The paper addresses the design of the Zhong Tiao Shan Company (ZTS) Houma Ausmelt Technology copper smelter in People's Republic of China. The smelter represents the third copper smelter development using Ausmelt Technology, the first large scale (35,000 tpy blister copper) and the first smelter to use the Ausmelt Technology smelting and converting process steps in separate TSL vessels in a continuously operated process. The project will be realised through the combined efforts of ZTS, Ausmelt and ENFI, the Beijing Non-Ferrous Engineering Institute who provided partial detail engineering services in China. Ausmelt will provide the technology licence, basic and detailed furnace engineering packages and additional technical services including cold commissioning support and hot commissioning supervision.

"The Cresson gold deposit is located in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. The deposit is composed of volcanic intrusive rocks and volcanogenic sediments where gold mineralization is associated with veins and cavities within a diatremal breccia.The purpose of the current study was to:1. Determine the penetration potential of the Cripple Creek Breccia.2. Assess the relationship between penetration and gold recovery within the Breccia.Two methods were applied using a cyanide solution containing ultraviolet sensitive dye to elucidate pathways of penetration within the rock. The first involved stagnant soaking of twoinch square pieces within the solution. The second method involved column leaching of ~100kg of Breccia crushed to P80 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Samples were selected at specified intervals to capture the penetration progress of the solution. Photomicrographs and image analysis were utilized to illustrate and quantify the degree of penetration.Results indicated that the maximum penetration for the Cripple Creek Breccia (85 to 97%) due to a porous and permeable groundmass, containing large non-porous lapilli fragments. In addition, ~90% of leachable gold was recovered with only ~50% rock penetration.INTRODUCTIONDye penetration studies were first developed at SGS-Lakefield Research for the purpose of determining the fluid penetration amenability of differing rock types. The method was to place a large rock or drill core in a pan with 1 to 2 inches of a pre-mixed, water based fluorescent dye. The sample was sequentially cut after prescribed time periods to reveal a fresh surface. The cut surface was photographed under long wave ultraviolet light, and the same piece returned to the dye and allowed to sit until the next prescribed cutting."

During the recovery of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead from their sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are generated. A fraction of this gas is captured and transformed into sulfuric acid and liquid SOl and the remainder is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous proposals were made to solve this problem. Hydrometallurgy offers the only valid solution by which elemental sulfur instead of sulfur dioxide can be produced. Sulfur can be easily stored, transported long distances, or transformed into S02 and H2S04 when desired.

