As part of an on-going effort to improve water quality and reduce discharge into Boston Harbor, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) East Boston Branch Sewer Relief Project was designed under a Federal mandate from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to upgrade the aging sewer system, increase system storage and greatly reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows into the Harbor. The project scope of work includes the installation of over 2 miles (11,800 linear feet) of 36-inch and 66-inch diameter sewer relief piping, twenty (20) temporary shafts and an approximate 100 foot open cut section, located within the densely populated neighborhood of East Boston, Massachusetts. This area is a former marshland backfilled in the early to mid 1800?s where busy commercial streets co-mingle with thickly settled residential houses. The subsurface conditions present within Boston?s complex geology include the presence of subsurface contamination as well as complex networks of underground utilities. Additional site limitations included low headroom, noise, and traffic restrictions. Together these limitations required the design of individual earth support systems, tailored for each shaft location. Moreover, challenging subsurface conditions identified during construction required design modifications to minimize cost and schedule impacts related to construction dewatering, treatment of contaminated groundwater, internal bracing, and utility relocations. This paper provides a case history of the Geo-structural design and performance of various earth support techniques utilized to construct jacking and receiving shafts designed to launch and receive two (2) micro-tunnel boring machines (MTBM) and to support the construction of new deep shaft structures in an urban coastal area.

In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.

"The StackCell was developed to overcome the engineering and design challenges that are commonly associated with existing flotation technology such as pneumatic, self-aspirating cells, mechanical cells, and flotation columns. These challenges include high energy consumption, large floorspace requirements, and size. They are most evident when designing systems to process streams containing a high volumetric flow rate coupled with a significant float yield. Unlike many metalliferous and industrial mineral applications, fine coal flotation circuits are typically characterized by feed streams containing a low solids content (<5%, by weight) where up to 85% of the feed can report to the product launder. With input from major engineering houses and end-users, the Eriez Flotation Division (EFD) developed the StackCell technology with the goal of providing an additional flotation option for end-users. This technology was designed specifically to overcome these challenges by providing an efficient method of separation in terms of metallurgy, but also with respect to equipment size, energy consumption, and installed costs. Besides being placed in tandem with existing cells to provide cost-effective supplemental capacity, this technology can be installed in a stand-alone arrangement as recently demonstrated at Patriot Coal’s Kanawha Eagle preparation plant. This manuscript provides an understanding of the underlying fundamentals of this new technology and presents data from Kanawha Eagle in addition to other industrialscale installations.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, column flotation has continued to gain acceptance as an alternative method for recovering fine coal due to superior metallurgical performance as compared to mechanical flotation cells. This point has been proven on numerous occasions by comparison of plant flotation data with the release analysis separation curve (Dell et al., 1972). Data from a release analysis test approximates the ultimate flotation response of a coal sample. In North America, a number of investigations have been published that document bottom-line improvements achieved using column cells (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004; Baumgarth et al., 2005). According to these reports, the benefits are derived from an overall increase in plant yield that can be achieved due to the improved product grade in the flotation circuit. In particular, the application of wash water to a deep froth utilized in column flotation minimizes the nonselective recovery of high-ash ultrafines that are hydraulically entrained in the froth by conventional flotation machines."

Currently raw brown coal is fired in the Latrotx; &apos;ahcc th,iki~, Lanying with it two major penalties, (a) boiler efficiency of 65 - 70 per cent (in terms of GCV), (b) much higher boiler cost than for black coal. Drying the coal, in energy-efficient, and cost-efficient manner, opens the way to efficiencies of order 88 per cent and enables the lower cost black coal type boilers to be used. With the higher boiler efficiency goes much higher combustion temperatures and the effect of this on radiative heat transfer is a major factor in reducing boiler cost. In a fluidised-bed combustor the temperature is controlled to 800C - 900C. In a pulverised fuel combustor higher temperatures are however achieved and can increase boiler fouling due to the salt content of the coal. This is a problem which needs to be solved. Victoria has the prospect of lifting efficiency from 28/29 per cent to 35 per cent, of reducing carbon dioxide output correspondingly and reducing cost of power stations. So far as gasification is concerned, efficient removal of liquid water from the coal is important to the overall efficiency.

