Nowadays, the development of polymeric materials reinforced with residues of vegetal fibers is becoming popular for application in different segments, from the automotive to the civil construction and furniture industry. Vegetal fiber residues may be used as reinforcement of the recycled polymer materials, for instance, to produce foams to packaging or to thermal and acoustic isolation for green building application. This work is focused on the development and characterization of recycled-HDPE/EVA foam reinforced with fiber residues from babassu coconut epicarp. Firstly, composites based on recycled-HDPE/EVA blend reinforced with babassu coconut fiber were obtained by melting extrusion process. The composites were then extruded in a special single screw for foaming. The foam samples were submitted to mechanical tests, density measurement, DSC, TG, and FE-SEM analysis.

To be competitive in automotive applications, polymer composites must be processable by high production rate processes like injection molding (IM), reaction injection molding (RIM), structural rim (SRIM) and compression molding. With current fiber reinforced composite materials, performance properties are sometimes compromised to make them compatible with these processes. This is done by decreasing the amount and length of the reinforcing fiber and the viscosity and molecular weight of the polymer matrix. Sheet molding composite (SMC) and thermoplastic polymer blends are examples of polymer composites which are cost effective in many applications and meet the high speed processing requirements for automotive parts.

New modern water treatment technologies required for arsenic removal from waste waters contaminated extensively by various background sources from mining, industrial waste, agricultural waste, painting industry and natural geological bed rock system etc. Arsenic is a widely dispersed element in the earth's crust and exists at an average concentration of approximately 5 mg/kg. Arsenic (As) and heavy metals may be released from the mine wastes to the ground and surface water systems, as well as the geological environment due to their solubility and mobility. This research focuses on the effect of accelerated carbonation process for successful removal of heavy metal arsenic anions from artificial waste water and mining waste waters. This accelerated carbonation process is a simple and novel method with 85 ~ 88% removal efficiency. Carbonation has been studied as a process to further improve immobilization of solidified/stabilized waste and granular waste. After successful removal of arsenic anions from solid mining waste and its potential benefits for producing construction materials. Besides, the industrial and urban management systems are generating bulk solid mining wastes, and most often dumping them in open fields. To prevent the landfilling with mining waste, many efforts are being made for the recycling of different types of mining solid wastes with a view to utilizing them in the production of various construction materials.

CODELCO is considering the implementation of high-density tailings management at the Chuquicamata mine in northern Chile for its long term disposal plan. To achieve this, CODELCO commissioned the design, construction, and operation of a 70 t/d pilot plant, fed by existing tailings. The testing programme was completed in May 2011, and consisted of laboratory rheological and characterization assessments, pipe loop testing, beaching trials, and analyses of deposition behaviour for solid contents ranging from 57?68% (w/w). This paper describes the characteristics of the pilot plant, the testing programme, the beach trial analyses, and the resulting beach profile predictions based on the stream power theory. CODELCO also used other predictive beach slope methods, such as the equilibrium slope concept, which are not discussed in this paper. The final beach profile for design will be selected after an expert analysis of all methods has been completed.

The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. When the zirconium pressure tube(PT) is in contact with the calandria tube(CT) in the pressurized heavy water reactor(PHWR), the temperature gradient between the inner and outer wall of the PT results in a thermal diffusion of hydrogen(deuterium) and hydride blisters are formed on the outer surface of the PT. Since Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes have a high risk for the formation of blisters during their operation in a PHWR, there is a strong incentive to develop a method for the non-destructive detection of the blisters grown on the tube surfaces. However, because there is little mismatch in an acoustic impedance between the hydride blisters and zirconium matrix, it is not easy to distinguish the boundary between the blister and the zirconium matrix with the conventional ultrasonic methods. This study has focused on the development of an ultrasonic method to detect the hydride blisters formed on Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes. Hydride blisters were grown on the outer surface of a Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube using a cold finger attached to steady state thermal diffusion equipment. Ultrasonic velocity ratio method as well as conventional ultrasonic parameters with an immersion technique was developed to detect small hydride blisters on the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes.

