When the Paulsens operation was poised to be placed on care and maintenance, Bill Beament and the rest of the Northern Star Resources (NSR) team capitalised on the opportunity to send the Ashburton region’s only operating gold mine into the record books.A three-stage strategy was devised by NSR to pay off the acquisition and maximise the return from the operation. The first stage was to mine the 55 000 oz mine plan and pay off the cost of the acquisition, then maintain profitable production beyond the seven months and re-establish a mine life. The second stage involved an early commitment to a 220 m long diamond drill drive being placed in the hanging wall of the orebody from which the extensions of the orebody could be further explored, allowing the second stage of the plan to come into effect and extend the mine life by converting Inferred Resources into the mine plan. The third stage of the initial plan was to utilise this drill drive and continue to drill deeper holes beyond the current limit of drilling in the ore zones to extend the orebody and increase the mine’s life.With an ever growing desire to further expand, the young company took on the bold move of establishing its own mining services division. A critical element to the success of this was ensuring that the right people were recruited with the appropriate specialised skill sets.Aligning common goals amongst all NSR team members, from the board and senior management to the work force on site, was critical to integrate the new and driven direction that Paulsens had adopted. It was essential to change the focus and a shift in all employees’ attitudes and values from a mine that was all but down and out, to a site that wanted to be kicking some serious goals.Teaming together a passionate and driven leader with a strong allied workforce was always going to put NSR in the best position possible to make Paulsens the success story that it now is. "Deep foundations utilize the varying soil conditions to provide the most cost-effective or practical scope for a given jobsite. Once the scope has been determined and the engineering applied, the element can be installed and tested to determine if it is suitable. QA/QC programs are vital for the assurance that the element designed by the engineer has not only been properly constructed but that the design assumptions are confirmed. The two deep foundation elements referenced are drilled displacement piles (DDP) and micropiles. Each of these elements allows for large loads to be distributed deep into the subsurface geology. Having the technology and ability to monitor the tests in real-time can be beneficial to a contractor in determining if the design is adequate or if adjustments need to be made on future piles. The proper QA/QC guidelines for installation and monitoring need to be in place to ensure that an accurate interpretation can be made on the pile. This paper discusses the typical testing and the positive results that the author has encountered using the latest advances in strain analysis.KEY TERMSDrilled Displacement Piles:A deep foundation system that has the ability to shed load into the geology through shaft resistance as well as tip resistance, similar to drilled shafts. This pile element is unique in that it has a consistent pile section and thus a consistent modulus of elasticity.Micropile:A deep foundation system used in applications where the foundation lies over material not suitable for a spread footing and the ideal soil stratum is deep below the foundation. Micropiles will have two different cross-sections consisting of a cased section and an uncased section. For this reason, this pile type requires additional analysis when computing stress-strain relationships.Geokon Strain Gauges:Instrumentation such as Models 4911A-4911 Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges ( known as Sister Bars) are designed to be embedded in grout and calculate loads based on the change on grout strain over a period of time.Stress:A pile element is under a compression (axial loading) load when a force acts along its axis and is normal to the plane of the section. The corresponding stress the pile is experiencing is described as a normal stress. The stress is obtained by dividing the magnitude of the load distributed over the cross-section by the area of the pile cross-section, as shown in Eq. 1."

Dewatering is a major operational cost at sane mines. Under certain conditions, costs associated with water disposal may continue beyond the productive life of the mine. For mines with mineralized waters, this is of special concern. Since 1974 experience has been gained from the examination of a number of closed underground metal mines that exhibited drainage problems. It was observed in certain cases, that had appropriate steps been taken prior to closure, that the resulting drainage problems could have been largely avoided. The pre-closure steps would have involved alteration to the "plumbing system" of the mines: i.e., the drifts and crosscuts interconnecting the workings of the mine. This could have best been accomplished by the placement of bulkheads and/or selective drifting. In addition to reconfirming that hindsight is 20-20, a lesson learned from these case studies shows that a relatively simple hydrologic evaluation prior to mine closure may avoid a troublesome and costly drainage problem.