Before discussing minicomputer software for the mineral industry, it is helpful to explain some of the computer program terminology. Most of the terms are the same as those applied to large computers. A computer system consists of a machine (hardware) with electronic and mechanical components and instructions (software) that define its operational logic and sequence. This logic is described by sets of commands grouped into programs. Each program has specific objectives related to the computer&apos;s operation and to production information from computer data that are input and processed. Software, therefore, is a general term applied to any type of computer program. Instructions to the computer are communicated through languages that convert logical and arithmetic statements into machine operations. The languages may consist of statements resembling mathematical or logical phrases understandable by humans, or they may be coded statements with no apparent resemblance to spoken language but readily understandable by the computer. Computers also translate higher level languages such as FORTRAN or COBOL into machine languages using other programs called Compilers. Programs written in these higher level languages are generally called source code. However, programs written in computer assembly language may also be called source code. The compiled version of the program after it has been translated by the compiler software is called object code. Programs used to "instruct computers how to be computers" are generally called systems software. They relate more to computer operation than to producing externally usable results. Programs producing information for many users-engineers, accountants, managers-are termed applications software. For the most part, applications software is the principal concern of the mineral industry. Programs are developed to fit user requirements as interpreted by programmers. Programs vary in quality, precision, efficiency, accuracy, and complexity, depending on programmer skills and abilities and programming decisions forcing design tradeoffs. A well written program should have speed, efficient use of available hardware resources, accuracy, and an inherently logical structure that aids documentation and subsequent modifications. Programs developed to fit specific requirements are termed customized software. A program organized and prepared for general commercial use is called a package, or a software package, and includes documentation for program use. A form of customized software that takes an existing program or package as its starting point and modifies it is called a customized package. A minicomputer program can be stored on computer cards, standard magnetic tape, magnetic cassette tape, floppy disk, or hard disk. The software purchaser or lessee may select one or more of these media when specifying a program in a software contract. Supporting documentation may include a listing of the program instructions linkages, hardware and storage resource requiremnents, flow charts, and programmer and user manuals. The purchaser must carefully make and clearly understand specifications for media and format of program delivery. This assures that delivered software is compatible with the intended hardware. Mineral Industry Attitudes Toward Computer Software The mining industry has traditionally been conservative concerning computer applications. Furthermore, large computer costs have made these systems accessible only to large companies, for the most part. But in the past few years, mining software systems developed at schools such as Pennsylvania State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute have gained wider acceptance in the mineral industry. More mining engineers now have academic training in computer application, and computer use is now more acceptable to the mining industry. Mining managers in decisionmaking positions are faced with a new generation of computer technology resulting from the rapid evolution of minicomputers. Not too long ago, manufacturers such as Digital Equipment Corp., Data General, and Hewlett-Packard were considered newcomers. They are now established companies. In addition, Apple, Radio Shack, Commodore, and others have emerged in the growing microcomputer industry. So the mine manager or mining executive now has more options. Mining Software is Limited Along with the rapid evolution in hardware development, much general purpose software is now being developed for minicomputers. The 1981 Apple Software Directory can be obtained for about $14; Radio Shack published the Application Software Source Book in three volumes for $1.95 each. Brochures describing software can be obtained for other minicomputer manufacturers by contacting local sales representatives. Hewlett-Packard software can be obtained and exchanged through HP user&apos;s groups. Manufacturers&apos; programming staffs are generally concerned with developing applications software. In some instances, manufacturers will recommend software developed by their hardware users. Until now, however, software development for mining applications has been minimal. This should not be surprising, since software development traditionally lags hardware development by several years. Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau&apos;s seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau. INTRODUCTION The two basic types of mine-air compressors are the positive-displacement compressors and the dynamic compressors. Positive-displacement compressors con¬fine successive volumes of air within a closed space and increase the pressure by reducing the volume of that space. Reciprocating and rotary compressors operate on this principle. Dynamic compressors utilize an impeller to acceler¬ate the air, with the increased air velocity converted to pressure through a stationary diffuser. Centrifugal compressors and turbocompressors operate on this principle. Reciprocating Compressors Reciprocating compressors include both single-stage and multistage units. For mine service the most com¬mon is the two-stage intercooled compressor having an atmospheric pressure intake and a discharge pressure of 689 to 861 kPa (100 to 125 psi). The cylinders of a reciprocating compressor may be either single acting or double acting. In the single-acting cylinder, compression occurs on only one side of the piston, while, in double¬acting cylinders, compression occurs on both sides of the piston. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a typical two-stage double-acting water-cooled reciprocat¬ing compressor. Fig. 2 illustrates the sequence of opera¬tions occurring in the cylinder of a reciprocating com¬pressor. Most modern mine compressors are double acting and are driven by electric motors. Induction motors are used on low-powered compressors, and synchronous motors are used on larger compressors. Steam-driven compressors once were common and still are applied where a reliable source of low-cost steam is available. For this type of compressor, steam is a desirable power source since a governor that senses the discharge pres¬sure can be used to control the steam inlet. This can be used to regulate the compressor speed to compress only air sufficient to meet the mine&apos;s requirements (up to the capacity of the unit). Unlike a constant-speed electric¬driven compressor, no other regulation is required for the cylinders of a steam-driven unit. Rotary Compressors Rotary compressors include sliding-vane, liquid¬piston, two-impeller straight-lobe or cycloidal, and helical-lobe units. Each of these has specific advantages and applications. Of these, the helical-lobe or "screw" compressor has the greatest application for supplying "100-lb air" [689 kPa (100 psi) ] to small- and medium¬size underground mines. Fig. 3 illustrates the operation of a sliding-vane compressor. Fig. 4 illustrates the operation of a helical lobe or screw compressor. Fig. 5 illustrates the operation of a two-impeller straight-lobe compressor. Fig. 6 illustrates the operation of a liquid¬piston compressor. Centrifugal Compressors Centrifugal compressors deliver 0.94 m3/s (2000 cfm) or more of air, and they are best suited to supply¬ing large volumes of compressed air for base loads. The efficiency of a centrifugal compressor declines rapidly when its operation deviates from its design point. If the power cost is not a critical consideration, a centrif¬ugal compressor is attractive as a result of the low initial and installation costs and the high degree of reliability. Fig. 7 illustrates a typical four-stage centrif¬ugal compressor, and Fig. 8 is a cross section of this type of unit. COMPRESSOR SELECTION The process of selecting a compressor requires sev¬eral considerations, including the capacity, the control system, the location, the power supply, and the cooling provisions. Compressor Capacity To determine the required capacity, the total air quantity and pressure requirements must be calculated. The air consumption of various tools, as listed in Table 1, must be included in this calculation. Some of the other considerations include: 1) The correction factor for altitude, as listed in Table 2, must be included in the calculation. While pneumatic tools require additional compressed air as the altitude increases, the compressor produces less. 2) A correction factor must be incorporated for the use of multiple tools. Table 3 lists appropriate correc¬tion factors for rock drills.

