[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Navachab Mine experiences difficulties with pit wall stability in certain areas of the mine. The main reason for the instability is the fact that the geology comprises many joints and faults. Blasting, without impacting negatively on the stability of the pit walls, poses a major challenge.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The Samira Hill gold mine represents the first commercial gold project for the landlocked country of Niger in West Africa. It began production in October 2004 as the result of over 10 years of exploration and development work. There were several administrative, social and technical challenges that had to be overcome to realize the successful development of the project. The Samira mine is located on the geological structure known as the ‘Samira Horizon’ which is developing as a promising district for additional discoveries and other mine developments.

In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

IT HAS BEEN KNOWN for many years that alloy steels can become brittle when tempered in the range of 350-600°C, or cooled slowly after heating to higher temperatures. The metallurgical literature reveals that blacksmiths were aware as early as 1883 that water quenching was necessary after heat treatment above 600°C to avoid brittleness. It has also been known for years that the problem is associated with trace impurities; a paper in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute of 1894 refers to the brittle, faceted fractures that occur in steels containing arsenic, phosphorus or sulphur. However, definitive investigation of the mechanism of embrittlement has been possible only within the last decade with the introduction of new experimental techniques to investigate surfaces, especially Auger electron spectroscopy. It is now possible to study in detail the chemistry of surfaces with a resolution of an atomic layer or two, and enormous progress has been made recently in studying the segregation of impurities to grain boundaries by exposing the boundaries by fracture inside the microscope. A clear picture of the processes occurring and their interpretation is now emerging, as was particularly clear at the recent 1977 ASM Materials Science Seminar on Interfacial Segregation held in Chicago in October. Recent research in this area has pointed the way for commercial exploitation of this new knowledge and experimental technology. It is the purpose of this article to trace progress in understanding temper embrittlement and to indicate other areas where control of interfacial segregation and its effects can be important in metallurgical applications.

Reasons are given for using a Boyle's-law porosimeter in conducting core analysis for either routine or research purposes. Among other things, it is pointed out that such a porosimeter permits the measurement of all basic properties on the same sample, thereby eliminating the sources of error inherent in the use of adjacent samples. References are made to investigations of gas adsorption on various porous materials, to show that the use of helium in Boyle's-law porosimeters reduces to negligible proportions the error due to the adsorption or desorption of the operating gas. Two Boyle's-law instruments are described. which permit accurate and rapid measurements of porosity. Schematic sketches and explanation:; are included, along with derivations of equations required in performing precise determinations. Summaries of data obtained during calibration are tabulated and analyses of the data are resented as indications of the precision and accuracy of each device. Comparisons are also shown for measurements made with each of the instruments on the same test pieces and cores. INTRODUCTION An accurate porosimeter, operating on the principle of Boyle's law. is of considerable value in the analysis of cores for either routine or research purposes. This is due primarily to the fact that the measurement of porosity with such an instrument leaves the sample free of contamination by any liquid. When used in conjunction with an extraction apparatus' for determining oil and water saturations, a Boyle's-law porosimeter permits the measurement of all basic properties on the same sample. This eliminates the sources of error inherent in the use of adjacent samples, or the necessity of determining porosity after all other properties have been obtained. Large errors may result from combining measurements made on adjacent samples in order to obtain a single property. This type of error is definitely involved when oil and water are measured with one sample, and the pore vo1ume is measured with an adjacent one. Furthermore, the source of error would be present to some extent, even if the analyst could choose the samples so they were truly adjacent from a geological standpoint. The use of adjacent samples in routine core analysis also necessarily decreases the probability of correlating core properties. For example, the chance of correlating the "irreducible" interstitial-water saturation with permeability, is bound to be greatly reduced by measuring these properties on "adjacent" samples. For research purposes, amplification is scarcely required concerning the greater flexibility of a method for measuring porosity which leaves the core free of contamination by any liquid. Even under those circumstances which require that the core be saturated with a liquid, a previous measurement of porosity with a gas is useful in determining the degree of saturation that has been attained in the process. Furthermore, for comparable accuracy, porosity usually may be determined more rapidly with a gas than with a liquid. This advantage of the Boyle's-law instrument is most outstanding when the determination time is compared with that required in obtaining porosity by evacuation of the core followed by saturation with a liquid of known density. Several porosimeters which operate on the principle of Boyle's law have been described2,3,4,5,6,7 in the literature. No comparison will be attempted between those instruments and the ones described herein. Before helium gas became readily available, Boyle's-law porosimeters were subject to an appreciable error due to the adsorption of the operating gas on the surface of the core solids. There is considerable direct and indirect evidence in the literature to support the contention that the adsorption of helium on porous solids is negligible at room temperature. In discussing the use of Boyle's-law porosimeters, Washburn and Bunting2 stated that "for most ceramic bodies dry air is a satisfactory gas, but hydrogen will be required in some instances. Helium could, of course, be employed for all types of porous materials at room temperatures or above." Howard and Hulett8 obtained evidence that the adsorption of helium was negligible at room temperatures, even on activated carbon ; for the density measured with this gas was unaffected by changes in pressure or by changes in temperature from 25 °C to 75 °C. For oil-well cores, Taliaferro, Johnson, and Dewees" obtained lower porosities with helium than with air, but apparently did not study helium adsorption. From the work of these investigators, it follows that the use of helium in Boyle's-law porosimeters reduces the error due to gas adsorption to negligible proportions. This makes it possible to construct instruments which permit the determination of porosity with (1) a high degree of accuracy, (2) with great rapidity, and (3) without contamination. THE KOBE POROSIMETER The fundamental design of the Kobe Porosimeter was developed by Kobe, Inc., which firm built about 12 of the instruments during 1936 and 1937. Since that time, seven or eight more have been constructed with their permission, making a total of about 20 that have been put into operation.