IN the course of research on semiconducting inter-metallic compounds, it became necessary to obtain gallium metal of greater purity that that available commercially. Several methods were considered for further purification, including acid leaching,' fractional crystallization,' and zone-refining.3-5 The method of fractional crystallization was discarded as being equivalent to zone-refining in purification but inefficient in material and time. Both acid leaching and zone-refining were tried, and the method finally adopted is a combination of the two. The acid leaching technique has been reported' to produce gallium in which no impurities are detectable spectroscopically. Although this method is very effective in removing oxides and surface contaminants, semiconducting material made of gallium subjected only to leaching indicated little reduction in the concentration of metallic impurities. Zone-refining, however, appears very effective in removing trace metallic impurities, but comparatively ineffective in removing the surface oxide film. Consequently, the method evolved consists of acid leaching to thoroughly clean the surface, followed by zone-refining to remove metallic impurities. The low melting point and relatively high thermal conductivity of gallium introduce some difficulty in maintaining frozen and molten zones in zone-refining. To accomplish this, it is found necessary to reduce the effective ambient temperature by circulating ice water in coils about the regions that are to be kept frozen, while heat is supplied to the molten regions by resistance coils. The power supplied to the heating coils is regulated by a constant-voltage transformer and a variable autotransformer. Both heating and cooling coils are mounted on a transite base. The gallium ingot is held in a closed pyrex tube sliding inside the heating and cooling coils, the reciprocating method of Tanenbaum et al. being employed to move the molten zones through the ingot at a rate of 2 in. per hr. This apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The results of a spectroscopic analysis f a zone-refined ingot, as well as of the material as-received and after acid leaching, are shown in Table I. The ingot was 32 cm in length, and received 37 molten-zone passes, the molten zone being about 4 cm long. The only impurity found was lead, the following elements being reported also as checked but not found in the pure material: Al, Sb, As, Ba, Be, Bi, B, Cd, Ca, Cr, Co, Cb, Cu, Ge, Au, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pt, Si, Ag, Na, Sr, Sn, Te, Ti, W, V, Zn, and Zr. There thus appears no indication of pickup of Al, Mg, or Si from the pyrex boat as reported by Zimmerman' in his fractional crystallization. Thus it appears that definite removal of lead from gallium occurs during the zone-refining process. It also may be concluded that a more sensitive analytical procedure than spectroscopy is required to evaluate quantitatively the purity of zone-refined metals. One such procedure which is proposed for use in the near future is the measurement of very low temperature resistivity. Although this will not identify the impurities present, it offers a very sensitive check of total impurity. This study of engineering education arose out of the action of a joint committee on engineering education, representing the principal engineering societies. The committee had gathered so much material that it decided the work could best be carried out by some one trained in applied' science, who would devote his entire attention to the study.. The Carnegie Foundation therefore asked Prof. Charles R. Mann, of the University of Chicago, to undertake the work. After making a thorough study Prof. Mann has made a most comprehensive report. In it he says: The engineering schools of the United States began their work upon a definite teaching plan and one that had at least pedagogic consistency. But during the past half century the course of study has been overlaid with many special studies intended to enable the student to deal with the constantly growing applications of science to the industries. As a result, the load upon the student has become so heavy that there is a feeling that the students fail to gain a satisfactory grounding in the fundamental sciences and do not fulfil the expectations of engineers in d manufacturers in dealing with the practical problems with which they are confronted on leaving school. At present 60 per cent. of those who enter the schools fail to graduate, still many of them persist in engineering and make a success of it. It is evident, therefore, that the present systems of admission are not satisfactory. If a group of schools will take up the careful study of their entrance systems and experiment with objective tests and records of the students' youthful interests and achievements, the percentage of elimination can be reduced to at least a fourth of its present size, with an enormous saving of time, energy, and money for both student and school. The number of required credit hours per week should be less than eighteen, preferably sixteen. The few experiments that have been made indicate that college students do their best work when not more than five subjects are studied at a given time.