The development of the Gubin lignite deposit, located in western Poland is the first mining investment of this magnitude in 30 years. Gubin is the second largest prospective lignite deposit in Poland, with over one billion tonnes of indicated reserves, which would be sufficient for a 2700 MW power plant for almost 50 years. The paper presents select problems related to the mining development of Gubin deposit. Attention has been paid to changes in legal and formal requirements for mining investments that were introduced after the change of Polish social and economic system. The significance of spatial, environmental and social conditionings has been emphasized. Typical attributes of the mine planning process have also been presented. Those include the long time horizon of the investment, uncertainty of external conditions and resulting difficulties in the project?s economic evaluation. Focus has been placed on mutual connections between particular elements of the project and time dependence during the process of their development. Iterative characteristics of the design process have been proven, together with resulting necessity of frequent verification of previous assumptions. As a background for presenting selected problems related to future development of Gubin lignite deposit, the methods of design have been discussed ? the variants method, the empirical method and the method of consecutive approximations. The tools and the possibilities of their use for solving specific problems related to mine design of an open pit have been broadly discussed. The chapter in which the authors relate to the specific problems of Gubin deposit development constitutes the main part of the paper. It depicts the assumptions on which the annual production and the total extraction of lignite during life-of-mine period have been based. The process of mine designing has been discussed, taking into consideration environmental, geotechnical, spatial, social and mining conditions. The criteria for choosing the location of the opening cut and the external dump have been mentioned. In the summary, the present state of mine design progress has been presented, together with some problems that will need to be solved during the next stages of the deposit?s development.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. SOME time ago during a study of impact properties of tempered martensite,1 it was postulated that the consistently good ductility of tempered martensite might be caused by its relatively small and peculiarly shaped ferrite grains. The fer-rite grains of tempered martensite have approximately the same size and shape as the martensite "needles." Thus they form an interlocking mass of needle-shaped grains quite different from equiaxed or lamellar ferrite grain structures. When the common mechanical test methods are applied to steel, variations are often observed in the ductility of specimens that have closely similar hardness and tensile strength values. The ductility so measured appears to be structure dependent. When steel from the same heat has been heat treated to produce different structures with the same hardness, the elongation and reduction of area values from the tensile test and the transition temperature determined by the notched-bar impact test vary according to whether pearlite, tempered martensite, or other structural constituents were produced by the heat treatment. It has been widely recognized that tempered martensite gives a consistently good performance, when tempered to the same hardness as many other structures with which it has been compared. In recent years the isothermal transformation of austenite to specific structural products and the quantitative evaluation of the character of these products with respect to their nature and response to deformation has received considerable attention. The objective of the present study was to pursue somewhat further the dependence of ductility upon structure; specifically, it was desired to ascertain whether ferrite grain structure, including both shape and size of the grains, can account for the consistently good performance of tempered martensite in the notched-bar impact test. It was thought that a simple experiment would indicate whether the ferrite grain structure plays any part in the good ductility exhibited by tempered martensite in contrast to other steel structures with different types of ferrite grains. By determining the impact transition temperature, it was proposed to compare spheroidites having similar carbide particle size and spacing but obtained in such a manner that their ferrite grain structures would be very different. Spheroidite obtained by tempering martensite, with its small, needle-shaped grains, was to be compared with spheroidite from pearlite. If the latter is produced by sub-critical annealing, the ferrite grains correspond to the pearlite colonies. Thus, if the pearlite was not too coarse, the ferrite grains of spheroidite from pearlite are equiaxed in contrast to the needle-shaped grains of spheroidite from martensite. It was thought that the ferrite grain structure of spheroidite from martensite might depend to some extent upon the grain size of the prior austenite. The austenite grain boundaries limit the maximum attainable size of the martensite needles and thus of the ferrite grains in the derived spheroidite. In order to evaluate any possible influence of prior austehite grain size, spheroidites were to be prepared from martensites that had been formed from fine-grain austenite and also from coarsened austenite. As the carbide particle size and distribution were to be essentially alike in the various spheroidites, the difference would be in the ferrite grain size and shape. Thus any marked difference in transition temperature could be attributable to the character of the ferrite grain structure. There are certain considerations in assuming that these spheroidites would be equivalent in all respects except ferrite grain structure, and an attempt was made to take them into account. One of the considerations was the choice of the carbon content of the steel. An approximately eutectoid steel was selected for two reasons. First, the pearlitic structure would contain no proeutectoid ferrite which might complicate the picture by producing a non-uniform ferrite grain structure in the resulting spheroidite. Then, too, the high-carbon content would inhibit ferrite grain growth during the sub-critical treatment. Another factor to be taken into account was the choice of an alloying element to assure a martensitic structure throughout on quenching the impact specimens. Nickel was chosen, because it is a common alloying element and resides in the ferrite both upon its formation from austenite and throughout tempering. The formation of alloy carbides, or even a large solubility of the alloying element in cementite, would have complicated the interpretation by changing the composition of the ferrite .during spheroid-ization. The possibility of temper brittleness was minimized insofar as possible by using a tempering temperature as high as consistent with the 1 pct of nickel in the steel, namely, 1150°F. While it certainly is not claimed that no difference other than ferrite grain structure could exist between the spheroidites, nevertheless, reasonable precaution has been exercised within the limits of steel metallurgy. "La Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier at Port Cartier. Quebec, utilizes six parallel wet grinding open circuit ball mills to grind iron ore concentrate for the pellet making process. In an attempt to improve grinding efficiency, a mix of 605 25 mm (1 in.) and 405 38 mm (1 ½ in.) grinding balls was charged to mill D while the opposite mix was used in all the other mills. Because media costs were higher for mill D, it was necessary to find out if the smaller balls provided a net economic benefit. Therefore, a test program was undertaken to determine the relative efficiency of the charge in mill D compared to the other grinding mills. Mill F was chosen for comparative efficiency measurements.The first problem was to choose a suitable definition of grinding efficiency. In management's view, previous attempts to quantify milling performance using population balance modelling were ineffective because they were unable to relate breakage rate functions to grinding circuit economical in any meaningful way. Work index analysis was also not favoured because of a number of complicating effects, including the fineness of the feed and product streams and open circuit grinding.It was decided to adopt a recent innovative approach which had been successfully applied to closed-circuit ball milling. For ""functional performance analysis of ball milling"" (McIvor et al., 1990; McIvor et al., 1991), a size criterion is first chosen to define ""fines·' and ~'coarse particles"". In this case 45 microns (325 mesh) was chosen to distinguish fines from coarse material. The relative grinding efficiency of each ball mill environment would then be ~e cumulative grinding (disappearance) rate of coarse (plus 45 nucrons) material per kilowatt hour of energy applied to the coarse material in the mill, divided by the grindability (measured in the laboratory) of the coarse material in the mill feed.Because the disappearance rate of coarse particles is also the production rate of fines, the following equation can be written for the efficiency of the mill environment, Effe, as defined above:"

