"Abstract - In many mining areas, potentially profitable mineral projects can be at risk because local people do not trust their governments and mining companies on many issues, including human rights. Projects will continue to be vulnerable to potential failure, delays, and higher costs. This paper suggests that geoscientists need to be aware of the global challenges they face from issues of corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and human rights. These are not areas in which geoscience education has traditionally focused.This paper examines the types of conflict concerning human rights that are encountered by geoscientists involved in mineral exploration and development. It provides a background to human rights issues and presents a classification of the types of issue encountered. It reports on a survey of case studies that provide examples of the breadth, complexities, and consequences of such issues. The paper then concludes by outlining the development of codes and standards to improve performance, and suggests approaches for positive, practical engagement."

One of the main uses of fossil fuels is in the transportation sector, leading to environmental consequences such as climate change. In order to move towards a more sustainable energy infrastructure, a transition must begin from fossil fuels to renewable fuels, derived from e.g. biomass. One means of facilitating this transition is to develop reforming technology that can extract hydrogen from a suitable fuel that is either fossil fuel or renewable in origin. The hydrogen would be feed to a 'fuel cell' engine that would power the car, truck or bus. One reforming technology that is attractive for automotive applications is autothermal reforming (ATR). Autothermal reforming is the combination of steam reforming and partial oxidation, whereby a portion of the fuel is combusted using a sub-stoichiometric amount of air, and the resulting thermal energy drives the more desirable steam reforming reaction. ATR is attractive for fast start-up, rapid load following and ease of control. ATR also has the benefit of smaller volume and fewer peripheral requirements as compared to other reforming technologies. Recently, a bench-scale gasoline autothermal reformer (ATR) was constructed and tested. This ATR employs a novel design, consisting of three concentric annuli in order to promote heat transfer from the partial oxidation reaction to the steam reforming reaction. Concurrently, a CFD based model (FLUENT) of the ATR that considers the geometric complexity of the reformer was validated. In spite of the use of simplified kinetics, the model predicted well the observed trends in temperature and overall performance. This paper will discuss the use of the model to improve the design of the ATR. The impact of various system parameters upon performance will be investigated along with alterations in the geometry of the ATR. The various tradeoffs in performance and system volume/size will be highlighted in the context of a fuel cell power system.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

Altindag Foreword Some thirty years ago it was almost customary that articles in South African technical and scientific journals were followed up by discussions in which the reader(s) expressed criticism and/or added to the information contained in the article. This custom has obviously died out, be it that the articles are nowadays of such a high standard that nothing can be added or be it that the receivers of the Journal suffer from an information inflation and do not read the articles anymore. I now have the temerity to offer a discussion to an article that recently appeared in the journal, namely ?The evaluation of rock brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills? by R. Altindag (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metall., vol, 102(2002), pp. 61?66.

Most cyclic plasticity models used in multiaxial fatigue life predictions are based on a concept of a yield surface, which divides the elastic and plastic domains. Plastic straining occurs when the stress state reaches the surface and tries to move outward. Subsequent plastic straining causes the stress state to remain on the yield surface, which will translate to prevent the stress point from moving outside it according to a kinematic hardening rule that models the Bauschinger effect. The accurate modeling of the yield surface shape is fundamental to predict stress-strain relations. In this work, the main yield surface equations for isotropic materials are compared. Even though most materials can be modeled using Mises and Tresca surfaces, other need to consider the effect on the yield strength of the hydrostatic stress or the normal stress acting on a critical plane. It is shown that pressure-sensitive models originally devised for concrete can be applied to predict yielding in some materials, and even fatigue life for metallic structures with short cracks.

