Bauxite was first discovered in-the United States near Rome, Ga., in 1887, Approximately 400,000 tons of bauxite ranging from 46 to-62 percent alumina were mined in the area from 1888 to 1930. In February 1943, The Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. installed a dryer and began mining and reworking dumps from the old bauxite mines. Some 3,000 long tons were dried and shipped to the chemical industries from March 1943, to June 30, 1943. In 1941 and 1942, representatives of the Bureau of Mined and the Federal Geological Survey/ visited this area and proposed an exploratory project that at first was to be confined to the Heritage district northeast of Rome (see fig; I). The Bobo district, southwest of Rome, was to be explored after work .1n the Hermitage district was completed. The Hermitage district comprises an area of about 50 square miles in the northwest quarter of Bartow County and the adjacent portion of Floyd County. It is bounded on the north by the Gordon County line, on the east by U. S. Highway 41, on the south by U. S. Highway 441, and on the west by State Highway 53.

"Abstract Pile foundation is one of fundamental techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of superstructures. Wide varieties of piles having various shape, size and material were developed and have been applied to a lot of construction projects throughout the world. The deep mixing method, an in-situ admixture stabilization method, was developed in 1970s in Japan and the European countries, and has been frequently applied to many construction projects for various improvement purposes such as increasing bearing capacity and horizontal resistance, reducing ground settlement, preventing liquefaction and so on. The design methods, execution procedure and quality control and assurance (QC/QA) of the method are standardized or specified in many countries. These standards, specification and/or technical manual have been a remarkable contribution to spread the techniques throughout the world. The QC/QA is one of the major concerns for clients and engineers who have poor or no experience of the technologies. In order to assure the high quality of deep mixing work in the global market, it is necessary to establish the concept of QC/QA and correlate the output of different procedures. Upon the request by the organizing committee of the DFI-EFFC International Conference on Piling & Deep Foundations, the authors conducted survey of the specifications and standards on the piling and deep mixing technologies in Asian countries. When precast pre-stressed concrete piles are constructed, piles are usually set by inner excavation method because of preventing noise and vibration problems. More than 50 years ago, noise and vibration problems had not been serious problem in Japan, but around 50 years ago, they became serious and now less noise and vibration construction methods are used for pile construction on land in Japan. In Asian countries, though piles used for construction have a lot of variety, precast pre-stressed piles are commonly used. In this report, execution controls of construction methods of steel pipe piles and precast concrete piles are mainly considered."

Maximising margins in today's competitive international commodity markets demands superior productivity. This requires more than simply selecting the best equipment. It requires efficient production and commercial processes together with management systems recognised as international best practice. This paper introduces an integrated way of working that includes management systems for successfully changing work practices and attitudes, developing managers and increasing accountability. It provides an improvement methodology that includes systematic involvement of people in true continuous improvement of processes for maximising productivity and safety while minimising costs. Even though the principles are proven in all industry sectors worldwide, they are not always used correctly. This paper provides examples of traditional performance measurement systems to show how managers miss opportunities to control and improve both production and supporting service processes. It also describes the basic methodology for correct use of the principles and provides examples of correct implementation of modem systems in mining. The charts from actual mining case studies will be elaborated upon in the conference presentation. This paper's main aim is to provide background material for the presentation by introducing integrated principles for building best practice management systems for superior productivity and safety - for higher margins.

IN the present paper it is the writer's intention to largely confine the subject-matter to details relating to the metallurgical practice in connection W,ith the blast roasting of lead ores at the Port PiJ;ie works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. rather than to elaborate on mechanical plant details which are more or less standard equipment of the average Dwight and Lloyd or Huntington-Heberlein blast roasting installations (hereinafter referred to in the text as D. & L. and I.I. & H. respectively). The present blast roasting plant is a combination ot D. & L. straight line machines and IQ-ton H. & H. pots. The latter installation was an operating unit prior to the introduction of the D. & L. machines, the pre-roasting then being accomplished in Ropp roasting furnaces.On the introduction of the D. & L. machines the use of the Ropp roasting furnaces as a pre-roasting unit was discontinued, and this step of the process was then carried out on one section of the D. & L. installation.Consequently, then, the present plant consists of (1) A section of D. & L. machines, which operate solely as a pre-roastiIig unit. (2) A section of D. & L. machines which operate to their full capacity as 3, final roasting unit and treat the main portion of the pre-roasted material.

