"For over 50 years the JKMRC has applied a unique education-based research strategy to develop modelling and simulation tools that are "fit for purpose" for industrial application. These tools are widely used for the analysis and optimisation of mining and mineral processing systems. As the mining industry context evolves to deal with declining head grades, falling commodity prices, professional skill shortages, and an exponential growth in the volume of data, a re-evaluation of what "fit for purpose" means in the future is required. It is contended that future industry needs for simulation-based decision support requires tools and systems that incorporate: • Multi-component modelling, • Models of complex sensor behaviour, • Integration across the physical value-chain e.g. resource to market, • Financial analysis including risk and uncertainty assessment, • Enabling multi-criterion decision making (technical, financial and environmental), • Ore-body knowledge at multiple scales, • The use of fundamental numerical models to provide insight for the development of practically useful models, and • Decision support delivered through remote operations centres. JKMRC and CRC-ORE are collaborating to develop a next-generation simulation-based decision support system that assists in addressing these challenges. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) combines many years of pragmatic and successful work integrated with modern technology trends - in particular the rapid move to cloud-based computing."

This report presents is an evaluation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the effect of clay-water, brine, and oil-base drilling fluids on the productivity of test wells drilled on the Umiat anticline in U.S. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska. Eleven, wells were drilled on the Umiat structure as part of the U.S. Navy's extensive exploration of the Reserve during 1944-53 to determine the possibilities for oil production. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the exploration program and has published a comprehensive report3/ on the geology of the area and case histories of the wells. The re¬port also includes the results of special studies by the Bureau in connection with the drilling and coring of well 9 with oil-base mud in hole and was the source of much of the information used in preparing this publication. Of the eleven wells, four were drilled with rotary tools and water-base mud (one of the water-base muds was an oil-in-water emulsion mud), five were drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole, one was drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole and later reamed with rotary tools and crude oil, and one was drilled with rotary tools and oil-base mud. Although all of the wells penetrated sandstones that contained oil and gas, some were productive and others were not. The latter two wells, one completed with crude oil in the hole (with some added brine) and the other with oil-base mud, had the greatest productive capacities. The wells drilled with cable tools and brine in the hole had lower productive capacities. In contrast, two of three wells completed with rotary methods and fresh-water drilling mud and the well com¬pleted with rotary and emulsion mud were unproductive.

“Plutonic-related” gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As-(Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton and have been used successfully in exploration. Results from a variety of analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations, e.g. gold and bismuth have linked metallogenesis at high temperatures and thus are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain sub-microscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulphide minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically, by oxidative processes such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pre-treatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulphides to elemental sulphur, sulphur dioxide gas or sulphate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as down stream operating costs. Iron sulphide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution that is generated from oxidation of the sulphides. This liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulphide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulphate, but this is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulphate, which then hydrolyzes and re-precipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200OC) the formation of hematite is favoured. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200OC), the formation of basic iron sulphate is favoured. If the ore or the leach solution contain significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favoured. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulphate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulphates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulphate; the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant, and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

The atmosphere in part of an air-sealed coal mine was monitored continuously through a drill hole for oxygen content to determine the effectiveness of sealing a mine against the entrance of air and the major force that caused the phenomenon of mine breathing through the overburden. The differential pressure across the seal and the barometric pressure on the outside also were recorded. A general correlation, obtained between the oxygen level, differential pressure, and barometric pressure, indicates that changes in air pressure are the cause for periodic replenishment of the oxygen in the mine. Mine effluent quality was determined by conditions in many sections of the mine and could not be related to the oxygen level at the drill hole.