Results from work on the effect of inferstitials on recovery and recrystallization of' very pure iron (99.995 pet) doped with nilrogen up to 400 ppm are reported. Nitrided specimens were obtained by heating the iron in a static atmosphere of NH3 + H2. The samples were cold-rolled 80 pet, subjected to a series of isochronal and isothermal anneals, and submitted to examination by X-rays, micrographs, and hardness tests. Small additions of nitrogen show a strong effect in reducing recovery of' the mechanical properties of high-purity iron. At the temperatures of. the experiments, this effect proved greater than in the case of carbon. At 400°C pure iron recovers more than 50 pet of the total hardness increase, carburized iron vecovers 25 pet, and nitrided iron only 10 pet. On the other hand. the addition of nitrogen has, similarly to carbon, a very small effect on recrystallization; the effect is, however, slightly higher than that of carbon. When the concentration Of nitrogen is above the solubility limit in a iron at the temperattue of the experiments, an increase in the frequency of nu -cleation is also observed. THE object of the present work is to improve knowledge on the effect of interstitials both on recovery and on primary recrystallization of pure iron. In fact. at present there are no available data on the effect of nitrogen on high-purity iron. The only work which at present can be somewhat related to this problem is a work of Leak et al.1 in which grain boundary internal friction at high temperature in the presence of increasing amounts of nitrogen is studied by a torsion pendulum. The present work is a continuation of a previous one2 on the effects of carbon. EXPERIMENTAL PART Preparation of the Material. Pure iron was prepared following the same methods used in the pre- vious work2 and was nitrided using controlled quantities of ammonia in an apparatus similar to that used for carburizing. The apparatus consists essentially of a gas-tight quartz tube containing the specimens. The tube, maintained at constant pressure by means of a mercury seal, is placed in a resistance furnace. For nitriding, the NH3 + H2 atmosphere with a suitable concentration of NH3 was introduced into the tube, which had been previously carefully evacuated and degassed by heating at 600°C. The hydrogen used was carefully purified by passing it through a palladium filter. The ammonia required was prepared with the following reaction: CaO + 2NH4CI —CaCl2 + H2O + 2NH3 by heating the mixture of CaO and NH4C1 in a glass flask and then collecting the ammonia in a graduated Hempel burette. For each nitriding program a given amount of NH3 prepared by this method was introduced together with the H2 into the tube previously evacuated. Nitriding of the sample was then performed at 570°C for 48 hr. After this, to ensure a homogeneous distribution of nitrogen, the samples were further heated for 72 hr at 800°C. With this method which uses a static nitriding atmosphere, carefully controlled conditions of purity are obtained. Contrarily, with the conventional continuous-flow methods, using large quantities of circulating gas, there is a greater risk of introducing impurities into the samples. Furthermore, the required nitrogen concentration in the specimen is easily predetermined and obtained. A plot of the relation observed between the initial concentration of NH3 in the gas and the quantity of nitrogen introduced into the iron samples is given in Fig. 1. The data refer to samples of 1.2-mm thickness and to the nitriding conditions previously described. Furthermore, as a comparison, the data relative to two 0.5-mm-thick samples are reported. The presence of a reservoir in the cold zone of the reaction bulb made possible the gradual dissociation of ammonia on the sample in the hot zone. Internal-friction methods were used to determine the content of nitrogen dissolved in the iron samples. Some analyses were also carried out with chemical methods. In the last decade public awareness of the need for pollution abatement has increased greatly. The concern that had been previously shared by local and state conservation groups has spread to create a national concern for preservation of our non-polluted environmental assets and regeneration of those that have been wasted. Because other current matters such as inflation, civil rights,' tax reform and the Vietnam situation have been the object of most national concern, an extremely strong national pressure base has not been brought to bear on the pollution control crisis. Yes, the word is crisis, for in many areas pollution is of critical concern. One has only to look at Lake Erie, the skies about our major urban areas and many of our major rivers and streams to see this crisis These are not situations that can be corrected overnight. We are faced with two basic problems that should be attacked simultaneously: (1) Cleaning up the present sources of pollution and (2) preventing the generation of new pollution sources. What approach should be taken? As in any engineering problem, the limits must be well defined before a final solution is attempted. Pollution must be defined on a national basis. This means that basic Federal legislation and control is necessary. This should reduce any competitive advantage that can presently be gained by movement of operations from one state or geographical area to another on the basis of differences in local legislation .and enforcement. By giving real numbers as guidelines, selective enforcement can be avoided. As a starting point, for a definition of pollution let us use the following - "Any change in the environment occurring from other than natural causes." This definition may not be satisfactory to all but surely we must be somewhat dramatic in our statements to counteract the present prevailing philosophy. Our statement of this philosophy - "At what level of pollution can we afford to operate?" On the basis of our general definition we would like to state what we feel should be the philosophical statement - "How little can we change our physical environment as a result of operations?"

Neste trabalho avaliou-se o efeito de diferentes ciclos térmicos na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de um aço Dual Phase revestido por imersão a quente, da classe de resistência de 800 MPa, a partir de simulações em escala piloto no equipamento HDPS (Hot Dip Process Simulator), ensaios dilatométricos, tração à temperatura ambiente e flangeamento. Nas simulações de recozimento contínuo foram experimentadas duas temperaturas de encharque no recozimento intercrítico (740°C e 780°C) e três temperaturas de patamar isotérmico no resfriamento rápido (610°C, 560°C e 510°C). A caracterização microestrutural evidenciou que a temperatura de encharque de 740°C não foi suficiente para dissolução completa dos carbonetos formados na laminação a quente, resultando em frações reduzidas de segundo constituinte. Com isso, o limite de resistência mínimo de 800 MPa não foi alcançado. Além disso, os resultados de ductilidade e flangeamento se mostraram aquém dos obtidos nas simulações com encharque a 780°C. Nas simulações com temperatura de encharque a 780°C e isotérmicas de 510°C e 560°C no resfriamento rápido foi atendido o limite de resistência mínimo, com capacidade de expansão de furo ligeiramente superior à obtida nas simulações com encharque a 740°C.

