The Limit Equilibrium (LE) analysis of pile-supported geotechnical structures normally assumes a constant shear force for the pile instead of considering the non-linear capacity of the pile which is related to the pile displacement. In this study, a 3D Limit Equilibrium analysis is carried out for a landslide model supported with piles by considering the constant and non-linear capacity of the pile which is computed using a separate Finite Element (FE) algorithm. The depth of the pile, soil layering, and the pile properties are used with an assumed maximum displacement to compute the geotechnical non-linear capacity of the pile. In this study, the results of the initial unreinforced 3D LE model was first compared to the 3D FE analysis results. Then, the pile pattern was applied to the failure region in the 3D LE model, and then the factor of safety was recomputed. The results of the constant shear piles were compared to the model with the non-linear piles.

"The drilling mud is an essential part of the drilling process, which plays a major role in keeping safe and efficient oil and gas well drilling. In the oil industry, bentonite clay dissolved in water produces the simplest type of drilling muds. Bentonite clay contains montmorillonite particles. These particles are dispersed uniformly in water and such dispersions are used in various industrial products like paints, ceramics, pesticides and drilling muds. The bentonite clay easily dissolves in water and increases the viscosity of the water, which is one of the most important properties of a drilling mud. Bentonite has the highest swelling capacity, which is responsible for building up of the viscosity of the clay-water system. The flocculation behavior of bentonite is one of the major concerns for the performance of the water-based drilling mud in the oil and gas well drilling process. The behavior of drilling mud greatly depends upon the quality and quantity of bentonite clay, as well as the additives that are used in their formulations. In this work, a comprehensive study has been carried out to find out the effect of added polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer, surfactant, pH and salt concentrations on the dispersion/ flocculation characteristics of bentonite clay-water system. It has been observed that the increase in PAM dosage reduces the residual turbidity and improves the settling rate of the bentonite particles. The flocculation rate has also been found to be better under higher pH conditions. The combined effect of salt concentration and PAM dosage improved the overall flocculation efficiency of the system.INTRODUCTIONIn the oil industry, bentonite clay dissolved in water produces simplest type of drilling muds. Bentonite particles form aggregate under certain conditions including high temperature, and high concentration (Luckham and Rossi, 1999). If the quality of bentonite is not sufficient to accomplish intended viscosity of the muds, it is essential to add certain additives to increase the viscosity and prevent aggregation of the system (Razi et al., 2013). The anionic polymer bearing sample can build up inter-particle bonds between the polymer and clay particles. The addition of various additives like, polymers control the dispersion and enhance the viscosity of the mud by controlling the flocculation of montmorillonite particles in bentonite dispersion (Heller and Keren, 2002; Mahto and Sharma, 2004)."

DOES mining pay? Inasmuch as the whining of minerals from Nature is one of the world's principal sources of new wealth, this question is of general economic interest but it is obviously of even more vital concern to investors and those engaged in mining. In a previous article on "Wage Costs in the Mineral Industries,' published in the November issue, I attempted to show that wages paid workers on the job accounted for, roughly, 50 per cent of the mine dollar. Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d’Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long holes stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23.0 M tonne (25.3 M ton) of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 M tonne (2.0 M ton) are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km (0.62 mile) radius of the mine site.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

The current political climate has forced multinational cement manufacturers to consider technology that minimizes GO, emissions. Along with this environmental issue, individual manufacturing facilities are under constant pressure to increase productivity and lower costs. The use of processing or functional additions can help address these difficult demands by maximizing the extender content in blended cements. Recently, cement standards have been modified such that additions can be employed to improve quality. By using these "cement performance enhancers," the cement manufacturer can maximize extender content of cement thus optimizing plant economics, while meeting local quality standards and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

For many years line-of-sight (LOS) issues for underground mobile equipment is a growing focus of research. This research is a result of the numerous fatalities and injuries which occur in the mining industry and which are related to poor operator LOS. Three assessment methods are currently used to assess operator LOS of underground mobile equipment. The light filament (LF) method is a hands-on assessment method that is performed in the field. This method is not evaluated in this paper. The laser scan (LS) method of assessing equipment is a quick and reliable method that comes from the need to evaluate vehicles already located in the field. The computer simulation (CS) method can assess LOS issues using a computer aided drawing (CAD) model, which is useful for assessing current or prototype models. The purpose of the current research is to compare and validate different operator LOS assessment methods. Comparison of the results of the LS and CS visibility plots yielded similar quantifiable results. A visual comparison of the results further illustrate that the LS and CS methods are acceptable assessment tools for mobile equipment operator LOS evaluation. The visibility assessment methods are now being prepared as guidelines for the mining industry to assess current and potential designs.

Eldorado Resources Ltd.(ERL) uses a solvent extraction process for the processing of uranium ores. The solvent extraction plant consists of 4 extraction and 5 stripping stages with regeneration carried out as required (Wyper, 1982). Extraction is carried out with a solvent consisting of 4.5 vol % Alamine 336, 4.5 vol % Isodecanol and 91 vol % kerosene. The extraction step can be represented as In equation (1).