Our recent achievements of rare earth separation technique[1,2] and new process idea for rare earth magnet recycling[3] are reviewed, (1) Binary chloride mixtures of rare earths were separated by a new selective reduction-vacuum distillation process. According to our experimental results, apparent separation factors were 8.1 for the Pr-Nd chloride mixture and 570 for the Nd-Sm chloride mixture. These values are much higher than conventional solvent extraction methods. (2) A study of recycling process of magnet sludge was carried out. The rare earths in the neodymium magnet sludge were extracted by chlorination with FeCI2, An activated carbon was used as a de-oxidation reagent Metallic iron in the sludge was not chlorinated because the iron monochloride is not stable, The extracted rare earth chlorides were easily separated from Fe-alloy and the excess of FeCh by vacuum distillation, 96 % of neodymium and 94 % of dysprosium in the sludge were extraeted into chloride phase, By the vacuum distillation, a mixture of neodymium and dysprosium trichlorides of 99.2 % purity was recovered, On the other hand, the rare earth chlorides can be converted to the corresponding oxides by a pyrohydrolysis reaction accompanied by a formation of HCl gas, The HCI gas can chlorinate metallic iron to FeCh, Therefore, a new recycling process for rare earth magnet waste can be realized as a chlorine circulation type process. During the process, only carbon and water are consumed and there are no toxic pollutants, Moreover, the obtained rare earth oxide can be directly used as raw material in the conventional oxide electrolysis process,

NEW economic forces are at work in the petroleum industry.. In order to visualize these forces and clearly see their bearing on the producer, refiner and marketer, it is necessary to see in perspective the economic evolution of the business. For several decades prior to 1913 the outstanding feature of the petroleum industry was a trend toward integration, culminating in a huge combine, the Standard Oil Co. An important aspect of this integrative trend, however, was its concentration on the combination aid control of refining and marketing, leaving crude oil production, for the most part, to the exigencies. of small-unit competition. It is a noteworthy coincidence that during this era the law of oil and gas was formulated and applied, whereby these substances had to be reduced to possession to establish ownership; and the forces of competition in crude oil production were thereby intensified. It was to the interest of an industry, safeguarded in its control of manufacturing and markets, to have supply stimulated by legal convention as well as by individual initiative in order that the growing demand could be met without interruption. And so over-production of crude oil during this era was no handicap, but rather an aid, to the progress of the industry.

Material used for flame safety lamp gauzes should possess the following qualities: (1) mechanical strength, (2) resistance to corrosion under service con- ditions, (3) a relatively high thermal conductivity, (4) a melting point above the ignition temperature of mine gas. Heretofore, three metals have been used for flame lamp gauzes, namely: steel, brass and copper. While each of these has the requisite qualities to some extent, none of them is an ideal gauze material. Copper gauzes lack mechanical strength, especiall, after they have been heated; brass and copper both have comparatively low melting points so that before the gas ignition is reached the gauze metal is attacked and oxidized under the action of the heat. Steel corrodes readily in damp atmos- pheres and if the lamp stands unused under these conditions for some time, the gauzes become unfit for service. Tests of these three materials have shown that steel offers the highest degree of safety. Manel metal, the natural alloy of nickel and copper, is practically noncor- rodible. Its relting point is approximately the same as that of steel. From time to time it has been suggested that this alloy might be a better gauze material than steel, since gauzes made of Monel metal should have all of the good qualities that steel gauzes possess and, in addition, would not corrode appreciably in ordinary mine atmospheres. One advocate of this use for Monel metal, the International Nickel Co., through their development engineer, Mr. Robert J. McKay, cooperated with the Interior Department, Bureau of ines, to the extent of supplying twelve sets of 30 mesh, Monel-metal gauzes for tests. Those gauzes were made up by the same lamp manufactur- er ho rade the steel gauzes used in the previous investigation. Being made by the same processes as the steel gauzes, these