This paper demonstrates the use of Clean TeQ Water’s ATA® rapid dewatering technology as an alternative approach to the tailings paddock buttressing method which is currently being implemented. ATA® is a three-component system where the tailings stream is separated into fines and coarse fractions utilising a hydro-cyclone. The results from the pilot demonstrated that the use of ATA® offers significant advantages, including higher homogeneity in the buttress, higher permeability, and faster settling rates.

SOME years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.1 The life of dies was considered in relation to the casting temperature, the material used for the die, and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mech-anism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines.

Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. THE program of government drilling, conducted jointly by the U. S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, has demonstrated the presence in Texas and New Mexico of potash-bearing beds of considerable importance. Information regarding the ex- tent and location of the potash deposits as presented at the non-metallic sessions was of great interest to many engineers. These subjects will be covered in greater detail in later paragraphs. The first session, with about 50 in attendance, convened at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18, with Oliver Bowles, chair- man of the Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals, pre- siding. The first paper was on "Soapstone Mining In Virginia," presented by C. W. Ryan of Lynchburg, Va. The nature and extent of the soapstone deposits of Nelson County were described in some detail. In origin, the soapstone is undoubtedly related to a basic peridotite rock though its mode of formation is some- what uncertain. This main soapstone deposit occurs in three veins, the western, middle, and eastern, the middle vein being of greatest economic importance. Methods of stripping, quarrying and milling the rock were described and the uses of soapstone were enum- erated. In discussing this paper, C. P. Berkey, of Co- lumbia University strongly favored the theory of igneous origin of the soapstone and the need for further detailed geological study. J. L. Gillson of Cambridge, Mass., stated that the Vermont and New York talc deposits were always associated with characteristic minerals, such as, a chlorite of one particular variety, siderite, amphibole, magnetite, and biotite. C. H. Behre of Cincinnati, Ohio, raised the question of parallelism in the soapstone structure and Mr. Ryan stated that such parallelism was in evidence in some parts of the deposits. H. A. Wheeler of St. Louis, Mo., also took &apos;part in the discussion.

