Press-fit systems are widely used to seal oil lines in the automotive engine components. In the case studied a ball plug made from the 7075 A1 alloy was inserted into a 319 Al alloy cast component. The oil lines were subjected to the required component service pressure. This paper addresses the analysis of the ball plug/casting hole press-fit performance. The tools used to investigate the plug system included: the SEMIEDS technique for the assessment of the plug and the casting hole wall surface integrity; image analysis methods for the characterization of the ball plug/casting hole interface; matrix microhardness measurements of the plug and casting components; laboratory ball plug insertion, speed and force correlation; as well as the ball shearing mechanism analysis. Laboratory tests indicated that optimization of the aluminum matrix hardness in the 319 A1 alloy cast components resulted in considerable improvement of the press-fit system sealing properties.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in terns of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder used. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

A new process for the treatment of silver crusts from desilverization of lead has been developed by Societe de Penarroya. The zinc contained in the crusts is recuperated by vacuum distillation at low temperature. The use of special retort crucibles is avoided. AT Noyelles-Godault the Parkes process (zinc addition to a silver-bearing lead melt) is used to desilverize lead bullion from the blast furnace. The crust which rises to the surface of the bath is removed and pressed by a well-known process in a press of the Howard type. The pressed crust, called zinc crust or silver crust, contains 10 pct Ag, 30 pct Zn, and 60 pct Pb. It is melted under a salt bed in a small, narrow, and deep kettle heated only in its upper part. A liquid concentrated alloy is obtained which is called T.A.C. in France (triple alliage concentr6) analyzing approximately 25 pct Ag, 65 pct Zn, 8 to 10 pct Pb, and 1 to 1.5 pct Cu. This T.A.C. is a real metallic alloy, completely deoxidized, and can be stored indefinitely. The process used at Noyelles-Godault consists in distilling this alloy in a tight furnace, under low vacuum and at low temperature, so that only the zinc distills and is condensed into liquid form. The residual silver-bearing lead is almost entirely free from zinc and oxidized dross. The vacuum dezincing equipment, see Figs. 1 and 2, consists of: 1) A furnace, constituted of a casing of steel plate lined with refractory bricks, heated internally by means of graphite resistors. The temperature of the furnace is measured by a thermocouple device and controlled by an automatic temperature regulator which acts upon the flow of the current passing through the resistors. Two doors, numbered 1 and 2 in Fig. 2, are provided for, one for charging the T.A.C., the other for tapping the high silver-bearing lead. 2) A condenser, and an ordinary room lined with good heat conductor refractory material. This condenser is provided with a graphite resistor which serves to bring to temperature when starting the furnace. A thermocouple records the temperature of the zinc melt and controls the temperature in the furnace, that is, the flow of current through the resistors, by means of the above mentioned regulator, so that the distillation rate in the furnace does not exceed that of the condensation. The condenser is connected to the vacuum pump by a filter. The whole equipment should, of course, be fluid-tight. The operation is carried out under a vacuum of about 10 mm Hg.

"Gekko Systems developed the Gekko Resin Exchange Column (G-REX) in order to optimise the recovery of gold in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, as an intermediate step using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin (Lewis-Gray et al, 2015). Operational experience has been gained at the CGT Ballarat Gold Plant in near continuous operation since 2008, treating unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of the technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.Aurix®100 ResinAuRIX®100 resin is a cross-linked polystyrene alkaline resin developed by Henkel (Virnig et al, 1996). The resin beads are off-white in colour, spherical, with a nominal size of 100% +600µm. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX®100 resin for use in its G-REX column as part of its unique suite of gravity gold handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realised with AURIX®100 resin, of around 4% to 12% in capital savings and 27% to 40% in operating costs (Virnig et al, 2004). Allied to this is that AuRIX®100 resin is not susceptible to fouling, that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds which would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, in service a dilute acid wash is carried out periodically on the resin to unblock resin pores."