The Antamina Concentrator plant was one of the first plants in the world, where about 60 Megawatt only in Milling Power was installed. As a consecuence of the use of Gearless Mill Drives the speed of the mills is adjustable, which allows the operators react to the different ore grades correspondingly, in order to get the best results in terms of milling efficiency. In this sense, this paper describe the basic idea of a Gearless Mill Drive, the construction of it, the manufacturing facilities, the transport, the installation and the function in detail. It gave enough insights to understand why Gearless Mill Drives are so reliable and used as an adjustable speed drive, why it counts with the highest efficiency of all drive systems.But it did describe as well the overload capabilities, the reaction to the network, the reason why the maintenance of the drive system is proven as a minor issue, and finally it was self- explaining why the Gearless Mill Drive is called a working horse.

This paper investigated the pre-concentration amenability of sovite (carbonatite) ore to enhance the grade of rare earth elements (REE) bearing minerals by rejecting calcite, and to improve total rare earth elements (TREE) recovery using gravity and magnetic separation. A high proportion of calcite affects downstream processes like leaching due to high acid consumption. Multiple flowsheets combining gravity and magnetic separation were employed to target > 60% TREEs recovery to the final concentrate and > 60% calcite rejection to the tailings. Head analysis of the feed showed the sample’s main constituents as Fe (15.61%), Ca (16.04%), SiO2 (7.13%), and lastly TREEs (1.12%). Mineralogy liberation data at 2mm top size indicated poor liberation of TREEs, with the majority of minerals displaying < 30% mass greater than 80% liberated. Grain size distribution data showed that the majority of REE minerals are fine grained and report to the < 20 μm size class. Calcite liberation mineralogy showed < 60% mass greater than 80% liberation.A combination of a single-stage shaking table with a wet high intensity magnetic separator at a magnetic intensity of 7520 G was found to be the optimum flowsheet. For a shaking table feed with P80 of 150 μm followed by tails regrind to P80 of 45 μm as feed to wet high intensity magnetic separator, the overall mass balance results showed that 60.5% TREEs are recovered to the concentrate while 63.0% calcite is rejected to the tails. The value of the semi-coke thus produced would doubtless go far toward solving the problem of smoke prevention, and suggests the possibility of the substitution of a smokeless fuel for anthracite and so-called smokeless coals. Whether such coke would have any value as metallurgical coke is a question which cannot be answered for lack of any experimental data in the use of such material. In discussing so-called "volume rates" for the movement of coal, I start from one basic premise: That it is the job of the railroads to devise rates which will move the traffic, while at the same time assuring a fair return on their investment. No matter how reasonable and nondiscriminatory freight rates may be, if they fail to attract and hold traffic to the rails, they are utterly useless - both to the carriers and the shipping public. And it will be my purpose here to show that under certain circumstances the use of volume rates by the railroads enables them. to hold traffic which would otherwise be lost, and to avoid needless dissipation of revenues, Properly employed, volume rates should benefit both the coal industry and the railroads, I do not, however, advocate the discarding of the carload as the basic rate-making unit. Far from it. Sound operating reasons dictate the making of rates based on car- loads, and the tradition of carload rates has a firm foundation in railroad operating costs, many of which vary directly with cars handled. In short, the carload was, Is and, in my opinion, will continue to be the basis for most rail rates on coal, as well as on other commodities. But change is an inevitable result of progress, and we should not be so bound by tradition that we are unwilling to try novel methods of ate making, should the circumstances require, The modern rate maker must, now and then, run the risk of being called an iconoclast if he is to keep up with the times. As T will point out, volume rates were for many years rejected by both the Interstate Commerce Commission and the railroads, But now both the Commission and the carriers have come to recognize that under proper circumstances and conditions volume rates are a powerful and effective tool.

The Geo-Heat Center has been investigating the utilization of waste silica from the Cerro Prieto geothermal field for several years. The main objectives of the research were to com-bine silica with various additives to (1) form bricks for low cost housing, and (2) to produce a suitable road surfacing material. The various additives that were tested included hydrated lime, portland cement, plastic fibers, asphalt cement and emulsified asphalt. The silica-cement combination produced the strongest bricks and had the best weather resistance, whereas, the silica-lime combination produced the bricks with the lowest thermal conductivity and specific gravity density. The addition of plastic fibers to the silica-lime mixture improved both strength and weather resistance. The combination of asphalt and silica is not suitable as a road surfacing material, however, silica-cement appears promising.

AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER and in greater or less amounts, gold has been mined in at least 40 of California&apos;s 58 counties. It may not be inappropriate, by way of introduction, to give a brief historical statement relative to her production of the yellow metal. The presence of gold in the gravels of San Gabriel, San Francisquito, and other streams near Los Angeles, was known and they were worked in a small way by the Indians, at least as early as. 1841&apos; and possibly 1820. -On March 2, 1844, Don Manuel Castanares, deputy for California to the Congress of Mexico, reported&apos; to his government that placers near Los Angeles had yielded up to December, 1.843, a total of 2000 oz. of gold dust, most of which had been sent (via Mexico) to tile United States Mint at Philadelphia.

"INTRODUCTION The Krausse Estate property was the site of the first lead silver mining in western Kentucky, which began with the sinking of the Andrew Jackson shaft in 1835 3/. The earliest miners considered fluorspar of no value and threw it upon the waste dump, but Crittenden County later became an important part of the western Kentucky and southern Illinois fluorspar district 4/, which has produced about 90 percent of the fluorspar mined in the United States. By 1945, approximately 35,000 tons of fluordpar ore had been produced from the Estate property.This property can be reached by traveling west from Marion on Highway 60 from 2.5 miles, than northward 3 miles. The road from the paved highway to the mines is very rough but not impassable even in bad weather. Ore is hauled 5 1/2 miles by truck to custom mills at Marion, a town of 2, 000 population, where the Illinois Central Railway was a freight station.Hurricane Creek runs through the eastern part of the property. The surface slopes steeply upward to west from the creek, and the topography is rough. The top of the hill is about 150 feet above the creek.The climate permits working throughout the year, but spring rains cause surface water to enter mine and water apparently drains southward along the fractured fault zones, so that when no water is being pumped at properties north of the Krausse Estate a heavy flow comes on the Krausse."

We conducted a preliminary assessment of an extensive deposit of historic tailings discharged over a period of 40 years to the shoreline along a Southern Peruvian coastline. The tailings formed an extensive beach approximately 2.4 km long and 300 m wide. The tailings consist principally of pyrite (37 to 59 per cent), hematite (nine to 20 per cent), magnetite (three to 13 per cent) and quartz (11 to 36 per cent). The present operating company was required to evaluate the feasibility of capping the ocean side tailings deposit, however, given the size of the undertaking and the potential to reclaim residual minerals from the tailings, it was prudent to first evaluate whether capping would in fact reduce the impacts to the marine environment. Therefore this preliminary assessment examined: 1. metals contamination in tailings, shoreline porewater and marine sediments; 2. reactivity of tailings and acid generation potential; and 3. the potential for biological effects from metal contamination in the uplands tailings (solid phase) and beach porewater. Based on mineralogy, column leach studies and chemical results, the upland tailings have a high geochemical potential to acidify and release metals, especially copper, nickel and zinc, should they be subject to oxygenated and aqueous conditions. But, the extreme arid climate results in very low potential for precipitation and virtually precludes the transport of acid drainage reaction products from the upland tailings towards ocean. Wind erosion caused by offshore winds is likely a small source of tailing transport to the ocean. Since some potential exists to reprocess the tailings in the future, capping does not seem justified at present.

There are several simulators available and are being used for analysis, improvement and optimal control of the grinding process. However, these tend to be developed on informal software engineering methodologies. The informal approach is not suitable for long term development and a formal design methodology is necessary to develop efficient, error-free, and easy-to-use and to maintain software. In meeting this goal, basic concepts of a software model for describing the mineral process objects has been proposed. The software model forms the basis for software design and efficient implementation of the simulation. This paper describes the development of software models for grinding circuits. The work constitutes the theoretical foundation for the development of an advanced simulator for comminution.

