationship exists between the antifibrotic potential of these alkaloids and their ability to bind to alveolar macrophages and inhibit particle-induced activation of these phagocytes. These drugs should serve as useful probes to evaluate the role of alveolar macrophages in pulmonary fibrosis. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.Chronic silicosis is a fibrotic disease resulting from occupational exposure to silica dust. It is manifested initially by an increase in the quantity of pulmonary surfactant (Dethloff et al., 1986). However, in later stages it is characterized by an increase in collagen formation and the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung (Ziskind et al., 1976). Although mechanisms for the progression of silicosis have not yet been completely defined, activation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica particles is believed to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. Studies from our laboratory have shown that both in vitro and in vivo silica exposures result in a stimulation of macrophage release of reactive products capable of damaging the lung parenchyma (Castranova et al., 1990; Goodman et al., 1990). In addition, exposure of al¬veolar macrophages to silica results in the release of fibrogenic factors which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (Leibovich and Ross, 1976; Bitterman et al., 1982, 1983).The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which represent the largest group among the iso-quinoline compounds isolated from the plant kingdom, are known to exhibit a broad rangeof pharmacological activities. Tetrandrine, for example, an alkaloid isolated from the root of Stephania tetrandra, has been tested for its antitumor, antihypertensive, and antisilicotic effects (Kupchan and Atland, 1973; Zeng et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1983). It is currently used in China as a treatment for angina, hypertension, and silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Li et al., 1981). Several related bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as methoxyadiantifoline and tubocurine have also been evaluated for medicinal effects. Methoxyadiantifoline has been shown to exhibit effects on the cardiovascular system similar to those reported for tetrandrine (Jia et al., 1988). However, to date, the antifibrotic activity of methoxyadiantifoline has not been evaluated. In contrast to tetrandrine, tubocurine, a structural analogue of this drug, has been reported to be relatively ineffective against fibrosis (Mo et al., 1982)."

The main objective of the blasting phase in a coal mining operation is to maximise the coal recovery. However, coal loss due to blasting is a serious problem. The Australian Coal Association Research Programme (ACARP) reported in 2011 that in Australia one in every ten coal mines is completely wasted due to such losses. Coal is either lost in the spoil, largely due to the blasting operation or becomes diluted and cannot be recovered entirely. The major coal loss mechanisms include losses from the coal seam roof, the floor, the front edge and from dilution. Coal damage and loss mechanisms during cast blasting that have been observed by various authors include: •Excessive cast dragging the coal edge in the cast direction. Movements of this nature are oftenassociated with the formation of trenches. •Spatial movement of overburden where rock shears and moves in a plane above the coal seam,which damages and dilutes the coal. •Rock falling over the coal during the blast often producing indentations in the exposed coal. •The inappropriate use of bulk and initiating explosives that often results in coal damage. •Insufficient stand-off distances from the coal. The Australian coal mining industry has gone a long way towards addressing the coal loss issues since 2011: almost all operations now deploy touch-coal drilling and sporadically use gamma logging for loading overburden. A study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of touch-coal information in which some touch-coal blastholes were drilled on a fixed or random pattern. In another study, some blastholes were drilled to the touch-coal, gamma-logged and mapped to determine stand-off distances. It was found that the coal roof surface created by gamma-logged holes was the most effective option for minimising coal loss. As a result, a variable stand-off distance was found to be the key to minimising losses. This paper discusses the importance of coal mapping, the rock properties of the roof and floor interface of the coal seam, and the significance of loading and initiating designs in minimising coal damage. Furthermore, the importance of using electronic initiators cannot be emphasised enough. This paper also discusses how a cast blast can be initiated from many locations by mitigating geological abnormalities and thereby avoiding spatial movement of rock shearing in a plane above the coal seam.

Large deposits of natural zeolites may provide cost-effective alternatives for treatment of soil and water contaminated ) with heavy metals and radionuclides. Research on the Bikini atoll demonstrated that addition of clinoptilolite to the soil significantly reduces cesium uptake by plants. Re- search on the potential use of zeolites in soils at Bunker Hill, ID indicated only minor benefits at very high contamination levels vs. US Bureau of Mines (USBM) work on the use of zeolites for treatment of mine waste waters emphasized problems with natural waters that previous studies have not addressed. High levels of competing calcium in natural waters significantly decrease the effectiveness of zeolites for heavy metal sorption and may limit the usefulness in these applications.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 50 kilometres south of Charters Towers and 134km south-west of Townsville. The resource was discovered in 1983 and first open pit gold production began in 1986. The mine traditionally employed a bottom-up sequence – a combination of modified and traditional Avoca methods with run-of-mine waste backfill. This practice caused many high-grade crown pillars to be left in place, yet accessible. In recent years, these crown pillars have been extracted by injection grouting of rockfill. This process facilitated blind up-hole open stoping. To date, thirteen separate injection campaigns have been completed, of which ten were deemed successful. In general, the two key technical difficulties in this mining technique are: maintaining a consistent high-quality ground consolidation of the rock fill material; and controlling the drill and blast practices during stoping. Here, effective drill-and-blast control was found to be essential to achieve the dual aims of 100% extraction, and maximum sill pillar stability to minimise dilution. During stoping, the technical performance of the consolidated rock-fill was recorded; both to verify the design, and to identify operational improvements. The results showed that Pajingo has realised both reduced production down-time through use of early strength gain grout, and more rapid and thorough grout consolidation through changes to the emplacement method. The optimisation of consolidated rock fill has led to several quantifiable benefits to the mine, including: profitable extraction of previously sterilised crown pillars resulting in both increased ore reserves and production profile; improvements to the stability of grouted stope crowns, thereby reducing safety and production related; risks associated with open up-hole stopes; reduction in cost and time constraints, with respect to the grouting of loose fill; and reduction in grout curing time – from 14 days to 8 days – thereby minimising production down-time. This paper is a case study of the evolution and optimisation of the up-hole open stoping mining method at Pajingo. The challenges and successes are discussed in terms of their key mining outcomes.
