IN his review of developments in 1943, Gilbert Seil, Chairman of this Committee on Reduction of the Ferroalloy Ores, tabulated the consumption of the alloying metals in relation to the steel production of that year. The processes and fluxes of a cast iron foundry plant located in the North of Italy were analyzed in order to determine the amount and kind of wastes produced from the different activities. The main fractions are the molding sands, furnace muds and powders coming from the dust abatement plant, the exhaust lime, the furnace refractory, the metallic shotting and the sludges and powders coming from the dust abatement plant of molding lines for a total production equal to 800 t/d. All wastes were sampled and particle-size and chemically characterized to evaluate the best recycling or reuse solutions. Wastes were sieved and divided in three categories according to the particle-size dimensions: below 0.1 mm, between 0.1 and 0.6 mm and above 0.6 mm. The fraction above 0.6 mm dimension underwent magnetic separation to recover and quantify the potentially available iron fraction. The fraction between 0.1 mm and 0.6 mm was chemically characterized in order to understand if it could be fed to the sand regeneration plant. The below 0.1 mm fraction was characterized to evaluate the following recycling and reuse solutions: additive for molding sands and/or raw material for the concrete industry.

THIS discussion is based on statistical manipulation and evaluation of operating data from several commercial blast furnaces which include rather wide variations in practice. We are concerned here mainly with the effect of manganese on sulphur elimination under operating conditions in commercial blast furnaces, but this effect can be outlined more clearly by including certain other variables such as silicon in iron and slag basicity, which are all in part interrelated. Real progress in understanding all of the smelting-zone reactions in this process requires more laboratory studies of slag-metal melts similar to those in the blast furnace, with careful control of oxygen pressure. Such experimental work is very difficult, however, and in the meantime, with the present scarcity of more fundamental data, such statistical trends and correlations as can be obtained from commercial furnace operating records may help in choosing laboratory test conditions as well as adding to our knowledge of operating procedures. We do not know just why the furnace data are apparently so irregular that statistical treatment of large numbers is needed to obtain accurate trends. It is partly caused, no doubt, by the many simultaneous variables present, but there are perhaps also such factors as: (I) the con- tinual swings up and down so characteristic of the process; (2) difficulty of accurate sampling of co-existing phases, as well as (3) the presence of both equilibrium and rate factors as a result of the fast driving of the process. In desulphurization, for example, the flow of thin layers of slag and metal over solid coke surfaces, plus the contact between droplets of iron falling through the slag layer in the hearth, would lead one to expect a close approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, most of the critical part of sulphur removal may occur in a short time and distance below the tuyeres with perhaps an accompanying decrease in oxygen pressure and the concurrent reduction of much of the silicon and manganese, so its degree of approach to equilibrium may be quite variable. Probable Chemistry of Desulphurization Since there is little evidence that sulphur atoms in the iron solution are aasociated to any appreciable extent in molecules such as MnS, the transfer from slag to metal and back again can be written:* (FeS) ? [FeS], [I] hence the following reactions seem most probable in the slag phase, (FeS) + (CaO) ? (CaS) + (FeO), [2] and, (FeS) + (MnO) ? (MnS) + (FeO). 131

Mortar is a widely used building material and has its application in buildings in extremely vulnerable environments and susceptible to degradation, such as facades. The objective of this work was to evaluate the loss of mechanical resistance to compression and flexure and the loss of mass of the mortars with effluent sludge from paper industry, when exposed to saline environments. The specimens were done with 0, 5, 10 and 15% of incorporation in lime paste and subjected to saline mist equipment that sprays salt solution in cycles simulating natural degradation conditions using literature data. It can be concluded that mortars with a15%incorporation obtained a significant loss of mass and a decrease in their mechanical resistance, which impairs their use in civil construction and influence in other properties of the material, with a level of incorporation of 10% the results within Brazilian standards.