A new approach of recovering platinum and palladium from electronic wastes by hydrochloric acid leaching followed by selective adsorption on low-cost and environmentally benign biomass sorbent prepared from easily available agriculture waste is suggested. The obtained adsorbents were prepared by a combination of chemical modification and hydrothermal carbonization process with (NH4)2C2O4. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacity of hydrothermal carbonized garlic peel for Pt( ) and Pd( ) was 1.64 and 0.42 mol/kg respectively. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was applied to describe the adsorption process. Kinetics of the Pt( ) and Pd( ) ions adsorption was found to follow pseudo-second-order rate equation. The adsorbents were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Based on the characterization results, a possible mechanism of Pt( ) and Pd( ) ions adsorption with the hydrothermal carbonized garlic peel was proposed. This study provides a promising adsorbent with efficient adsorption property for platinum and palladium recovery from the leach solution of electronic wastes.

This paper reviews the past 18 months of geostatistical work in a coal deposit performed jointly by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners. The objective of the study was to better predict the in-seam sulfur values of the deposit for the purpose of future emission control. Based on initially available 112 DDH information, variogram models were developed for Sulfur, Ash and Thickness for the entire deposit. The deposit was then kriged using 333 m x 333 m (1000 ft x 1000 ft) panel size. The estimation variance information obtainable from geostatistics was next utilized to improve the development drilling activities that were underway. The results of this effort are presented in this paper. In addition, this paper describes (1) the reasons for preferring kriging over the conventional isopachs, (2) the results of empirical validation of the kriged estimates using 19 additional DDH information, and (3) up-to-date experience on the use of conditional simulation of the same deposit for the future emission control strategy development.

FOR the purpose of this discussion, let us consider that the Rocky Mountain region covers the area in the seven Mountain States, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and before we discuss the needs of these states, let us define Industrial Hygiene. Industrial Hygiene is that branch of preventive medicine concerned with the protection of health, improvement of efficiency, and prolongation of life of the industrial worker; in short, adult health conservation. It includes in its broad meaning not only the prevention of occupational diseases, such as silicosis, lead poisoning, cadmium poisoning, and many others, but such relative problems as overcrowding, fatigue, and personal and mental hygiene; exposure to abnormal temperatures, pressures, and humidities; ventilation, heating, and lighting. It is a science which requires the combined activity of medical personnel (doctors and nurses), engineers, and chemists to evaluate the exposures and determine the means of eliminating the hazard. The engineer surveys the workplace, takes air samples at the breathing level of the workman, and analyzes the work exposure. The chemist determines in his laboratory the exact amount of toxic material collected in the sample, which represents the exposure of the workman. The doctor must diagnose the occupational disease, recognize its cause, and evaluate the disability. Together, all three must correlate the data obtained and devise efficient methods, medical or engineering or process changes, for controlling or minimizing the dangerous condition and for studying the effectiveness of these measures. The plant doctor, in addition, must aid in the readjustment of the incapacitated worker and provide facilities for prevention. Industrial hygiene, however, is of no avail without the understanding co-operation of management.

This annual report deals with a multi-faceted research effort to increase mine electrical system safety. The project can be broken down into six task areas. Task one deals with the development of tests and instrumentation to perform these test- that are designed to detect incipient faults on mine power systems. This program also encompasses evaluation of the tests and automation of data collection and recording using a microprocessor. Task two concerns the prediction and suppression of mine electrical transients. This program involves digital simulation and suppression hardware evaluation. Task three deals with the reliability and fail safe assessment of various components of the mine electrical system including both the protective system and bulk power system components. Task three deals with theoretical analysis, laboratory testing and in-situ testing in coal mines of power system devices. Task four is an effort to design an optimal mine electrical distribution system. The initial effort is along the lines of refining analytical tools such as the load flow model. Task five is an attempt to optimize the selection of molded case circuit breakers makes or models on the basis of total annual cost. Task six assesses the availability of equipment to satisfy existing federal regulations.