EMR is equivalent to reporting Mineral Resource additional to Mineral Reserve, which has been permitted in jurisdictions outside the US for many years. Scouring of soil is the major concern forthe various hydraulic structures built in the flowing rivers since scouring impacts the bearing capacity of foundations. Hence, consideration of scouring in the design of foundations for hydraulic structures is crucial. Pile groups in bridges are subjected to combined vertical and horizontal loading due to self-weight, live loads, vehicular impacts, wind load, earth pressure, and current. Hence, an assessment of the combined bearing capacity of pile groups subjected to scour is essential for the safety of the structure. This paper aims to analyze the bearing capacity of pile group supporting the bridge under combined loading i.e., Vertical (V) and Horizontal (H) loading subjected to local scour. Three-dimensional finite element model (3D-FEM) of a 3 x 3 pile group embedded in homogeneous sandy soil is established in Abaqus (2018). Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model is used for the soil domain. The pile group is modelled as linear elastic. Finally, V-H yield envelopes are obtained with and without scour. The potential impact of different parameters, such as angle of attack, flow velocity, depth of flow, and different pile length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) and spacing-to-diameter ratios (S/D) of pile group on V-H yield envelopes is studied.

This paper describes a method of reversal control of the open-hearth furnace that obtains in practice those effects considered below as essential to a completely automatic control, without appreciable interference with the natural rise and fall in temperature of the regenerative portions of the furnace system. Growing out of some studies of radiation pyrometry in open-hearth regenerators, it was developed during 1934-1938, and has been successfully applied to a number of commercial furnaces. The goal of open-hearth furnace operation is the highest rate of production of steel of proper quality consistent with good refractory life and fuel economy. This requires rapid heat transfer from furnace to charge, which in turn is dependent upon heating the furnace refractories to the highest safe operating temperature. The greater the heat input to the melting chamber, the sooner this limiting temperature will be reached, so that control methods in general that are designed to protect against overheating of refractories should help to maintain maximum fuel input and production rate. For the typical open-hearth system, with fixed regenerator capacity and with rate of fuel input usually restricted in its range of variation, our basic assumption is the idea that the only other important variable —that is, the time interval between successive reversals—should also be held constant or within a small range. The present reversal control was designed therefore so that, under normal operating conditions, no arbitrary limitation is imposed other than to keep the reversal interval within the optimum time range. However, since a near approach to completely automatic operation involves protection of refractories through the balancing of furnace end temperatures as well as emergency protection against temperature peaks above some upper limit, it was also felt essential to employ, as an integral part of the control unit, a temperature-measuring instrument to register the true temperature of the refractory surfaces at some critical region in the hot ends of the regenerative zones. As the basic elements of the control, we thus have one "maximum" and one lLminimum" time relay and a potentiometer recorder-controller, combined with switches and relays to operate as follows: I. Reversal normally occurs within an optimum range limited by the maximum and minimum settings to about 4 to 6 min. variation, but the actual interval usually is less variable and closer to the minimum setting. 2. The margin between minimum and maximum time is utilized, together with a "floating temperature limit" in the potenti-ometric control instrument, to correct any tendency toward temperature unbalance between ends of the furnace. 3. Laboratory studies have been carried out on acid leaching as a possible route for the extraction of potassium from glauconitic sandstone. Leaching efficiencies with sulphuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids were investigated. The effects on potassium dissolution of temperature, concentration and type of acid, stirring speed and leaching time were also studied. The results show that it is possible to recover 87.5, 93 and 85% potassium with 5 M H2SO4, HCl and HNO3, respectively. During the initial stages of the sulphuric acid leaching process the chemical reaction at the mineral surface is the rate determining step, whereas during the later stages diffusion through the product layer is rate-controlling. Overall, the process follows a mixed-control model that includes both chemical reaction and diffusion. The activation energy for the dissolution of K was found to be in the range 25.79-106 kJ/mol.

Drillability or a measure of drilling performance has been based on ( 1 ) hardness and toughness of rocks , ( 2 ) power input to the drill compared with total volume of hole , and ( 3 ) penetration related to resistive forces of rock on the applied penetrative forces . An analysis of some representative previous work is made . Experimental drillability curves from AX- size diamond core bit performance in eight different rocks ranging from dense hard taconite to soft limestones are presented . Results show that in small bore diamond drilling , compressive strength and possibly other rock properties may be a useful parameter in predicting drilling rates .