Manel-metal gauzes were needlessly given the same anti-rust coating that is always applied to steel gauzes to prevent any corrosion before the gauzes are used. In previous tests the Bureau of Mines had collected data as to the behavior of steel gauzes. In determining the value of Monel metal as a gauze material, it was planned to obtain similar data with Monel-metal gauzes, and thus make a direct comparison with the steel gauzes. "An investigation has been conducted to describe the effect of grain refiner (e.g.,Ti) or modifier (e.g., Sr) on the microstructure of an Al-11.3wt%Si alloy produced by the Ohno horizontal continuous casting process using a heated mold so as to obtain directional solidification at high cooling rate of 300 to 2000°C/s. Experimental results demonstrated that the directionality of the primary a grain was promoted by the addition of0.2 to 0.4%Ti or by the addition of0.02%Sr, whereas the addition of0.6%Ti suppressed this directionality. Feathery a grains were promoted by the addition of 0.2%Ti, while these feathery a grains were suppressed when over 0.4%Ti (grain refinement) or when 0.02%Sr was added. The addition of Ti also resulted in increased coarsening of the eutectic Si in these Al-1 l.3wt%Si alloys.IntroductionThe mechanical properties of conventionally cast Al-Si alloys can be enhanced through judicious control of the casting parameters, by the addition of grain refiners (e.g., Ti) and by the addition of eutectic modifiers (e.g., Sr).[1-3] The Ohno continuous casting process[4-5] uses a heated mold (maintained at a temperature above the alloy liquidus temperature) to produce a casting with a mirror surface free of shrinkage defects. I HAVE taken the liberty of calling the researches herein mentioned industrial, to distinguish them from those strictly scientific, where every known appliance is used to insure accuracy in determining principles. The industrial researches are made to ascertain wherein we have failed to embody, in practice, the principles which have been fully demonstrated by the more purely scientific investigations. So far the researches have been mostly confined to the conditions of combustion as used in locomotive furnaces, although we have examined, to some extent, furnaces under marine and stationary boilers. The products of complete combustion are gases, and, knowing what we should have, it is at once shown by analyzing the products whether the desired reactions are taking place. In spite of imperfect furnaces, lack of system in the arrangement of grate-bars and exhaust nozzles, the results are not altogether vitiated, because the analyses are not closer than one-tenth of one per cent., as under the present conditions it is hardly possible to collect gas exactly under the same conditions at different times. All of our industrial operations have developed in the past few years so rapidly, nearly all of them paying, that, until within the past three years, comparatively little attention has been given to their economy outside of the profession. Great corporations have not asked and considered the question in earnest, can we utilize our heat so as to produce the same effect at less cost? The applications of heat are so extensive, entering into every branch of industry, the principal power used to carry on metallurgical processes, to conduct transportation, that its economical generation becomes of universal importance; in fact, its economical generation and application is the leading industrial question of the day. It is stated by those who have given the subject much attention, that in our best steam-engines not over 10 per cent of the theoretical value of the fuel is utilized, and upon locomotives it is far less, probably not exceeding under the most favorable circumstances 5 or 6 per cent. In recent experiments made with the dynagraph, in drawing trains upon the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway from Cleveland to Erie, 95i miles, we found the force required to draw a stock train of 709 tons to be 2,498,396,320 foot-pounds, exclusive of the force to move the locomotive itself. This paper is aimed to display the new advancements of blasting engineering done in different mining sites throughout the country, associated to electronic sequencing, energy of the explosive and its impact on the fragmented rock. This document explains how to define and implement selective sequencing in the blasting in order to promote the propagation of cracks, therefore impacting positively the productivity through the use of the LaGrange diagram. The LaGrange diagram is a very convenient and illustrative method to present the dynamic behavior associated with wave and crack propagation (Rossmanith. H, 2002).