One of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing or the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann.' Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserves especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by P ALo plotting So = 1/A0 as a function of eo = ALr,o where A0 and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors.7'8 It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented P by plotting the average true stress, S = 2P as a function of 6 = q' = log —r = log ~9L where P, A, L, S, E, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximin load point to fracture. The construction of such curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain dificulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. "In this paper, the room temperature friction and deformation properties of various polycrystalline diamonds; i.e. aggregates of diamond crystals with a ""binder"" phase of cobalt and a polycrystalline coating produced by a chemical vapour deposition processes (CVD) were studied when softer metallic and ceramic sliders were used. The experiments were conducted· at relatively low sliding speeds (10 mm/min), in a vacuum of 10-5 mbr after having cleaned the specimen surfaces by out-gassing them for about 30 min at 800 °C. As a result of increasing the number of traversals significant wear of the coated diamond by softer metallic sliders (aluminium and mild steel) was observed. With ceramic sliders, it is shown that the multiple traversals result in the formation of wear groove. With diamond silicon carbide, high friction and adhesion lead to significant metal transfer which then pre-empts cumulative deformation of the harder materials. With the diamond-cobalt composite, the friction is surprisingly low, there accumulation of wear debris on the tip of the slider but no permanent transfer of metal and the harder specimen is not damaged even after 5000 traversal.IntroductionPolycrystalline diamond is mainly produced as tool materials for the machining of hard metals and composites. Thus, the sliding friction and wear resistance are amongst the most important properties relevant to those applications.During cutting by PCD the wear mechanism is mostly influenced by the chemical affinity between the tool material and the workpiece. For example, diamond based materials are not recommended for machining ferrous materials because carbon is highly solubie in iron: This leads to the graphitisation of diamond particles and hence a high rate of diffusion wear is observed (Brookes and Lambert, 1982)."

Secondary blast holes are now being pierced in quartzite and sandstone quarries, using multiple hand-operated Jet-Piercing units supplied with oxygen, fuel and water from a compact mobile carrier. A unit of this type, operating in a Canadian quarry, enabled four Jet-Piercing blowpipes to pierce blast holes for two hours without shutdown. The piercing blowpipes used were developed by Linde Air Products Co., a division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corp. The mobile supply carrier was constructed by the quarry from specifications supplied by Linde and modified by the quarry operators for their particular use. Employment of the new self-contained unit, which allows up to four operators to pierce approximately 450 ft of blast hole without shutdown, accelerates rock removal operations. Normally, only two blowpipes are in operation at one time. Large boulders or ledges, which sometimes remain after primary blasting to hamper loading operations, can, in the case of certain hard rock, be prepared for reduction more rapidly with these new units than by any other means. A special feature of the new manual Jet-Piercing unit is the mobile gas and fluid supply carrier. It consists of a standard truck chassis fitted out with four banks of large standard-capacity oxygen cylinders, a steel-holding tank for fuel oil, and a gasoline-driven air compressor and tank for pressurizing the fuel oil tank. Cooling water for the blowpipes is supplied to the unit from a hose extension to the quarry supply line. Feeder lines from the oxygen cylinder manifolds and the oil and water tanks terminate in four sets of take-off stations on the control panel at the rear of the truck. As many as four hand Jet-Piercing blowpipes can be connected to the take-off panel by high-pressure rubber hoses. The hand Jet-Piercing blowpipe used with the mobile supply carrier is a highly portable device which can be manipulated comfortably by one operator. The blowpipe can pierce blast holes at rates up to 60 ft per hour, depending on the properties of the rock. Blast holes can be pierced at any angle from the vertical to the horizontal, making it necessary for the operator to drill from the top of the boulder. Hole diameter is held to approximately that which allows the use of a standard 11/8-in. diameter dynamite. The manual Jet-Piercing blowpipe has these important design features: a burner from which the combustion gases emerge at supersonic speeds (in excess of 6000 ft per sec); a hole-sizing shell which controls the minimum size of the hole and protects the copper burner; and a sliding shield which protects the operator against the steam and spallings ejected from the hole during the piercing. The Jet piercing process has been applied successfully in United States and Canadian quarries within the last several years as an advanced method of "drilling" blast holes.

Digital camera and computer technologies can be used to monitor mine slopes and provide real-time warning of rock falls. NIOSH researchers assembled a surveillance system using low-cost video cameras and computer software from the security industry to test its effectiveness. The system is designed to signal an alarm when motion is detected and to record images of the scene. Masking can restrict motion detection to specific areas within the camera view; sensitivity is adjustable. The time-stamped images provide a record that can help reconstruct and quantify an event. Video motion detection can augment standard monitoring methods to increase safety in surface mines.