OF the various minerals that occur in fibrous form known as asbestos, chrysotile is the variety most in demand for commercial uses, and, last year, over 683,000 tons of the various grades were produced in Canada and United States, exclusive of African and Russian production, which figures are uncertain. Production has not been able to keep up with the increased demand, and an acute shortage exists. Canada, Russia, and Africa are still the most important producers. However, Russia consumes most of its production at home and exports very little. The United States consumes over 60 pct of the total production and produces only about 4 pct of the total from deposits in Vermont and small quantities from Arizona. This paper will review mainly, some of the more recent developments concerned with the extraction and processing of this fibrous mineral for various industrial uses, such as textiles, insulation, building materials and brake linings.

The modem 'copper smelter today utilizes tonnage oxygen for smelting concentrates. ,generating a high strength S02 off-gas leaving the smelter vessel. This gas stream. which also contains any unreacted oxygen, plus CO2; N2 and H20. also carries with it the volatilized portion of heavy metals in the feed, plus partly oxidized sulfide concentrates, The time/temperature history and subsequent treatment of this off-gas stream emerging from the smelting furnace exit up to the acid plant can influence the partitioning and segregation of heavy metals, in the off-gas circuit. Depending on this history. the type and characteristics of the chemical and physical reactions which occur in the gas handling system 'can be influenced. This fact can also be used as a tool to adjust the separation of copper from heavy metals. In this paper, the impact of different time/temperature histories of the gas, due to different furnace geometries and design. on the subsequent formation and characteristics of the smelter dust is examined. Based on the available data. several case histories drawn from examples using both bath and flash smelting technologies are analyzed from this perspective.

Chronic whole-body vibration exposure, as expected in large construction and mining vehicles, has been associated with neck and back pain and injury.1 While work has been done towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship between vibration and shock and muscle activity of the back musculature2, relatively little information regarding the activity of neck, shoulder and upper arm muscles is known. Today’s equipment designs must conform to domestic and international standards, however these standards do not specifically address the vibration exposure in the head and upper quarter. Further it is not well known how the control configuration within a vehicle (e.g. steering wheel versus arm controls) influences muscle voluntary and reflex activity levels. Greater muscle activity may lead to greater muscle fatigue – which in turn may be associated with greater risk of injury.2 Thus, muscle contractions needed to maintain static postures as well as those resulting reflexively should be considered during an analysis of seating position. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck muscle function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative muscle activities of 5 neck, shoulder, and upper arm muscles during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree of freedom (dof) vibration system. Each ride was repeated using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted arm-rest controls (FM), seat mounted arm-rest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). Five channels of surface electromyography (EMG) of the right-side cervical erector spinae muscles (neck extensors), sternocleidomastoid (neck flexor), upper trapezius (shoulder elevator), biceps brachii (elbow flexor) and triceps brachii (elbow extensor) muscles were collected throughout each ride (~ 2min) using pre-amplified (10x), 1 cm silver bar electrodes, with 1 cm fixed inter-electrode distances (Delsys, Inc). Further analog amplification was set at 10k (1k for one subject), and sampled at 1000Hz using a 12-bit DAQ card and Labview 7.1 software (National Instruments). A total of 7 right-handed male subjects were tested, but only 5 had complete EMG data sets to analyze for this sub-study. EMG was analyzed using root mean square (RMS, in mV) of 20 ms moving windows, and then averaged across the entire trial for a measure of mean total muscle activity (voluntary and reflexive). The muscle activity to maintain the static posture was estimated as the mean RMS EMG over a 1 sec interval just prior to and/or after completion of the ride. Colorado nahcolite deposits, estimated at 29 Gt, formed in an asymmetric permanent-lake basin whose waters were rich in algae and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Nahcolite (NaHCO3) occurs in oil shale of the Green River Formation (Eocene) as aggregates (62%), disseminated crystals (24%), and impure beds (13%). Because much of the nahcolite is nonbedded, it will be mined with oil shale and can be concentrated to marketable grade by crushing and screening. Impurities in nahcolite are kerogen, quartz, pyrite, and carbonate minerals. A promising new market for nahcolite is in the process of removal of sulfur dioxide from industrial stack gases. When heated, nahcolite reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium sulfate. Differences in thermally induced microporosity may explain why nahcolite is more reactive than trona, a Possible competitor with nahcolite for SO2 removal. Limited production of nahcolite at one or possibly two localities is expected in the next several years, but large-scale production is probably at least 10 years away.

A new kind of stepwise reinforced technology, which consists of immediate shotcreting, timely bolting and delay grouting, was optimized after thorough analysis and illustrated with a successful engineering example in extremely difficult softrock roadway.

Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.
