The mining industry is quite often faced with declining selling prices for its products in the face of rising prices for the input cost resources that it uses. Blasting is a key activity within the mining system and has a vital role to play within the Mine to MillTM concept. It is therefore important that blasting makes a positive contribution to mine profit and productivity. There are several variables involved in considering the profitability and productivity of blasting. The rock types and structures, the bench height, the blast hole drill rig specifications, hole diameter, spacing and burden, explosive loading and initiation and blast size fragmentation. Productivity accounting is a methodology which is used elsewhere to give additional insights into the productivity and pricing factors that drive the financial performance of a business. Miners know intuitively that productivity and pricing influence costs and profit, but only with productivity accounting can the dollars involved be calculated. Drilling and blasting are part of a chain of unit operations in a mine. For an owner-miner, drilling and blasting would be considered as cost centres and a productivity accounting cost model approach would be relevant. On the other hand a contractor is likely to consider drilling and blasting as a profit centre, in which case a productivity accounting profit model approach would be appropriate. Both of these will be explained. The paper provides a basic outline of deterministic productivity accounting and demonstrates its application to blasting. Drilling and blasting data from a mine was obtained for a two-month period. The change in productivity and prices was calculated to obtain the dollar contributions from them towards the change in cost. It was determined that although there had been productivity dollar gains these were offset by larger pricing dollar losses, the net effect being that total drilling and blasting costs increased. The productivity accounting analysis gives the facts and the mine is in a position to establish priorities based on knowing the dollar contributions of each input used.

"A heat pipe is a device having a very high effective thermal conductivity in which two-phase flow and heat transfer takes place. Recent research at McGill University has led to a new type of heat pipe that contains a flow modifier. This improvement has enabled the device to operate at the high heat fluxes encountered in the metallurgical industry.This paper summarizes the progress made to describe the fluid flow in the evaporator section of a McGill heat pipe with the goal of understanding how the flow modifier configuration is linked to the film boiling and dry-out limitations. A separated flow model, an instability analysis, a lift-off model and an energy balance model are used to calculate the theoretical CHF with varying flow modifier configurations and operation conditions. A summary of the current work to relate the flow modifier to the dry-out limitation is also given.Determining how the flow modifier affects both the film boiling and dry-out limitation will give insight into improving the flow modifier design so as to extend the operational range of McGill heat pipes in terms of maximum heat flux and heat load capabilities.IntroductionThe McGill heat pipe is a specialized two-phase heat exchanger developed for several metallurgical applications where temperatures and heat fluxes are typically close to or beyond the maximum safe range of conventional cooling technology.Over the last few years, several breakthroughs have brought this device beyond the proof-of concept stage and a series of industrial trials have been performed with success. Alkaline sulfide leaching technology (i.e. ASL) has been studied, presented and published throughout the literature and utilized in some current engineering studies. Yet, the actual industrial applications are very few and the knowledge about these is very limited. Hence, a large gap between the laboratory, publications, engineering studies, and the actual industrial plant exists. Recent studies of ASL applied to copper enargite concentrates definitively bear out this dichotomy. Hence, this paper will seek to dispel the common misperceptions that continue to surround the selective industrial ASL hydrometallurgical technology. For edification of the reader, a listing of ten common misconceptions and myths is listed. As well, ASL history, fundamental aspects and a new flowsheet application for simultaneous gold and high purity antimony oxide production from low grade materials is included. The associated estimated economic considerations are also included to heighten enlightenment about the application of this industrially proven technology.

A Central Termelétrica SOL, ou CTEs 5 e 6, foi construída com o objetivo de fazer o aproveitamento da energia do gás oriundo do processo de coqueificação do carvão mineral realizado em fornos específicos para este fim, em um processo denominado “Coqueria Heat Recovery”. Nesta unidade operacional de responsabilidade da área de energia da ArcelorMittal Tubarão, seguindo o plano plurianual de manutenção nas turbinas Fuji, foi realizado intervenção de manutenção nos dois turbo gerados CTE’s 05 e 06 no ano de 2015. Durante as atividade de inspeção de manutenção foi detectado que existiam trincas nos pés das palhetas encaixadas no rotor da turbina nº6. A partir desta constatação, o equipamento ficou sem confiabilidade para operação continua, precisando de substituição das palhetas danificadas. O trabalho proposto apresenta as alternativas possíveis até a solução definitiva que foi a substituição das palhetas defeituosas por novos spare parts. As possibilidades descritas a seguir, serão o objeto de tomada de decisão até a normalização do equipamento: i) Montar TG e operar com palhetas do ultimo estágio trincadas até a chegada do sobressalentes para troca; ii) Deixar equipamento parado aguardando chegada dos sobressalentes para troca e conclusão da montagem e testes; iii) Remover por usinagem de campo, o ultimo estágio de palhetas do rotor montagem e operação do TG6 até a chegada do sobressalentes vindos da Fuji Japão.