Extraction of sill pillars has always been problematic because of high risk of seismicity and rockburst. Depending on a number of factors, a sill pillar can undergo different failure modes and cause problems in the mine. Of these, sudden and uncontrolled failure of part(s) of the pillar leading to highenergy seismic events and rockbursts is a main concern because it is not possible to predict the location and time of a rockburst apart from its potential to cause extensive damage to the mine structures. To date, a comprehensive technique for sill pillar design and recovery does not exist. Conventional methods of pillar design, such as the pillar stability graph method, are utilized to design stiff sill pillars. In these design approaches, the post-peak response of the pillar-rock system is not considered. This is in part due to a lack of clear and comprehensive understanding of the post-peak behaviour and failure mechanism of sill pillars. In general, the strength of a rockmass is described using a failure criterion. When stresses reach the strength of the rockmass, the rockmass does not necessarily become unstable and knowledge of the loads alone is not enough to assess the instability conditions accurately. In fact, it is not possible to predict instability of rockmass based on the strength/stress ratio alone because instability depends not only on this ratio but also on the loading condition and loading system characteristics. The loading system can dictate whether the sill pillar will go through a stable or unstable failure process. This paper examines the influence of various parameters such as the pillar width to height ratio, the extraction rate, and placement of backfill on the Loading System Stiffness (LSS) and the Pillar Stiffness (PSS). The ultimate goal is to design yielding sill pillars that would yield in a stable manner and will reduce the risk of pillar rockburst. Plane strain finite element analysis is conducted using the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion with elastic-brittle-plastic parameters. Examples are given to demonstrate how to calculate these stiffness values and assess the stability condition of sill pillars. It is found that increasing the rate of extraction increases the likelihood of unstable yielding of the pillar as has been found in other studies. Placement of backfill in a timely fashion in the stopes above and below the sill pillars increases the stiffness of the loading system. This indicates that backfilling of stopes while creating the sill pillar increases the likelihood of stable yielding of the sill pillar.

"The construction or rebuild process in the anode baking furnaces has been modeled with the software Rockwell Arena, in order to minimize the process cost and risk. The case study was focused on the sectional rebuild (""on the fly"") that needs a high coordination of the material inventory, the on-site personnel and the construction/production schedule. Multiple entities and resources were allocated for the different part of the process (in-furnace process, prefabrication, materials transportation, etc.). Logic flow charts and VBA macros were used to simulate the space utilization (including cranes utilization) and interaction with production. MS-Excel output files can show user-friendly results."

"The use of the up-to date light alloys and their development are in the sharp ascent especially in transportation industry. In the last years the use of the magnesium alloys for the various purposes was strongly increased. The aim of present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability and on obtained mechanical properties of AM60 magnesium alloy. The study was also focused on possibility to omit prior homogenisation process which would result in cost reduction. The solidification of gravity cast alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis: in situ simple thermal analysis and simultaneous thermal analysis. In order to reveal optimal hot working conditions the deformation behaviour was studied in the temperature range 200-450°C and strain rates between 0.001-lOs-1. Mechanical properties have been studied with tensile and impact toughness testing.IntroductionIn recent years, the increased demand for magnesium alloys has been mainly driven by the need of automotive and transportation industry to reduce the weight, as this is the most important parameter to reduce the energy consumption. Beside their very low weight in comparison to other metals, the magnesium alloys are characterized by good machinability, corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, and can thus compete with aluminium alloys and for some applications even with steels. Due their decreased workabilty they are typically used as cast alloys, but in recent years also the research of their wrought state has become more extensive [1-7]. Decreased hot workability of magnesium alloys originates from their hexagonal close-packed structure. One of the most popular magnesium alloys with great potential for many applications is AM60 (MgA16Mn), which is predominately used for casting. But its application could be increased if the mechanical properties, could be improved. This can be done by hot working. Namely it is well known that wrought microstructure is characterized by better mechanical properties in comparison to as-cast state. On the other hand due to its low hot workability the homogenization process is required prior hot deformation, which results in increased production costs. Thus the aim of the present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability of AM60 alloy in order to improve its mechanical properties and to check the possibility of producing near-net-shape casting products omitting homogenisation process by employing small additional deformations after casting. Within the framework of this research the solidification of gravity cast AM60 alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis."