LARGE part of the mining industry is still under the shadow of the depression, and unwilling to undertake changes in plant or methods of operation that require large preliminary expenditures of money. Certain metals command fair prices: nickel, tin, and molybdenum. The precious metals, gold and silver, have been given greater values by natural processes of economics or by proclamation, but are of so much less importance in industry, in total value, and number of men employed, that they have not greatly raised the average for the mining business. The increased value of gold which was established in 1933 has stimulated .the search for new deposits, and aided efforts to revive some of the old mines &apos;Where it is hoped to find quantities of marginal ore now become profitable. The higher price did not increase production very much for 1934, but two discoveries of major importance, and others yet to be proved, will help later. The two referred to are the Lupa gold field in Tanganyika Territory, and the Silver Queen mine on Soledad Mountain near Mojave in California. The first was recently discovered, and is being developed by the East African Goldfields, Ltd. Uncompleted explorations of the croppings early in the year had exposed for measurement and sampling to a shallow depth, three ore shoots as gregating 7400 ft. in length and 6 ft. in width, containing 0.375 oz. of gold per ton. Most methods for the treatment of scrap printed circuit boards do not reclaim the components in working order as the boards are either fed to a copper smelter, to recover the valuable elements, or, simply landfilled. This work reports the dissolution of the solder in fluoroboric acid containing Ti4+ ions which was particularly selective for solder, allowing the components to be recovered. The solder was subsequently electrowon from the leachant. The boards were then shredded and the copper dissolved in ammonium sulfate and, then treated via solvent extraction to give an electrolyte suitable for electrowinning. The remainder of the metals were dissolved aqua regia, silver remained unattacked by the aqua regia, palladium precipitated as Pd(NH4)Cl6 in the presence of zinc and nickel, the gold was removed by solvent extraction and precipitated as nanoparticles. The aqua regia was then diluted and the zinc and nickel separated by solvent extraction.

There has been a steady increase in shiploading capacities in the last 20 years. One of the reasons has been the general increase in ship sizes, with the largest vessels currently around 280,000 DWT in the bulk trades. Obviously, the large vessels can accept loads faster and their economic utilization justifies higher loading rates, up to a point. The high capacity facilities have loading rates far beyond this point. The economic logic of these facilities is based on the fact that for a given annual throughput the capital and operating cost of a single high capacity system is less than that of two smaller systems. Thus, where the projected throughputs are large, there is a great incentive to reduce capital costs by maximizing capacity. Tubarao, in Brazil, designed for a 100 million ton per year throughput with one finger pier and one high capacity berth is a successful demonstration of this approach. In the current state of the art, the high capacity systems have shiploading capacities in the range of 10,000 - 16,000 TPH, for annual throughputs of 20 million tons and larger per loading berth.

The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

Northparkes Mines commenced production in 1994 and the mine has significant reserves to allow operation into the future. There are a number of potential future concentrator feed sources with variable sulfide mineralogy and grades.In February 2012 a comprehensive flotation survey was conducted to allow mass balancing and evaluate the operation of the flotation circuit. A rudimentary, copper element only, unsized flotation simulator was developed to evaluate high level potential for optimisation and improvement. In 2013 this flotation model was expanded to produce a mineral based, floatability component model to estimate the effect of future concentrator feed source on metallurgical performance. This revised model allows various circuit configurations to be simulated to provide a high level blueprint for the long-term planning to maximise performance.This paper provides a review of the process followed to develop the model, including an analysis into the mineral floatability component model and its calibration against plant operations. The effect of varying feed mineralogy and feed quality on future performance has allowed an internal review of potential circuit changes needed to accommodate the changing future feed.CITATION:Clarke, D, Harbort, G, Morgan, D and Sola, C, 2014. Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

Mining in Western Australia places significant economic and environmental responsibility on Government and the mining industry. Groundwater abstraction is regulated by the Department of Water. The Department has recently issued a guideline for Pilbara mines, and this paper focuses on the Pilbara for its examples and studies. The guideline is intended to form the basis for developing a statewide policy, consistent with reporting and assessment policy.With rapid expansion of the mining industry between 2005 and 2008, the groundwater resources in the Pilbara region of the State are under increasing pressure. Significant new management and regulatory issues arising recently include: cumulative impact assessment; disposal of dewatering excess by discharge, sharing or reinjection; life-of-mine approvals and closure planning; closure water quality including metals concentration in pit lakes; and in situ leaching mining methods and their impacts on regional water resources (and change of State Government Policy with respect to uranium mining).