THE cost of maintaining the production of an operating oil company is one of the most important, as well as one of the most difficult to estimate, of the various items which go to make up the total cost of producing oil. In the opinion of many operators the cost of drilling and developing new wells, whose production takes the place of the loss in production through decreased yield of the old wells, is considered an operating expense, for the reason that the total income-producing power of the property is not increased. The cost of these new wells may be added directly to production expense, or it may he charged to capital account, and this account depreciated to the same extent. In either case, after an oil company is on a satisfactory income-producing basis, the money for drilling new wells to maintain production must be taken from the income of the company. Three factors determine the cost of maintaining production: First, the rate of decline in yield of the wells; second, the cost of drilling and equipping new wells in terms of their production; third, the decrease in initial production of new wells as the property is drilled and gas pressure taken off the sands, etc. In order to check theoretical figures for the cost of maintaining production the writer, with the assistance of Reed Bush and Fred Tough, has compiled the following figures. It is necessary first of all to choose a period of time during which production for the field or territory studied remains fairly constant. The longer the period of time over which this condition prevails, the better. It is also necessary to eliminate or allow for any extraneous condition which may have affected the production returns, such as the shutting clown of a large number of wells, the bringing in of a well of exceptionally large yield, the opening up of virgin territory where the flush yield is greater than will he had from new wells in after years, etc.

Noranda's Altonorte custom smelter, located in the 2nd region of Chile, 20 kilometres southeast of the city of Antofagasta, started operations in 1993. Presently, 1150 tonnes per day of new feed are smelted with an 85% sulphur capture. An oxy-fuel reverberatory furnace produces a 48%-55% copper matte that is treated in 13 ft. x 36 ft. (3..96m x 10.97m) Peirce-Smith converters (two hot and one blowing). Up to thirty percent of the new concentrate is smelted via dry concentrate injection into the converters. This paper reviews the development of the concentrate drying and injection system, and oxygen enrichment at Altonorte from start-up in 1995 to the present time. The relationship between oxygen enrichment and concentrate injection is reviewed from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Concentrate injection has improved the smelter's productivity and added flexibility to the operations. Due to the relatively high matte grades and the subsequent short converting times, maintaining consistent operations was difficult at times and the smelter has gone through a learning curve. Plant operating results and experiences are presented on the impact of concentrate injection in relation to: feed treatment, blowing times, revert generation, slag quality and refractory wear.