During the last few years the compila-tion of formation logs from rotary well cuttings has become common practice among petroleum geologists. This meth-od has undoubtedly furnished a great amount of information valuable for both scientific and commercial purposes. How-ever, in spite of its great usefulness it has certain drawbacks, principally in the contamination of cuttings by cavings. In extreme cases this contamination can reach such proportions that it is next to impossible to draw conclusions with any degree of certainty as to the nature of the formations penetrated by the drill. This difficulty was frequently encoun-tered during the development of the Okla-homa City Field. In many cases where Wilcox sand-the most prolific sand of this field-was drilled, the samples con-sisted almost entirely of shale cavings with only traces of sand. In order to obtain more reliable knowl-edge of the formations encountered while drilling it is therefore necessary to resort to more coring, and above all to improve our present methods of coring. With this in mind a study has been made of the results of coring in the Oklahoma City Field, and the present article is mainly confined to a statistical analysis of the relation between recovery, diameter of cores and drill pipe, length of cores and a few other factors. Most of the coring in the Oklahoma City Field was done during the early part of, the development. A total of around 18,000 feet or 0.3 per cent of the total footage drilled before February, 1932, has been cored, and about 80 per bent of the cores were taken in the Simpson formation at a depth below 6,000 feet.

A cobalt/manganese occurrence in Clark County, Nevada was the subject of a site-specific mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1988-90. The study site is in the northern part of the Million Hills (wilderness) study area which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Field work during a period of one week consisted of geological mapping and sampling of workings and outcrops, and geochemical and geophysical surveys conducted on four transects totalling 7,600 ft. Although the concentrations of cobalt (0.1 to 0.5 percent) detected in samples from the fissure zones are within the range of grades associated with world-class economic deposits, the volume of material enriched in cobalt at the study site is insufficient to warrant consideration as a potential resource. Concentrations of manganese, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, barium, and thallium, although anomalous, are too low for economic consideration. At the study site, workings consist of three trenches and nine pits. The exploration history is unknown, and no production is reported.