"The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) has been developed as an engineering tool for the prediction of subsidence deformation indices through the implementation of an influence function. SDPS provides a reliable and fast method for the prediction of mining-induced displacements, strains, tilt, and so forth at any elevation between the seam and the horizontal or varying surface topography. One of the key aspects in obtaining reliable ground deformation prediction results is the determination of the edge effect offset. The value assigned to the edge effect corresponds to a virtual offsetting of boundary lines delineating the extracted panel to allow for roof cantilevering over the mined out area. The objective of this paper is to describe the methods implemented in updating the edge effect offset code within SDPS. Using known geometric equations, the newly developed code provides a more robust calculation of the offset boundary line of the extracted panel for simplistic, as well as more complex, mining geometries. Assuming that an extracted panel is represented by a closed polyline, the new edge offset algorithm calculates a polyline offset into the extracted panel by the user-defined edge effect offset distance. Surface deformations are then calculated using this adjusted panel geometry. The MATLAB® program was used for development and testing of the new edge effect offset feature. In completing rigorous testing regimes, the new offset features will be integrated into SDPS, further increasing the speed and reliability of the programs resulting in a retrospective increase in capability and flexibility. INTRODUCTION Underground operations have been known to cause mining-induced subsidence inside and outside of the mine permit area (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008). Additionally, subsidence can impact surface water bodies, such as rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015; Newman et al., 2016), as well as infrastructure, such as roads, railroads, pipelines, and buildings. With an increase in regulatory focus on mining-induced impacts to local structures, the calculation of mining-induced subsidence indices has become necessary in determining potential damage and mitigation efforts. The accurate prediction and evaluation of mining-induced ground deformations is required to obtain underground mining permits due to potential impacts to nearby structures, as well as hydrogeological sources. The prediction of ground deformation indices is often a complex task due to the number of input parameters required, such as mining geometries, overburden lithology, surface topography, the rate of mining (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008)."

A prática de inertização de um distribuidor de 17,7 t para lingotamento contínuo de aços foi estudada numericamente através de um modelo matemático tridimensional não-isotérmico. O modelo considera uma única fase gasosa composta de dois componentes: argônio e ar. A turbulência foi levada em conta por meio do modelo k-e padrão. Os cálculos foram executados utilizando o software de CFD comercial ANSYS CFX. Diferentes configurações do sistema de inertização foram simuladas. Os resultados indicaram que a configuração atual é ineficiente e novas configurações foram sugeridas. Algumas recomendações para a correta prática de inertização também são fornecidas.