South Africa is amongst the 40 driest counties in the world, with extreme weather conditions and beset by both droughts and floods. Coupled with economic growth is an increased demand on water resources and, as with all other industrial developments, mining requires large volumes of water, which is likely to have an impact on the environment. Further to this, the mining industry also realizes that minerals are a non-renewable resource and the contribution to wealth creation from mineral extraction is not everlasting. It serves as an economic boost and careful planning is required to ensure that the legacy of mining is sustainable, and that some of the returns from mining provide continual economic and social prosperity.

If words are to be woven into eloquent meaning, they must be well knit. Upon the relation of words to each other and of groups of words to other groups, known as phrases, clauses, and sentences, depends the success of writing as a means of transmitting thought from man to man. To be understood beyond question, you should know not only what your words denote' but how to build your sentences; you must not only choose your words aright but construct your sentences properly. A sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense; it says something about something. A clause is a subordinate sentence or a sentence within a sentence. A phrase is a group of words without a predicate; it makes sense, but not complete sense. For example: I shall wait for a few minutes before I go home. The whole statement is a sentence; "I shall wait" and "before I go home" are clauses; "for a few minutes" is an adverbial phrase. The large jointed chalk reservoir situated at 3 km depth in the North sea's Ekofisk field is undergoing major compaction after nearly 15 year of oil and gas production. Approximately 150 km 3 of the overlying sediments, mostly shales, are involved in the subsidence. A maximum central subsidence of nearly 3 meters, and a maximum present rate of 45 cm per year has set in motion numerous studies of the phenomenon. Non-linear finite element (FEM) and non- linear distict element (DEM) analyses of the compaction and large scale subsidence were performed. Consistent differences between the continuum and discontinuum analyses were noted. In the latter, slip on hypothetical bedding planes and sub- vertical or vertical faults was allowed, which possibly gives a more realistic simulation of the real processes of subsidence in such a large body of rock. Laboratory studies of the reservoir joints included roughness measurement, JRC and JCS characterization, direct shear tests while saturated in heated Ekofisk oil, and coupled closure-shear-flow tests with heated oil followed by heated sea water. Discontinuum modelling using Cundall's UDEC was performed on representative jointed assemblies (two sets of steeply dipping conjugate joints) to investigate the effect of a major reduction of pore pressure within the deformable matrix and along each joint. It was found that the large shrinkage deformation of the matrix allowed joint shearing to occur despite the constraint of uniaxial strain. Relative mass bulking due to small but widely distributed joint shear possibly explains the observed maintenance of excellent productivity despite large vertical strains in the reservoir.