The effect of microstructure on the deformation and fracture properties of 3CR12 steel was investigated at different strain rates in the temperature range -196 to 200°C. The yield stress of the as-received steel, showing a banded dual-phase microstructure, was much lower than that of the flake-like dual-phase microstructure produced by heat treatment. The heat treatment also resulted in an increase in the volume fraction of martensite. The fracture toughness of the as-received 3CR12, on the other hand, was significantly higher than that of the heat-treated material. These changes in both yield stress and fracture toughness were attributed to the effect of microstructural parameters on the constraints imposed on the deformation and subsequent failure of the ferritic phase in the as received and heat-treated steels. The exceptionally low resistance to crack extension in a plane parallel to the roiling plane of the as-received material was ascribed to the delamination process, which is typical for controlled-rolled steels. The yield stress and fracture toughness were found to depend on temperature and strain rate. The appearances of the fracture surfaces were found to be consistent with the mechanical properties.

The Copper Canyon lead-zinc mine is in the Battle Mountain. District, Lander County, Nev. It was discovered in 1866 and mined for copper until 1935 and for copper and gold until l948, when the main production became lead-zinc ore. The rocks in the area are carboniferous (Pennsylvanian and Mississippian) sedimentaries that have been intruded by quartz monzonite of Mesozoic age. They have been intensely folded, faulted, and tilted. Lead-zinc ore occurs as sulfides disseminated along fractured zones in a conglomerate arid hornfels. Development was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, making maps and. cross sections, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling from underground. Eighteen holes were drilled, for a total of 2,594 feet. This report contains a brief history of the property and a description of mining methods and beneficiation of the ore, geology, ore deposits and drilling done by the Bureau of Mines. It also contains detailed analyses of the ore samples taken and logs of the holes drilled.

Four samples of manganese-bearing material from the Aroostook County, Maine, deposits were tested at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., to determine their amenability to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods. The samples represented material from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit, the Dudley farm, and the Burnham farm and contained 11 to 14 percent manganese. None of the tests produced appreciably enriched concentrates suitable for further treatment for the production of ferromanganese. The intimate association of the manganese minerals with iron and siliceous minerals requires extremely fine grinding to liberate the manganese minerals in these ores and prevents efficient concentration by physical means.

The amount of copper flash smelting slag has increased during the recent years along with an increasing slag-to-metal ratio. During slag tapping, some copper sulfide is mechanically entrained. As a result, it is necessary to recover copper matte from the slag by suitable methods. At present, the most common way is slow, controlled cooling in a transfer ladle. However, research on the detailed effects of slow cooling and the function of slag modification is rare. This paper described experiments that were performed at different cooling rates (0.5, 1.5, 3, and 7 °C/min), with and without additive. A detailed characterization of the copper-rich phase and its particle size was subsequentlymade using SEM-EDSmicrographs and image analysis software.With a decrease in cooling rate, the particle size of the copper-rich matte phase became larger. The addition of gypsum and carbon as a slag modifier affected the size of the copper-rich phase slightly, and its chemical composition was modified compared with the experiments without additive.

AEBT has been available for a couple of years and is successfully applied in Australia. Up to now it was mainly used in coal surface mining at the Australian East- Coast. Presently, the proved results reach ~ 50 % reduction of Drilling & Blasting costs and a productivity increase of between 10 and 20 %. In 2003 it was for the first time used in surface metal-mining. The mine features for the time being an extremely difficult geological environment and had above to be carried out in the transition level waste/ore. Reductions of wall control, powder factor and vibrations were the main target.

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. The basic mining law of Cuba is contained in the basic Spanish mining decree having the effect of law December 29 , 1868. This legislation has remained substantially unchanged , with the exception of a few minor administrative changes made by the present Government . These changes provide for the register of mines , oil wells , and operations of such nature , and also provide for the keeping of records showing the value of minerals taken out . By Royal decree of April 17 , 1883 , the law of mines enacted for the Peninsula ( Spain ) on July 6 , 1859 , and the General Bases of December 29 , 1868 , were declared in force in Cuba . In order to encourage the mining of iron org , in 1883 the Crow of Spain issued a royal decree to the following effect.