Seven pyrite samples purified from coal sources and one ore source pyrite (for comparative purposes) have been characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses, inherent floatability, apparent specific gravity, surface area, semiconductor type, optical anisotropy, dissolution and oxidation rate. The data clearly demonstrate that pyrites from various coal sources differ not only from ore pyrite but from each other as well.

"MANGOTE Surface oxidizied mine is a gold-bearing deposit in Congo's Mai-Ndombe Province. In the past decades, the ore has been exploited in a crude way by local farmers, which directly causes the severe processing difficulty and lack of economy of cyanide leaching. Hunan Research Institute for Non-ferrous metals (HRIM) is currently investigating options to recover gold through understanding the mineralogical characteristics of MANGOTE surface oxidized ore. Chemical analysis , X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy (QEMSCAN ) were conducted on samples from mine site. The bulk analysis results showed that gold separation of gold from gangue minerals was feasible after grinding the ore samples to 86.53% -74µm and adjusting the pulp specific weight at 100g/L, and gravity separation was conducted with using spiral chute after grading of fine particles. The research results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of abandoned ore and economy of comprehensive utilization that might be directive experience to similar cases. The occurrence of gold in the ore refers to the form of gold in the ore.Generally the existing state of gold can be divided into four major categories according to the viewpoint of the dispersion system: independent minerals and gold, a coarse dispersed system;colloidal gold, a colloidal dispersion; solid solution gold, is atomic ion dispersion; adsorptive gold, according to the adsorbed particle is the micelle or ion, respectively is a colloidal dispersion or ion dispersion(Mao, S. D., & Yang, R. S. 2009; Liu, J. J. et al. 2007; Horisberger, M., & Rosset, J. 1977; Li, Y., & Audétat, A. 2013).With the increasing technology of comprehensive utilization of resources,varied plants can now process different gold ores with various occurrence states(Neesse, T. 2014; 7. "The adoption of a significant pile testing regime, the use of Eurocode 7 as the design standard, the development of lean construction techniques, and lateral thinking in overcoming some considerable construction challenges allowed Stent Foundations to construct the foundations for the new Wembley Stadium, London, on time and within budget. In addition to the piling works for the main stadium, and after significant design development, a large number of extra piles were required to raise the new iconic roof Arch to its final position some 133 metres above the ground. A 1,400m long contiguous bored pile wall was also constructed to allow for excavation and formation of the new pitch. As long ago as the 1880's, Wembley Park leisure grounds had football pitches and running tracks.In 1918 the British Government began planning a British Empire Exhibition with a stadium as its centrepiece. The Exhibition area covered 219 acres and the area on which a former abandoned tower called Watkins Folly had stood was chosen as the site for the new stadium (http://www.wembleystadium.com).The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known, was designed by architects Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayerton and the engineer Sir Owen Williams. It took just 300 days to complete at a cost of £750,000 ($1.4m), and was built using 25,000 tons of ferro concrete, 1,000 tons of steel, and over half a million rivets.The Empire Exhibition was a remarkable event, containing fountains, lakes, gardens, and many pavilions, each representing the architectural style of the countries exhibiting. It was opened on 23rd April 1924 and the final attendance was over 27 million, with 4.5 million admissions to the Empire Stadium alone."

Conservation is served by a constant search for higher efficiencies in mining, preparation, and use. Increased utilization is sought through various projects that probe new ways to use coal and expand existing coal markets. This report, the twenty-eighth in the series,3 gives the highlights of Bureau of Mines coal research and technologic work in 1963. The scope and complexity of the program makes it virtually impossible to report all progress on every project, even tor a 12-month period. Full insight into each project can be gained only through intensive review of basic objectives, past accomplishments, and current status of the work. Details of the work are given in numerous publications issued by the Bureau and its laboratories and centers located throughout the country.

The testing procedures of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration specify that intrinsic safety acceptance tests be conducted using a standard tungsten-cadmium electrode configuration in the break- flash apparatus. However, in realistic mining environments, other materials may be more likely sources of sparking. Information defining the probability of spark ignition between common materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, lead, tin, cold-rolled steel, and stainless steel is of more practical value in determining ignition hazards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the influence of material on the ignition probability using the breakflash apparatus. By comparing ignition currents or ignition voltages corresponding to a probability of one ignition per thousand sparks to those found previously for cadmium, a margin of safety may be estimated for each material. This report presents the results of an investigation into the influence of disk electrode material on the probability of ignition.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). Some technologies can monitor vehicle operators for indicators of wakefulness, such as percent eyelid"
