Some of the advantages of the inductive method of electrical prospecting were emphasized in a paper by Dr. Max Mason. Since this emphasis was misunderstood by some to indicate a too exclusive interest in inductive methods, we are especially happy to help correct this impression by reporting on some of our work on surface potential methods. Earth Currents and Surface Potentials When two electrodes, A and B, are placed on the surface of the ground a distance d apart, and a 100-volt battery is connected across the elec- trodes, current flows from the positive electrode A to the negative electrode B. The current does not pass directly from A to B along the straight line joining these two points. In fact, a negligible amount of the total current chooses this direct path, and the flow actually takes place

Lemington coal mine is operating in an environmentally sensitive area in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia. Late in 1999 the southern pit was developed using a series of box cut blasts. After the initial development the area would have been free dug due to the soft, well-jointed nature of the deposit. However, it was decided to trial drill and blast to determine if shovel productivity could be improved to enable an overall mining cost reduction. The initial trial blast results were less than satisfactory with both environmental issues occurring and the desired shovel productivity not being achieved. An audit of the blasts indicated that wet ground and the presence of soft clay inter-bedded with harder rock caused the poor blast results. Also, water-affected explosive product combined with explosive energy loss into soft ground led to flat spots and tight digging in the hard band areas, resulting in the lower dig rates. Lemington Mine and Orica Explosives developed a plan to match the rock with the appropriate explosive type and energy. This resulted in a number of blasts over a six-month period using a new non fuming explosive product, æNovaliteÆ. The results have been excellent with the environmental issues being totally resolved and dig rates improved, enabling reductions in mining costs. This has allowed the mine to continue with their exemplary record of environmental management whilst achieving operational efficiencies.

There have been many developments in recent years in pipeline transport to enable them to be more widely used in industry. Substantial tonnages of materials that are not affected by water, such as coal and other minerals, aggregates and wastes, can be moved over considerable distances in quite small diameter pipes. Where there are no existing road or rail facilities, long-distance pipelines are usually cheaper to install, and this advantage increases in difficult terrain. Pipeline operators all over the world assert that hydraulic lines pay for themselves in a relatively short time, in spite of the heavy capital outlay, and this is equally true for lines convey-ing slurries or pastes within a plant complex.'This paper reviews some of the more important investigations in the hydraulic transport field. Although reference to systems carrying a wide range of materials is made, the majority of recent published data centres on coal transport.The paper looks at the application to a wide range of particle sizes, the development of non-aqueous slurrying media and coal/water fuels. The review also looks at some of the equipment being proposed to provide more reliable operation and in particular the range of solids-handling pumps now available.-The paper goes on to identify areas where further research and development is required and some of the many organisations undertaking this work.

The Bureau of Mines has been researching remote sensing analysis of an underground coal mining area in Utah and computer-aided methods of defining ground control hazards in this mining area. As a result of these studies, a preliminary potential hazards map was developed for the test site. This map is based primarily upon a lineament (linear feature) analysis of Landsat satellite data. Other data used were paleochannel location data, resistivity data, and information from surface and underground field checking of the lineaments and ground control problems in the mine. Lineaments proved to be reliable indicators of hazardous areas, although the type and degree of hazard varies with different lineament trends and the presence of other conditions such as lineament intersections and intersections with other geologic structures or with paleochannels. Lineaments were observed to match faults, joints, and/or joint trends in the area. The paleochannel data, derived from drill hole data, provided basic information about potentially hazardous areas in the mine by suggesting where paleochannels could cause instability in the roof rock. The ground control problem data served largely to define the relative degree of hazard associated with lineaments and the types of hazards encountered in the mine. Resistivity data helped confirm the presence of fractures where they were expected to occur both from surface geology and from the lineament data.