"Stainless steel castings are used in abundance in the mineral processing industry. In rotary kiln-based processes, these castings are typically exposed to high loads, corrosive elements, mechanical abrasion and cyclical temperature exposure. In the processing of iron ore pellets, it is typical to use a traveling grate preheater or a straight grate furnace to heat the pellets. Both machines have a conveyor that is mainly comprised of high temperature stainless steel castings. It is these castings which are the focus of this study. The expected life of these castings can be quite short, their cost quite high and the effort to replace them very labor intensive. The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the failure modes of these castings. With that basic understanding, modifications to the alloy content could be made to achieve a new operational paradigm. That paradigm could be a cheaper casting, a longer lasting casting or a casting tailored to special operating conditions (for example, highly corrosive gases or sudden temperature shocks). Over the past 4 years, Metso Minerals has sought to achieve a better understanding of the failure modes through modeling, laboratory testing and sampling of used castings from various end-users. In addition, we have tested new alloys in a laboratory setting and also in the field to see how they would perform compared to the existing ""standard casting"". Our testing has revealed interesting data concerning the impact toughness, sigma phase content and formation, chloride attack and other performance attributes of various grades of stainless steel when exposed to cyclical temperatures. Interesting results were also obtained concerning the addition of rare earth elements (Niobium, Boron, etc), nitrogen and manganese to a typical ASTM A297 grade of stainless steel. To date, a few hundred test castings have been installed in iron ore pellet plants worldwide. Many of these test castings have already experienced a year or more of operation with good results.INTRODUCTION Cast stainless steels (ASTM A297 and similar) are a main constituent used in the construction of iron ore pelletizing equipment. A typical straight grate pelletizing machine would contain upwards of 160,000lbs of ASTM A297 Grade HH castings. With a typical casting lasting only two to four years, and a casting costing around $35USD, it is easy to see that the castings are a main contributor to the overall cost of producing the pellets. Grade HH and HI (see chemical composition listed below) became the “go to” materials in the 1960’s and very few changes have been made to this day (the exception being plants that switched to flux pellet production in the 1980’s)."

Current mine production planning, scheduling, and allocation of resources are based on mathematical programming models. In practice, the optimized solution cannot be attained without examining all possible combinations and permutations of the extraction sequence. Operations research methods have limited applications in large-scale surface mining operations because the number of variables becomes too large. The primary objective of this study is to develop and implement a hybrid simulation framework for the open pit scheduling problem. The paper investigates the dynamics of open pit geometry and the subsequent material movement as a continuous system described by time-dependent differential equations. The continuous open pit simulator (COPS) implemented in MATLAB, based on modified elliptical frustum is used to model the evolution of open pit geometry in time and space. Discrete open pit simulator (DOPS) mimics the periodic expansion of the open pit layouts. Function approximation of the discrete simulated push-backs provides the means to convert the set of partial differential equations (PDEs), capturing the dynamics of open pit layouts, to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Numerical integration with the Runge-Kutta scheme yields the trajectory of the pit geometry over time with the respective volume of materials and the net present value (NPV) of the mining operation. A case study of an iron ore mine with 114 000 blocks was carried out to verify and validate the model. The optimized pit limit was designed using Lerchs-Grossman?s algorithm. The best-case annual schedule, generated by the shells node in Whittle Four-X yielded an NPV of $449 million over a 21-year mine life at a discount rate of 10% per annum. DOPS best scenario out of 2 500 simulation iterations resulted in an NPV of $443 million and COPS yielded an NPV of $440 million over the same time span. The hybrid simulation model is the basis for future research using reinforcement learning based on goal-directed intelligent agents.

The result is to maintain, in the mill, a quiescent pool in which classification will occur at a limiting size corresponding to the pulp density. N-C operation is produced by effecting proper relationship among mill speed, ball diameter, volume of ball load, and pulp density. Such operation is typified by the primary ball-mill operation of the Tennessee Copper Company, Copper-hill, Tenn., and the Cleveland Cliff Iron Company, near Ishpeming, Mich.

From the early 70?s, ?Centre de Recherche Minérale? (CRM) has conducted and co-ordinated Research and Development activities for the mineralurgical and metallurgical industries. Since 1999, CRM has continued its mandate through COREM which is a consortium of 13 members that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive industry / university research. In particular, COREM?s ?In-Situ Optimization Group? is involved in the implementation of modern optimization and control tools. The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of modern optimization and control tools and methods for mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer in the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM?s members and are grouped into three main modules: - R&D Module: Research and Development in universities, research centres and other partners; - Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools and methods into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support; - Training Module: education of new engineers in universities, continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops and resource networking by specific information exchange tools. This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are presented, the first application is described and finally, future developments are discussed.