The series of events leading to the adoption of more complex flotation circuits for coal have been reviewed. In essence, it has been concluded that ac- ceptable overall flotation recovery will only be obtained when efficient distri- bution of collector over all the component feed size fractions is ensured. The achievement of this goal is most likely to be obtained by feed classification and separate flotation of appropriate size fractions. The adoption of such a phil- osophy, however, imposes a number of process problems of both a chemical and an engineering nature. Some of these problems have been identified and possible solutions discussed. A case is emerging for the development of a new generation of flotation cells designed specifically for the flotation of classified coal and for the development of a series of novel re- agents which have the propensity to float middling particles.

IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Midvale concentrator, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Midvale concentrator, a custom lead-zinc selective flotation plant, is in Salt Lake County, Utah, on a flat site several hundred yards east of the Jordan River and about 200 yards south of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks leading to Bingham Canyon. The site is at an elevation of about 50 feet above the river, the highest available location, thus allowing maximum storage of tailings.

THE Wednesday morning session was devoted entirely to the consideration of the tentative code for coal mine ventilation. A. W. Hesse is chairman of this subcommittee. E. A. Holbrook presided at the session and assisted by A. W. Hesse and George S. Rice, gave the historical background of the movement for a ventilation code. They stressed the point that this was to be an engineer's code, and that it was hoped that it might serve as a valuable guide to operating companies in securing greater efficiency as well as safety in ventilation. The discussion was continued into the afternoon session, and by adjournment the entire' code had been covered.' Many sections were referred back to the Committee for further study and several new sections were suggested. The various opinions and new ideas brought out during the discussion proved very valuable and. contributed much to the progress being made in the preparation of this code.

The largest potential reserves of manganese in Nevada are in the Pioche district. To date, these large reserves of 10-to l2-percent manganese cannot be upgraded economically. Other large, low-grade deposits, such as the Virgin River and Boulder City deposits in Clark County, cannot be considered immediate sources of manganese. Reserves of the principal manganese deposits in Nevada, based on the most reliable estimates, total about 17 million tons analyzing 7.6 to 13.6 percent manganese. Most of the deposits are of a type that cannot be prospected systematically but have been prospected and developed in the course of productive mining operations. To realize production from low-grade deposits that are amenable to concentration, a ready market must be provided. Thus far, Government stockpiles have been the major outlet for these low-grade ores. Research and experimentation over a period of years have led to development of several processes technologically applicable to these low-grade ore bodies, but their economics is not sufficient to allow competition with imported ores on the open market.

THE problem of drying ores is one that most mill-engineers are sooner or later called upon to meet, and it may be timely to point out sortie of the difficulties resulting from such operations from purely a metallurgical and economic stand-point. We mean, in the following pages, to discuss primarily the effect of such operations on. the ore itself, without particular reference to the mechanical or cost features of the subject; That an appreciable tonnage of the ore fed to the usual form of drier, either rotary or stack, is lost, is fairly well appreciated, but we believe that only a few mill-managers know just. what their drier-losses amount to, and we have found that in most cases they console themselves with the fact that the drier-smoke is not very much discolored, and it is generally believed that the draft is not sufficient to carry away more than a. negligible percentage of the values. The drying of ores is becoming an important factor. since the more general application of magnetic, static, and dry-table treatment. Its importance in the field of metallurgical operations warrants a close examination into its effects. This subject has been repeatedly brought hone to us, and while the drier-losses, in every case examined, have considerably exceeded even the most generous estimate, an attempt at a recovery of these values is rarely made. We have found that the losses resulting from drying-operations can be effectively recovered, at a low cost, and believe that the publication of the results of a number of investigations along these lines will be of interest and benefit to the profession at large. Data pertaining to pipe line flow for both oil and gas in horizontal or nearly horizontal pipe lines are both extensive and accurate. However, the pipe formulas used to determine pressure drop for flowing fluids (liquids and gases) under conditions of horizontal flow are not generally applicable to flowing oil and/or gas wells. Except for some data developed in small laboratory set-ups, little or no information was available concerning flow of oil and gas mixtures in vertical pipes, when, in 1928, the writer began the development of a method for computing pressure drops in the pipes of flowing oil wells, as outlined in this paper. In 1929, Urenl presented some findings based on laboratory experiments in which vertical flow of an extremely heavy crude oil was induced by means of air through a 2-in. pipe, 41 ft. long. The friction factors derived from the experiment, as well as values for pressure drop per 100 ft., are not believed satisfactory in their application to flow problems in the field. Versluys,2 also in 1929, presented a mathematical development of the theory of flowing oil wells, and in 1930, gave a companion paper3 setting forth some principles governing the choice of length and diameter of tubing in oil wells. Since the termination of the study presented in this paper, another valuable contribution pertaining to the problem of vertical flow was made by Moore and Wilde.4 Although there were writings dealing with the principles of the gas-lift, a search of the available literature indicated that specific information on vertical flow was lacking with the exception of the writings of Uren, Versluys, and Moore and Wilde, to which reference has been made.