You may rest assured I will use my best endeavours to promote the interests of the Institute in every way that lies in my power. In reviewing the work of the past year, it is a matter for congratulation to find the Institute in a position at once so healthy and robust, and that notwithstanding the acute depression which has prevailed in the mining industry.Owing to deaths or departures from the colony, the names of six members have disappeared from the roll of membership, but you will be pleaed to learn that several new members have been elected, the register now, showing 56 Members, 25Associates and 2 Students. A complete record of the papers read and the discussions that took place will be found embodied in the splendid volume of Transactions which has just been issued, and which I am sure will be welcomed by mining engineers in all parts of the world.

The environmental impact of solid waste materials is closely linked to their potential to produce a hazardous leachate once deposited in a landfill. This potential is conventionally assessed with simple laboratory batch leach tests, which find more and more frequent application also in the minerals and metals industry. Such tests are intended to help distinguish between high and low risk wastes, but are completely unsuitable to allow quantitative prediction or modelling of the long-term leachate generation potential. In the present approach the leachate generation process is perceived as a combination of bulk convective transport, stagnant zone and inner particle diffusion, as well as reaction kinetic effects. Model equations are formulated accordingly. A modelling frame work, WASTESIM, has been developed at UCT, which allows flexible combination of the model components and simulation of leach scenarios. Quantitative model parameters are obtained from a systematic laboratory study on the waste material in question. The combined assessment and modelling approach is demonstrated with a study on Cr (VI) leaching from a ferro-chromium slag material. Although not straightforward, the approach is particularly useful in determining long-term liabilities in the context of waste disposal sites with considerably more reliability than has previously been possible. Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutions' funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industry's concept of the unwritten `social licence to operate' is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

The testing procedures of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration specify that intrinsic safety acceptance tests be conducted using a standard tungsten-cadmium electrode configuration in the break- flash apparatus. However, in realistic mining environments, other materials may be more likely sources of sparking. Information defining the probability of spark ignition between common materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, lead, tin, cold-rolled steel, and stainless steel is of more practical value in determining ignition hazards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the influence of material on the ignition probability using the breakflash apparatus. By comparing ignition currents or ignition voltages corresponding to a probability of one ignition per thousand sparks to those found previously for cadmium, a margin of safety may be estimated for each material. This report presents the results of an investigation into the influence of disk electrode material on the probability of ignition.

Extensive gold mining activity û dominantly alluvial û has taken place in the Sofala-Wattle Flat district since the 1850s.This work will have located most, if not all, of the visible sources for the gold in current stream systems.Also, there are many gold bearing elevated Tertiary alluvial terraces in the district which may confuse possible gold signals from primary hard rock sources in the streams.Associated element signatures eg As and other chalcophiles, will discriminate non-alluvial signatures but will not necessarily distinguish non gold bearing mineralisation.Both trace elements and conventional gold analyses will dominantly re-identify known occurrences. Conventional BCL sampling is considered misleading as experience from the Oberon area to the south of Sofala demonstrated that BCL sampling was very sensitive û perhaps too sensitive.All occurrences û major or minor û of gold will be detected (Gatehouse, 1992). To improve on BCL sampling, a small, -120# sample with selective duplication was recommended to screen coarse-grained gold anomalism and a program of sampling covering an area thought to be prospective was enacted.Samples returning anomalous Au were analysed in duplicate and if the results demonstrated reproducibility, indicating fine gold only, the sample site was assigned a high priority.It was found that most of the reproducible samples clustered in one area û Spring Gully. The results of this sampling program led to immediate identification and, ultimately, the successful delineation of the Spring Gully gold deposit near Wattle Flat.