Scarcely a month goes by that I or someone else at Newmont Mining or Newmont Gold isn&apos;t asked to give a talk on the topic I was asked to discuss today. Investors, financial analysts, geologists, metallurgists, even our government--everybody wants to know what the future holds for gold mining. Well, you&apos;re not going to get exactly what you asked for. Today, I&apos;m prepared to focus primarily not on what the future will bring to us, but rather on what the future will demand from us. More than that, I cannot undertake because it isn&apos;t within my scope to predict how wise and resourceful everyone in our industry will be in the future. What our future will hold, as I see it, will depend on our--and our colleagues&apos;-- responses to these very real demands. Three critical issues stand out in my mind as to what the future will demand of us in the gold mining industry. And these demands will be for: 1. The very greatest of technical expertise and innovation. 2. The highest order of environmental sensitivity and timely accommodation. 3. Planning, planning and more planning. All of these flow inexorably today from the traditional objective of any mining company--or any company in any business, and that is, to make money. Nothing as I see it, should be undertaken by a geologist, metallurgist or even an environmental department, unless the exercises will enhance profits; and nothing may be ignored which can have consequent damage to the bottom line. Thus, the three issues I&apos;ve listed for you subordinate themselves to the objective of making money, although at least in the environmental area, it might seem to some that we can only incur additional costs without even a dollar-for-dollar return. I hope to disabuse you today of any such out-of-date notion. Let&apos;s tackle the first issue-- Technical Expertise and Innovation. Newmont Gold Company this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary of successful and profitable operations on the Carlin Trend. Carlin in 1961, which is when exploration began on the "Trend" by Newmont, actually may share a lot of similarities with Carlin today. They didn&apos;t then know where the gold was and, if they found it, they had one hell of a challenge mining and processing ore at a profit because gold was selling at only $35 an ounce. Today, we know where the current reserves are. But we don&apos;t know where our future reserves lie. Furthermore, we don&apos;t know exactly how we&apos;re going to mine them, and, as everyone here knows too well, we don&apos;t know what the optimum metallurgical treatment is, even if we can find and mine them. And all that despite the abundant level of modern experience and skills within the current generation of mining companies, and the fact that, even taking inflation into account, gold sells at a higher price today than in 1965 when Carlin began operations. But, of course, I&apos;m telling you what you already know.

"Quantifying exposure to diesel exhaust aerosol in an underground coal mine depends on the ability to measure this component of respirable mine aerosol separately from coal dust. Such measurement is complicated by the carbonaceous nature of both the diesel and coal dust particulate that make up the respirable aerosol. Hence, special sampling and analytical techniques must be used to distinguish between these two aerosol components.As part of a continuing study of diesel exhaust aerosol characteristics, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has applied size selective sampling together with gravimetric analysis to separate and measure respirable diesel exhaust and coal dust aerosol concentrations in diesel-equipped underground coal mines. This technique is based on the premise that the diesel portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicrometer and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater than 1 µm in size. In the study, chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling, based on the distribution of chemical elements in aerosol and aerosol source material samples, is used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.Based on the results of the study, the Bureau, in cooperation with the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), have developed a prototype personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. The sampler has three stages: a preclassifier stage to select for respirable aerosol, an inertial impaction stage with an aerodynamic diameter(d) size cut at 0.8 µm to separate diesel aerosol from mineral dust and collect the mineral dust, and a final filtration stage to collect the diesel fraction of the sample. The sampler has been evaluated in both laboratory and field experiments conducted by the Bureau, MSHA, and the Generic Minerals Technology Center for Respirable Dust (GMTC-RD)."

"This paper is concerned with the application of an abrasive waterjet for metal shaping. The waterjet cutting technology uses water compressed to the pressure up to 55,000 psia which is accelerated in a cylindric nozzle. Abrasive particles are then supplied into the water stream and accelerated by the water. Cutting occurs via the interaction between the water-particles stream and a workpiece that causes material erosion at the impingement zone. The mechanism of this interaction enables shaping of practically any material with a minimal effect on the metallurgy of subsurface. The motion of the jet penetrating through a material body is guided by a robotic arm. A waterjet cutter is becoming one of the principal tools for shaping titanium, super-alloys and other hard-to-machine metals and composites. The shaping, resulting from the waterjet cutter, is very similar to laser beam cutting. However, unlike laser processing, there is no damage to the subsurface structure.The presented work discusses the experimental study of cutting of titanium plates. The results of these experiments demonstrate the potential of the abrasive waterjet as a shaping tool. IntroductionOne of the main avenues in the development of metal shaping is the use of high energy beams as cutting tools (1,2). There are a number of advanced beam oriented material removal technologies, such as laser, electron beam, plasma and abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting. The advantages of AWJ cutting are well understood and documented (3-14). This technology has the potential of becoming the principal tool for netshaping and netsurfacing of parts. However, the use of AWJ is currently limited to cutting of hard-to-machine materials such as titanium, superalloys, glass, composites, etc. The cost of A W J cutting is much higher and the productivity is much lower than those of the thermal cutting. At the same time abrasive waterjet can be used for shaping any existing technological material from fabrics, plastics, aluminum to glass, composites, and diamonds. The material losses during AWJ shaping are minimal. The roughness and waveness of the surfaces generated during AWJ cutting are substantially less than those of the thermal cutting. Due to the size of the jet cross-section total force exerted by the jet on a workpiece does not exceed 30-50 newtons. This terminates the need in the use of complex fixture for material holding. Low applied forces and low surface temperature prevent the damage of metal subsurface in the course of cutting. The small size of the impingement area will determine the limited width of the kerf. Due to the size of kerf and unidirectional character of the water jet the formation of practically any metal contour is possible."