NOx released during fuel combustion is one of the major air pollutants, such as acid rain and photochemical smog. At present, still not have an economical and effective method of inhibiting NOx emission for sintering flue gas. Therefore, controlling conditions of fuel combustions to enhance the reduction of NOx is important for decreased the emission. In this study, microsintering furnace has been performed to investigate the effects of NOx emission from char-N during coke breeze combustion. The results show that the emission concentration of NOx decreased with increasing temperature when it is sinter bed temperature higher than 1000℃. The lower emission concentration of NOx was obtained when the concentration of oxygen was decreased. And the maximum concentration of NOx will be reduced with the enhanced of heating rate. If heating preservation time was prolonged, it would promote to NOx reduction with reduction substances resulted in lower NOx emissions in the combustion of coke breezes.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. Flotation is the most common beneficiation route for tungsten ores, but the predominance of minerals with similar surface properties poses a real challenge. This study investigates the use of Falcon centrifugal separators for gangue minerals removal and desliming prior to flotation. A typical tungsten-bearing skarn ore (Tabuaço, Portugal) is used, containing scheelite (CaWO4) associated with dense calcium-bearing silicates (vesuvianite), fluorite, apatite and light silicates (feldspars) as gangue minerals. Two types of Falcon bowls (Falcon UF and Falcon SB) were used, prior to flotation tests with fatty acids as collectors and a combination of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate as gangue minerals depressants. This flowsheet was compared with a reverse configuration, using flotation prior to Falcon concentrator, and with a classical flowsheet, using hydrocyclone and flotation. Gravity pre-concentration and desliming with the Falcon concentrator were optimized through the design of experiments (DoE) methodology. The influences of pulp density, rotational speed, feed flowrate and fluidisation pressure (for the Falcon SB) were studied for both bowls. Results showed that the Falcon can be used as a desliming and pre-concentrating apparatus. Separation performances depend mainly on rotary speed and pulp density for the Falcon UF, whereas rotary speed and fluidisation pressure are the main parameters for the Falcon SB. With only one stage of Falcon SB, an enrichment ratio of 7.9 is obtained with a 65% WO3 recovery while 89% of apatite and fluorite are rejected, which constitutes a very good selectivity. In comparison, Falcon UF shows lower enrichment ratios, around 2.7. In terms of desliming, Falcon UF is as efficient as the hydrocyclone, while the Falcon SB is significantly more efficient. Hence, the use of Falcon SB prior to flotation improves the overall performance of the tungsten flotation route by desliming the flotation feed while pre-concentrating the scheelite. It impacts very advantageously the flotation, as most of the calcium-bearing minerals are eliminated. A Falcon SB stage prior to flotation yields a final concentrate grade of 29.7% WO3 with a recovery of only 36.8 % that should be optimized as the reagents dosages were not adapted to the pre-concentrated feed.

Slag fuming (SF) is a critical process for recycling zinc-containing slags, but the corrosive nature of molten slag poses challenges to the reactor durability. The freeze-lining (FL) technique offers a solution by forming a protective layer on the reactor wall. It requires intensive cooling using watercooled jackets, which can stabilise the FL while compromising the energy efficiency of the process. This study presents a computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-based model to optimise the SF process by considering FL formation and its impact on heat transfer and reactor wall temperature. A volumeof- fluid (VOF) model is coupled with a mixture continuum (MC) solidification model to capture the intricate multiphase flow dynamics within the SF furnace. Two FL types are considered: FL solidifying on the reactor wall in the slag bath region; and FL solidifying on the reactor wall in the freeboard region. The FL of the first type forms when the slag temperature drops below liquidus temperature. The FL of the second type only forms when a splash-induced slag droplet collides with the freeboard wall and solidifies. A series of splashing events are necessary to coat the freeboard wall. The simulation was run until a global energy balance was reached. This means that the heat losses from the water-cooled jacket, bottom wall, outlet and fuming balance the heat gains from the hot gas injected through the submerged plasma torches. The increase in FL thickness, due to its low thermal conductivity, reduces the heat losses through the reactor walls. The calculated FL thickness and heat fluxes were in good agreement with industrial data, validating the model’s credibility. The simulation results provided valuable insights into the fuming process, including slag bath temperature evolution, slag splashing dynamics, FL formation patterns, local heat fluxes through the reactor wall and overall energy balance. These findings can inform process optimisation strategies to enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of SF operations. The authors have built a prior version of the model framework and applied it to simulate FL formation in an electric smelting furnace (ESF). The results from both the ESF and the current SF highlight the applicability of such model framework to a range of industrial processes involving FL formation. This model framework can ultimately contribute to more energy-efficient and sustainable industrial operations.