THIS report is a continuation of an earlier one with a similar title,1 to which the reader is referred for such details of procedure as do not appear here. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as re-ported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be com-pared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a con-siderable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated.

O desgaseificador RH é um reator de refino secundário bem estabelecido. Nesse equipamento, gás inerte é usado para promover a circulação de aço entre a panela de aciaria e uma câmara de vácuo. A predição correta da dispersão de gás na perna de subida do RH é importante para a modelagem confiável do processo. O presente trabalho estudou a penetração de gás na perna de subida do RH por meio de modelos físico e matemático. No estudo, foram considerados apenas um ou dois bicos injetores e vazões de gás, por bico, entre 5l/min e 50l/min. Para as condições com um bico injetor, os resultados das duas abordagens mostraram boa concordância qualitativa. Já para as condições com dois bicos injetores, a concordância só foi satisfatória para vazões de até 30l/min por bico. Adicionalmente, os resultados obtidos indicaram que o problema de penetração de gás em modelos matemáticos de desgaseificador RH identificado na literatura está relacionado com erros numéricos e não com falhas na modelagem da física do problema.

The paper introduces the problems encountered in designing open stopes and briefly examines the factors that determine the final stope dimensions achieved after mining is completed. A case study is presented where monitoring of a stope was considered necessary due to the expected formation of a highly stressed crown pillar above the stope. The influence, on the mining approach adopted, of a yielding crown pillar is discussed. Monitoring and numerical modelling were used to develop an understanding of the behaviour of the particular stope as mining progressed. A comparison between the measured displacements and the numerical predictions at an interim stage of mining was carried out to assist in choosing the final sequences involved in completing the stope.

The particle settling velocity is the argument of separation in such processes as classification and enrichment in jigs. It characterizes material forwarded to the separation process and belongs to the so-called complex arguments because it is the function of particle density and size. i.e. the function of two simple arguments. The affiliation to a given subset is determined by the values of two mag-nitudes and the distribution of such argument in a sample is the function of distributions of particle density and size. The paper will present a method of determining the distribution of settling velocity in the sample of spherical particles for the turbulent particle motion in which the settling velocity is expressed by the Newton formula. Because it depends on density and size of particle which are random variable of certain distributions, the settling velocity is a random variable. Applying theorems of probability, concerning distributions of function of random variables, the authors will present general formula of probability density function of settling velocity for the turbulent motion and particularly calculate probability density function for Weibull?s forms of frequency functions of particle size and density. Distribution of settling velocity will calculate numerically and perform in graphical form.

"Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. With increasing environmental constraints on the levels of disturbance induced by blasting operations upon nearby residents, there is an increasing need to be able to design cautious blasting with greater precision. Therefore, determination of maximum amount of explosive per delay for a certain distance especially in large blasts is of great importance for the elimination of these environmental problems. Although too many research studies had been carried out in the past in order to eliminate environmental issues produced from blasting unfortunately a general approach or formula has not been established yet because of the complexity of the matter. In addition to the wave and ground motion characteristics, the complexity of blasting parameters and site factors restrict the developing a general criterion. So experimental site-specific studies should be still done in order to predict and control blasting effects. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Espey Open-Pit Boron (Colemanite) Mine located on the west side of the central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study, ground vibration components were measured for 13 shots during bench blast optimisation studies in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site. In blasting operations; ANFO and Powergel Magnum 600 (blasting agent), Powergel Magnum (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 4 different types vibration monitors (3 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity obtained from the 38 record events were analysed statistically. At the end of statistical evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation which gives average line at 95% confidence level and upper bound 95% prediction line with a reasonable correlation coefficient was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance.

Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of producing similar fragmentation with different designs (involving different powder factors and costs associated) increases with the variability of the implementation.CITATION:Parra, H and Zenteno, D, 2015. London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

O. R. LYONS *—I wish to thank Mr. Vissac for his compliment. I hope that his paper is not only well received, but that it will serve to bring forth more papers on the subject of thermal drying. One of the primary purposes of the work performed by Battelle for Bituminous Coal Research in investigating the thermal drying of coal was to stimulate other investigators and to get them to contribute their knowledge in the form of papers such as this one. We at Battelle and the personnel of Bituminous Coal Research are very gratified that Mr. Vissac and other persons have responded in this matter of the thermal drying of coal. I wish to state that I think that Mr. Vissac's paper is a very clear and easily understood description of a method of calculating the design requirements for a screen type drier, and I think that it would be exceedingly valuable to operators and to those who intend to purchase any type of thermal drier and use it in the future, if the manufacturers or operators who have such information for other types of driers would provide the same type of information for the other makes of driers now on the market. 1 also wish to point out—an idea that is new to me, and I know is new to most of the operators of driers in the United States-—the idea of recovering the heat that is normally lost in the coal and in the exhaust gases. This heat is not being recovered at most (of the thermal drying operations in the United States, and the possibility of recovering it should be called to the attention of every single one of those operators. I know many of them have never given any thought to the matter, but they will be interested once they realize the ease with which it could be done and the savings that could be realized. I also wish to compliment Mr. Vissac for presenting the method of analysis that he uses to determine the difficulty of drying any particular coal. It is a very simple method, and yet it seems to me that it should be a very effective, very efficient method for determining the difficulty of drying for his particular problems. C. Y. HEINER*—I do not know that I can add anything very illuminating to what Mr. Vissac has said. I think anything that Mr. Vissac said in regard to coal drying is a contribution because, to my personal knowledge, he has studied the matter carefully for many years and made many valuable contributions. I am not too familiar with coal drying problems in the east, but I know in the west we have not made enough coal drying studies. I think coal operators too often just take the coal as it is and make more or less the best of it. There are relatively few washing plants in the west now, and so the problem has not come to the front as much as it probably will in the future. In this connection, it seems to me that this matter of drying the raw coal, as Mr. Vissac brings up, is an extremely important one. We have not a continuous miner ourselves, yet, but we expect to get some this year, and we think the percentage of fine coal-—that is, minus 3/16 in.—will double. We have about 20 pct minus 3/16 in. in the 8 in. by 0 size now, and we think we will likely have 40 pct, which will have a surface moisture of the order of 8 pct. To wash it satisfactorily, we will have to dry the raw coal first in order to screen it, and after that, I suppose, there will have to be dry cleaning of some sort. We have not really used dry cleaning on fines in the west yet to my knowledge, but it is a matter that has to be faced by the industry, and I am very hopeful that Mr. Vissac's study will assist us in that connection. W. L. McMORRIS*-In my company we are preparing largely metallurgical coal for a great number of byproduct coke plants. The most outstanding thing to me about the requirements of moisture in the finished product is that there is a different requirement for almost every coke plant. Each operator has a different set of factors on which he establishes his coking costs where they involve moisture. For our corporation operations in Birmingham, my company does not produce the coal, but in Birmingham they are getting away with moistures very much higher than our plant at Clairton, Pa., would tolerate. The moisture that we have to produce for the plants along the lakefront where they are subject to much more severe weather is something else again. We have not tackled heat drying, primarily because our customers do not know what heat drying will do to the coking characteristics of the coal. If the temperature of drying can be held down

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing has attracted considerable public and industry attention because of the significant quantities of energy consumption involved. In this context the question of what are worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements ought to be of the highest priority. It is however worth taking a step back to avoid falling in the trap of taking preconceived ideas that have been reiterated repeatedly before as gospel. The aim of this paper is to highlight areas where new or alternative approaches could potentially be the better way forward. Some may come as a surprise to conventional industry thinking. Ultimately any such solutions are attractive to practitioners not just in an environmental but also in an economic sense, and hence should be targeted through applied research and development efforts. This paper highlights key aspects of each group of opportunities and some of the individual approaches to provide an overview of the current status quo.MINING INDUSTRY POWER UTILISATION – WHERE IS THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK?The question of where is the biggest bang for the buck when trying to determine worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements has not always been reported on broadly enough, typically because industry practitioners operate in specific areas of expertise and comfort zone. Looking beyond the familiar doesn’t always come easy. Any technology or methodology consideration to address energy efficiency needs to take into account the context of alternative opportunities of superior value or risks not achieving desired uptake.