The coal mining industry is divided into two distinct economic segments based on Coal Supply Agreements. Coal supply agreements generally fall into two categories, spot or long-term, with the selected contract term being driven by the buyer's market expectations, security of supply considerations, fuel tonnage and quality requirements, and economics. Short-term or spot coal purchases are generally market driven and are highly competitive in today's marketplace. Long-term contracts, particularly those involving captive mines and mine-mouth power plants, are commonly driven by considerations other than economics. These other considerations, such as Reserve Conservation and Resource Recovery, Security of Supply, and Maintenance of Levelized Costs may increase the cost of coal, often needlessly and without benefit to the buyer or seller. The basic economic principles which guide the market driven metals industry and generally guide the spot coal sector of the coal industry should apply equally well to the long-term coal supply contract. The artificial constraints imposed as a result of regulated rates of return should be re-examined and in most cases, abandoned. There are many methods of surface and underground coal mining being used today such as, open-pit, contour, mountaintop, and area mining for surface mineable reserves; conventional, standard continuous and super-section continuous miners, and longwalls for deep reserves; and highwall miners, thin seam miners and augers in between. This discussion is primarily directed to surface mining, however the same principles of least cost mining on a Net Present Value basis must be considered in all cases.

A method is outlined for the analysis of large cores, developed primarily for the purpose of obtaining reliable data on fractured or vugular limestones. Porosity and fluid saturations are determined by a modified Dean-Stark extraction after initially bringing the samples to 100 per cent liquid saturation by a vacuum-pressure method. Horizontal permeabilities on the whole samples are determined in two directions, parallel and perpendicular to the di-rection of principal fracturing. Results are presented for various types of formations. A comparison is made between data obtained by this special method and the method of conventional analysis, and discussion is given of the relative advantages and limitations of each. In view of this comparison a modified method for the analysis of fractured and vugular formations is proposed, which method retains the advantages of the previously outlined techniques but gives promise of speeding up the analysis. INTRODUCTION For many years the greater part of the production in the Permian Basin was from formations of Permian and Pennsylvanian age. While production from these formations is still the predominant production. deeper prospecting has brought to light older formations with oil productive characteristics. Attempts to core these deeper horizons were at first usually characterized by poor recovery. The old rule of thumb, "good core recovery — poor well" was originated and remained in effect until recently. With the advent of diamond coring and the increased efficiency in drilling and coring operations. the old adage has lost its significance. Formations of Devonian. Silurian and Ordo-vician ages were successfully cored with varying degrees of recovery. The cores thus obtained were surprising and in some case; disappointing. Good recovery from these formations led to speculation as to the feasibility of analysis and the meaning of data obtained from conventional analysis. Commercial laboratories were engaged to analyze these cores. and their results indicated that data obtained by conventional methods would be of little value. From visual inspection it was apparent that in many cases the effective porosity for storage of hydrocarbons. and permeability. were contained largely in fractures and solution cavities rather than in the primary crystalline structure of the formation. In other cases the solution cavities augmented the effective porosity of the primary crystalline structure, or fractures enhanced the permeabiilty of the latter so that the formation might respond favorably to acidization and become commercially productive. Since the spacing of the cavities and fractures was often comparable to the core diameter, it was evident that the entire core should he analyzed instead of small fragments. On the basis of these observations, commercial laboratories were requested to devise a system of analysis which would yield data of practical value. Pro- cedures have accordingly been developed which seem to meet this requirement, and to date nearly 12,000 large core samples have been analyzed. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods used, to present typical results for several fractured formations and to compare the data obtained by this special analysis with that obtained by conventional analysis. Certain modifications and alternative procedures are finally suggested to speed up the analysis. CORE ANALYSIS PROCEDURE Fluid Saturations and Porosity The core sample, in segments up to 15 in. in length. is marked, weighed and examined under ultra-violet light to determine the presence of oil saturation. If present, the approximate quantity of oil and its location on intercrystalline, fracture or vugular surfaces is noted. This information is carefully recorded. The degree of fracturing and/or vugular development is also noted. The sample is then placed in a pressure cell and the air evacuated with a high speed vacuum pump. This evacuation is continued only long enough to reduce the pressure to approximately the vapor pressure of water in order not to remove excessive amounts of water. Water is admitted to the cell and allowed to penetrate the sample under atmospheric pressure, filling the pore space initially occupied by air and replacing the small amount of water removed by evacuation. It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives.Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring?It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.There is nothing new about change in the mineral industry, it has been happening for thousands of years and it will continue as long as civilisation exists on earth. One type of change is economic and we are all aware of the rises and falls which occur in the prices of metals and minerals (Figure 1). When these have happened in an orderly manner, and could be predicted and planned for, it has been possible to take advantage of the benefits and minimise ill-effects, but when they were sudden and precipitate, and could not be predicted, the consequences were serious. The extreme example, of course, was the oil price shock of the 1970s which had such disastrous effects on industry and society.Other types of change are social, cultural and political. They have all been important in recent years and will continue to be so in the future.But it is technological change which may well be the most important because its effects are profound and irreversible, and alter irrevocably the way in which we live. So in discussing the mineral industry in a changing world I will talk specifically about technological change.