"Using propidium assay and flow cytometry, we examined how silica exerts its toxicity toward phagocytic cells employing the human neutrophil as a model. This toxicity appears to be associated with calcium bound to silica. Once the silica with calcium is phagocytized, the extra calcium causes the death of the cell. Using ""Ca we found that 6 to 10% of millimolar calcium is bound to milligram amounts of respirable-sized silica (diameter of 5 µ.m or less) at physiological pH. If the silica particles arc coated with an organosilanc (Prosil 28). calcium binding is decreased by 60% as is cell death. Pretreating with INDO IAM (a chelator of intracellular calcium) reduces the cellular death by 80%. Nonfibrogcnic particles- polystyrene beads or coal dust-produced 10% or less cell death in a 4-h period. Silica with no added, external calcium appears to exert toxicity to neutrophils; however, pretreating cells with EDT A decreases cellular death to the level of nonfibrogcnic particles. Chronic toxicity with silica-calcium appears similar to the chronic toxicity in gout where particles cause a cycle of inflammation. c 1993 Academic Press, Inc.Silicosis is an occupational disease caused by the inhalation of fine particles of silica, usually between 0.1 and 5 µ.m in diameter (1). A recent hypothesis explaining silica's toxicity suggested that surface free radicals caused damage to cells (2). This explanation appears doubtful, however, since the addition of silica to water, such as that found in biological systems, quenches free radicals; also, such a hypothesis does not provide basis for a persistent inflammatory pattern that lasts for years. Kane et al. (3) proposed that silica's toxicity resulted from an excessive concentration of calcium ions within the phagocytic cell (macrophages). However, the mechanism that was capable of linking silica to an excess of intracellular, ionic calcium was not explained. The surface of silica is certainly involved because covering the surface with polymers or phospholipids decreases silica's toxicity (4-6).When silica is engulfed by macrophages platelet activating factor and leukotrienes are produced (7, 8). This is the same inflammatory pattern produced by phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore A23187 and ionic calcium. How could silica be acting like A23187? Perhaps calcium binds to silica extracellulary and then is released intracellulary following phagocytosis; the latter process, in a sense a ""piggy back"" process, would permit activation of inflammation and cell death mechanisms."

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho em desgaste de camadas espessas de óxidos formadas na superfície do aço inoxidável ferrítico 410D após a sua submissão a tratamentos isotérmicos em atmosfera oxidante. O aço em questão foi estudado no estado de entrega e tratado isotermicamente nas temperaturas de 900°C e 1000°C por diferentes intervalos de tempo. O método de avaliação empregado foi o teste de desgaste micro-abrasivo do tipo esfera presa em placa. Com o desenvolvimento do estudo, foi possível executar análises qualitativas e quantitativas a respeito do comportamento em desgaste do aço inoxidável 410D em função de sua condição superficial, como oxidada ou não. Alterações microestruturais também foram consideradas na discussão dos resultados. Concluiu-se que a camada superficial de óxidos desenvolvida após os tratamentos isotérmicos possui boa aderência e tem potencial para aplicação como camada protetora do aço em aplicações onde a sua resistência ao desgaste seja requerida.

O objetivo desse trabalho é planejar e controlar a chegada de veículos para carregamento nas plantas ArcelorMittal Tubarao e ArcelorMittal Vega, apresentando uma agenda com os horários disponíveis para o transportador escolher. Esse processo de escolha de um horário disponível é suportado por uma agenda gerada pela usina, considerando as restrições operacionais e de capacidade de expedição por ponto de carregamento. Programar a chegada de veículos aumenta a previsibilidade da necessidade de recursos adicionais para realizar o carregamento e assim não gerar filas, não perdendo produtividade no processo de transporte com veículos parados. A ausência da programação tem uma abrangência muito maior que apenas perda de produtividade e atrasos, ela também eleva o custo total de transporte da cadeia de suprimentos. Visando aumentar a competitividade e melhorar a previsibilidade do processo de expedição, foi implementada a solução para regular o fluxo de chegada dos veículos, sistematizando o processo de agendamento do veículo para carregamento.