In line with DML Resources continual forward management policies, the Roscommon Quarry operation has recently installed and commissioned a Nordberg 7 ft Symons cone crusher and a HP 300 cone crusher. Both machines have enhanced the production capabilities and quality control of the Roscommon comminuition circuit and they will provide efficient and reliable crushing well into the next century.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The performance was also compared in terms of mill orientation. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1*10−3 to 5*10−3 Nm at 750 and 1500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value. Additionally, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to compare mill orientation (vertical vs. horizontal) for the same mill and under the same test conditions.

Transient electrical noise events pose serious problems for data acquisition systems used in monitoring acoustic emissions in laboratory and field environments. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed a trigger discriminator circuit for use in ultrasonic acoustic emission studies. Designed for use with signals in the frequency range of 50 to 400 kHz, the instrument examines .incoming signals for frequency content, amplitude, simultaneity, threshold crossings, and number of channels above threshold. If preselected criteria on these properties are met, a plus 5-V pulse is output that may be used to trigger a data acquisition system, allowing rejection of noise events that do not possess useful information. The system was designed for four input channels, but may be expanded to more channels with minimal design changes.

Molycorp identifies rare-earth-dependent technologies as those that cannot be produced without rare earth materials. The list of these technologies is long and growing. It encompasses everything from personal electronics and batteries for hybrid cars to permanent magnet generator wind turbines and national defense applications.

Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines began a five-year study of the 7.0 million acre Ketchikan Mining District during 1990. This study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. The study area was subdivided and then prioritized by mineral potential into work units. Bureau field work in 1990 focused on the southern portion of Prince of Wales Island and vicinity. Extensive mineral resources have been mined historically in the area and are presently being evaluated by private industry. Information in this report is based on an extensive literature search and Bureau field work. Over 150 mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences were visited in 1990; an aggregate of 1,300 rock, placer, and limestone samples were taken; and nearly 3 miles of underground workings were mapped. Many prospects, some untouched for more than 80 years, were mapped and sampled. High metal values at several prospects were confirmed by Bureau sampling. Reconnaissance sampling along logging roads on Southern Prince of Wales Island revealed mineralized areas not previously recorded. Follow-up work at many locations is planned for the 1991 season.

The main aim of this work is to evaluate whole-body vibration (WBV) of dozer operators based on three sitting postures (i.e., with 15° lean forward inclination posture, vertically erect posture with no inclination, and with 15° lean backward inclination posture) in Indian surface coal mines. A seat pad tri-axial accelerometer was used to collect WBV data from six dozer operators for three different sitting postures. Results showed that except for Dozer-1, 2, 4, and 5 operators during lean forward sitting posture and Dozer-4 operator during vertical erected posture, no other dozer operators have exceeded an exposure limit value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 in any of the considered sitting postures. Similarly, the vibration dose value (VDV) based on exposure action value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75 has surpassed for all the dozers. But no dozer operator has exceeded an exposure limit value of 21 m/s1.75. The outcome of the study infers that based on “above health guidance caution zone (HGCZ)” for daily vibration exposure, i.e., A(8) measurements, for the operator sitting in lean backward postures the vibration amplification was reduced by 32.89% less compared with lean forward posture and 16.23% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Similarly, based on VDV(8), the exposure to vibration for the lean backward posture was reduced by 33.34% when compared with lean forward posture and 17.11% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Based on the above observation, it is concluded that lean back inclination with a trunk flexion of 15° is a favorable sitting posture, as it exposes the dozer operators to minimum vibration.

Introduction The mine at Copper Mountain of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company was one of the pioneers in the use of blast-hole diamond drilling for ore breakage. This method of mining has now been brought to a high degree of perfection. The system in use has?been described in a previously published paper which has become an important part of the literature o the blast-hole drilling method. At the time of the establishment of the system at Copper Mountain, standardized loading and drilling procedures were set up. These procedures were based partly on the results of experiment and partly upon the judgment of men experienced in breaking rock in the mine. The success of the method has been proof of their adequacy. With the progress of scoping in the mine, the diamond drill method of breaking was applied to other ore blocks where different conditions obtained. It was found necessary to make adjustments in the standard procedures to get the best results under the new conditions. The following paper attempts to express, in terms of mathematics, the relations of the variable factors. Until recently, estimations of drilling required were based upon the tonnage to be broken and the proposed rate of explosive loading. A revised method of estimating is outlined below which is direct and which involves no unrelated variable factors.