"WorleyParsons has used Discrete Event Simulation methods in conjunction with more traditional process models to assess the performance of copper smelting operations. This work was performed to determine the plant capacities and suitability of proposed debottlenecking options including accounting for the planned and unplanned (breakdowns) shutdowns in the various parts of the plant and supply chain. This paper outlines the methods used along with demonstrating the benefits of selecting a feasible option and minimizing capital and operating costs.IntroductionTraditionally for de bottlenecking studies of smelters and other process plants, a mass balance is performed based on continuous operating rates and expected operating hours. Smelters have several points of failure that will restrict, if not take the entire plant offline. By using a more detailed model, validated against plant experience, bottlenecks can be demonstrated and strategies to remove them to increase plant availability and economic.The modeling simulates the plant performance in real time, and by performing enough simulation the expected long run performance of the plant can be estimated. The models have been built using ExtendSim which is a powerful Discrete Event Simulation software package that is ideally suited to the batch and semi-batch processes and events that occur within smelter operating environments. The value of performing this work is that the operational performance of the plant can be assessed ensuring production targets are met, without using excessive capital outlay."

IN two previous papersl,2 dealing with the carbon-oxygen reaction, and the simultaneous content of each, in liquid steel in the furnace, we have made use of the quantity 0[O], defined as the excess oxygen beyond what would be in equilibrium with carbon then present if the pressure of carbon monoxide were I atm,; that is, if [C] X [O] is taken as 0.00222, 0[O] = [O] - 0,00222/[C] where [O] is the percentage of oxygen by weight as measured by the method described earlier.' This quantity 0[O] proves to be substantially independent of carbon content over the range 0.08 to 1.2 per cent, as well as of the basicity of the slag, and is nearly always within the limits 0.015 to 0.025 per cent when the bath is boiling normally and is in what we have termed a steady state. Apparently it must be at least about 0.014 per cent before boiling occurs; but this threshold value seems to depend upon the ease of bubble formation at the metal-hearth interface, hence upon the condition of the surface of the hearth. In any case, 0[O], on the average, changes considerably following any disturbance of the bath, as by addition of ore. The present paper deals with the average changes in ?[O] level following addition of Spiegel or crop ends, or after procedures to promote stirring, or by tapping of the steel from the furnace. The observations were made on a large number of commercial heats, and consequently are subject to the influence of various disturbing factors; the results have the compensating merit of showing the consistency obtainable under the limitations imposed by practical operation. VARIABILITY OF EXCESS OXYGEN IN NORMAL OPEN-HEARTH OPERATION The preceding general statements refer to the average value of ?[O] particularly in heats that are boiling actively; on individual heats, which are less active, there may be a variable time lag between the disturbance and its effect, which complicates the interpretation of what is going on. For instance, if in the normal refining process boiling is sluggish, the slag usually is gaining oxygen from the gas phase above it, or from added ore, faster than it is losing oxygen to the metal; yet when the bath starts to boil vigorously, the opposite condition may prevail for some time. The consequence of this lag is a variation of ?[O], the interpretation of which in a single heat may not be immediately obvious, This condition is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. In Fig, I, ?[O] at the beginning of the test period was near the lower limit of its usual range (dashed lines) in the steady state as a consequence of the lime boil, which had ended about as indicated. This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. "The Louvicourt Mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec has been in operation since 1994. It produces copper and zinc concentrates. The tailings generated from the ore processing operations have a strong net acid generating potential. Louvicourt Mine, a grass root project, was designed for closure with the best available technology at the time of design. In order to inhibit short and long time acid potential generation, sub-aqueous disposal was selected at the design stage. Given the fact that disposal in a natural lake was ruled out up front for obvious reasons related to loss of natural habitat and risks of permitting delays, a man made facility built with dams was planned. This mine includes therefore the first fully man-made sub-aqueous tailings disposal facility built in Canada. The requirement of using sub-aqueous disposal had serious implications on the placement of tailings. This tailings facility located about 9 km from the mine site has been selected based on the available natural confinement, the favorable foundation and hydrogeological conditions. This paper describes the site and the