This experience demonstrates a fully standardised system can balance the needs of a systematic process across all mine sites and the flexibility for mine geologist to determine and use local properties at each mine; this is done by ensuring two key principals are in place: a single, centrally maintained, system is established and maintained, providing a common set of processes and software across all mine sites the system allows senior mine geologists to review and customise key attributes and product regressions, ensuring site specific data is used in product predictions.The benefits of formal work process and standardisation include health, safety and environment, people and skill development, cost and improved communication. Also product predictions from mine geologists are one of the key inputs into an integrated and dynamic mine to ship scheduling system, optimising the supply chain whilst still managing the product quality. Volume II of this two-part series on Submarine Tailings Disposal (STD) as a tailings management option for coastal and island mines contains descriptions of lesser known case histories. The Misima gold mine (Papua New Guinea) and the Black Angel lead-zinc mine (Greenland) are described in some detail as the best documented cases. Atlas copper mine (The Philippines) is less fully described due to relative lack of documentation. The Misima and Atlas STD systems are working to their design criteria. At Black Angel the system adopted did not prevent contamination for a number of reasons, which are now understood. Two cases are described where STD is being developed. They are the Cayeli Bakir copper mine Turkey), and the Toquepala and Cuajone mines (Peru). There is excellent documentation available for both cases. Three case histories are described where tailings have reached the sea either through beach or river discharge. In one case the STD option has been explored (Marcopper Mine, The Philippines). In the others we explore in hindsight whether STD might have been a viable alternative using the Screening Criteria that this Volume develops - see below. The mines are Bougainville Copper Mine in Papua New Guinea, and Jordan River Mine (Canada). There is potential for STD at all three sites. Finally, the Volume presents Screening Criteria for appraising STD, based on the experience in design, operation and environmental impact reviewed in the case histories.

In the development of commercial vehicles as well as of passenger cars, the effects of vehicle vibrations on operating safety, health and comfort can only be predicted by numerical simulation when appropriate occupant models are available. Such models must be based on human anatomy and have dynamic properties of real humans in order to achieve realistic results. Since human dynamic behavior depend on posture and percentile, the occupant model needs to be adjustable to these parameters with respect to geometry and dynamic properties [1,2]. Dynamic Human Finite-Element-Model CASIMIR CASIMIR is a non-linear, dynamic finite-element-model of the human body. It consists of a dynamic model of the upper torso with head, neck, shoulders and arms as well as of a dynamic model of the lower extremity with pelvis and legs. The most important part is the lumbar area with dynamic non-linear models of the lumbar spine and of back and abdominal musculature. The frequency-dependent characteristics of the intervertebral discs and the effects of muscle activation and non-linear frequency-dependent muscle properties are included. In the latest stage of development, CASIMIR has been equipped with a compliant model of the body surface in the contact areas to the seat. This results in a very realistic transmission of static and vibrational forces into the human body, see fig. 1. Intense model verification and validation has been performed in all stages of model development, starting with validation of small components like intervertebral disc, ending with validation of whole-body-vibrations using measurements of the dynamic mass / mechanical impedance [4]. For an in-detail examination of stresses in the vertebral bodies and discs, a non-linear submodel of the lumbar spine with an increased number of degrees of freedom can be coupled to the whole-body-model, enabling the researcher to examine local effects of vibrations and single shocks on the lumbar materials. [ ] Since it is well known that human dynamic behavior is significantly affected by anthropometric data and posture, CASIMIR can be individualized to the anthropometric status of single individuals or to the mean values for specific percentile groups. Furthermore, posture can be adjusted to the seating conditions applicable to a specific vehicle. Posture modification capabilities include the variation of the lumbar lordosis [3].

This paper illustrates sustainability considerations in copper hydrometallurgy using examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S. primary copper producer. Using the classic Brundtland Commission development of sustainable development, i.e., “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper discusses how copper hydrometallurgical processes can be sustainable. The examples used to illustrate sustainable development and related concepts include: water conservation opportunities in milling and leaching operations; implementing green chemistry and promoting product stewardship in the electrorefining of copper.