The value of mineral production in Alabama reached a new high of more than $246 million. 4 percent above the previous record established in 1964. New high values were reported for bentonite, portland cement, fire day, kaolin, miscellaneous clay, lime, crushed limestone, crushed marble, mica. salt, and sand and gravel. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in the production of bauxite and scrap mica and third in the production of native asphalt. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and Slone, the manufacturing of cement, and the production of crude petroleum, which together comprised 85 percent of the total value of mineral output, compared with 84 percent in 1964. The iron ore industry continued to decline. Coal production continued to increase, resulting in the State's coal-mining best year since 1948.

To conserve fresh water resources and comply with environmental regulations, DRDGOLD, a South African gold producer re-treating surface tailings, has transitioned to a fully closed water circulation system. Consequently, the accumulation of contaminants, as well as addition of reagents, has led to changes in water composition that have compromised leach performance and overall gold recovery. A two-sample t-test confirmed a significant difference in gold recoveries between the use of Rand Water, which was used as a benchmark, and untreated process water. Atomic absorption analysis of ERGO’s process water, confirmed the presence of iron, nickel, zinc, and manganese. A study of the effect of the identified contaminants on gold recovery showed that iron, nickel, and zinc have the largest negative effect on gold recovery, with iron and nickel being more detrimental than zinc. Sulphates were shown to have a possible passivation effect, which also influenced gold recoveries, although to a lesser extent than the heavy metals. Calcium, when present in excess, had a positive influence on gold recovery indicating the possible formation of a calcium aurocyanide complex. Lime softening successfully reduced the heavy metal and sulphate concentrations, and the gold recoveries obtained with the treated process water were similar to those as achieved with Rand Water.

William B. Cogswell, member of the Institute since 1872, died on June 7, 1921, at his home in New York City, after an illness of about six weeks occasioned by an infection of the middle car. Mr. Cogswell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cora Brownell Cogswell; a son-in-law, and three grandchildren. His first wife died in 1877. William Cogswell was born at Oswego, Sept. 22, 1834, and was taken to Syracuse by his parents when he was four years old. He attended Hamilton Academy and private schools in Syracuse and Seneca Falls. In 1843, he visited England with his parents and brought back a set of drawing instruments, which led to a series of lessons in architecture under Luther Gifford, the only architect in Syracuse at the time. The boy drew many building plans and one set was used for the old Globe Hotel in Syracuse, erected in 1846 and 1847. In 1848, when only 14, he spent a year with a party that was surveying the route of the Syracuse & Oswego R. R. and relaying the tracks of the Utica & Syracuse R. R. He studied civil engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, for three years, but left that institution in 1852 without receiving his degree. Many years later, in 1884, the degree of C. E. was conferred upon him. During the three years following 1852, Mr. Cogswell served as an apprentice in machine shops at Lawrence, Mass., under the superintendence of John S. Hoadley. About 1856, he was made manager of the machinery department of the Marietta & Cincinnati R. R., at Chili-cothe, Ohio, and three years later became superintendent of the Broadway foundry at St. Louis, Mo. In 1860, in Syracuse, Mr. Cogswell was associated with William A. and A. Avery Sweet in the formation of Sweet Bros. & Co., which later became the Whitman & Barnes Mfg. Co. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Cogswell received a civilian appointment as mechanical engineer in the United States Navy. During 1860 he was located at Port Royal, S. C., having general supervision over the work of fitting up repair shops at five widely separated stations on the Atlantic seaboard and Gulf of Mexico. In this year his genius and resourcefulness were notably shown. He literally launched a naval machine shop, so that warships could be repaired without leaving, and thereby weakening, blockades against Southern ports. The machine shop was assembled by Mr. Cogswell and shipped by boat to Port Royal. There an old whaler was made over for machine shop purposes and Mr.