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element in the environment and is toxic to biological systems. Arsenic can exist in the environment in the following redox states, arsenite (+3), arsenate (+5), arsine (-3) and elemental (0) (Oremland and Stolz, 2003). Arsenic is released into the environment by natural and anthropogenic activities such as rock weathering and ore mining, respectively. Such activities result in the release of the soluble inorganic arsenic oxyanions, arsenite and arsenate. The redox state of arsenic in the environment is influenced by a number of factors including, redox potential, pH and microorganisms (Irgolic et al, 1977; Genc-Fuhrman, Tjell and McConchie, 2004). Recently, the ability of microorganisms to influence the cycling of arsenic in the environment has attracted much attention. Microorganisms that can oxidise arsenite and reduce arsenate have been isolated and the mechanisms of arsenic metabolism are currently being investigated. The differences between arsenic resistance and arsenic metabolism are being revealed. The role of microorganisms in the release of arsenic into the environment is of particular importance with arsenic contamination of waters causing the death of millions of people worldwide, due to the consumption of contaminated water (Vasken Aposhian et al, 2003; Islam et al, 2004).

Methods in colorimetry are based on the assumption that the intensity of the&apos; color of a definite volume .of solution is directly proportional to the quantity of the color-producing substance present. In the preparation and examination of colored solutions there are three ways in which the depth of color may be varied. These variables are : (1) the quantity of&apos; the coloring matter; (2) the quantity of the solvent, or the dilution ; and (3) the thickness or depth of that portion of the solution examined. With these three variables as a basis, three general methods in colorimetry have been devised, all of which have been used in the determination of carbon in steel. In the first method, the quantity of the solution is kept the same for both the unknown steel and the standard, and the sections compared are of equal thickness, while the quantity of the standard is varied until the color obtained is of the same intensity as that produced by a definite quantity of the unknown steel. In laboratories where this method is used there is prepared and kept for permanent use a series of solutions with varying amounts of the standard, representing the percentages of carbon from the lowest to the highest demanded in that laboratory. These standard solutions are kept in bottles or test-tubes of equal diameter, and are arranged in series from the faintest to the most intense color, so that it is a simple matter to find the place of the unknown steel in the series, when the solution is of a definite volume and is contained in a tube of the same diameter as the standard tubes. The Babb fault vein in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky. (fig. 1), is one of an extensive series of such veins in the Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois fluorspar district. First operated in 1904, the production to May 1, 1944, was estimated at 143,000 tons of fluorite ore. There are five mines (fig. 2) on the Babb fault zone - Guill ,Kentucky Babb, Delhi-Babb, Eagle-Babb and Howard-Barnes. The Bureau of Mines developed four of these properties by core drilling from July 9, 1943, to May 1, 1944. During that period a total of 8,177.8 feet of diamond drilling was completed in 28 holes.

The issues of double refractory gold ores pressure oxidation were considered. It was demonstrated that along with chloride autoclave preg-robbing which has been studied there are other negative external and intra-autoclave processes resulting in gold losses. It was found that an ingress of even low concentrations of NaCN, ferrum(II) and ferrum(III) cyanide complexes, as well as thiocyanate compounds into the autoclave leads to decrease of gold recovery during further cyanidation in a "carbon in leach" process (CIL). Admixtures depressing recovery of gold can get into the autoclave together with water in the result of industrial accidents or due to peculiarities of recirculation of industrial water used for feed pulp preparation or with quench-water used for process temperature maintenance. In contrast to a chloride preg-robbing which occurs only at pressure oxidation of double refractory gold ores, cyanide preg-robbing starts in the autoclave feeding tank (so-called «upper» preg-robbing). Possible causes of cyanide autoclave preg-robbing and requirements to the quality of water supplied to autoclaving were discussed.