"Fire Refined Copper (EI Teniente Three Stars) has been produced at Caletones Smelter of Codelco Chile since almost the beginning of its operations.Due to changing features of the copper market, together with the targets on technical efficiency and productivity, it has become more and more relevant for copper industry to reach both, good final product quality and a proper environmental control.At present, copper refining process at Caletones Smelter takes place in two cylindrical tilting furnaces, where solid fluxes are injected through horizontal tuyeres into the molten bath. (Fig. N2 1)Solid reagents are pneumatically conveyed and injected into the liquid copper bath attaining excellent solid - liquid contact, so the impurities removal efficiencies are found to be high. Same injection tuyeres are used to introduce both oxidising agent (normal air) and reducing agent (reformed gas) into the molten bath. Air or nitrogen is used as conveying gas for solid reagents, depending on the process stage.This pap~r gives a fundamental description of the process and industrial results related to the injection of blend of sodium and calcium carbonates to remove arsenic and antimony, silica and granulated reverberatory slag to remove lead and a mixture of calcium carbonate and mineral coal to reduce the selenium content of the fire refined copper."

"The results and methodology for the optimisation of the zinc flotation circuit at the Matagami Mill using the 6-Sigma methodology are shown in detail while only the base line and final results are presented for the copper circuit. As a result of the six sigma project, the zinc concentrate grade was improved by 2% and the zinc recovery by 3%, with reduced dosage of reagents while the copper concentrate was improved by 2.4%. The process variation in the zinc concentrate grade and recovery was also reduced by over 50%. The main factors contributing to the project success were identified to be improvement in the plant measurement systems, an internal benchmarking exercise and statistically designed laboratory and in plant tests to guide the process improvement. The annual value to Noranda resulting from this project has been estimated at approximately $5 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Matagami concentrator started ore processing from the new Bell- Allard deposit in July 1999. Concentrator performance (grade and recovery of zinc and copper concentrates) was highly variable and work was ongoing to fix the sources of variation. In the mean time, Noranda embarked on its 6-Sigma initiative across the company. The 6-Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology was used in the two flotation circuits to reduce variation and improve performance. The statistical 6-Sigma methodology moves towards identifying and controlling critical process operating variables (the X' s) to achieve customerspecified performance (the Y's). The goal of the methodology is to describe a process in a numerical equation known as the transfer function, given as Y = f (XI, X2, X3.. .), where Y could be concentrate grade or recovery and examples of X's are reagent dosage, particle size, etc. With the transfer function, optimal operating conditions and control tolerances are established for the key X's to ensure the desired Y performance is obtained.Each phase of the 6-Sigma methodology is explained below with examples from the Matagami project."

Effective drainage systems are required for reclamation of mine-disturbed areas to control surface water runoff and avoid excessive erosion. For the conventional structural design approach, armouring material necessary to satisfy the design criteria should not move during the design flood event since displacement would uncover the erodible underlying materials. This paper discusses an alternative geomorphic approach for designing drainage channels and watershed landscape. The approach is based on quantitative studies of geomorphic processes operating in a watershed. A design based on the geomorphic approach replicates the configuration, channel regime, sediment volume and hydrology of natural and mature drainage systems. Movement of some armouring material is acceptable in such an approach because the channels are allowed to mature by natural degradation and aggradation, with erosion rates comparable to the natural environment. The key advantages of a geomorphic approach over a purely structural approach include reduced sizes of armouring material, geomorphologically sustainable landscapes, ?walk-away? or maintenance-free design and reduced liability in the future. The geomorphic approach is illustrated using the example of a coal mining operation in northwest U.S.A. The paper discusses field data collection, design criteria, typical design details, and construction methods.

The gasification reactivity of PC (petroleum coke), strengthened by addition of different potassium carbonate proportions using different grinding medium, was investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results showed that the gasification reactivity of PC not only increased with the increase of catalyst-loaded, but also showed the effective improvement by anhydrous alcohol. The PC was mixed with potassium carbonate [K2CO3] catalyst at 0.5%, 0.8%, 1.0% and 1.5%, and then ground wet with distilled water. The CO2-gasification rate of PC was only 77.35%, 80.55%, 84.07% and 85.88% under the gasification temperature 1100 °C and holding time 120 min, at different K2CO3 respectively. However, when the PC was ground in anhydrous alcohol at the same condition of catalyst-loading, the gasification rate of PC reached 95.43%, 96.63%, 95.50% and 95.61% at the holding time of 108 min, 101 min, 74 min and 35 min, respectively. It was shown by FTIR, SEM and EDX determinations that the anhydrous alcohol used as the grinding medium can further improve the gasification reactivity of PC when compared with the distilled water.