The complete equations of average linear momentum balance for a single-phase fluid in an incompreisible, homogeneous, porous medium are derived. The derivation begins with Euler's equation of motion for a continuum and uses an integral transform recently developed by Slattery. 7 For steady flow of a compressible, Newtonian fluid, the usual equations of motion result. For transient flow, the space-time description of the pressure is determined in the lowest approximation by the telegrapher's equation. From the analysis a new phenomenological coefficient results which connects the viscous traction to the deriv ative of the linear momentum density. The magnitude of this coefficient determines the velocity of sound through the pore structure in this approximation to the pressure field. INTRODUCTION The modification of Darcy's law of momentum balance for steady, single-phase flow through porous media has been discussed for many years. The first modification was suggested by Forcheimerl who added terms of higher order in the velocity. These can be expected to appear because the underlying microscopic equations of momentum balance are themselves nonlinear in the point velocity field. The Reynolds tensor pvv, which represents the convective flux of momentum density, appears in the momentum balance equation. Only in rectilinear flow (parallel stream lines) does the divergence of this tensor vanish. Since the steady flow stream lines in most porous media are not parallel, nonlinear dependence of the pressure gradient on the velocity should naturally appear. This nonlinearity has nothing to do with turbulence in the ordinary sense of random fluctuations in the pressure and velocity fields. It arises simply because the stream lines converge and diverge, even for steady flows. Klinkenberg2 demonstrated that the permeability coefficient in Darcy's law depends on the absolute pressure or, alternatively, on the density field. However, because he neglected inertial terms of the Forcheimer type, his correction coefficient could not be represented by a constant but tended toward a constant as the velocity decreased. Forcheimer's and Klinkenberg's modifications can be combined in a rigorous way to account for both inertia and slip during steady flow. This will be shown in a future paper. The transient change of pressure in porous media has been described by the diffusion equation.3 This form results from eliminating the velocity and density fields from a combination of the equations of motion in the form of Darcy's law, the continuity equation and an equation of state. Fatt4 suggested that the cause of deviations from the prediction of the diffusion equation for pressure transients lies not in the choice of Darcy's law as the equation of motion but on the existence of dead-end pores which might invalidate the averaged equation of continuity. On the other hand, Oroveanu and Pascal5 noted chat the time derivative of the momentum density must be included in the equations of motion since this measures the local rate of change of momentum density. Their differential equation for pressure is the telegrapher's equation (neglecting gravity). However, their form of this equation predicts that the speed of pressure propagation through the pore structure is the same as that through the bulk fluid. M. K. Hubbert6 attempted a derivation of Darcy's law by volume averaging the Navier-Stokes equations. Since these equations represent momentum balance at a point within an open set of points containing the fluid itself, Hubbert's volume averaging cannot lead to tenns involving transfer of momentum between the fluid and the walls of the pores. O projeto foi padronizado e multiplicado para os demais rolos da LRCC#1 e outras linhas com projetos semelhantes.

"In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

"Phase separation is a frequently occurring phenomenon during solidification accompanied by melt convection, sedimentation or, in the case of two unmixable liquids, a Marangoni driven motion. In order to describe these phase separation phenomena a two-phase volume-averaging model was employed for globular equiaxed solidification of binary alloys and decomposition and solidification of hypermonotectic alloys. The model considers nucleation and growth of equiaxed grains or second phase droplets, motion and sedimentation of grains or droplets, feeding flow and solute transport by diffusion and convection. It allows the prediction of macro segregations and the distributions of grain size or droplet size. Evaluations were made by comparing the numerical predictions with experimental results. For example it is shown that the numerically predicted grain size distribution in a plate casting (Al-4wt%Cu) agrees reasonably well with the experimental analyses.IntroductionModeling of metallurgical processes is a rapidly expanding field and the research activities in the last decades cover a wide range of areas including melt pre-treatment, solidification and subsequent manufacturing routes. Among those activities solidification stands in the central position, because the primary structure of the materials, and even many defects such as porosity, (macro or micro) segregation and inclusions form during solidification. Those primarily formed structures or defects once existing are difficult to be removed or modified by the subsequent material processing.Solidification is a multi-disciplinary field involving thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and solid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and other disciplinesr1 -31• One of the most challenging problems in solidification modeling is the complex interactions between physical phenomena occurring on different length scales ranging from atomic rearrangement over single crystal-melt interactions to heat extraction, momentum and species transport at the system level. Modeling an industry process on atomic scale is umealistic, even on grain scale (e.g. phase field method) it would need another 40 years to be able to model the exact grain morphology in a casting space envelope of 10x10x10 cm3 [ 4]. Therefore, the realistic models for industry process are based on the solution of the macro transport equations (mass, momentum, enthalpy and species) on system scale. The microscopic phenomena such as thermodynamics, nucleation law, crystal growth kinetics and interactions at the liquid-solid interface are considered with simplified models, which are coupled with the macroscopic transport equations."