design criteria that were used. A presentation is also made on the placement technique to maximize storage and its impact on the operation of the basin. The performance of the basin, the dams and the decant structures is reviewed.Résumé : La mine Louvicourt, située près de Val d’Or, Québec est opérationnelle depuis 1994. Le parc à résidus de la mine Louvicourt, implanté dans un milieu naturel intact, fut doté dès sa conception initiale de la meilleure technologie de fermeture disponible à l’époque, soit la déposition sous couverture aqueuse et ce, dans le but de bloquer le potentiel de génération d’acide à court et à long terme des résidus. Etant donné que la déposition dans un lac naturel fut mise de côté dès le départ pour des raisons évidentes reliées à la perte d’habitats naturels et au risque d’introduire des délais dans l’émission des permis, un étang artificiel délimité par des digues a été conçu. Cette mine fut donc la première au Canada à être dotée d’une installation anthropique de disposition des résidus sous une pleine couverture aqueuse. L’exigence d’une déposition sous couverture aqueuse a eu des implications sur le mode de mise en place des résidus. L’emplacement de l’installation de gestion des résidus a été choisi en un lieu situé à environ 9 km du concentrateur sur la base du confinement naturel disponible et des conditions hydrogéologiques et géotechniques favorables. Cet article décrit le site et les critères de conception utilisés. Une présentation est faite sur la technique de mise en place utilisée pour maximiser l’entreposage et son impact sur l’opération du bassin. La performance du bassin, des digues et des structures de décantation est également revue."

At the Barrick Goldstrike processing facilities in northeastern Nevada, sulfide ore is pressure-oxidized at a temperature of 440° F and 420 p.s.i. in six autoclave circuits. The low pH, high temperature, and abrasive characteristics of the oxidized slurry present many new and unique maintenance challenges. To meet these challenges, the Barrick Goldstrike autoclave department formed a reliability group in August 1998. One of this group's critical missions is to reduce both maintenance costs and unscheduled downtime through the application of predictive maintenance technologies and Reliability Centered Maintenance Analysis. This paper discusses some of the successes of the reliability program at the Barrick Goldstrike autoclave.

The Marine Mining Technology Center (MMTC) was authorized by an act of the United States Congress in 1996. The act established several marine minerals research centers in the U.S., including one at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska MMTC is funded through the Minerals Management Service of the Department of the Interior and concentrates its research in the Artic seas region. Recent research projects at the MMTC include, among others, a geographic information system (GIS) application to the gold placer deposits offshore Nome, Alaska, a marine gold placer reserve definition model using a neural network, and development of an expert system model for submarine tailings disposal (STD) planning and decision-making. Although geostatistics remains the most prevalent method used today for ore grade estimation, researchers have made numerous improvements over the years for accurately predicting grades of ore using various other estimation techniques. As a result, the neural network has recently emerged as an alternative to geostatistics for grade estimation purposes. A neural network is a non-linear, model-free estimator that is well-suited for noisy and/or sparse data environments. Neural networks perform best with non-linear spatial data, contrary to the stationary assumption of ordinary Kriging techniques. In the marine placer ore reserve definition model, the neural network technique was used to estimate placer gold reserves offshore Nome. This study demonstrated the utility of neural network modeling over other traditional ore reserve estimation methods, especially for high cut-off grades. Some of the relevant issues of neural network modeling were also addressed in the study. In testing, the neural network produced results that were close to those from geostatistical techniques including Kriging, polygon, and inverse distance methods.

SUMMARY A review is presented of the state of development of high pressure water jet equipment and of large impact hammers for rock tunneling. Information from the U.S.S.R. is based on published literature and three personal visits. Applicable papers which were presented at the International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology in Coventry, England in April 1972 are reviewed. Data are presented on continuous jet systems, pulsed water cannons, and hydraulic-powered impact hammers with respect to the specific energy of rock breakage and potential application in tunneling machines. INTRODUCTION It has been estimated that the cost of underground excavation during the period 1970-1979 in 15 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be over $54 billion, an increase of 104% over the period 1960-1969. It is expected that 55% of the tunneling construction will occur in hard rock (Ref. 1). Present tunneling machines are generally limited to soft and medium-hard rock. When used in hard rock, the cost of replacing mechanical cutter bits is high.