"Investment in diamond exploration has been declining over the past decade, in spite of positive long-term industry fundamentals and a growing interest in diamonds as an investment category. The lack of new significant discoveries in recent years has eroded investor confidence, yet no new discoveries are possible without investment in exploration. Junior ‘mine finders’ have been the hardest hit. Their agility, tenacity, and appetite for risk are not sufficient to attract the funding required, even at the greenfield stage. Developing new discoveries into mineral resources can be crippling without solid financial support. Junior incubators could play a crucial role, especially at the project evaluation stage – but where are they? Alternatives to traditional funding mechanisms have become available, many still untested in the junior diamond exploration space. Valuable lessons can be drawn from the past and used to inform emerging new strategies. IntroductionDiamonds are the ultimate expression of love. Their ancient and timeless allure continues to influence consumer emotions and behaviours across continents, cultures and age groups. Analysts are predicting a sustained supplydemand shortfall in the years ahead which will trend diamond prices generally upwards. With positive long-term industry fundamentals, one cannot help but wonder why funding for diamond exploration and development projects is so scarce.Investment in exploration across commodities – including diamonds – has been declining for a number of years, reaching a historic eleven-year low early in 2017. The lack of major diamond discoveries in recent years has done little to strengthen the case for investing in diamond projects, yet no new discoveries can be made without investment in exploration.Global estimates of known carats in the ground stand currently at 2.5 billion carats, which equates to around 18 years of production at current levels of 140 million carats (mct) per annum. Sustainable replenishment of depleting diamond resources is possible only through the development of new discoveries. This is what junior explorers are best at – but they need investors to fund their evaluation activities from early in the project development continuum."

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use higher content TiO2 feedstocks with lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the worlds TiO2 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37 -54 % TiO2 An industry growth rate of 25 % in the next ten years combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower grades for rutile (95 % TiO2) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55 to 90% TiO2) mean that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite. A hypothetical ideal feedstock is presented and strategies to obtain it are suggested. Reasons for some of the mineral specifications are given.

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. Determining the origins of air overpressure has been a long-debated topic within the explosives engineering community. Historically, it has been accepted that the initial face movement gave rise to air displacement, resulting in an air overpressure pulse. Later research proposed that the air overpressure pulse resulted from the shockwave rapidly propagating through and impacting the quarry face. Most recently, researchers have derived that air overpressure is associated with the gas phase from which a gaseous product from explosives rapidly pours out the quarry face under high pressure. Significant research has strongly indicated that the time at which the air overpressure pulse exits the face fails to coincide with either the arrival of the shockwave at the free face or the initial face movement. Research has consistently shown that the shockwave arrival at the face occurs before the air overpressure pulse leaves the face. Therefore, to best determine which blast mechanism contributed to the initial air overpressure pulse, testing was aimed at verifying the precise time at which the air overpressure exited the faces compared to when the face first moved. This research describes tests using scaled concrete blocks, which provided the ability to control the key parameters necessary for the research to be successfully concluded. Black powder was selected as the energetic material to eliminate the production of the detonation wave while still inducing other gas-producing effects. The components evaluated were air blast arrival times in front of the face, the initial movement of the blast face, the precise initiation time of the blast hole, timing of pressurization within the rock mass (between borehole and face, or adjacent borehole), and the speed of sound in the air. A detailed timeline was created which portrays the actions within the blast to promote an understanding of the sequencing of events. The results showed that the initial face movement occurred at 17.57 milliseconds (ms) while the calculated time at which the air overpressure exited the face occurred at 7.07 ms. The large disparity continues to reaffirm the premise that the origin fails to coincide with the air pressure pulse. Average pressurization through the block occurred at a rate of 341.23 feet per second (104.15 meters per second) which resulted in the gas release pulse being calculated to exit the face between 4.41 and 6.21 ms. This pulse correlates more accurately with the air overpressure origin timing which will be the focus of continued research.