"Uneven movement of scrap during melting in an Electric Arc Furnace causes operation problems: cave-ins interrupt electric power input. The movement also influences the radiation heat loss to water-cooled side panels and roof. An apparatus has been built to simulate the flow of scrap that may be interlocked. It has been observed that flow starts at the point where the suspended length of the pile bottom reaches the average scrap size, and proceeds in the form of cave-ins, but scrap pieces slide with each other as ordinary granules. After a cave-in, the pile angle usually remains much larger than the normally observed angle of repose. The force balance of a partially suspended scrap pile has been analyzed, and the equivalent cohesion due to interlocking estimated. A numerical model has been developed to simulate the scrap flow. Simulated results agree reasonably with observed phenomena.IntroductionWhen one considers the melting of steel scrap in an electric arc furnace (EAF), it is helpful to understand the movement of the material during meltdown. As industrial experience demonstrates, scrap movement greatly affects EAF operation. In a typical operation, scrap is dropped into the furnace from scrap buckets. The roof and electrodes are swung into position, and power is applied to the electrodes situated over the scrap. The electrodes ""bore"" into the scrap by melting into the steel in the immediate vicinity of the electrodes as they are lowered. If solid scrap pieces gradually slide towards the arc area, the electric power supply can be maintained at a high level, with few interruptions or drastic electrode adjustments. This results in a high production rate and low power consumption per tonne of steel produced. On the other hand, if the charge moves down unevenly, i.e. in large surges, usually called cave-ins, the electrodes must be drastically raised, and power supply frequently interrupted. This is also accompanied by a high level of harmonics induced in the power network, deteriorating the quality of electricity supplied to other users.In addition, the movement of scrap in an EAF also influences the furnace heat efficiency, as the scrap pile is much closer to the electric arcs compared to the furnace wall and roof, and absorbs more radiated heat. Early exposure of the wall and roof to the arcs will increase the heat loss due to radiation, and reduce the service life of the furnace."

This work details the application of a decentralized control strategy to a pilot flotation column working with a two-phase system (water-air). The process is represented by a multivariable system composed of three inputs and three outputs. The selected control variables are the froth depth, the air hold-up and the bias rate, whereas the corresponding manipulated variables are the set-points of the local flow controllers of tailings, air and wash water. All controlled variables are estimated using electrical conductivity based techniques. In particular, the results of a new method for estimating the bias rate, based on the measurement of the volumetric fraction of wash water under the interface, is presented. This method reduces the coupling problem associated to the bias estimation as a difference between feed and tailing water rates. Moreover, the nominal system transfer matrix can be represented by an upper triangular matrix, in such a way that the closed-loop system stability reduces to the stability of the independent control loops. The experimental results show that the closed-loop system performance, particularly that of the bias rate loop, is strongly dependent on the air flow rate, reaching in some cases the saturation point of the controller.

This study intends to demonstrate the engineering application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) that would enable site engineers to prevent the high cost of blind drilling. At the tailing dump located in Zhairem Mining and Processing Plant, the challenge of sheet pile driving is encountered due to the indefinite watertight clay layer deposition depth that serves as a protective layer against groundwater contamination. A numerical model of the soil underlying the tailing dump is built using the existing hole data to compare and confirm the existing geological cross sections for three profile lines along the south and southeast parts of the tailing dump. GPR is employed to investigate the subsoil geological structure and detect the watertight clay layer deposition. On the basis of radargrams tied to the existing borehole data in the numerical model, 21 drill hole locations are suggested to assess and confirm the clay layer depth along profile lines at the tailing dump. The drilling results of the suggested holes confirmed the expected depth of the clay layer. It is concluded that GPR is a practical and economic subsurface mapping method that can prevent the high cost of blind digging of the ground and orient the drilling operations effectively.

A number of theoretical papers have been published outlining the use of electronic detonators to limit peak particle vibrations levels, but few empirical studies have been undertaken and even fewer examples have been published of the use of such technology in the aggregates industry. This paper gives a summary of the research work carried out at two limestone quarries in the North of England, where a series of blasts were used to compare and contrast the use of electronic and non-electric detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out using the same burden, spacing and decked charge weight loadings. A methodology was established that could be used to reduce the peak particle velocities (PPVs) at two or more specific locations by using single-hole blast vibration signatures in conjunction with specific electronic detonator timing intervals. The initial study concluded that this was only possible if single-hole signature blasts were periodically recorded to establish the shape of the correct vibration envelopes as properties were approached. These wave envelopes could then be used as the basis for choosing the specific electronic detonator timing intervals to give the lowest PPV for the properties or locations concerned. This methodology was then used in the second study to access a large volume of aggregates adjacent to a working railway tunnel. The financial benefit for the company was to convert these additional tonnages of rock from being a resource to an exploitable reserve. The project involved careful blast design and the instrumentation of a number of boreholes to enable the results of blast monitoring exercises to be compared with predicted PPV results. The iterative process involved the vibration results being uploaded into æBlast LogÆ (an expert blasting database system developed by the Blasting and Environmental Research Group at the University of Leeds) and analysed to produce predictions ready for the next blast.