Chalcopyrite and pyrite are among the major gold bearing minerals in the world. The gold content in chalcopyrite and pyrite varies from 0.02 to 200 ppm and 0.01 to 20 ppm, respectively. Apart from gold, chalcopyrite is also the primary source of copper. Thus, the recovery of gold and copper are often associated with the recovery of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Flotation is one of the most successful methods applied to beneficiate chalcopyrite and pyrite. The success of a flotation process depends on an appropriate choice of the flotation collector used to achieve the desired selectivity. A thorough understanding of the atomic structure of the predominantly exposed mineral surfaces can immensely aid in developing highly selective collectors that can exploit both the physical and chemical characteristics of these surfaces. In the present study, density functional theory calculations within the plane wave framework are used to understand the surface structure and reconstruction of the most stable chalcopyrite (001), (100), (110) and (112) and most stable pyrite (100) surfaces. The chalcopyrite (001) and (100) metal-terminated surfaces undergo significant reconstruction and result in metal-metal bond formation in the sub-surface layer while the surface layer is replaced by S-atoms. On the other hand, the (001) and (100) S-terminated surfaces show S—S disulfide bond formation upon relaxation, which are consistent with literature reports. The chalcopyrite (110), (112) surfaces and pyrite (100) surface undergo rearrangement, but no reconstructions in terms of metal-metal or disulfide bond formation are observed on these surfaces. A new thermal analysis technique has been developed and tested. It utilizes the enhancement in heat transfer characteristics associated with a recent advancement in heat pipe technology. Heat is extracted from a liquid sample of a melt taken in-situ within a vessel or furnace. The rate of heat extraction is such as to cause the sample to solidify. The technique was tested in both laboratory scale and industrial scale (Grenville Castings, Perth, Ontario). A 356 Al Alloy, subjected to various melt treatments was used to perform the tests. Classical thermal analysis was also performed simultaneously using a preheated graphite cup and at the same melt conditions. The comparison showed the potential of the new technique over classical thermal analysis. The major advantages of the new method are that it conducts the analysis inside the melt (i.e. a physical sample is not removed from the melt), it consumes less time and the cooling rate can be precisely controlled during the solidification process. This chapter deals with the use of industrial minerals in insulating materials used to control our thermal and acoustical environment. There are numerous products on the market used for thermal and acoustical insulation; they consume substantial quantities of a variety of industrial minerals. Following is a brief review of the theory and function of insulating materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, and architectural acoustics deals with sound in buildings. If this definition is broadened to include transportation vehicles, it is this end use for which acoustical insulations are primarily manufactured. Sound is defined as the auditory sensation in the ear, or the disturbance in a medium which causes this sensation. Acoustical insulation is used to reduce or eliminate noise, defined as unwanted sound. Noise control may be accomplished by the reduction of sound radiation at the source, by utilizing sound reducing construction methods such as staggered studs, etc., to control sound transmission, or by using sound absorbing material on walls, ceilings, and floors (Rossing, 1985). Acoustical insulation functions by absorbing the energy in sound waves in a porous material. As the sound waves penetrate the pores, they are dissipated by reducing the amplitude of vibration of the air molecules by contact with the pore walls, with subsequent conversion of the sound energy to heat energy. Acoustical insulation is generally highly porous, 1.3 cm or greater in thickness, and has interconnected pores. Acoustical insulating materials include fibrous vegetable or mineral matter and cellular organic and inorganic material, such as natural or manufactured foams (Sabine and Moulder, 1979). Acoustical materials are most commonly porous boards and tiles, which are often composite materials with perforated facing. Roof insulation board and lightweight concrete can also contribute to the absorption of noise. Thermal insulation is defined as material used to control the flow of heat. It may be used for heat control from low cryogenic temperatures (below -100°C) to in excess of 2 200°C for applications such as ablative shields for spacecraft. Heat transfer occurs by conduction, convection, or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat without the movement of the conducting medium, as through a metal. Heat convection through a liquid or gas takes place by movement of the medium. Forced convection is the basis for heating and cooling equipment, utilizing pumps or blowers to transfer the thermally conditioned fluid. Free or natural convection occurs due to density differences in the fluid. Radiation is the transfer of energy in space (Eckert, 1985). Conduction of heat through a solid is reduced by insulating the body with foams, or fibrous or small celled granular material. Heat transfer through a gas (convection) is controlled by creating many small pores which inhibit the movement of the fluid, substituting a gas of low thermal conductivity, or evacuating the space. Heat radiation can be reduced by the use of materials that reflect or absorb the energy (Glaser, 1967). Thermal insulating materials may be vegetable or mineral fibers, organic or inorganic particles, or foams with small pores, generally used to form a low density thermal barrier. They may be blocks, poured lightweight cementitious materials, bricks, etc.

"The new 11-story U.S. Federal Courthouse building in downtown Los Angeles demanded a cost effective foundation system capable of attaining a strict total settlement criterion of 0.5 inches (12 mm) under high applied loads. A design-build ground improvement system consisting of 3 ft (0.9 m) and 7 ft (2.1 m) diameter deep soil mix (DSM) columns embedded into the relatively soft Fernando Formation bedrock was selected for the project. The DSM columns support applied stresses of up to 8,800 psf from four large concrete core elements that transfer concentrated building loads to a 3 to 6 ft (0.9 to 1.8 m) thick reinforced concrete mat. The soil mixing ground improvement solution provided flexibility by allowing installation of the DSM columns around existing belled caissons left in place from prior structures, and by allowing repositioning of some of the DSM columns to avoid other existing obstructions in the fill. DSM spoils were used to construct a 2 ft (0.6 m) thick load transfer platform on top of the DSM columns. Quality control measures included utilizing equipment outfitted with automated data acquisition systems, performing three full scale load tests, performing daily wet-mix sampling and compression testing, performing full-depth coring and unconfined compression testing on core samples, and using a borehole acoustic televiewer to evaluate the uniformity of the DSM columns where core recovery was problematic. The results of subsurface investigation and the load tests were used to develop 3-dimensional finite differences models for evaluating stress distribution and deformation of the foundation system.INTRODUCTIONThe new U.S. Federal Courthouse building is currently under construction in downtown Los Angeles, California. The new courthouse will be 11 stories tall with one partial below-grade B1 basement level. The building will have four structural core elements that extend from the main building foundation at the B1 level to the top of the structure. The majority of the building loads will be transferred through the structural core elements to a new 3 to 6 ft (0.9 to 1.8 m) thick reinforced concrete mat beneath the central portion of the structure. The foundation pressures beneath each of the core element locations will be approximately 6,200 to 8,800 psf (300 to 420 kPa) with lower foundation pressures at locations farther away from the central core area."