The diffusivity of uranium in liquid cadmium has been measured as a function of temperature by the capillary -bath technique. The diffusivity measurements were made at 4509 500°, 575º, and 650°C, over which temperature range the diffusivity of uranium varied from 1.3 to 2.3 x 10-5 sq cm per sec. The diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was less than that predicted by the Einstein-Stokes equation. VERY little information is available on the diffusivity of uranium in liquid metals. Bonillal has reported a single measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in bismuth. Measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was undertaken, not only to supply data in an area in which a dearth of information exists, but also because of a need for this physical property measurement in connection with mass transfer studies now underway in the U-Cd system at Argonne National Laboratory. The capillary-bath method used in this work has been successfully used by other workers2"4 to obtain diffusivities in liquid metal systems. Although considerable experimental technique is required to obtain reliable diffusivity measurements, the basic information required is only that of temperature, capillary tube length, the initial and final compositions of the alloy in the capillary tube, and the composition of the bath into which the solute element is diffusing. From these measurements, diffusivities may be calculated using Fick's law. The diffusivity equations are presented in the Appendix. Equations which are often used to predict diffusivities in dilute solutions5 are the Einstein-Stokes equation: D= (kT)/(6pµr) and the Eyring equation: D = (?,kT/?y?zp), where D= diffusivity (sq cm per sec), k = Boltzman's constant, T= temperature ("K), p = viscosity (poises), r = radius of diffusing molecule or species (cm), and A,, Ay, and A, are the diameters of the diffusing molecule in the three axial directions. In this work, the experimental values were compared to the Einstein-Stokes equation. QEMSCAN« technology is a widely accepted automated e-beam technique providing quantitative and statistically robust mineralogical data to the mining industry. It uses X-ray mapping combined with backscattered electron (BSE) brightness to identify minerals in almost any type of geological material (Gottlieb et al, 2000). Besides the modal mineralogy also the liberation, associations, average grain size and other textural information can be obtained. The aim of this study is to test reproducibility of this technique by setting up and running standard tests on different QEMSCAN« systems. Multiple sample blocks were prepared by our standard operating procedure as epoxy-mounted, carbon-coated, polished blocks. The replicates were measured under the same conditions and measurement parameter settings on different QEMSCAN« instruments. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the set of measurements was calculated. Generally the reproducibility of the systems themselves was found to be excellent, ranging between 0.4 and 1.5 per cent RSD. The more significant change in the reproducibility was found to be caused potentially by the sample preparation and variation in the mineralogy of the replicates. The measurement parameter settings together with these variations can account for almost 15 per cent RSD for minerals of low abundance. For analysed samples good results for the main phases present in quantities higher than 2 - 5 wt per cent of the total mass of the sample were confirmed with RSD generally below six per cent. Following the experiments, the parameters having the biggest influence on the performance of the QEMSCAN« and its precision are discussed in detail. The importance of sample preparation procedures and measurement parameter settings is emphasised. It is shown that experience and excellence is necessary for getting the most from the automatic mineralogical methods like QEMSCAN«.