Corrosion testing was performed in white liquor from a Brazilian Kraft mill. Specimens of duplex stainless steel (DSS) and lean duplex (LDSS) were exposed at 170 °C for 30 days to simulate conditions of the digester. Corrosion rates were determined from weight loss measurements. After this exposure, the corrosion products formed on the steel surface was characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with EDS, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). EBSD can be used to quantify of basis balance phases in DSS and LDSS. General corrosion rates for UNS S32304 LDSS were higher than the UNS 31803 DSS in industrial white liquor at 170 °C for 30 days. XPS and XRD analyses indicated that the film formed after the immersion test may be consisted by Fe and Cr oxides and sulphides.

Zinc crystals were deformed in simple shear and it was found that anisotropic strain hardening occurred in which the inactive slip systems were hardened more than the active system. The formation of dislocation barriers by dislocation interaction was discussed as a possible explanation of the hardening of the latent systems. STRAIN hardening which accompanies slip in a metal crystal is not limited to the slip systems actively contributing to the plastic strain. There is also a strengthening of the latent slip systems which are crystallographically equivalent to the active system. In the case of aluminum deformed in tension, Taylor and Elam1 found that plastic flow on one set of octahedral planes caused either the same or a slightly greater hardening on an inactive set. Similar results have been obtained for crystals of a brass2 and of Cu-A1 solid solutions.3 Experiments by Rohm and Kochendorfer4 indicated that the hardening of the active system exceeded the hardening of any latent system for aluminum crystals deformed in shear. On the other hand, strain hardening in zinc and cadmium crystals tested in simple shear at —196°C was recently found to be greater in the latent than in the active slip direction." When the strain direction was shifted during testing to a direction 60" from the original, a higher stress was required for glide to continue than would have been needed for flow to proceed in the original direction. The relation between the hardening of active and latent systems must be complex, depending upon the relative orientations of the systems and upon the experimental techniques used to deform the crystal. A detailed knowledge of the hardening produced in latent systems would be valuable in choosing between possible dislocation models of the strain-hardening process. The experimental data now available are incomplete and even contradictory. The present study was undertaken to provide quantitative information regarding the relative amount of hardening of active and latent systems for a particularly simple case. Zinc crystals were deformed in simple shear along one of the three crystallographically equivalent directions [250], [1210], and [1120] in the slip plane, and the relative hardening produced in each of these directions was compared. Experimental Procedure and Results The single crystals of 99.99 pct purity zinc used in this investigation were grown from the melt in the form of 1 in. diam spheres. Shear specimens were acid-machined from the crystals by a method which has been described previously. The gage section of the test specimen was a cylinder having a height of 1/8 in. and a cross-sectional area of approximately 1/3 sq in. All specimens were machined with the axis of this cylindrical gage section aligned with the [0001] axis of the crystal. An innovation in the design of the shearing apparatus for these tests was the provision for a rapid shift in the direction of the applied stress from one slip direction to any other slip direction lying in the same slip plane. Aragonite was synthesized in addition of Mg2+ ion and SrCO3 seed by carbonation process, and the best condition and mechanism of the synthesis was studied by analysis of continuous pH change, ICP, XRD, and SEM. As MgCl2•6H2O addition increased, aragonite phase increased at condition of CO2 flow rate of 100 mL/min and stirring rate of 250 rpm. It was the dissolution of Mg(OH)2 that determined overall reaction time. As SrCO3 seed addition increased at 0.2 mole MgCl2•6H2O, the amount of aragonite increased and the aspect ratio was from 5 to 9. And it was thought that Mg2+ ion prohibited calcitetransformation of aragonite formed by SrCO3.

The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.
